Can anyone with a 1070 please run Firestrike benchmark (or any benchmark for that matter) on "auto" fan profile and post a HWinfo screenshot? Looking for CPU/GPU temps and frequency. Single CPU core is fine. Thanks in advance. Really looking to resolve this thermal issue I'm having.

I am very happy with my GS65.

I have the 037 model from Best Buy. I bought it last Sunday and have been debating all week whether i should open it and install a 500 nvme and upgrade to 32gigs of ram i had from my alienware 15r3. I was nervous from years ago when i busted a ribbon cable in an old laptop. Tonight i decided to do it after watching a tear down video on youtube and glad i did. Took about 30 minutes but no issues. The biggest pain I had was getting the 2 wires back on the wifi card. But everything is back together and working perfect.

I have been using the system all week and no complaints. I have the cpu undervolted -130 and it has stopped the fans from kicking up during basic productivity tasks.CPU temps with basic tasks have been 35-45. I havent been monitoring temps when gaming but all the games I play at ultra have been running great mainly testing FF14, Overwatch, Vermintide 2, Divinity 2 and Pillars of Eternity 2.

I decided to switch to this from my previous alienware as i already have a gtx 1080 desktop and wanted something much easier to travel with during my business trips. The alienware was nice but just too heavy for me for business travel. I also like how the design is classy as I will also be using this as a work computer and it wont stick out in meetings.

I have had no issues with flexing obviously not built like a tank like the alienwares but I dont have any creaking sounds or feel any give when I am typing. I think the screen is great and i love the thin bezels really nice to have a 15 inch screen in this footprint.

I will update if I end up having some issues but so far this laptop is everything i was hoping for and hope to keep it for a few years as my main travel machine.

    Hi all,

New GS65 owner here. I must be missing something re: True Color. When I right-click the system tray icon and select a color profile it doesn’t change. Same thing if I open the app itself. It’s stuck on sRGB. Uninstall and reinstall did not help. Is there some trick to make it work correctly? This is v2012

    Thanks,
    Mario

I think you change the setting in dragon center. Turning it off keeps it the same as default. You can change the profile from default though

I’ve just found this ideal laptop and I just want to explain how I came to find it in the last 15 minutes.
I’m coming from an aw13 oled (form factor was important). That was number 1 laptop ever. I wanted to get a 1070 gtx but the only size was 15” with a keyboard WITHOUT a numpad was the aw15. As big aw15 sounded on paper. It was pretty big. Largest laptop I’ve ever owned. I placed my aw13 on top of it while it was open and it could fit within its parameters.
Went to check if it was worth getting the 1080mq version looking on notebookcheck, side tracked to see what’s new. I don’t look at msi unless it’s 14” because of the numpad. But decided to just look out at this 15” to my surprise it has no numpad. Now I’m instantly interested. Like REALLY.
Question is will they have a cheaper spec? I’m not paying £2399 on a laptop (potentially my new number 1) even if it’s the worlds first 144hz screen I’ve never experienced and it’s not even oled. It has 32gb ram which I don’t even know it’s speed and 512gb nvme which I don’t need because I have 1tb already, and a 1070mq that’ll be replaced in 6 months.
As interested as I am in this perfectly sized laptop. I’ll wait for next gen gpu. If they can’t get this well under £2000 in a lower spec then I’m out, but I’ll follow this thread till I can get one used.

Nope. Not working at all. If I select any other profile in Dragon Center it just reverts back to sRGB. Is it possible the April ‘18 Windows Update broke it?

Hi, is anyone else having a problem getting Games to run at 144Hz?

I was playing with CRU and have been able to 'convince' games that the display is 144Hz - and then games (Overwatch) report 144FPS - but it "looks like" 60Hz.

Max CPU was 89 C, Max GPU was 72 C, CPU throttled (no undervolting) - this is with the HIDEvolution Conductonaut re-paste and Fujipoly pads and "Auto" fan profile.

