Surprising to see you getting 70s in overwatch with stock paste. I got high 90s on p670hs and mid 80s on the gigantic gt72vr.

I'm looking to buy a 4K gs73vr. I've read through this thread and people seem happy with the 4K display on the gs73vr. The model appears to be the AUO109B, Name: AUO B173ZAN01.0, the same one as in the gt73vr. What I don't understand is why that same display performed terribly in this review:

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-GT73VR-6RF-Titan-Notebook-Review.181123.0.html

Terrible black level, contrast, and AdobeRGB color space.

But same screen, different laptops, better reviews:

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/Schenker-XMG-U727-Clevo-P870DM3-G-Notebook-Review.173957.0.html
    https://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Predator-17-G9-793-Notebook-Review.173668.0.html

Is it simply that the gt73vr review model was calibrated very badly?

Either he didn't check the model of the screen himself or something was very wrong with his panel. It's a full gamut panel, so his colorimeter should have shown aRGB levels somewhere around 100%. I wouldn't get too hung up about it. The one on my GS73vr is probably the best screen I've ever used.

I'm hoping the new models have G-Sync. MSI sometimes does not bother with the extra overhead/costs of licensing needed for such things, eg HDMI 2.0, but the laptop in fact has it.

I doubt they will. The GS series is aimed at consumers that want a work/gaming PC. If they enable gsync, the battery life will go from bad to abysmal. They could add a bigger battery I suppose, but I've yet to see msi do something like that.

If it's the same panel, yes. It's just a monitor profile so it won't break anything. It'll just look funny if the models are different. If course there are sought differences I'm even the same model panel, but they are usually monitor.

I had some stuttering and glitchey sound in YouTube and some games, but it all vanished when I updated the Wifi card. There was definitely some sort of conflict going on.

    Hi everyone!
    I am a new happy (for now) owner of a GS73VR-7RF :)

Right out of the box i experienced quite a lot of mouse stuttering and speaker cracking.

However, after updating everything (drivers, OS, basically everything I was prompted to update), things seem better! I did not have to remove any software.
The only times where the mouse stutters for a bit is when the UAC (user account control) pops up.

I'll post more updates in the coming days. For now I am giving a go with undervolting the cpu (with the Intel utility) by -0.125V, let's see if the fan noise becomes more reasonable during lightweight usage.

    So far so good, though!
It may have been that the stuttering/cracking was correlated with the USB boost from MSI Dragon (now is disabled) but I can't confirm it right now. With everything up to date there is no more sound cracking.

Just for the record this model has a 120Hz panel, a Toshiba SSD (seems to have slightly worse performance with respect to the Samsungs), and a Seagate HDD (2TB 5400 rpm)

Did you physically change the card out with an Intel one or just update the Killer drivers?

Also, I have read that the Killer software suite causes issues, but removing that will help tremendously.

I went overkill and just went Intel. I've always had bad luck with killer so my tolerance to debugging drivers with them is short.

I have a 6RF, so I don't know if this advice will apply to Kabylake, but MSI Silent Option gives you the ability to manually adjust fan noise outside of the dragon center (which I got rid of completely)
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=255972.0

I run with a -0.125V undervolt and it did reduce temps by a bit, lessening normal fan noise I imagine.

Hi everyone, I just got my gs73vr 4k. One issue I'm having is the matte coating on the 4k ips display seems too thick, I can literally see glitters of red/blue/green when the screen is displaying white or other light colors. Is anybody else experiencing this? If I can somehow solve this issue this would be the perfect laptop IMO.

Have you tried adjusting brightness and contrast to your liking?
This is a personal preference issue so you may have to either adapt to it, or swap to a different model that uses a different type of panel.

Maybe they should have gone MaxQ on that CPU. Those CPU temps on a simple firestrike run are horrendous.

Remember, these laptops are just pulled out of the box, with no undervolt on the CPU, which can drop the temps at load a lot :)

The GS63VR, the smaller chassis 15" 1070 Max-Q test is in now for comparison, the Fire Strike scores were very close to the same, temps via FLIR looked higher and the fan noise was up a good +6dba over the GS73 as well - it looks like for both the fan noise leaps over 39dBa when it needs more cooling under sustained load.

True enough on the undervolt. I figure around up to -10C with a proper undervolt, and I think he was also running stock fan profile. I wonder how much these temps could be improved with a proper undervolt and fans running full tilt. Also curious about overclocking headroom on the 1070.

I guess my point was that with the price they are charging for these laptops they can't even take the time to properly turn the voltage on the CPU still. They are sending them out of the factory with crazy high voltages. Even the worst 7th gen HQ CPU can easily do -100mV which would at least be a good starting point. Maybe even create a profile plan in the gaming app that allows the user to select with a warning about possible system stability.

I tried adjusting brightness/contrast but it doesn't seem to help. :/ I might try taking out the display and try removing the matte cover on it and see if it makes a difference.

Yup, I've been saying that for years, a simple testbed to validate functional aspects with tuning for CPU undervolt - *and* CPU OC, GPU OC, screen calibration, it could be done easily - and at the same time catch 90% of the faults people RMA for - temperature, light-bleed, GPU flakiness.

There are so many tools I've used over the years on components and custom rigs for production testing and validation on critical equipment - I don't see how quantities of scale would get in the way of doing the same for consumer equipment, in fact it should speed things up considerably.

Not to mention this should / could be automated.

It's a final test and tuning that would make the suffering and anxiety for customers, sellers, and the people and companies that make the laptops - and pay for RMA's - a thing of the past.

