Don't think anybody here a 6820HK as it's not offered in the USA for GT62VR.. but hopefully we'll see some outsiders with one. I'll try XTU tomorrow but looks like everything is completely locked out on the 6700hq over here.

Yeah, it's most likely not tuneable, damn Intel for locking the most used laptop CPU down from tuning - the 47xx/57xx series was tuneable with XTU.

But, it's just numbers, most gaming is all about the GPU, not the CPU for FPS, so you shouldn't see much of a difference in games.

That 6700k/980m CPU was running cool in games because it wasn't breaking a sweat, no load. If there was it would be running hotter. It's a sign as to why it's not needed for gaming.

That's some Graphics score from that 1070, meets my stock 980m SLI Graphics score head on :)

I sold my GT60 to a friend and fellow enthusiast, who btw won't use it only for word/excel & facebook, as did another friend which I sold my old GT780  o_O
    With the cash of the GT60 I'm building a nice i5-6600k + 1070 combo mATX desktop :D

Nice temps and performance on the GT62VR. I'd go with it but I need the flexibility (in terms of components) the desktop offers. Also I'm more stationary lately.

Don't see how to undervolt IGP in XTU, will have to learn throttlestop later tonight. So far this laptop has handled overwatch, mkx, sfv all at full graphics and maintain 60fps via gsync.

Another possible benefit of the desktop version is being able to use the new intel processors once they land since they run on current chipset. Very tempted to order one to compare too. :)

Well i'm not a super gamer.. Having a fast CPU is important to me as I do a lot of x264/h265 encoding that's why i'm still on the fence but yes, this laptop is nearly perfect and not a hitch or slowdown as is.. I truly don't have anything bad to say about the GT62VR with 1070 it's an amazing cold running little machine.

Yeah we basically have a 980ti/Titan X performance in a laptop.. It's unreal. I feel the 6700HQ is pretty "underpowered" when i'm doing non-gaming tasks though. But it seems to edge out my previous 4870HQ in my Asus.. Which is surprising since that CPU can load up all 4 cores at 3.5ghz I believe.

Yeah being it's MXM right now, also having a swappable CPU socket is nice on the MSI 16L1(2). Just need to get someone to order one, the more I keep using my GT62VR.. The more I wonder if it would be a waste of time and money (since you can't return the barebones probably without a $300 restocking fee). :/

DING DING DING. I don't want to get the barebones in hand only to discover some dirty little secret. The return process would most likely be a pain, and they would hassle you for some sort of restocking fee as you mentioned. Thats what has me holding off on ordering the barebones.

I was also thinking we should be able to upgrade it to a new kaby lake, but that would also depend on BIOS support for thew new CPUs. I also tossed around the idea of getting the i5 6600k. I was able to get that CPU and the 1070, and a few scrapped parts out the door for less than $1500. I think $1478 was the total. However, newer games like Battlefield 1 were destroying i5 6600ks and for $83 I can't see it being worth it.

@Diversion, you've sold me on the GT62VR w/1070, which is a unit that I had completely dismissed when it originally launched. So unless AW's new offering can deliver on noise/cooling promises they are making, this is what i'm buying at the end of the year.

Any particular games you want checked let me know. So far no game has fallen under 60fps max settings I've tried. I am running undervolt and 220 on core and mem. Firestrike scores are around 12890 mark on standard bloatware image.

Diversion - I see there is an official msi bios released 9/06 that supports oc on the 6820, might be worth a shot to see if it helps with your cpu issues. I wonder if we could upgrade to the 6820hk processor using this new bios on our models, it would be enough for me to not even consider the "desktop" version of this laptop.

I am finding the proc in this unit to be underwhelming as well, I've had the laptop hang for a few seconds while doing heavy multitasking. Hoping it is because of all the junk that cones pre-installed and a fresh install helps.

Quickly perform a clean install with no second thoughts. You will notice at least 20% more overall performance on Windows itself. Norton and all the boatware combined will really slow the system down.

@Diversion, I know you mentioned you were only stable at 63hz overclock on your screen.

Try this.. I've been able to get 65hz stable.

Download and use Custom Resolution Utility if you haven't already.
Also use Nvidia Control Panel custom resolution.

