This was to determine the root cause to find out if the issue was caused by WiFi adapter or Nahimic, or combination of both.

So my new GS73VR has developed a squeaky GPU fan. It is the main GPU fan I determined this after opening the back and I found it is the fan closest to the side.
It seems to maybe rubbing or something but it is rattling and squeaky...and annoying!

It looks like it would be a complete removal of the GPU heat sink to replace. Is this right?
In order to look at it I had to of course unscrew the warranty void sticker.
In light of the new ruling about these stickers I wonder if I can send it back to replace the fan and not have a fight on my hands.

They were never valid in the first place. I've been removing my sticker for years and there's nothing they can do to enforce it.

I had to send mine back for a similar issue. They had it back to me within a week. I had replaced the ram and repasted my CPU. They have me no hassle over the sticker being broken.

It's pretty much illegal everywhere to prevent customers to upgrade components inside of a PC system.

So I just received this notebook a week ago. Performance wise I love it! However, I am wondering if anyone else has issues with the right back fan making clicking noises when having the screen in different positions, or when shutting down. I'm just wondering if I need to return this laptop or if this is normal for the fan. I opened up the back panel and didn't see any obstructions.

EDIT - Youtube video showing the issue. I can push about an inch from the power plug and it goes away, sometimes for a while, sometimes for few seconds.

What you describe is not normal, but I don't really hear it in the video. Please contact your vendor for tech support/warranty service.

I am talking to Donald at HID evolution about buying a MSI GS73 Stealth 8RF-014 17.3 to use for photo/video editing. My Nikon shots 24 Meg and after 1500 photos loaded from a event and using Photoshop and Lightroom my old laptop is overwhelmed. Any thoughts? (And ya I am the FNG)

I recently purchased a refurbed GS73, which came with the 60hz 1080p IPS panel, which I immediately swapped out for what seemed like a legit AUO 4K panel I purchased from Newegg, but now I've got this really weird and annoying issue where any dark areas in any videos look blocky / artifacty and show really bad color banding. It basically makes watching video on this thing impossible. Another user mentioned a similar problem way back on page 36 and then again on page 39 where he said a service centre "flashed an eeprom" as the motherboard thought the laptop had the wrong panel, so I tried updating the bios with the bios from the 4K version off the MSI site, which did make the logo at boot nice and crisp, but unfortunately hasn't fixed my issue. So, any ideas on what I could try next? I really wanted the 4K panel for graphics work, and couldn't afford the 4K version, so please don't suggest I just buy the 4K version. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I was able to fix it myself in an incredibly dumb way. Even through I'd removed and reinstalled both the GTX 1060 and HD 630 drivers twice already, I used Display Driver Uninstaller to remove and reinstall both drivers again and the issue is completely fixed. To be honest this is my first Windows machine after almost a decade of being a Mac user, and while I did used to build my own PCs back in the day, this was such a classic reintroduction to the wonderful world of Windows. Buy a refurbished machine, DIY replace the panel, get weird drivers issues, reinstall a bunch of times, then *really* reinstall and it finally, gloriously works.

For some reason my SD card reader will not ...well read. I put in a sd card and nothing.
The weird thing is it also does not work in my other MSI laptop.

SteelSeries Rival 310 or Rival 600

You don't even need to install a driver for them since they share the same SteelSeries Engine that is used by your laptop's SteelSeries Keyboard [IMG]

See if Donald can source them for you to include it in the box

Any chance can provide a link to Newegg to the panel you purchased? Has it held up ok and how difficult was the installation?

    Hi,

I recently purchased a GS73VR 7RF. I have updated all the drivers that were not up to date in the device list.
I want to get the machine running well from the start so that I don't encounter problems straight away.

I am hoping some experienced owners can share their tips. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I will try to share any issues/fixes in the future.

Does anyone have any advice on the below:
    • What bloatware to remove
    • What anti-malware/spyware software to install/buy
    • How to get the best performance on the 256GB SSD drive and the 2TB HDD drive
    • How to read from SD cards and USB sticks faster (Would a fast card reader attached to the USB3.1 or thunderbolt port increase transfer speeds?).
    • Any other tips to optimise performance, display, battery calibration for example

    Thanks

Here's the one I bought. Or at least the same panel from maybe a different seller. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=15Z-00YG-000W4

Install was dead easy. Just removed the bezel by heating up the glue underneath it with a blow-dryer, took out like 4 screws to take the old panel out, screwed the new panel in and put the bezel back on after heating the glue up again.

