Yes I had 2.4 and installed PC Meter Version 0.3.

Still no fan speed just memory, shader/GPU clock and temps. :)

Do you see fan speeds on yours?

Actually no, because I haven't tried it on my GT70 2OD. I have used this gadget on previous MSI notebooks and DT's, and it worked fine. Perhaps check the gadget's setting. You are gonna make me install this, just to find out for myself, aren't you, LOL!

    :D :D :D

I don't think the EC reveals the fan RPM to be harvested.

Does anyone here play any games with a controller? I'm used to using a PS3 controller and was thinking of trying MotionInJoy. Anyone have any experience with this or can recommend a good controller?

P.S. I won't be playing competitive multiplayer with it, just single player stuff. So I already know that that's a no no :D

Dave, are you able to provide instructions on how to overclock using afterburner and whatever you used for memory? I'm a complete n00b when it comes to this and I'm sure there are a few people in the same predicament.

Also for the record, here are my initial benchmarks for stock settings on 3DMark11 and Vantage respectively. Right on par with everyone else's :)

the 3 x msatas are on a special circuit board & connector so cannot be removed and put in a desktop. Looks like 300gigs of my data lost. My own fault for not making a backup.

In process of sending the laptop to MSI for repair. Appears that the laptop has a 1 year global warranty so I may be covered for the repairs. I'll see how its goes and I'll report back on this forum when it's sorted out.

afterburner can be used to overclock gpu core and gpu memory. It's quite easy. Install and run afterburner. Core setting on slider should say +0 when running at stock speed (no overclock). you can change that setting to +135 max. example if your stock core speed is 850 and you want it to be 950, set afterburner to +100 and click apply. same for memory. example if your stock mem speed is 2500 and you want it to be 2750, set afterburner to +250 and click apply. Press reset to put it back to stock.

I play some PC games with a controller. I've played Tomb Raider, Dark Souls and FFXIV beta so far with a PS3 controller through motioninjoy and it emulates the 360 controller really nicely. Works great on both Windows 8 and 7 from my experience. MiJ will also let you switch Xbox 360s LT and RT to PS3s R1 and L1 if you desire.

Yes, I considered this..... hence, why I said I'll have to install the gadget, to see for myself. Have you actually tried the gadget with this notebook, or are you speculating?

The reason is because eventually I hope to find a better fan speed tool for the 1763 and a way to monitor changes made to fans speeds in relation to temperatures. Like the custom presetting users can adjust MSI's Afterburner fan speeds controlling desktop GPU fans to kick in more aggressively at lower temps to make sure the system does not overheat during gaming.

I think there is more than just hitting the 100% turbo fan speed with headphones while gaming. :)

I really like where this is headed in the post below:

Thanks Dave. I really appreciate it. So the OC settings you have listed in the above quote are stable? Are you still running with those or have you managed to squeeze more out? Also, what temps are sitting at when running at those settings?

Thanks Tundra. I might give MiJ a go. I'd prefer a PS3 controller over 360. If it doesn't work out, I'll bite the bullet and just get the 360 one anyway.

So my dragon finally arrived today and I am more than pleased with it's performance so far. I went with the i7 4800MQ and swapped the 1TB HDD with a Samsung 840 250 GB SSD. Not the best but definitely planning on upgrading it myself more once prices drop a bit and hopefully it's compatible with next gen hardware. The keyboard at first took some getting used too. It just felt strange typing on it.. maybe I just got so used to the one on my older laptop.
The only problem I am experiencing right now is with an installation of McAfee. Hopefully somebody here uses it and can help me out, although I know many people tell me not to use it but I find easy and has worked for me flawlessly for years. So I have installed it and have a valid license, my problem is that when I try to update it, it says that I have no internet connection and when I go to look at the network map it says that it isn't connected to a network. I have tried both with both wifi and ethernet but it makes no difference. Anybody have any idea why that could be? I would post this on McAfee forums but I like you guys better as a community :p
Also a totally noob thing. I ave no idea where to find my serial number to register my notebook lol, can someone tell me where? I removed the battery and tried to use those numbers on the sticker but to no avail.

don't know about mcafee but the serial number is the bottom one of the 2 under the battery. It is also on the outside of the box your laptop came in.

