I've checked the use-nvdia-card for all apps, turned off all windows enhancements, tried aero/non-aero themes, and the performance hit was still very high when running in windowed mode. I guess I can live with making myself playing in Fullscreen. WHat is more irritating is the HDMI sound output not detected after booting up. I have to boot-up (video output to HDMI is on, sound option is off) then restart to detect the HDMI sound. As seen in this screenshot: [IMG]

The GT70 version I have has the 2x128ssd and 1tb 5400 rpm. My WEI score for HDD is 8.3. I just wanted to use the USB drive 3TB for my media libraries.

I did hook up my 24" Dell to the VGA output... and of course I am seeing horizontal lines (emi/grounding stuff I assume) when the AC power is connected. More laptop issues I guess. At least the sound doesn't seem affected.

Trying to clean up the random programs installed: Are SCM, Killer Network Manager, MSI LED Manager, Sound Blaster Cinema useful enough / required to keep?

    Hello folks
    First post here
After 2,5 years with the asus g73jh, i decided to change and now i'm a proud owner of a gt70 2od-064. This laptop is amazing. Thank you so much all of you for the hard working in here. It helped me a lot to decide what laptop should i buy.
I've read all this thread and i gotta a quick question. How are you guys clean installing the win 8 ? 'cause win 8 don't have that sticker anymore with the product key and my laptop didn't come with any win 8 dvd ... i'm trying to swap the the old hdd for a brand new samsung 840 pro but i'm stuck right now.

    Thanks in advance.

So - my GT70-20D is arriving tomorrow (went with the 2xSSD version in the end, as the 3xSSD version is imposssible to find here in NL. Nowhere has it in stock, nor can they tell me when they expect to get it).

Quick question - can I install the latest Nvidia GPU drivers normally,- with drivers direct from Nvidia, or is a vbios flash or .inf modification required first?

Should be a nice upgrade from my GT780DXR :)

Congrats on the new machine! For a clean install of 8, you'll need to get a copy of the install media (USB, .iso, or disc). As for your Key code, it's stored in the UEFI Bios now and is automatically read by the Windows installer... the restore image from MSI will restore to factory default, and is what I went with for simplicity sake when I upgraded SSD. I made backup restore DVD's and it restored to factory state on new SSD drive, cleaned it up a bit and updated, and have been good to go.

Enjoy your new machine and good luck!

Have you tried different drivers instead of trying the same driver over and over which may be buggy?
Have you used the clean install option when installing new drivers, or tried to remove the drivers yourself? Either use clean install option inside installer or run driver sweeper.
Is it the same game you have trouble with? Could be game related.

Worst case scenario is to format the whole drive and start over again.

Actually i was after the win 8 media dvd. I tried the windows 8 setup that everybody tells in other foruns to download an iso for me but when i insert my key that came with the laptop it shows "this key can´t be used to a comercial version of windows 8" (something like that, i'm not at home right now). I know that my key is OEM but it was supposed to work according to the other guys.
I really like the ideia of having a win 8 dvd so that i can start fresh whenever i want. With the other windows this was so easy, now its giving some trouble.
Did you feel any noticeable difference using the msi factory recovery disks from a clean installation ?

    cheers

Figured out I could get my hdmi sound option to show up by unplugging and plugging in the HDMI - not ideal as it will wear over time, but better than resetting I guess. I also had an issue with BSOD when coming back from sleep mode ( nvhda64v.sys the culprit from minidump ) and 'solved' that by never going to sleep. when plugged in. I know, great solution!

Now my only issue I have no clue how to fix is: the USB harddrive (3TB seagate) just randomly dropping and re-detecting. I have it set to open&view files so an explorer window just keeps popping up with the windows usb unplugged - plugged sounds. Anyone help / know a solution? So many usb options under the device manager.

    Hi at all :)

Im from Austria and I work part time for an IT-Store. I ordered my GT70 via our store about a week ago and i just cant wait to get this beast :D
im checking the transfer status from our distributor like every 10 minutes ^^
I ordered some Plextor M5Ms for testing too, the Corsair Vengeance RAM (16 GB for now) and my Samsung 840 Pro (512GB) are already waiting for the GT70 :D

BTW: Epic community here and epic Thread :)

best regards from the Alps ;D

I read about that issue, and while my problem may be related, it isn't that the USB drive disconnects after the laptop returns from sleep, its that the USB drive connects and immeidately reconnects while the laptop is ACTIVE and in-use. The drive has it's own power cord so I don't think it's a power issue, and the drive works correctly on my haswell lenovo win8 laptop. So I figured it was a GT70 thing, who knows?

I have to say, after having my beast a few weeks, this thing is the quietest laptop ever when not gaming. I literally hear nothing! Gaming has been fine - I set the fan using dave's program to fast and temps never got above 75 C. Really happy with this laptop! I just ordered a few AC access points for work, so I'm excited to test the speeds on that too.

