No sure exactly, but I do know these newer bios and EC updates are supposed to have tweaked power mgmt. (NOS), and cooling profiles. I got with MSI regarding the updates mentioned in the Tom's Hardware review, and they informed me those were the .502 (EC) and .707 (bios). Since, MSI has developed and sent me .503 and .709 for testing. These are further improvement tweaks over the previous versions, and if you are interested, send me a PM with an email address.

Thank Dave. Much appreciated. Just to clarify: Turbo Fan is Cooler Boost right?

Also, is there any way to disable the charm bar gesture. Every time I just want to move my cursor from the right side of screen to the left, it's always in the area where swiping left brings out the charm bar. It's really annoying. I've checked the mouse settings but can't find anything.

Yes turbo fan is cooler boost.
Don't know how to disable charms. Best to just google it.

I think that charms bar problem is not present in the Windows 8.1 Preview.

Hmm, well I had a hunt around google. Not much there apart from what you'd expect. I did notice newer versions of Synaptics driver software that has the ability to turn it off. I found a version, but it isn't specifically for 2OD, but the 0NE. I installed it and gave it a go. Didn't have the option to turn off tho. I don't really want to install 8.1 yet. I'm happy to wait for full release. Until then, I'll just put up with the charm gesture.

IMO,once the 8.1 Preview was released Windows 8.0 became obsolete.

I'm just about to start benchmarking, starting with CrystalDiskMark. What should I do before starting? Enable certain features? Anyone have like a quick quide on what tweaks to make before runing for each benchmark?

If you've run the WEI,set power option to High Performance, have write caching enabled, speed stepping in the bios disabled and Intel RST v12.6.0.1033 installed you should be good to go.

Benchmark in normal mode and also in Safe Mode to to see if installed software is effecting performance.

The best synthetic benchmark IMO is Anvil Storage Utilities.A screen shot will display more info than any other benchmark. It should be run on settings of 100% incompressible,0Fill and 46% Fill.

Thanks WTP! Just a couple of questions:

    1. How do I disable speed stepping in MSI stock BIOS? I had a look, but couldn't find a setting for it.

    2. If I disable speed stepping, does that mean CPU runs at max stock clock 100% of the time?

    3. Do you have a link for IRST v12.6.0.1033? Intel's website lists the latest version as v12.5.0.1066.

    4. When running Anvil (or any disk benchmark), what test size is ideal? 1000MB? That seemns to be the default.

    5. Should I have Hybrid Power and Cooler Boost on for disk benching, or is that only necessary for 3DMark?

    6. Every time I reboot, SCM sets my ECO settings back to OFF. Is there a way to permanently keep it on GAME mode?

Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it. I'm a n00b at benchmarking. Haven't ever done it before.

#1-I don't know about your bios It's normally in the CPU configuration.I own different model.

#2-With speed stepping disabled your CPU will always run at its stock clock.

    #3-http://station-drivers.com/page/intel%20raid.htm

#4-Whatever it's preset at when you run it.
In CrystaldiskMark under File the default is using 100% incompressible date while 0Fill will use 100% compressible.Different SSD controllers do better with one type over the other so both should be run.

Avill will show if alignment is OK.

#5-not necessary for SSD benchmarking but you can try both ways.

#6-Im not knowledgeable about that issue.Do other GT70 20D owners have the same issue?

All of us started out without a lot of knowledge but thanks to those that were willing to take the time and share I'm able to pass it on to you and others.

Thanks mate. Below are my screenshots of each test. I only did each setting once in standard OS mode and once each in Safe Mode. Can you tell me what you think? MSI claims read speeds of up to 1000MB/s with my setup, but I'm hanging more around the 850 mark. I couldn't disable speed stepping, but everything else is as you said.

These were done in normal OS mode:

    100% Incompressible:
    100%_Incompressible.PNG

    0% Fill:
    0%Fill.PNG

    46% (Applications):
    46%Fill.PNG

These are Safe Mode. Seems like the drives perform better in normal mode:

    100% Incompressible:
    100%SAFE.PNG

    0% Fill:
    0%SAFE.PNG

    46% (Applications):

    @Oodlemeister,

According to your SIG, your system is just SuperRAID (2x SSD's in RAID0), not Super RAID 2 (3x SSD's in RAID0)..... so as such, your speed of 850 is right in the ballpark where it should be.

    :)

Ahhhhh, I see now. Thanks $tR|k3r. I didn't realize the name was only for 3x SSDs. I was expecting 1000MB/s. But I guess simple extrapolation (3/3 = 1500, so 2/3 mnust mean 1000) does not apply in this case. :D Makes perfect sense though and I'll take your word on it. Well I'm def happy with that! Awesome! :D

Are your mSATA SSDs the stock SanDisk X100 supplied by MSI?