Has been pretty solid so far. A bit disappointed with the quality of the panel I got as there's a decent amount of backlight bleed, but turning the brightness down a bit from max for movie watching etc, mostly fixes it. It looks great when editing native 4k content and while I'm far from a hardcore gamer, it looks pretty good to my eyes when playing games in 1080p as well.

hi everyone! i have a brutal problem and i did everything i could so this is my last hope!

i have recently bought a MSI GS73VR 7RG and there is a problem with my WiFi.

the problem simply is, when my WiFi signal is about 60%, only when i play a game, the WiFi automatically turns off and on repeatedly, or the download speed comes to about 1/10 times the normal speed.

in other conditions (full signal/not playing games and...) it works very fine and everything is normal.

i have downloaded latest killer drivers from their website.
my bios is up to date. (116)
my windows is up to date.
i downloaded all of my drivers from the msi website except the killer drivers.
i have tried deleting killer drivers and work with default microsoft drivers and still the problem exists.

i have contacted killer support and they sent me some instructions for resetting network ( some CMD commands) and still nothing. they said my bios is out of date, updated it, again nothing.

i'll be very happy if you could help me please.

one other thing. please check for me, does your bluetooth and wifi indicator LEDs stay on even when you turn BT or the wifi off? (the red LED lights in the right below panel)

    Just got my GS73 8RF :)

Hardware looks good but the fan turning on at idle/light load is starting to drive me nuts (after an hour).
Running on balanced profile, but something keeps waking the processor to 3.9GHz on all cores, drops to 800MHZ for ~ 10% of runtime despite light CPU usage. Running windows update at the moment, 8% CPU used, all cores locked at 3.9GHz :-(

Suspicious of a service / something consuming CPU that isn't reporting via task manager. Anyone know if a fresh install is likely to fix this?

Yes, experience is much improved with a fresh install.

The fan is still too eager to spin up though, think it's going to be a deal breaker, i need a laptop that can work reasonably quietly when doing light tasks. The high pitch of the fan makes it pretty annoying for me/anyone in the office/coffee shop.
Not sure if this is normal, or a broken fan, just sounds like it's too small and spinning too fast, but i don't fancy breaking the factory seal just to have a poke around if the unit is going to be returned.

Anyone had a similar problem / tried fixing the fan? I expect a re-paste will help keep the temp down / fan spinning less, but it's still going to be kicking in fairly regularly :-(

Other than that, nice bit of kit. 4k display is good, no bleed, no dead pixels. Config out the box was horrid, weird yellow tint to everything and i'm not keen on the matt coating (bit grainy up close) but the display itself seems fine, maybe lacking a bit of contrast / punch, but hard to say without doing a proper configure on it.
SSD is great, Samsung 2.5GB Sequential Read, 1.5GB Write

I am not sure if downloading the MSI afterburner program will help you control fan speeds in that particular model. But it may be worth a shot.

it seems that the latest intel driver fixes the optimus/win10 bug (1sec freeze when nvidia chip wake up, intel ver.:win64_24.20.100.6229.exe), finally.

edit: nop, they came back after 2 boots, they're shorter and less often. something changes anyway

    @hmscott

Excuse me hmscott, you have post some pics about overclock & undervolt on page 47, which shows your CPU-Multiplers enabled.
    I learned now, that the CPU 6700HQ or 7700HQ where locked by default and till now there's no way to modify the multiplers itself;
so how did you managed it to overlock them into XTU? Are your pics really from the device GS73, with the mentioned CPU?

The example XTU settings I posted were from a GT80 5950HQ, which had core multiplier unlocked.

After years of 4xxx / 5xxx series CPU's being multiplier unlocked it was a shocking disappointment for Intel to lock them down starting in the 6xxx / 7xxx series.

Some owners are reporting their 8850H (8750H?) have multiplier unlocked, with the HK models in the 6xxx / 7xxx / 8xxx being unlocked but still may be limited by the maker BIOS.

Yeah, I usually mention the CPU in my post if the image doesn't have the CPU model in the image, I'll add that to that post. It's a 5950HQ

HQ CPU's had adjustable core multipliers for a long time. Intel stopped allowing multiplier tuning in the base HQ CPU's with the 6th gen - when Intel introduced the HK overclockable CPU's.

More recently there have been reports of the 8850H (and 8750H) with tunable core multiplier's in some laptops - some BIOS's might limit this, so check with owners of the specific laptop if the CPU core multiplier is adjustable with XTU / TS / BIOS before buying.

Hey guys, someone have a working SteelSeries Engine and/or Keyboarddriver for this model (GS73VR 7RG)?
With the SteelSeries Engine 3 from the MSI Supportpage my keyboard will not detect. I do a cleaninstall of Windows v1809 and do not intend to to install the Dragoncenter, too.
But I would prefer to have customizeable keyboardlights, unfortunately so far I have no success!!!