You will use Nvidia Control Panel for quick testing, and use CRU for setting the final settings.

When setting a custom resolution in Nvidia control panel, select manual timings and 64hz. Under the vertical column select total pixels to 1090. This should test stable. If stable, select 65hz and test for stability. If all checks out, go to CRU and do the same manual timings and save it. Restart the driver and 65hz should now work fine. 65hz for me has been the wall on both laptops with these settings. Still better than 60hz.

I also recommend with the higher refresh rate to turn on both gsync and fast sync in the nvidia control panel. It will offer the best overall experience both above and below native refresh rates. Tearing will be totally gone.

Correct, Kabylake should work in the barebones down the road but possibly it might have weird problems until a BIOS update comes out to correct it.. We're not certain how frequently MSI updates the BIOS on the 16L1.

Yeah, i'm in the same boat as you but I decided not to wait to hear about the new AWs.. Another downside to the AW was the 7.7lbs+ for the 15" where as the MSI is 6.5lbs loaded up. I'm certain the AWs will have decent reviews and possibly really good cooling as well given how serious the cool system appears from the pictures of it opened up. At most, if the AW is even better, I may sell this off and grab an AW instead but i'm actually hoping the GT62VR wins out on cooling/fan noise because it's such a nice unit.

I play League of Legends a lot and still had tearing with G-Sync turned on :/ And I have my panel at 63hz like yours.. I'll have to try the Fast Sync option and see if that helps. I think it's a League of Legends problem though, the game doesn't acknowledge panel Hz like most other games, it just lets you lock your FPS at certain amounts or turn V-Sync on.

Awesome! Can you perform full tests on the 6820HK for us? Prime95 (latest version) with Small FPU torture test? Give us what clock speed it's set at, and tell us your temps please?

Also see if you can hit 4.0ghz and rerun the test and report back on temp please?

    PRETTY PRETTY PLEASE?!?

Install XTU and go to all controls. At bottom where it says multiplier are they grayed out? If so you might need to update your bios off msi's website.

GT62VR barebones with i7 6700k has been ordered! :) I'm impatient and did express shipping. $1658 out the door with fast shipping. I already have 16gb DDR4 2400mhz HyperX on hand, and an Intel 8260 wifi card. I'll be putting in some sort of M.2 drive and have a 256gb SSD ready to go.

My GT62VR with 1060 will be returned to microcenter over the next couple of days. Will miss it,but figure this 6700k and 1070 will give me a few years of entertainment.

BF1 uses more than 4 cores effectively? And, those other 4 cores in the 6700k aren't real cores, but pseudo cores. Typical performance increase when enabling the Hyper-threaded cores is 12%, not a lot, and some tests show decrease in performance when HT is enabled.

Link to the 6600k BF1 results?

Your 6700k can disable the HT cores, if the BIOS supports it, I know @Prema added that to the P870 series, at least. That reduces power drawn and heat generated, and can let you get further OC on the remaining 4 active cores. :)

Was that 6600K OC'd? That's the key advantage of the K series CPU's, and should make up for not having the hyper-threaded cores.

I'll check out the BF1 reviews and see what I can see.

For the most part AAA games, and lesser games, are GPU sensitive with only a small CPU component.

Most videos with active monitoring showing CPU usage shows low usage while the GPU is at 99%. As long as the CPU can feed the GPU, all's well.

The 1080p usage shows most CPU usage running frames full out, but more and more people have G-sync + V-sync (system, not game), or run a frame limiter to keep the game from spilling Frames not used over the refresh limit.

And, the 15.6" screen is only OC'ing to 65hz max, so there shouldn't be a CPU bottleneck even with the 6700HQ.

    @Diversion

BTW, I thought this thread had the 16L1 in the Title, I was about to say maybe someone will end up seeing that and buy one, so we can get a comparison :)

Most guys on the forums during the beta were reporting crazy high CPU usage, and stuttering. All my friends that had Haswell i5's overclocked were getting intermittent stuttering. CPU usage pegged at 90-99% is a bad thing and it creates a GPU bottleneck with newer cards and will get worse with the refresh of these consoles. Videos I've seen on youtube show GPU usage dropping from 99%, while my i7 6 core, and skylake 4 core i7's do not seem to show this. We're at that point where having a full blown quad core i7 will be minimum for smooth game play while i5 quads will work you won't get the best or same experience. There is a reason why an i5 6600k is the MINIMUM cpu recommended.