Just to be clear: you have no Internet connection after installing McAfee? If that's true then McAfee is the culprit. I've worked on at least three computers with this issue before. No matter what I did, I couldn't get an active Internet connection with McAfee running (it was these incidents that turned me off McAfee for good).

Try disabling the firewall in McAfee settings. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling McAfee completely. And when I say completely, uninstall it and then run the McAfee removal tool, which can be downloaded from their website.

    Hello,

I am looking into the GT70 2OD-099UK (i7-4700mq, 16gb ram, 780m, 3x128gb ssd and 750gb 7200rpm hdd) and I had a couple of questions hopefully you might be able to answer

    1) What is the width of the gt70? I saw on the tech specs on the website it said 16.8 inches. My laptop bag only supports up to 16.3 inches so just wanted to double check
    2) Is the OS on the SSD or the HDD?
    3) What is the cooling like having only one fan?
    4) Is the 4700mq enough for the 780m?
    5) How does the "NOS" feature of using the battery and the charger work?
    6) Is there anywhere in the UK that offers configuration changes like the US? I can't seem to find anywhere that sells MSI models that will allow you to upgrade the CPU for example
    7) Does it matter where you buy it from in terms of the 2 year collect and return warranty? Is it as simple as registering on the website?

    Thanks very much!

On the serial number, watch out for "O" and "0", I was struggling with it accepting mine as well and that was my problem. Also I entered it exactly with spaces and dashes as well. And don't forget to print the email form they send you and mail back with copy of invoice... took about a week and they got mine accepted and finalized.

As for McAfee, I have no idea... I'm not a fan of them or Norton so unfortunately can't help.

Thanks for the help with the serial number and I am able to use the internet just the McAfee program itself isn't connecting. When updating definitions I get the error that says no internet available and it doesn't show the network map which is confusing but it still asks for program permissions as they request internet use through the firewall and block incoming connections. I've checked to see if windows firewall was blocking it but there were no entries for it and there are no traces of Norton that I can see ( which came pre-installed). I have re-installed it already but the same thing keeps happening.

Edit: Got it working. I decided to have a look at the open/blocked ports and found that the FTP ports were blocked which I believe to be the ones that McAfee (and most programs?) uses to update and access the internet, restarted my computer and it worked. I checked the network monitor and that came up too, so all is well. Strange that it would block ports that it uses for it's own services.

    Only when Afterburner is running.

To make it run all the time you would have to flash a custom VBIOS with those custom clocks you want .

How would you know it keeps the GPU overclock if you are not running Afterburner to check the clocks in the first place ??.

Its a software overclock and has to be done with a profile there is nothing in the BIOS that controls the GPU clocks so ill have to say that aint happening like you think.

It downclocks when you are not playing a game to save battery/reduce heat. In a game or benchmark it'll go to full clock speed of 850.

Im not talking about the same boot cycle here . I am talking about a shut down or reboot it wont hold the clocks.

If you set the clocks in Afterburner then close then app yes but shut your computer off and it wont.

It gets lost in the cycle and this is actually a safety feature for people that go too high with an OC the next time they reboot it wont be there.

This is also why MSI Afterburner gives you the option to create an OC profile 1-5 and then Apply automitcally when the app starts and another check box that you click in the settings so Afterburner starts with Windows.

Without all those above scenarios clicked and checked the clocks are not going to be there on the next boot and again that would only be once the app actually loads up if you have it set to start with Windows and automatically apply your OC profile.

I've been running 3dmark 11 and so far this is the best score I've reached. I even got scores around 7250's and this is with stock set up and 326.19 beta drivers (not a big improvement compared to 311.48 drivers the system came with.) I've seen other people here with scores around 7450's with 4700mq + 780m, so what can I do to improve my score to similar levels? Or is it driver related?

Just to say that I got back the laptop today from RMA. Indeed the MSI SSD board was faulty. I bought the computer in the US, and used the 1-year warranty to change the board here in the UK, in one week only. Gotta love MSI! :D
Departing from my old Asus G71v, having now a 5s-boot system is such a huge leap in performance..

Here are stock benches for 3x Raid0 Plextor M5Ms win8 (as it came from RMA with all the bloatware and such) only with write-back cache enabled:

In windows 8 the "shutdown" is not an actual shutdown so you can keep the overclock as long as it doesnt reboot as it should. I use GPUz and games to confirm, when closing Afterburner and shutting down my laptop, I still hold the 980/2900 clocks as well as the intel XTU OC.