I'm using the stock NVIDIA drivers (397.31) - is it "safe" to update to the latest driver direct from NVIDIA? I had heard that this laptop and the Aero has problems with the NVIDIA ones and that we should only use MSI ones for a bit...

A few more tests for good measure (all same config as above):

Fixed this by uninstalling Windows v1803 (back to factory 16299) - will wait some weeks before updating.

Fingerprint drivers are missing actual setup files. Can't even install from the INF using generic install methods. They will need to update the drivers they have on the page with a proper installer

Yes the GS65 has a fingerprint reader in the power button but it wasn’t enabled on launch. They finally released a “driver” but it has no installation files

Here is how undervolting increases performance: at -0.150v the CPU holds at 3.9 for a minute then drops to 3.6GHz. At stock, the CPU plateaus at 3.1GHz. So, dragging two sliders in ThrottleStop adds +20% or more performance.

Thanks for that illustrative example of how undervolt not only cools the thermals down at 100% load, it also provides additional performance. :)

IDK how this thread and others got on the kick of SELLING => modded BIOS, Liquid Metal re-paste, and blowing holes in the bottom of a perfectly good laptop, when undervolting and stock paste works fine, and has worked fine for a long long time.

Let's try to get back to sanity and work with what MSI provides without redoing their work for profit. o_O

And, @Phoenix et all, please stop using the forums to sell HID services.

Yes it does, as undervolting stops thermal throttling, which keeps the CPU in a position to hold higher clock rates.

It's a simple solution that works across all laptops. :)

Using ThrottleStop or XTU has worked for ten's of thousands, probably hundreds of thousands of laptops over many years.

It's easy to find the stable 100% load and Idle undervolt with safe user mode software, and for 99% of laptops it takes the edge off, reducing 100% load temps by 10c.

No need to pull apart a perfectly good laptop and ruin it on your first day out of the box. Wait until your warranty expires before hacking hardware.

And, don't get sucked into wasting money customizing laptops that work find out of the box with an undervolt. :D

Totally agree with the above statement - I'm not convinced repasting this laptop is as useful as on other machines. I ordered this laptop with LM preemptively because of all the throttling talk. I should have known better because unfortunately for me the LM paste job hardly did a thing. I was still throttling and my numbers are only a degree or two better than stock results on some reviews.

I'll be including all this in my review, but from what I've seen so far, there are a couple things contributing to the overheating. First is the uneven coverage. YMMV with this and I just got unlucky, but if you go to repaste with this issue, you might risk things getting worse. The heatsink is just plain poorly designed. There are only 3 mounting points for each heatsink, with one being shared between the two. On top of that the CPU heatsink screws are not evenly separated, so the upper left corner of the CPU gets far less pressure(and if bent, receives no coverage). There's also a couple thermal pads there on a step right around the top screw, a spot where if the thermal pad is too thick, the entire top of the CPU heatsink won't make contact. This is where the "stamp" heatsinks actually have an advantage, because they are so thick, that you couldn't possibly not have coverage.

The other thing I'm seeing is the heatsinks are awfully small and barely have any dissipation. The GPU is barely adequate but the CPU one is just plain too small. So small, that you can only fit two heatpipes on it.

The Auto fan profile in Dragon Center is also a problem, which I'm assuming stems from Max-Q specifications. I think it's a 40dB limit, so in order to keep the noise at a minimum, the CPU fan needs to be under 75%. Low airflow on a small heatsink isn't going to help.

I haven't properly tuned it yet, but I was able to apply a 150mV undervolt right off the bat to help most of the problem. The other half was solved by fixing the fan profile. All I did was shift it to Advanced and allowed the CPU fan to reach 100% at the hotter temps. No more throttling after that.

I'm considering removing the LM and switching to Kryonaut to see if my uneven surface theory is true. Will keep everyone posted.

