Has anyone patched their system with Intel ME FW update tool? MSI has just released it for the 6th gen while 7th gen had it a week earlier, anyone?

Btw i have updated my BIOS to latest so that i can patch the Intel ME FW, do you know if you also need to update the EC firmware? (The update guide doesn't mention it)
I haven't had issues with it so i would rather keep it on factory version. -
I have noticed something really weird. After the BIOS update my power limits have changed to 200W for turbo boost and the short window went down to 0.250 seconds, i've reset my bios to defaults already, i don't understand, anyone else had the same issue? Use Intel XTU to check your power limits btw.
Of course since i remember what were my values before that i changed it back to 45W and 56,2W and moved the time window up to 28 seconds.hmscott likes this. -

2nd of all i actually dont know where i got it from, got it from my granddad as a makeup present because the computer he bought for me last christmas broke, im pretty sure it was from amazon tho
also what turbo fan button? -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Read your Quick Start Guide...or just look for the 3rd button to the left of your power on/off button with the fan icon just above it...punch it and you will hear your fans ramp up.
Then...download the manual at https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT62VR-6RE-Dominator-Pro#down-manual. Read itPapusan and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -
anyways, imma click it and just hope my pc doesnt explode, if i dont respond blame the guy above me

I'm having issues with the gpu fan. About 4 weeks ago it was making a grinding noise so I ordered a replacement. Now the new fan is doing the same thing. Dragon center reports it's going from about 400rpm to 1200rpm over and over.
Why is this happening, you think?

Has anyone noticed almost ALL of these GPU fan reports started within a 2 month time frame? Literally 90% of them?
Are you using the windows Fall Creator's Update, or did you update windows to any "minor" other updates?
Open the laptop and check the YELLOW CABLE on the fan. Someone said that if this cable is damaged, the EC cannot detect the RPM, then will spin the fan up and down repeatedly in an attempt to detect it. But eventually it stops working.nattapol attatippaholkun and Donald@Paladin44 like this. -
What is the significance of the yellow cable?

Edited in last post. Someone had a physically damaged yellow cable and their fan sped up and down the same way.
It sounds a lot like these failures are because of the cables getting damaged somehow, rather than the motors not working.
Someone would have to take a "dead" fan (which won't spin up at all) and jury rig or splice it it to a 5v power source (preferably one with a fan speed adjuster) on another part of the wire and see if it works that way. It could be any part of the fan cable, including the connector, that is failing. I HIGHLY doubt it's the motor.
black is ground. red is +5v. Yellow is RPM. (at least AFAIK).Vasudev and Donald@Paladin44 like this. -
As an FYI, when I put Dragon Center to "Cooler Boost" the fan seems to keep pace with the CPU fan at 3500-4000rpm and does not sound odd at all. Both fans sound the same in that mode. As soon as I switch it back to "Auto" the GPU fan starts making grinding noises again and keeps going up and down in RPMs while the CPU stays pretty much around the same number (1150rpm, or so).
Should I flash the BIOS? I haven't tried that yet.Donald@Paladin44 likes this. -

If the GPU is making 'grinding' noise, it means the spindle needs to be cleaned and opened up because there is resistance from no grease or hair/dust buildup. Or some sort of imbalance or mechanical problem. But usually this will also cause noise at max fan speed and lower max RPM as well (seen this with ball bearing desktop fans).
If there is no grinding noise at all and only the fan speed up and speed down, then its a problem with the RPM sensor.
There is a youtube disassembly guide on how to open up and clean laptop brushless DC fans. But this can only be done if there is a small washer ring that can be popped off the spindle. Some fans were not able to be disassembled though.Donald@Paladin44 likes this. -

A lot of problems with the fans on MSI. Ask for replacement.

I have the same problem with extraneous fan noise, similar to friction. This has nothing to do with Windows, programs and firmware. This is a massive ( reject, defect) of fans in new laptops, most likely associated with defective bearings. I ( dismantle, demount) the fans and bearings many times, but it was not a result of any results. I bought other bearings of Chinese products and made a replacement. But they sounded even worse. I think they can do nothing more. Only completely replace with new ones. But I'm assuming that both new ones can have this ( reject, defect) . This is the fault of the fan manufacturer. They should be able to make quiet fans for laptops at a price of 1500 - 2500 $

no wires, and no foreign objects there.
The sound comes from 1. The bearings themselves, and maybe from 2. The fan's touching the body or the magnet. In the 2nd I'm unsure. But in general the problem is an imperfect design of the fan that can not be quiet. This is not an isolated case, it is a massive defect (many laptops out of the box) A series of defective fans.Papusan and Donald@Paladin44 like this. -

( " That's great to hear. Yeah no turbofan. Only figured out what that button was yesterday It makes it sound like a vacuum cleaner. And that's probably another reason I shouldn't look at getting any other laptop because this thing is WHISPER quiet even when gaming. I seriously don't hear it, headphones or not. I didn't realize how annoying loud fans are until I pressed that turbo button. Cool to have the option but would be horrible if my laptop was always like that (like maybe the Razer Blade or Alienware). ") ...?

If installing a new fan fixes the problem (happened to me, fan failed outright) then the fan is broken. Probably some cheap component on the fans controller is under spec or low quality. So many failures.Papusan likes this. -

Check the housing and make sure it's not too tight.