Hmm in windows 7 Im able to just pop in the hdmi and the audio device appears and uses hdmi by default. Im at a hotel with this beast and unplug hdmi and replug all the time. No issues with audio. I was actually impressed how smooth it was.

Let us know how the Corsair Vengeance Ram works out and what voltage it is... I've got 2 8GB 1.5V 1866mhz sticks I played around with a bit and could not getting working properly in my GT60. I've read other posts that state 1.35V is required. They worked fine in my previous laptop but for some reason the new GT60/70's don't seem to like them.

    Enjoy the new laptop!

So my GT70 20D arrived today :) Got the version with the 2xSSDs. Basic configuration and software installs done, so far so good. Played 15mins of Metro Last Light as a first test. Running very nicely. After those 15mins the GPU temp hit 85c, and the CPU temp stayed under 70c. Cooler Boost was not on. That seems fine to me.

Just run 3DMark 2011 and got a score of 7346 (totally stock). That also seems fine to me.

Still on the GPU drivers that came preinstalled. The most recent WHQL ones from Nvidia won't install as they say they cannot find compatible hardware.

For ease of use I've set Nvidia control panel to favour the 780M, as I will always have this laptop plugged into the mains.

Anything else I should know / configure / change etc?

Have noticed one slightly strange thing though. When I press one of the buttons on the touch panel either side of the power button, the lights for all the buttons turn on, not just the one i pressed (although only the one I pressed is activated). This means for example that when I turn on coolerboost, all the lights stay lit. It does not cause a problem, but I guess its not what should happen?

If you got your GT70 without having resellers repaste the unit for you, it is HIGHLY recommended that you do so yourself on both CPU and GPU. Ive seen some fishy paste jobs done by MSI plus you get a good paste that ensure the lowest temperatures possible for your unit. :)

Noctua NTH-1 is pretty good if you dont know what to use :)

The mobile Haswell platform supports only that kind of memory unfortunately, 1.35v DDR3L. It's because of Intel's reduced power consumption program. Previous GT60 were based on the Ivy Bridge/Sandy Bridge CPU platform and so went with 1.5v DDR3
Even the motherboard revision has been changed to 16F4 (Haswell), just like MSI did with previous models 16F2 (Sandy Bridge) and 16F3 (Ivy Bridge).
Also, no point in going above 1866MHz RAM. That's the sweet spot right now. That higher frequency effect gets compensated mostly by higher T clocks, at best you gain 2-3% more performance (more during writing that reading).

    :)

Thanks. Unfortunately no resellers here in NL offer the repaste option, so I got mine stock. Its not something I feel comfortable doing myself, and so far at least the temps seem fine. If needed in games like Crysis I have no problem running with cooler-boost on, as I game with headphones anyway.

Another question though. I left the machine on with the lid closed last night to download from Origin whilst I was in bed. Obviously I adjusted the power settings so closing the lid did nothing, and the system did not go to sleep after a period of time. When I came down this morning and checked on it, Origin was display a pop-up saying that an unknown error had occured - and my downloads were only at about 10%. Either Origin fell over, or my net connection fell over, or something happened with the wireless adapter in the laptop. Are there any particular known issues with the wireless adapter, or should I just chalk this one up to something other than the laptop itself? I've still got lots more game downloading to do in the coming days, so plenty of chance to see if it happens again.

Overall the laptop seems to be running great, apart from the fact that all the touch button lights come on at once when I press one of them (although only the one I press is actually activated). Its purely cosmetic though and I can live with that. Tested Dishonored and Borderlands 2 last night. Both games in 1920x1080 max details ran at a solid 60fps, no dips at all :)

So after benchmarking and overclocking to stable levels, I finally let my rig loose tonight with Bioshock: Infinite. The benchmarked averaged an overall frame rate of 66-ish. The game runs beautifully on this machine with one exception:

Terrible god-awful screen tearing! I've enabled v-sync in game. Enabled v-sync in Nvidia Control Panel and triple buffering. It's helped a bit, but still getting minor tearing. Anyone else have this game and seen this problem? Fixes?

Set vsync and triple buffering to application specific in the Nvidia control panel, don't force them on there. If you force them there and turn on in the game itself you can get strange issues. In recent years I've not really encoutered many games where I needed to force these settings from the control panel. In almost all cases the settings in game did the job by themselves. In the case of BS:I it runs just fine for me with vysnc set in game. No tearing.

When you say set them to application specific, is that basically enabling them in "Manage 3D Settings"? It's the only area I can find settings in. Is it the settings in the "Program Settings" tab for that particular program in Nvidia Control Panel?

I ordered the 2OD-064US version without the SSD, I had originally gone with the 770m version but it was backordered so I had to make a decision quickly about a replacement and couldn't make the stretch to include the SSD.

Anyways, I'm pretty handy when it comes to DIY stuff and I'm wondering if I'll be able to add a SSD myself in the future?

