Hey, the noise was gone after a minute, so I can't do those tests you recommended to see if it is still there. It was the first time I heard it and it was soon gone after I started using the computer. i'll try your advice if it happens again.
I still have all the same drivers that came pre-installed, realtek 6.0.1.7855. Might be time to install some updated drivers, seeing as I can't even open geforce experience ("geforce experience encountered an error and must close.") on this pre-installed windows 10.

So I've been shopping around for a laptop and I think I may be landing on the GT62VR, the 1070 model. That $1400 Microcenter deal would be great but alas, I don't have one close to me.
Anyway I'm just looking to get a bit of insight from people on this model in regards to a few things. Since this is a 15.6" model I'm wondering if 1) The 1070 is cooled appropriately, and 2) How is the battery life? I fully understand in a laptop like this you're not going to get much time away from outlet and I'm fine with that, but let's say I played something like Civilization VI on the battery. If I started at full charge, can I get about 2 hours?
Also, is the 6700HQ in any noticeable way a bottleneck to the 1070? I hate even using that term because I feel it's so overused, but well here we are.
Any other input would be appreciated. Thank you.Last edited: Oct 19, 2016 -
ok guys got 2nd laptop and light bleed is significantly less. Enough that I will put up with it. Of course I do have some serious keyboard lag. Anyone else have that? definitely doesn't register all my strokes. Also, I only uninstalled Norton. Anything else I should be uninstalling? Thanks!
EDIT: Ok just went on the interwebs and google drive (Docs) and typed a bunch and perfect, fast typing. So must be this jank website All good on the keyboard. Anyone got a guide to setting up this comp though before I start installing steam and all my games? -
Supposedly the ASUS gets like an hour or so while gaming on battery so maybe this gets 1.5 hours??
I was told the 6700HQ is only about 5% slower than the 6820HK with a lot more power savings but maybe that was a lie. 6700HQ is literally 2nd best CPU you can get in any normal laptop so I wouldn't think it would be a bottle neck. If you had a 6700HQ and a 1080GTX it might be a concern.Talon likes this. -
Hmmm something strange just happened, hdmi port suddenly not working. Connected my laptop to the tv but it wouldn't do anything. Tried a different hdmi cable and a different hdmi port on the tv, no luck.
Rebooted the comp and now it's working again. Weird stuff, any reason it would do this? -

It is the 3rd "best" CPU in terms of mobile, the 2nd best being the 6920HQ.
Anyways, Talon already helped us, as well as Diversion and others, to test that indeed 1070 is bottlenecked by the 6700HQ on intensive CPU games, up to 25%. -
-
I couldn't find the specific post with the details:

Details guys? What games, and what were the FPS for both 6700HQ and 6700K with 1070?
So far @Talon only voiced an *opinion* about the 6700HQ and 1070, no factual details:
Who said they saw a 20 FPS difference between WOW runs? I asked what FPS both runs had, so we know the % significance, but so far I didn't see any answerLast edited: Oct 19, 2016 -

It was WoW, right? A screen shot showing CPU utilization of both would also be interesting, to see the 99% CPU utilization points for the "6700HQ" speed in game - how often - and the 6700K stock speed CPU % utilization to see the headroom.
Plus, was this worst case? Or same for the whole game? Or, a scripted benchmark run.
Most games I see don't have much CPU utilization even with the Pascal GPU's, so it's likely not noticeable for most games.
The CPU load seems to happen at high FPS, and be mitigated by moving to 1440p or 4k.
One of the problems with that 120hz screen is that the CPU / GPU need to deliver 2x (more?) throughput over the 60hz screen, 2x the FPS, so it's going to run the GPU and CPU at heavy load, getting hot and running the fans on high.
The LGA / Pascal laptops have had a hard enough time cooling @ 60/75hz / FPS, I think we will see even hotter running laptops pushing FPS to a sustained 120 FPS to match the new 1080p/1440p 120hz screens.Last edited: Oct 19, 2016 -
That particular test I mentioned is Battlefield 4. Diversion tested also with WoW and he found what you mentioned, a difference in FPS. Basically any modern multiplayer game that is CPU intensive, at very high refresh rates will push the CPU utilization to 100%. I can get that, for example, with The division. I think witcher 3 can do this too in novingrad.
Anyways, this only affects high refresh rates, and specifically on high CPu intensive games, because some like Gears of War 4 can run like 150 or more fps on the CPU (measures by the internal benchmark) on CPUs like mine.
Higher res and/or lower refresh rate will put the burden back on the GPU as it will struggle to get the extra eye candy.Kevin@GenTechPC and hmscott like this. -

