Hello VirtualMichal, the specs are very similar, and the price is the same. They even both have dual cooling as well. I personally would go for the MSI because of the looks and the (bigger and upgradable) graphics card. And the ram and the ssd storage of the MSI can both be upgraded later if you really need it - furthermore, I personally have never seen anyone use more then 4 usb ports at the same time. So the Asus rog wins on this one, because it already has more ram and storage instead of unused usb ports.

My personaly prefrence would be the MSi, because it's upgradable to a larger extend for later and the steelseries keyboard. But they are incredibly similar. So pick them for looks I guess.

Hey everyone I am asking this for someone elsewhere but it got my curiosity going so I figured I would ask here as well.

    Here is the quote:

"Hello, I just bought a GT72 and I love everything about it except one thing....when I use software to speak into the computer, such as google voice or the windows sound recorder, my mic doesn't pic up sounds on the default settings. You would think the default settings would work. However, upon fiddling with the settings, and putting a 30 dB boot and setting the volume to 100%, it picks up my voice, but there is a background noise or hiss I guess you could call it. For a computer of this price, there really is no reason the mic doesn't work with lower settings. Can anyone try out their integrated mic who has bought a GT72 already and let me know if your mic picks up your voice fine. While I will use a headset usually, I still like to make phone calls with google voice, via my gmail account every now and then, and like to do this without using a headset. I had returned an ASUS G751 about a week ago due to the screen having problems and the speakers not being that good, and also a key that got stuck sometimes. But the mic was fine on that, and also the mic on my wife's macbook works fine with default settings. The GT72 laptop is much better in my opinion, except the built in mic. Also, if anyone has adjusted any of your volume or boost settings, or found a driver that works well with the mic, please let me know. It's the only thing with this laptop that I see so far from it being a full 5 stars."

So has anyone had this issue? I'm gonna test it out myself when I can. (Very busy) But as I use a headset it doesn't really bother/ pertain to me.

    Thanks!

Woefully, my experience with MSI mics in the GT & GS series has not been good, and I have the same issues. This is definitely something MSI can improve, and it's seems to be an overlooked feature. My guess is the topic has never been a priority, because the primary focus has been gaming performance, and more significant features. I think this is something that should be passed on to our MSI forum rep, Geno.

    What do you think Geno?

    :)

Waiting for GT72 stocks to replenish on Amazon.co.uk or ScanStation UK. Seems like these are the only UK vendors.

I believe Scan still have some GT72 2QD in stock. 2QE (Dominator Pro) are not available anywhere in UK.

Only sites I know that sell 980M GT72s are Amazon.co.uk and ScanStation.co.uk. I can find plenty of 970M GT72s though.

I have noted this problem with several GT & GS series notebooks. Even with the mic boost at max, my GT72 sound pick-up is poor and distorted.

My friend got this laptop and I'm checking it out now. We've been running some benchmarks like Heaven and Valley and 3DMark etc etc. Has anyone been able to get their CPU over 69C? The highest temp so far has been the GPU at exactly 70C. Room temp is around 23C and the laptop fans are blocked by the wall we have it against lol.

Same goes for my GT60 and GS60. During CS:GO gameplay, my teammates are often complaining that my mic volume is too soft or that it sounds like I live in a box o_O. Steam mic receiver and software are all set to max too.

Well, it really isn't a big deal to me, because I always use a headset anyhow, but I can understand folks wanting the built-in mic performing, at least, reasonably well. Overall though, the GT72 is a great notebook, and an awesome performer. Built-in mic aside, I'm happy!

I posted this in the MSI rep forum, but figured I could ask on here as well:

I was wondering if the keys on the GT72 (see sig) or link: ( Amazon.com : MSI Computer GT72 DOMINATOR GT72 DOMINATOR PRO-211 17.3-Inch Laptop : Computers & Accessories) are removable as it seems my spacebar is sticking a little. I didn't spill anything on it or anything, it just seems to be sticking. I blasted it with compressed air and it seems to be ok for a short period, but comes back. I'm wondering if something did work it's way in though somehow and just wanted to see if it was removable for cleaning? Of course do it very carefully if so! But I'd really hate to have to send it into MSI for something like this if it is something I could do myself.