    Hello everyone.
I am seriously considering buying an MSI Laptop ; either the GS63 or GS73 (both don't look too big to me but I'll still have to try and handle them before deciding which one to go with).

However there are a number of common problems that really turn me off, and they appear on both models :
-Apparently these laptops get really hot during gaming sessions ; and the keyboard especialy takes a lot of heat
-The secondary hard drive is really really slow ; way slower than it should be even for a 5400rpm drive. And I heard the SSD also tends to underperform.
-Battery life when not plugged is terribad, even for basic tasks like Office and web browsing. When not gaming I will usualy be using it for programming or class, and I would like not having to plug it all the time (that takes away the point of choosing a laptop over a desktop).

My main question here is :
-do these problems still exist or have they been fixed by bios updates or whatever ?
-if not, is there a way to manualy fix at least the storage drives speeds ? Lots of thin laptops get hot so I would run into this problem with most brands, but the HDD and SSD speed problems really bother me.

I am french and there are currently some important sales on some of our models. And I really like the very thin aspect of these laptops ; otherwise I would have gone for a G502VS from Asus, but the 3cm thickness is too much I think. I do not have previous experiences with laptops but I need to be able to transport it, so the GS series from MSI seemed like the best deal. And a 15.6" really is a minimum for me, which removes the option of Razer Blades laptops (I dont see myself work or play on such small screens).

So I took the plunge, and my 6rf-067UK arrived on thursday.

Unlike the 7 rf UK, it appears as if the 6 ships with a 5400rpm secondary hdd. While I know these drives are slow, mine appears to be broken. I benchmarked it at about 28mbps write speed, slower than my internet!

I'll post screenshots later, but in the meantime I was wondering if someone who had the stock drive could run a speed test for comparison?

I don't own one but this is the problem I see almost all the time on forums : HDDs are so slow the only reason is that they're broken. Because even 5400rpm doesnt mean such low speeds.

However since it seems appears on most units (to not say "all" units), it is most likely a driver issue or a conception error on MSI's side rather than broken hardware.

    CrystalDiskMark 5.2.1.

It looks like I may have resolved this issue. This thread https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=276130.0 suggests removing Norton might fix it, which I've now done (it was always on the list of stuff to loose). I've also updated the chipset driver, wlan driver and NVidia drivers.

CDM now reports read and write speeds of ~125MB/s.

Could it be that your Nvidia card isn't being utilised, so the temp is N/A!? If the power light by the 'on' button is red, then the Intel GPU is being used. If its orange then the Nvidia GPU is in use. I could be wrong, but I believe the GPU temp refers to the Nvidia card. There's an option which allows you to decide which GPU should be used for different applications. Set it so that the Nvidia card is used for more applications or maybe play a game (not sure if you've tried yet), and then check the temp.

    Hi to All.

    I've got a new GS73VR 7RF, and love it!

I found just an issue with it, I'm trying to get power to charge my phone when the laptop is off as I used to do with my GS70 2PE, but can't get to do it. Tried removing the tick for the power saver in the USB controllers under device manager, and looked for the option in the BIOS, but coudn't find any.

    Any suggestion on this topic?

    Thanks!

Sorry, that's all the manual had on that page, you might try downloading the manual and reading it from cover to cover, there might be something there.

I assume you already went into the BIOS and dug into every page, and into every sub page?

It's listed in the manual, so it's in there somewhere...

Check your Programs installs from MSI, there might be a Windows based tool to toggle it on and off.

Worst comes to worst, you can register your laptop - you should have already done that, early registration (in the first 3 days, 14 days?) gives you a free 3 month extension on your warranty. Then after registering, click on the Support button and open a ticket and ask your questions directly to MSI, they gotta know ;)

Yes, as you said I dug in every single corner of the laptop, Dragon Gaming Center, installed Super Charger which doesn't appear in my downloads page so brought it from my old GS70, surfed the BIOS, the TB app and all with no results... It doesn't mean it is not there, I may need glasses! XD

Already registered it, and will follow your advice, but here in Spain the support is not really fast and trustworthy. Last time I sent a ticket took them like 6 weeks to answer, and with a ver poor results...

Anyway will try it and will post here if find the solution.

    Thank you!!!

Yeah, it's there in the USB 3.1 connector, did you already have a cable to try that? Is it an adapter USB 3.1 to USB 3.0 for your phone? It does say "Optional", but I think they are referring to Thunderbolt speed support, I would imagine the power / charging would be functional either way.

I wouldn't let 6 weeks go by, keep sending update requests against the ticket every few days, and close it at 1 week. Open a new ticket referencing the one you closed, with the same request. Keep repeating till you get an answer.

Hopefully someone here will respond if they find out one way or the other how it works :)

Ok, I got some news and they are not good ones...

MSI support answered my ticket, they say the i-charge feature has been removed from newest BIOS. They say they will transfer my suggestion to bring it back to the R&D department, but I don't think we will see any changes soon...

So I went to MSI forums, custom BIOS subforum and got in touch with a very nice guy who uses to make BIOS mods for MSI owners. He analyzed the BIOS and EC files, and came back to me saying that is not possible to enable that option... because it is not there anymore.

So for now, no power share on any of the USB or TB ports when the laptop is off.

hmscott thanks a lot for your help!

    Hi Everyone!

I'm new to this forum and just ordered GS73VR.

I'm from Pakistan and there's no authorized dealer of MSI here, so I ordered from an online store which is importing the laptop from USA.

How can I check if it is not refurbished and I got a new laptop?
Laptop is on its way, and I haven't received it yet.

    Thanks in advance!