Reminds me of the days of the first quad cores and guys were still buying high freq dual cores. Were fast approaching a time where i7s are the new min and higher core i7s were be the recommended CPUs.

Wild, sounds like a bad implementation to me, maybe they will get around to optimizing it before release. It's a Beta, after all.

Remember, these games need to run on consoles too, no such thing as a 6700k in a PS4 / XBone :D

Granted a lot of the time he is getting 99% usage, but there are plenty of times he isn't. It stutters and drops GPU usage down like crazy. The CPU is bottlenecking that GPU no doubt about it. My "weak" i7 6700hq did not have this issue, and my desktop i7 6 core stayed pegged at 99% all day long on a GTX 1080. i5's are quickly approaching their limits no matter how overclocked they are.

What??! So you *tested* the 6700HQ in BF1 and it's ok?

    So, what's the problem? :)

You were talking like you *had* to have the 6700k to solve this problem, but it now comes out the 6700HQ ran BG1 AOK?

Sheez man, you got us all worried for nothing :D

I thought the silly thing was judging a CPU/GPU combo based on a rough Beta game   o_O

LOL nooooo I meant the 6600k. The 6700hq even with its low clock speed in certain applications and games are far more efficient and at least for a 1060 does NOT bottleneck at all. @Diversion will have to supply you will data on a 1070 though. ;)

I am only getting the 6700k because it's cheaper than an MSI retail with 6700hq. Why not have a full blown and unlocked desktop chip? Powwahhh!! :) Plus now I won't have a dragon logo or flashy lights lol. Although rumor has it the flashy lights make your laptop faster.

Cool, so it looks like the programmers are using Skylake and not doing a competent job of compiling to optimize for other generation CPU's - if that's even possible (it should be).

Hey, you got your 6700k, you got's nuthin to worry about at all now... (heat, noise, a re-paste job, BIOS support) nothing at all :D

We need to hear how that 15.6" chassis designed for 45w CPU's makes out with the 91w monster CPU... or does it have different heatplate / heatpipes / fans??

From what I can see the heatsink layout is slightly different. I don't plan to run the CPU at 91W. I honestly may shoot for around 3.5-3.8ghz across all 4 cores and undervolt the **** out of it. Will be interesting to see what I can get away with. I think I'll manage it just fine and as soon as I get my grubby hands on the beast I'll update you all. I don't expect to see it for a couple of week though.

At least give it a try at stock speeds, don't worry about underclocking it to start, undervolt yes. :)

The CPU can take the heat, so it can / will run all day at 90c++, so I wouldn't worry about it.

It's the fan noise that might get bothersome, but we don't know yet - it might just be that gentle Whoosh! sound the other mid-large MSI's make.

Before dropping the multiplier on all 8 cores, I would try to disable the HT cores to reduce power/heat and OC the other 4 cores. Most games only use 4 cores.

    Pretty exciting stuff :)

So, order from the UK, what's wrong with that?

You can get a US PSU and AC cord from most sellers I have seen over there as well.

Work out the service and other details with the staff of the seller, US service on an International Warranty should work.

Then there's only the cost, but you will be paying ex-VAT so it should be cheaper than advertised.

The shipping (insured) shouldn't be too bad, and well worth the 6820HK... do they have other panel choices as well?

I'm not from the US and I can't get any custom agent to work with the Uk.

I have to pay like 500usd extra for getting it from US and that's the cheapest option I have...

Can't justify paying like 1k more just because of the cpu haha

Well, you don't know if it's $1k more, you don't have anyone that's stated numbers yet, it might be cheaper than $500 even.

I could have sworn UK sellers did world-wide shipments.

Maybe put your agent to work and build a relationship with a UK MSI reseller?

    Good luck :)

They do, but I can't get to import the damn thing myself. I have to send it to a warehouse in the US and then get it here.

Yeah, only having 4 threads is going to seriously start being a hindrance in the near future.