Anything is removable with enough force, the trick is getting to reinstall back into place. It's pretty easy to break the switches even when being careful. Typically less headache to get a replacement keyboard RMA'd out to you through your reseller.

Will my Reseller was Amazon, and they told me to contact the Manufacturer for anything, (Warranty sticker was torn to put new 512GB SSD in.) Which I did because I knew what I was doing and know MSI just kind of puts that sticker on there to prevent less computer savy people from being curious. This seemingly sticky space bar has just cropped up. No other issues but this! CPU, GPU, Ram, HDD's, screen, and sound all are good! Nothing bad, wireless is even good with no drops other than when I reboot my router (which is kind of a duh moment!)

Maybe I should of asked, can you put the keys back on once they have been taken off?

If not, how is MSI's warranty for shipping? I had a Samsung that I had to send in 3x during warranty and had to pay shipping each time. Took a $2000 laptop and turned it into a $2500 laptop after shipping and insurance costs. Will MSI give me free shipping? I don't have any money for shipping it if that's the case and am now stuck with a bad keyboard.

It's best to actually try contacting them and see what they have to say. If bought through Amazon that's kind of the risk you take, not having the reseller support to help. MSI doesn't typically cover shipping for something like this but depends on the exact issue that's occurring. They'll be able to tell you details once you talk with them.

Curious why in a forum filled with resellers helping users that you decided to buy a laptop off Amazon. Did they have a cheaper price or better shipping?

Free 2 day shipping and actually already had about $500 in gift card money that helped make it possible to get this particular model in the first place. Patience isn't one of my strong suites and when I was able to get it off Amazon far sooner. (most resellers had at least a weeks wait for the same model if I PAID rush delivery. It was a combo of getting it quicker, and cheaper (thanks to the gift cards I had already) I would have had to go with a 970M if it wasn't for the gift cards and probably would have gone with a reseller if that was the case.

On a different note, the space bar isn't sticking right now through all this typing. *scratches head*

I just purchased this laptop in France (GT72 2QE-259FR) and I was wondering about the MSI bag : can I obtain it freely by sending my invoice to MSI ? If yes, what is the email or phone/fax to send this request ?
    Thanks.

I thought of getting on the dragon army forum and suggesting a BIOS update to allow GPU switching before booting in the OS. However they seem to have forum maintenance until tomorrow... More of you guys should ask for this so that they notice people want it!

    Hi Everyone

    So I got a GT72 970m about 3 weeks ago and am starting to wish I didn't :(

I did look at forums before I got it and people were saying that installing win 7 on it would work fine.

It doesn't... the VGA drivers have a known problem of not starting at windows start 7 out of 10 time. I have confirmed this with MSI.

This is the email from them.
    ------------
    Dear Cutomer,

We know this bug.It is caused by nvdia vga driver. Now win7 driver is in test stage. And we don't have win7 driver neither.I have asked our concerned departent when win7 driver is ready. And I haven't gotten the reply so far.
    ------------

Also I am having problems with my mouse stopping working for 3 out of every 10 seconds when i do finally get windows started.

I am supper unhappy with this purchase and wish I had gotten anything else.. anything that worked with win 7.

If I can't find USB/USB3.0 drivers that fix my mouse problem. I will start crying as I will need to buy and install windows 8. Spending more money because the win 8.1 version that came with the laptop is a cut down piece of crap.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Andrew

    1. What were you trying to do to your system?
    2. What happened when you tried to install Win8 drivers for your Win7 OS? And what issues did you have?
    3. Have you updated the BIOS & EC firmwares?
    4. If you want to access extra features offered by Win8 Pro, then you can perform Anytime Upgrade to activate it.

    Windows 8.1 is amazing o_O.

Dunno why you would have to spend money to buy Windows 8, wouldn't it originally have come with Windows 8?

Totally confused why anyone would choose 7 over 8.1 at this point...

Because like Vista, Windows 8 is being much hated on, 8.1 doesn't feel like Win 7 therefore is rubbish. Windows 10 on the other hand will be amazing because it's after Win 8, regardless of it's actually performance. [Sarcasm]

I move to Win 8 from day 1, little bit of tweak and it's easier to use than Windows 7. Had Vista and never had problem with it OS-wise. They are too much changes and people just unable to adapt.