Every now and then, specially after updating the OS, you do get an actual shutdown and reboot, forcing you to reapply the OC.

I tried overclocking using Afterburner by 131MHz. 3DMark11 kept crashing on me. I dropped it down a bit and ran it twice before it crashed again on the third time. The error I got is below:

    Not quite.
It's thanks to UEFI that we get this "feature". Actually Windows 8 unloads dlls from memory and saves them in the hdd. Next, on startup, it only loads those as the rest of the Core OS functions are already loaded. That's how the Secure Boot works. UEFI initiates directly its drivers and low level memory and interrupt processes (stored on that 300MB partition in a 64bit form) ready to operate. No need to launch everything from start as legacy mode does (like Windows 7 did). Then it's up to Windows 8 to boot (bootmgfw.efi) and load all the rest through its EFI interface (winload.efi). This is convenient for companies like MS and big OEMs because the security keys used to load the EFI portion of the OS are given directly from MS. They lock us to a Windows 8 only environment if we want these "security enhancement features". We loose the classic "Boot Manager" device initialisation code, the BIOS used to boot from storage media. In my dictionary this is called "I'm gonna stick it up your ... and you can't do anything about it". Running Linux becomes a bit of a hassle (forcing it out of the market...)
Big Corporations on the loose here :p
Fortunately some OEMs still enable the legacy boot code on their machine's Bioses (don't know how long this luck will last though) ;)

(i try in full perf mode, plugged and with all the exe files checked as "using nvidia high perf proc".
i try to reinstall drivers given with the computer.

Hi everyone!!! Just got my GT70 today!!! Was wondering if there was a guide on how to setup and unbox it. In other words, "change these settings" kind of things. I want to get it setup for maximum performance from the start. should I update all the drivers? If so, where can I find them. Thanks for the input.

I get that sometimes with to high of an OC as well. I can do 110 no problem but with the slider maxed out I will get that error. Just a poor OC'ing card is my guess. My memory will do about 450 before artifacts show up.

Every card is different, it can also depend on the memory clock.

First check that in Nvidia control panel global settings are set to auto-select the display adaptor. You want it like this so when you are not playing a game it disables the Nvidia card to save power. Then recheck your exes are set up custom profiles to use the high performance processor.

If it still doesn't work then try this:

    1. Shut down computer.
    2. Unplug AC power cable from back of laptop and remove the battery.
    3. Plug battery back in then plug ac power cable in.
    4. Boot up computer.

I had similar issue in the past and this was all I had to do to resolve the problem.

Are you certain they are running with your HD4600? The LED on your power button will help as an indication on which gpu is being used.

Use other monitoring software as well to try find what's going on.

New owner here, few quick things I noticed vs my old set ups:

LCD screen seems a bit washed out / dim compared to my old Dell 24" - probably to be expected.
USB 3.0 harddrive drops and redetects instantly. Annoying due to sound.
Gaming performance in windowed mode is terrible. 60fps+ full screen 1900 vs 20 windowed at lower res (1600ish)
On first boot, the HDMI sound does not show up under sound options (but the video is fine), even with both disable/disconnected devices being shown. (I have my TV connected to the laptop via a long HDMI cable)

Large 1tb take a half second to 'spin-up' - any way to turn this performance up?
What laptop pads does everyone use? Any specific fan locations that work best?

it could be possible your games are running off the igpu when you're on windowed mode, try setting everything to global settings for the high performance GPU or making individual profiles for every game that you play. I know when i first had my Gt70, sometimes the games wouldn't switch over, aka source engine games that would run off the igpu and would consequently get like 40 fps on tf2, stead of 6+ on the dedicated.
What kind of HDD do you have, is it a 7200 rpm or a 5400 rpm. Either way, mehanical HDDs are quite slow and antiquated these days, I would suggest that you get a SSD for a boot drive in the future, whether its a 2.5 SSD or an mSATA, I believe the MSIs require an mSATA caddy because the motherboard does not have an msata ssd port. The only thing i could think of to initally improve your HDD is by disabling a select amount of programs on start up. There isn't going to be magical software that will dramatically increase your mechanical HDD.
As for laptop pads, I use a notepal U3 from coolermaster. Its alright I guess, ut for bigger notebooks such as these, I would get something with bigger and faster fans.