Thanks for the input, rig should be here today and I can't wait!

Under the global settings put the option to application specific (this is from memory as I'm at work currently). Don't force the options on from there. If you have also modified the progam specific settings then make sure you change them back also.

For me (I received my GT70 yesterday) I basically did not change anything from the default in the Ndivia control panel, booted the game and set Vsync from there and all good.

HI everybody, i just pulled the trigger and got myself a gt70 2od-001us, i am very satisfied with my choice it replaced my asus g73sw, i was waiting for asus to release the g750 with the gtx 780m, but never happened, this thread helped a lot taking the decision, thanks guys, you are very knowledgeable. i wasn't sure to get the dragon edition or the one i got, performance wise i would not use the 32 gb of ram, however i was eager to test the super raid 0, since the impact it makes on real life performance is not significant i went with the single ssd option, however i do want to test it in the future, that saved me a few bucks, i'm planning on updating the ssd in the future and add a secondary one to test the raid 0. i was looking for the samsung pm841 with no succes, besides this one, which one would you recommend? Thanks in advance.

Done a bit more testing and gaming, and I have to say I'm quite impressed with the temps and the cooler.

I'm on the stock thermal paste - and after running Crysis 3 for 25mins, my GPU was maxing at 89c. High but within limits, and to be expected with this game. Where it got interesting was with cooler boost on. OK its noisy, but I game with headphones anyway so I don't hear it. Cooler boost dropped my max load GPU temp from 89c down to 74c. That is a much bigger change than I was expecting, and rather impressive if you ask me.

Make sure you have the GTX780M mobile driver and not the desktop version.

    Drivers | GeForce

Windows 8 contains USB 3.0 drivers but Windows 7 does not.

You can try reinstalling the Intel Chipset Software. There new version 9.4.0.1022 released today.

You can also try running the Intel Driver Update Utility.

Okay so I've had this laptop now for a bit, overall I'm excited by it's speed and the software does a pretty good job with either on power or on battery. The SCM and power settings make it have a very long battery life.

I'm very pleased with the performance of the laptop in games and in everything else.

I've had a few issues from here and there but MSI support has been more than helpful.

The keyboard I have has a little issue with the left side it seems to be a little loose at the corner and I can "push it back down" and it snaps into place for awhile but eventually goes back up. They keyboard is loose in the middle and I can press it down but it springs back up just wanted to see if others have that as well.

    Thanks so much.

On the bottom of the notebook look for screws marked by a keyboard icon in the plastic next to them.Make sure they are tight.

There's also keyboard retaining screws exposed when the touch control bar is removed.

The shiny black plastic that surrounds the keyboard on 3 sides and what the bottom of the keyboard snaps into is held down by 2 sided tape.

Last night when turning on my notebook the display color was way off, the white were a very dingy but still very bright lit egg/yellow color and I have a blue vertical line of about 3-5 dots in width up the left side of my screen that is only visible when on a colorful screen, not a white screen. I can plug the laptop into another monitor, or my TV and have the color display fine. But not on the actual laptop display so figure it is not my GPU at all.

I have only had the laptop for about 5 weeks, never been dropped, knocked, messed with. Anyone have similar issues suddenly happen, did it just start up bad and mess up in the process?

sorry i did fail to say i was running windows 7.
i end up reformatting and used the driver's you linked me both didn't work at all.

then i try to run the Driver utility in both IE and chrome.
in IE it just crash's instantly.
Chrome it just runs and runs and runs.
i don't know what else to do to get this working. and the thought of running Win 8 is sickening.

i do thank you Very much for your help.

Has anyone got the NVIDIA drivers from geforce.com to install? If I install the drivers from MSI first will the latest ones install over top of them or will I be stuck with an old version till MSI & NVIDIA stop being stupid?

On a stock machine you should be able to install the latest beta (326's) just fine. The older drivers require a modified .inf file and cards with a modified vBIOS also require a modified .inf, but if your machine is stock you should be fine.

I went with the latest WHQL. Took me a bit but I was able to modify the .inf files and disable driver checking, that worked well. Thanks for the reply :)

Hi guys. I am new here. Just got my new GT70 2OD Black Brushed Aluminium. I have a question. Whenever I connect an ipad/iphone, the device will automatically eject and reconnect. This happens in every few minutes interval. I cannot backup my phone/ipad because of this. I also have a usb 3 enternal HDD which behaves similarly. I cannot play movies or transfer data because the device will automatically eject and reconnect during transfer. This happens to both ports whether it is usb3 or usb2. However, my other external HDD that comes with a power supply doesn't have any problems. Neither does using the mouse.

I have already unchecked the option in power management so the usb does not automatically put usb device to sleep during idle to save energy.
The usb drivers are already up to date.

Quick question: if I upgraded my CPU to the 4900MQ from the 4700QM would there be any driver issues or anything I'd have to worry about from changing the CPU, or would windows play nice with the change without any additional work?