Same. I actually liked the way Windows 8 implemented the start menu with the whole screen experience UI. Kinda disappointed they dumbed it down for people in 8.1 with the "start button" on the bottom left again. I prefer my desktop to be completely clear so that you can fully see the wallpaper without any interference. Then with the click of an invisible button on the bottom left, all your programs suddenly appears :)

So 4x 128 GB m2 data ssds are way too small. Would I lose too much performance putting a sata 2TH samsung hdd in the raid arday and put it in the blank slot that fits a 2.5" drive??... Or should I go an 840 1tb ssd to keep performance up ?. Do I just swap one out and use the adapter like dilligaf did?

Will the raid automatically rebuild it or will I need to clone it???

Or to not stuff around..... Buy one of these from the state's which is currently free shipping for us aussies ?

I have a quick question, and would love it if someone could answer.

I ordered my MSI GT72 980M and it should arrive in 2 weeks or so.

My question is: Can the quick launch keys be fully customized? I ask mostly because I don't use xsplit, but OBS, and would love for that key to be set up to start streaming in OBS. But a more general answer to all the quick launch keys would be appreciated as well. How much customization can be done?

    Best regards,
    Mat.

I acquired Windows 8.1 for my Alienware when BF4 launched. It ran the game better and I enjoyed 8.1 a lot. There's no real drawback to 8.1 aside from minor confusion at the start screen.

That one button (xsplit) can be customized to run whichever program you want. I have mine set to launch CCleaner right now. The other buttons I'm afraid you can't customize as they're linked to hardware.

    hi everyone

I'm currently travelling in NY and looking to buy a gt72 since it's much more expensive in my country.

There is this one thing that makes me curious. I'm customizing gt72 pro 211 and gt72 pro 210 at xoticpc.com with same upgrades and it still makes almost 230$ difference.

    Here are the upgrades:

Both have 2 ssd with 128gb of crucial m550
Both have 16gb dd3 1866mhz kingston hyperx rams.
    Both have 2tb samsung spinpoint

It looks like every other part is exactly the same, so what's the cause of this 230$ difference? Am I missing something? I need to be extremely careful since i have only one shot and limited time in US so I won't have time to change it back.

Plus, is there a possible way for me to get rid of taxes? I have no information about these tax policies so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Would recommend keeping at least some kind of SSD for performance mate.

Also, just ordered my GT72. 980M 8GB, 32GB of RAM, 128GB SSD, 1TB HDD. Great for me as I wanted the max RAM eventually, then I also want to swap the base storage drives for x4 M2 512GB and a 2TB HDD.

    Arrives saturday.

    hi meaker,

I am either going to swap out one of the m.2 sata ports with a m.2 to SATA card so i can use that empty 2.5" bay to fit a 1TB SSD in it

or slowly replace the 128GB m.2 drives with 512GB drives over time...

i think just getting a SSD will be easier and cheaper than the m.2 factor?? (considering they aren't upto 1 gb yet)

im going to keep the 2.5" drive already in it alone at 1 TB. will be drive for downloads and backups... might upgrade it to a 2tb spinpoint from samsung

    Same as dilligaf

    sidenote:
can anyone tell me if that HDD in the 2.5" bay already has a bracket or does it just sit in there?

It sits in there. With a converter it should work, you could convert to msata instead of course.

How'd the cooling on these compared to the Asus g751? I bought a g751jy but rma'd it due to a speaker issue and I really wasn't all that impressed with the temps, 82 cpu degrees playing WoW solo, worried me about what it would be when 25 man raiding! I have a choice get another g751 or pay the difference and get the gt72. Up in Canada the msi gt72 costs 500$ more then the Asus g751

    Yep!

Got a M.2 to Sata convertor... sounds like the cheapest way to add more room to my raid array; the 840 EVO would be nice as it has firmware fix :) got all the other cables like dilligaf... just waiting for my convertor from spintech.. should be here on monday... aus post don't deliver over teh weekend... pfft!!!