The 4K numbers at all Queue depths are the important numbers because this is the file size that is accessed most often(around 80%) in daily SSD usage.

The big sequential numbers are important in about 1% of daily disk access as measured with Microsoft diskmon. This utility captures all hard disk activity.

That's an amazing score, did you use the stock PSU?
So any issues with the modded vbios yet? So tempted to try this but have never done it before, what exactly do you have to do to install it?

Here are my scores after installing the 4900MQ (QS) CPU.
(yes I know... I'm a bad boy)

Note: My GT70 seemed a little sluggish after installing the new CPU (these benchmarks were run at that time), so the results may be reflecting that sluggishness to some degree.
Oddly enough, I ran WEI the other day and after that my GT70 has been performing like a champ!
I will need to re-run these tests and see if this has made any difference?

The following results are bone stock (no overclocking):

    hello,

I think I've messed up my GT70. I tried to update the bios to the latest one on msi website but it didn't work. Now my computer will not boot up. I only get a black screen when I power it on. No msi logo, no boot options, nothing. Tried pressing various keys but nothing happens. The fan spins, the touch sensitive buttons work i.e. I can turn the cooler boost fan on and off. I've removed the battery, back cover and disconnected the cmos battery but its made no difference.

Is there a way of recovering the bios. tried putting the bios on a usb stick and pressing the ctrl & home key using method found on google but didn't work.

Can anybody help. I imported it from US to UK so dont think i'll be covered under warranty.

Is it a motherboard replacement job or can i solder a new bios chip on it.

Hi guys, I finally decided to register for an account today having been lurking around for quite some time.

I wanted to share with you some of the experiences about this laptop and maybe hoping to even get some help on what I could do!

The one I have is the 2OD-064 which I ordered from GenTechPC with the option to repaste GPU & CPU. The first 2-3 weeks I noticed the temps on my CPU was only around 37-43 on idle which was totally fine! The GPU was around 39-43 on idle aswell.

However, lately (1 month later), the temps are now 57-64 for the CPU on idle and 48-52 for the GPU on idle. I have not noticed any differences in performance, but it is just that now I am forced to use Turbo boost when I play some demanding games and for many it is quite annoying for some, I didn't have this heat problem before so then it wasn't any issue.

Don't get me wrong, I really love GenTechPC and the team and I am not blaming anyone, I am just trying to figure out what I can do in order to maintain my lovely laptop! Any ideas would be very appreciated!

Sorry, English is not my first language.

    Thanks!

    /R

Yeah they're just the stock SSDs that came with the machine. Haven't changed them. So in saying that, are my 4K sequential reads in line with what should be expected?

    used stock PSU.

to flash vbios you need to use latest nvflash. there are always risks when flashing vbioses so if you have not done it before then it may not be worth the bother as you can overclock the stock bios to 980 core using msi afterburner and get scores 3dmark11 score 8000+..

Sorry if it already been asked, but how do I control the fan speed? besides the turbo boost button. I'd like to be able to create a profile that set X amount of fan speed depending on the CPU & GPU temperature. My laptop seem to get relatively hot without fan seem to be speeding up (cant head difference) until I press the cool button.
I assume I can't use MSI afterburner? since GPU doesn't have own fan.

    thanks for the help.

No idea. But that sucks. You now have a very expensive paper weight. I would just call MSI and speak with them and discuss options. This is exactly why I decided against even bothering to mess with the system bios. Unless its a huge fix or something I really want, I'm not messing with them. The system runs great as is.

UGH! Invariably, everytime we discuss bios, EC, and vbios updates, someone bricks their notebook.

Specifically, which GT70 model do you own? What is the filename of the bios file you attempted to flash. Is it WIN 8, and if so, what procedure (please post a link) did you use? Did you use THIS procedure? When pressing the power button, can you hold the 'DEL' key and get into bios? When pressing the power button, and holding the 'F11' key, do you get any boot options?

Sounds to me like you need to get with your reseller or MSI, ASAP!

    Best of luck......

Never had any trouble with bios updates over the years. Followed correct procedure and updated using w8_E1763IMS.707 raid bios. Initially it flashed ok but on reboot stuck on blank screen. No msi logo, no access to bios using any keys so it's bricked. Will contact msi support on Monday for help. Probably will not be covered by warranty so I can see a big bill coming my way.

Beemer did you switch to RAID ? Striker asked exactly which model you have but we can assume you have this exact model machine because it does not sound like you are new to BIOS flashing so one would think you are posting in the correct forum.