Guys stay focused on GS 65 please.
The news that the CPU fan is not working @ 100% in auto mode and that putting it to max speed with proper undervolt avoids throttling is a GREAT news for me :D
I will not use LM paste in this notebook because I'm going to carry it around many times everyday, so the probability that it would leak and mess up the mainboard would be high IMHO.

    Thank you!!

Hello fellow GS65 owners, I have joined the squad today in purchasing a GS65. :D Right off the bat, I'd love to know if anyone has a fix for the adaptive brightness! Not the one in power management, the hidden demon like Dell's Dynamic Backlight Control (DBC). Totally driving me nuts and it's only been a couple hours

Did anyone else already confirm this? If not, I can confirm: I am able to use G-sync on the Mini-Displayport output (at 2560x1440 144Hz) without an issue.

Before I go buying wires, has anyone tried driving a G-sync display through the thunderbolt port? I'm hoping to drop from 3-plugs-each-sitdown to 2-plugs... because... lazy.

So, in Intel XTU this is going and changing Advanced Tuning > Core Voltage Offset to "-0.150V" (default is "-0.100V")? Just double checking...

In case anyone is interested, I fixed my True Color issue with a factory reset. I suspect installation of the most recent Intel UHD 630 drivers may have been the culprit. Haven't installed them since the reset and all is good.

On a totally unrelated note, I found today a new issue which I do not understand. If I place my iPhone 8 Plus on the touchpad the system goes to sleep. This is totally reproducible. Any ideas at all what could cause this?

Magnet in the iPhone is hitting the hall switch. Every laptop has them in different spots and you just found yours.

Tablets have very similar behavior, which is how smart covers work.

You could also try unpacking the zip file and using the ICC profile file for your display direct install into the system color management, instead of using the pre-digested filters in TrueColor, that works best for me.
It could be tripping a (magnetic) sensor that makes the laptop think the cover is closed.

Hm. Mine is -0.100 in XTU by default. Weird. Thanks for the reply and the info.

He attacked hmscott for this post calling out hmscott for working for some company, yet Phoenix never denied that he works for or is somehow compensated for his HIDEvolution shilling. It’s all kind of slimy but hey - HIDEvolution is a pretty good seller so I guess we should all just look away from Phoenix and only look at the dastardly hmscott. Heh.

Hi @Donald@HIDevolution can you comment on this specifically? I ordered LM and am happy with that decision, undervolting on top of that will be my choice...

But the comment if carrying the notebook (sideways) leading to LM leakage should be discussed. I'll be traveling with mine very frequently, during which times it will be everything from inverted to sideways. I trust there is zero concern when LM is applied correctly, like by an authorized reseller. Could you please comment?

@Phoenix does not work for them and is not compensated by them. It is only because they are amazing, go above and beyond, and deliver superior products that he, I and many others support them as advocates. Having happy customers and word of mouth endorsement is always the best form of advertisement any company could hope for. It is extremely rare to find a high performance notebook vendor that takes the care they do, or that are willing to break the rules of conventional "wisdom" (yes, the quotes are on purpose) to make the stuff they sell better. @Donald@HIDevolution works there, and his account is noted as Company Representative. The rest of us are merely super happy customers that don't want to buy broken garbage and want to see others spared the heartache of buying broken garbage. What I mean by that is broken garbage that "works as intended" by the imbeciles that designed and manufacture mainstream trashbooks.

Thanks for the responses. Never would have thought of it tripping the lid magnet. Makes sense though. I may change the lid close action to nothing or maybe just turn the screen off not sleep

There's no way to guarantee it won't leak. That's why you take the precaution of taping all around it in case it does. And if it leaks onto the tape, all it takes is a hard bump to dislodge it and the bead is free. Yes it's unlikely, but nobody is going to tell you it's impossible, even if properly done.

That said, resellers warranty their work. If it leaks, they get to fix it (assuming you didn't directly cause the problem but opening it yourself).

Ask me about working on tons of laptops and iPads that we stack on top of eachother, and forgetting that's a thing. Never fails, hit that issue every 6 months and feel like a dummy when I figure it out all over again.