    Thanks in advance

Just wanna let more people know, I'm maintaining a driver thread for GS73VR 6RF.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/msi-gs73vr-6rf-drivers.823085/
Most of the drivers can be used on the 7 and 8th gen except Wi-Fi, Bluetooth for 7, 8th gen and SD card reader for 8th gen.
All of the drivers come from either official website or Microsoft Update Catalog.
Sources are posted so you can check for updates yourself, too.

While reading the disassembly tutorial, I have a wild idea. Is it possible to upgrade the SD card reader and Ethernet board of the 6th gen to 7/8th gens'? The newer SD card reader is much faster than the old USB 2.0 reader.

Also I checked my battery wear with HWiNFO yesterday and it was 23.4%. I left the laptop running MSI battery calibration at night. When I woke up and checked again, the wear is now at 32.1%. Most of the time I just leave the charger on because the EC limited the battery to 94%. I bought the laptop about 2 years ago. Is the wear normal or not? I'm still in warranty and need to fix the broken hinge before warranty expired. Is it possible to let MSI replace the battery? Thanks in advance.

After 2 years the battery wear is only 32.1%...that is actually very good, and would definitely not qualify for warranty replacement.

Thanks for the answer. Could you please tell me how a battery calibration could increase the wear by 9%? Did I do something wrong with the battery calibration process or the wear was lower before because the battery was not calibrated?

I would contact either your vendor's tech support, or MSI tech support in your Region.

Battery life is typically 500 cycles, so after 2 years it should be deteriorating so doing batter calibration would show its true capacity level. Eventually it would need to be replaced.

After battery calibration you do see the real situation, without it the figure is merely a guess. I'll check my situation, after 5 years my GT70 shows 21.2% wear and I'll do a calibration tonight - waiting for a gravely worse figure. I'll com back then.

OK, done battery calibration after 2+ years. Wear went from 21.2 to 27.0% - not bad at all after 5 years 5 months old laptop.

That's cool and you guys know battery doesn't last forever thus why battery warranty is just 1-year for everything and not just computers, so just be ready to replace it when the time comes. :)

To reduce fan noise, I can advice you first of all make the undervolt, it works great. Than check in Dragon center what fans are active. By default in "browsing mode" I have only CPU fan active (Standart fan mode in DC). You can setup Custom fan mode (the bottom one) to make all fans stop, when laptop is idle or nearly idle. Honestly I can barely hear fan noise while common tasks. I had a problem after ~8 months of usage with CPU fan, but disassembling and regreasing helped a lot (just any kind of silicon grease). May be bring it to service to put new grease.
I believe you can control fans only with Dragon Center, I have tried another soft and didn't get it working at all. With afterburner you can control only the clock speed on this model (it has fan control. but it doen't worked for me). You can boost it under <200 Mhz without warnings for both core and memory. You can't change the voltage so I belive there is no risk, worst scenario is freez, but you'll get it with higher numberes

If you don't want the hassle because of too much work, you can add a notebook cooler underneath the system which helps to drive the airflow better, see below.

I don`t think it`s a good idea. When I`m not totally wrong, most of the air is sucked in from above... In addition, a part of the hot air is also ejected below. If you now use a bottomcooler this hot air will be pushed back into the device. I have made the experience, the most efficient solution are vacuumcoolers like "opolar lc06", which sucks the hot airflow out. The disadvantage is, it comes with their own noise level...

Air circulation will always bring some of the hot air back into the system even if you do undervolt. Efficient cooling does help to cool the system because fan is everything.
Air is typically sucked in from the bottom and hot air is exhausted from the back/side so the cooler will help to drive cool air into the system. Noise level can be adjusted through fan speed switch.
So if someone who does not want the trouble going through making changes in the system then this solution works.

I know what you mean, and typical you`re totaly right. What I want to say is only my own experience! But I think the GS73-System is not an normal device with its airflow. When we take a look to the cover, than we could see a lot of openings on the top cover (above the keyboard) and they are not there for the speakers. Cause when we open the device, the speakers are placed on opposite (left and right to the touchpad).

When I put a wet finger over these openings, I can feel that the air sucks in there, on the other hand, when I put a wet finger on the bottom openings, I can`t feel alot of air, which flows in.

I think, that has something to do with turned around mainboard in this device. The heatpipes placed directly under the top cover, after that, I mean below them, there is the mainboard. Umm complicate to explain, the whole system stand upside down. So I have the feeling a bottomcooler must lay on keyboardside to work like with every other device.