I have looked into blind flashing and maybe they changed the procedure for the newer UEFI based machines so i would keep hunting for a way to do that. It should have a way to reflash without seeing what is on screen.

Lastly have you tried plugging your machine into an external monitor/HDTV or anything just too see if possibly you are getting video out on everything but the internal screen.

Your machine still has signs of life based on the fans spinning and certain things still functioning so you might not be at a total loss .

Either way i would keep trouble shooting till i have exhausted every possible idea i can think of before sending it off or having it repaired.

I have had some close calls myself over the many years with a couple machines and with little little luck (black magic) i was able to get it working again.

Just change the colors of the text under the Black "A" when formatting your SIG. Just highlight the text you want to change and then select the color.

    The model is GT70 2OD 039US dragon edition 2.

I have tried plugging in external monitor and powering it on but nothing displays. Also removed nvidia card to see if it displays using intel graphics but made no difference.

I am trying to do a blind flash to recover it but it wont work. This is what I've done.

    1. downloaded the correct raid bios file E1763IMS.707,
    2. renamed it to AMIBOOT.ROM
    3. copied it to fat32 formatted usb2 stick. plugged in usb stick
    4. pressed power on then pressed ctrl & home key (ctrl + shift + numpad 7, ctrl +fn + pgup).

Nothing happens. USB does not get accessed (led not flashing). Also tried a cd. Am I doing anything wrong? What's the correct method?. Thank you.

    note:

I have also tried it without the harddisk, dvd drive and msata plugged in. So only usb drive is connected.

    Any more suggestions?

Apart from MSI is there anywhere I can buy a replacement motherboard?

    Thanks.

Unless you toggle it in the bios the MSI models will a dGPU to function at all. If it's damaged then you wont get anything from the machine.

    very helpful..
Besides the little program i found in this thread, where you can manualy set speed (not what im looking for) i didn't find any clear answers to my question.
Also found a post about being able to set it in BIOS for another MSI laptop model, I have latest BIOS and there is no where to set it
I need something like Asus smart doctor for their GPUs, need it to consider both my GPU and CPU temp

    Another question.

I was just updating my BIOS using this guide: http://www.msi.com/files/pdf/Win8_UEFI_BIOS_Update_auto_en.pdf

but never got to the end of step 13, during step 13, the laptop suddenly turned off. without me having to type "reset". Not sure how far it got down the installing ( i looked away for a few secs)

Started it again, went into BIOS, version seem to have been updated, did the step 14, started windows and everything seems to be working fine...

Did it flash correctly? or should i try to do it again?

Beemberboy one last question did you try using all the USB ports with the thumbdrive plugged in ?. On one of my older machines it was a specific port that you needed to use and for sure a USB 2.0 port.

Beyond that i really dont know what other advice to give because you tried everything i would have including pulling the GPU.

Generally rather than directing someone straight to a link I suggest a google search term to teach them how to search for something so I am not constantly playing fetch.

Try clicking on the first link, then looking at the signiture of the second poster.

I am well aware how to search the internet, If i had found the answer, i wouldnt have bothered to register and ask.
If you like to help people, then try to do it without sounding like you are talking down to people.

There is no mention of GT70´-2OD being compatible with that fan control tool

Yeah tried all ports. I think the only option now is to send it away for repair. Unless somebody else can think of a solution.

Another question. Does anyone know how i can get my files off the 3x msata raid?. Not got a backup.

Pull the drive and plug it into a desktop ?. You might be able to get it working well enough to yank the data off of it. Windows 8 should be able to install whatever drivers it it needs to get it into a functional state on another computer. Beyond that im not really sure because its setup in RAID and i dont think plugging that drive into something like an external USB adapter would work at all.

    @Beemerboy

MSI Notebook Replacement Main Board-Available For Most Models

MSI Mainboard replacements. I've ordered a few items/replacement parts from them in the past. They are expensive IMO, but it always shows up, in brand new condition and quick delivery. I expect you will pay 400-600$ for a replacement board. You may be able to find cheaper on eBay, or maybe even going direct through MSI and explain what happened. I would try for warranty service first, or maybe a friend in the US would help you out and take care of the warranty for you and then send it back? Goodluck!

The most commonly used fan controls for the moment, are Dave's GT70 2OD Fan Control, photos and download found HERE, and Pherein's Fan Tool, found HERE.

Fan speed out of the box? Not exactly sure what you mean, but it does register fan speeds on the fly. Did you try the gadget, and did you install the needed 'PC Meter Version 0.3'?

    :)