Alienware just did that, you can only get a 6820HK if you get a 4k model, the 1440p 120hz screen can only get the 6700HQ, which makes no sense.
The GT62VR should also come with 6820HK models.
Streaming should be done with a separate machine anyway, not in the gaming machine.
Most people don't do anything requiring more performance than they use in games.
Browsing the internet and video watching won't phase a 6700HQ.Papusan likes this. -

And it is not all who switch to new computer every year or two.
6700Hq is not much faster than a medium old man Haswell Mq from early 2013. The only difference is that Skylake run cooler. This can be compensate with better paste on your OLD Haswell. The need for processing power can be changed... But you have not set aside money for new purchases. What then? Oh'well.., No thanks, you don't need more powerhmscott likes this. -
"Future proof"ing a laptop configuration isn't possible, even shotgunning CPU / GPU choices with the hottest running highest power components.
Look at the P870DM 6700K with a 980, it's dino droppings now
Nobody wants it for what it's worth, it's going for rock bottom pricing, and people are still selling them. No longevity there
Get what you can use now, don't go Costco big on it, you'll find another gaming laptop you can't live without before your current gaming laptop's performance has expired.Last edited: Oct 20, 2016 -

The CPU utilization is not 99% as reported for non-HT CPU's... this video isn't showing a CPU bound situation...it's showing that the CPU is thermal throttling
The CPU is over 92c more often than not, and that means it's thermal throttling, not CPU bound.
He probably is running on the default fan curve, hasn't raised up the rear of the laptop, and isn't undervolting.
It's a CPU intensive game running on the stock CPU voltage and stock quiet fan curve.
Given what I am seeing in the video, I can also think of 2 things.
#1, what's the point of running at >60 FPS when the screen is set at 60hz - it's wasted CPU and GPU power thrown off as heat without giving any value. It's not a realistic usage scenario that any thinking owner would use.
#2, Who puts up a video with all these tuning failures, and practical errors?
It may be we really can't show a CPU bound situation on the GT62 internal display anyway, due to the lack of a 120hz screen.
At 60hz/64hz (max reported display OC), running G-sync with useful rendering of frames you aren't going to overtax the GPU / CPU.
It may be only possible to get the CPU as a limiting factor with an external monitor doing useful FPS rendering at 100hz or greater.
But, you need to keep the CPU temps under 90c, and watch thermal throttling before claiming CPU bound vs CPU thermal throttling.
Come on guys, isn't there someone with a GT62 6700HQ 1070 playing BF1??
Let's see the game played on a nicely tuned system and get some real info on whether the 6700HQ is CPU bound on a 1070 in BF1
Update: It looks like tuning is needed as well on the 16L13 to get the temperatures down when running BF1:

Additionally I'll simply setup my laptop to my external 144hz 1440p G-Sync panel and then test at 1080p. Not everyone games on the internal display. Not being CPU bound is even more important this generation because these are desktop class GPUs and consumers can buy this laptop as their gaming rig. They can travel with it, and then plug it into external high refresh rate monitor at home.
This laptop is so fast that actually considered selling off my desktop GPU and using an old 7850 2gb just to give me a display with my 5820k. I am having trouble justifying having both a 1070 laptop and a 1080 desktop. Can't use both at the same time unfortunately.hmscott likes this. -

You guys are in luck. Eurocom plans to supply 120Hz 15.6" screens for the Tornado F5. And they will be compatible with the GT62VR too. I'm afraid the 6700HQ won't have enough juice to fully support such high refresh rates