Most of the PSU's i've seen work at 110-240v 50/60Hz and the cord just attaches to the PSU. Most likely any cord that can connect to the PSU brick will make it work. I think in the interest of cost savings the only thing that's different is the cord from the wall to the brick, that's a $2 part.

Fans are the same across the 16l1 and GT62VR so there won't be any extra noise.. and even at 100% fan speed it's tolerable.. yes it's louder but nothing like what I experienced on the GS63.

Very excited to hear about what your 16l1 will do.. also will be the deciding factor if I buy one myself! Any ideas on when it will be shipped yet?

Well, that's a bit of a problem then isn't it?

Using the same heat exchanger and exhaust fan set up designed for a 45w CPU with a 91w CPU wouldn't be enough, I don't expect.

Same fans but different heatsink and pipe set up. The fans are over engineered based on the temperatures I'm getting for the 6700hq.. cooling the 6700k technically should be fine.. should be.. hopefully..

So some interesting development tonight. Played a slew of games and finished with overwatch after having the unit on nearly all day. After 45 min of constant gameplay with gsync enabled I was throttling the gpu due to heat using the MSI dragon center "auto" profile. If you switch it to the cooler boost profile or hit the max cooling button on the laptop temps would stay right at 77-78 degrees and not throttle. I verified the throttle using afterburner and watching the frequency in real time. Using auto it would go 86-88 degrees fairly quickly. Not a huge ordeal and I'd imagine a repaste on the gpu would help quite a bit as the cpu stays extremely cool in this unit.

I went to fry's tonight to look at the gt73vr and I think I will probably swap this unit out for that depending on Talon's results. Size wise it isn't that much bigger, just a tad heavier and won't have to worry about temps with a desktop proc. I really love the track pad on this unit and noticed the 73vr has a different one all together which is a shame.

Welps, G-Sync is broken on my GT62VR.. It doesn't work right at all.. I used the Nvidia Pendulum G-Sync demo and use the test pattern for testing.. I get the same amount of tearing on no vsync mode as I do in G-sync mode when using the "Simulate 60 fps" option.

Interestingly, if I allow the demo to simulate 40-60 fps, there is no tearing and G-sync is doing it's job.. But if I lock the demo to "Simulate 60 fps" then it tears like crazy.. Also in Overwatch, constant tearing with G-sync enabled even though it's at 60 fps locked.

@Talon and @rancid Can you guys do the above test and let me know if you're getting tearing with G-sync enabled.. Also if you can tell me which driver version from Nvidia you're using.

EDIT: MAKE SURE FAST SYNC is OFF for this test..

Update: Maybe i'm misunderstanding how G-Sync works but it seems to only work UNDER 60fps.. If your game is reaching and holding 60fps.. G-Sync is disabled.. Which is odd because you don't have any G-sync so it's tearing like crazy. So am I to believe you have to either enable in-game V-Sync or use Nvidia's Fast Sync now? Pretty sure my previous Asus G751 would do 100hz with G-Sync on and have no tearing at 100 fps.. I have three PG279Q Asus G-Sync monitors paired to my SLI Titan X desktop I need to test now :/

This is how gsync is supposed to work. It's a 60hz monitor or 64/65hz when overclocked. Gsync doesn't kick in until your fos drops below 60hz/fps. At that point it matches screen refresh and fps to eliminate tearing and smooth out gameplay.

Even on my desktop gsync display ou can occasionally get tearing.

Gsync and fast sync is your best bet.

Weird, I guess I never noticed that G-sync never worked at your panel's native refresh? So why does software V-sync stop all tearing at your screen's native refresh, but G-Sync doesn't? Seems like a weird thing for G-Sync not to do.. "We make the game look amazing at 59 fps, but not 60 fps at your 60 hz" .. Makes no sense.

Nvidia makes it sound like people can't run games at their native refresh rate so therefore G-sync is doing it's job.. But I still don't understand why G-sync can't sync frames at your panel's limit but V-sync can by itself.

Anyways, I set my panel to 63hz and then made Overwatch run at 60 fps and like magic, G-sync was working and it was silky smooth. I didn't even use Fast sync for this.. Would Fast Sync + G-Sync introduce some input lag like regular V-sync does? I bought a G-sync laptop to eliminate v-sync lag! :p