The CPU's and systems, 16L13 - GT62 - are different enough that I wouldn't waste your time doing this.
This is the GT62 thread after all, there will be some GT62VR 6700HQ 1070 or even a 6820HK + 1070 owner coming along soon enough to give us a real result.
Maybe @Diversion can run games @60hz and @120hz / 60 fps and 120fps, on both systems set at their best performance and cooling tuning - like he would for gaming, and post video's with Rivatuner OSD for CPU / GPU utilization + temp + FPS for a nice comparison.
Since @Diversion has both he could also do the native test of BF1 and other CPU bound games directly on the GT62 6700HQ 1070 to find / show 99% CPU utilization bound gaming, and how far the 6700HQ will take you.Last edited: Oct 20, 2016 -
So trying to follow this discussion. I just bought the MSI GT62VR 6RE Dominator Pro which has a 6700HQ and 1070 with a 1080p 60hz screen. I bought it for $1,400. The cheapest 1080 gtx laptop I found was like $2,800 (also from MSI) and the cheapest 6820hk cpu I found was $2,100.
Can anyone please link me cheaper laptops if they exist? I'm still well within my return window. IFFFFF those numbers are about right, the 6820hk is not worth $700 for 1080p gaming right? and the 1080 is not worth doubling the cost of my laptop or another $1,400 since I only care about 1080p on such small screens (15" or 17" laptops). AAAAAAAND I already decided 17" laptops are too cumbersome for my use.
Just wanted to make sure cause 1 or 2 of you guys are making it sound like the 6700HQ is a piece of crap and worthless at this point and I don't want to spend $1 let alone $1,400 on something that is already garbage. Now if those 1 or 2 people are just exaggerating and carelessly using hyperbole, then I'm good and will keep this laptop My total budget was $2,600-$2,700 anyways so gtx 1080 is mostly out of reach. But I could get the 6820hk if it was really that awesome of an upgrade and not that much more than $1,400. Thanks!
P.S. - the 6820HK must be linked to a 1070 or 1080 otherwise i don't care about it. Found an MSI with 6820HK on amazon but it's linked to a 970m so pointless for gaming.
Oh and my primary use on this laptop is 1080p ultra graphics steam gaming. Everything else is secondary.hmscott likes this. -
Update as I keep adding games to the laptop. Just installed the Battle net client mainly so i can install Hearthstone and Overwatch and I was downloading Hearthstone consistently at 57MB/s!! The crazy thing is I pay for 300mb service from Comcast and I was getting close to 450mb/s speed! This Killer wifi card is INSANE! When I did Overwatch it was around 32-34MB so around 270mb/s which i'm still cool with. I forgot to mention I'm doing this wireless downstairs while my router/modem is upstairs on the other side of the apartment.
I just did a speedtest on speedtest.net (their beta site) and i got 196mb down and 30mb up. So i'm not sure how i did that on Hearthstone....Anyone else have experience like that? Anyways, damn this wifi card is AMAZING! Also an 8ms ping! Ultimate gaming laptop HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!hmscott likes this. -

What router make / model / firmware version are you using?
If the Wifi vs Ethernet speeds are the same, that's what matters, I use Speedtest.net and Comcast Speed Test. -
It's the same for "professional" reviews with similar high temp results, laptops with other Skylake CPU's that come out with BIOS voltages too high and fan curves to low in aggression at keeping things cool.
I think you've seen high temps, and you didn't give up. I guess it's a natural reaction to diss others setups, but you have to take into account it's the same with all laptops that aren't well tuned and exposed to the heaviest loads, they are gonna run at the hottest temperatures.
You've recently come across a high load high temperature situation with Asus RealBench, and are reducing clock rate OC, so it's everywhere - you can push anything to make it look bad, on purpose or accidentally -

So is the GT62VR with the 1070 worth getting? If the CPU is such a bottleneck why not just stick with the 1060 version for 1080p gaming? I would probably get the 1070 anyway just because the resale value when i go back to the UK means it would probably sell for a similar amount in a year as i buy it for now, which is pretty insane. US electronics prices ftw!
For example in a game like ARK if i play with a 1060 vs a 1070 will there be any difference? Or not because of the bottlenecking?hmscott likes this. -

Manufacturers roll out firmware updates for GeForce GTX 1070 due to memory Issue
https://www.guru3d.com/news-story/m...for-geforce-gtx-1070-due-to-memory-issue.html
I wonder if this problem shows up on mobile?
"If you own a GeForce GTX 1070, you might want to pay attention to this news-item as you could be effected. There have been some problems reported with certain GeForce GTX 1070 cards. After further investigation it became apparant that the issues like flickering and poor memory overclocking results on the memory sub-system are graphics memory related."
...
"I've been doing some rounds at the manufacturers with the following info (we'll update as feedback gets in). A number of manufacturers is or have been working on VBIOS updates:

New question: Will i notice a difference in speed between games on the 1tb 7200rpm drive and an external 5tb or 8tb drive (still 7200rpm)? Some places I have read yes, they are terribly slow even on USB 3.0 and you shouldn't do it and other people have said it's fine. If it's near the same speed I am gonna buy it b/c 1tb isn't going to cut it and i didn't want to get a 2tb 2.5" since they are all 5400rpm and i don't have the money for a 2tb-4tb ssd.hmscott likes this. -

The big difference is with power saving on SATA III internal vs USB power saving.
The other difference between HDD and SSD, is the latency generated by parked heads, spun down platters, and slept drivers for both.
You can go into the Device Manager and disable both the USB and drive power saving modes, that fixes the computer side, but then you need to download the USB drive vendor control software and drive software, and disable the power saving USB controller in the box and the power saving in the drive.
Then the drive firmware heat / power mitagation software is still active, and that needs to be shutdown with software like CrystalDiskInfo - by drive - or with something like quiethdd globally.
https://sites.google.com/site/quiethdd/
With an SSD you only have to worry about the laptop USB controller and the external case USB controllerLast edited: Oct 21, 2016Diversion likes this. -
Yeah I just downloaded GPU-Z and my memory in this laptop is Samsung. So I would assume everyone in this thread is good or do you think MSI chose Micron for one of their manufacturing runs of this particular model?