Regarding your concerns about the safety of liquid metal thermal interface material, yes applying anything metal conductive to a piece of electronic equipment has its risks, but we have a proprietary means of application to prevent leakage. Also, you can rest assured that any upgrades that we perform will be covered under warranty. Regarding its long term effects, we have been offering liquid metal thermal compound for about two years with no ill effects or reports of issues from users. On the contrary, we found liquid metal thermal material to be more effective than traditional thermal interface material over the long term.

Nice - did the -0.150 CPU and cache voltage offset in Intel XTU and shaved about 4 degrees off my results and no throttling. Overall Firestrike score went down which is strange, but my NVIDIA driver is now the latest so maybe that has more to do with it.

    Before offset (just LM):
    13,235 Firestrike - https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/26587796

After offset (-0.150 CPU and cache voltage in Intel XTU):

I understand your concern, but as someone that has never purchased an expensive laptop like this before, I appreciate this forum even making me aware of companies like HIDe and GenTech as purchasing options that are alternatives to BBY and Amazon, two mega-companies which I may or may not care to buy from due to whatever reasons. Knowing options is great.

It is not as if they are taking profits from MSI.

If Donald wants to participate here then great! He even personally called me one day to discuss questions I had... so if being here is good for the business and good for me... no problem. Other corporate representatives - including BBY for that matter - are welcome to be here too. This community appears to have enough experts, enthusiasts, and average joes to keep things in check.

And I’m pretty grateful for what Phoenix does at no cost, no matter his reasons. If someone wants to post a video showing me how do all their recommended tweaks... maybe I’ll look into doing it on my own?

Lastly, as far as the thermal re-paste and LM discussion... that shouldn’t be “banned” or seen as unsavory. I want to see people discuss the stock pads, the undervolting, the repasting, and all the thermal management issues and strategies - including those that say LM was a waste and their GS65 is still throttling. Very informative.

Let the thread organically go where it needs to go.

    Hi All,

Just to give you my personal feedback.
I went to BestBuy yesterday, to check the GS65.

    - First impression: really good, really nice...

    - Deeper checking, to confirm some comments...

    a. Yes the case is little too flexible... Don't try to carry it with one hand.
In a long term, right and left bottom looks too much flexible and will give to much pressure inside between the battery and the motherboard... It must be carry with two hands.
Otherwise the case is strong enough for me.

    b. Nice screen, missing just a little bit of brightness...
But who use it at max?
But it can be an issue when using it outside on a sunny day...

    c. My biggest disappointment... The sound, the quality is really low...
Yes I want to be able to listen a YouTube video or a music without headset!
    I'm coming from a MacBookPro 2011...
I know Mac are really good for the sound but we are speaking of a $2000 laptop.
I can accept a little bit less but not so bad...
There was on a side an Asus ROG GU501GM ($1500), and the sound was far better and acceptable!

    d. Who had this stupid idea to put to 2 keys "|\" on the keyboard !!!??? (qwerty keyboard).

    e. Touchpad was working "good" for a PC... Still far away from the Mac experience...
Please manufacturers, when you will decide to stop using PS2 port for the touchpad and give to users a real good touchpad experience as Mac? Is it so difficult to integrate an USB touchpad?

    My 2 cents.

I’m glad you posted your BBY experience. I also checked out the laptop at BBY and also am coming from a Mac.

I had complete forgotten about the sound issue until you said something. I also thought it was surpsingly low. But I also had a hard time finding good test of its audio using the files/programs that were on the floor model. I actually felt really limited in my ability to assess much of anything with the floor model, besides physical attributes.

The touchpad on the model I played with seemed to require a lot of pressure to left-click. To the extent that I could see it fatiguing my muscles a bit. It was odd. I was thinking maybe it was just that model. Anyone else observe this?

    - For the sound, you just have to play the 3 default mp3 files which are inside the music folder, inside the explorer.
The sound is not only low, but really bad, missing bass and everything... And the speaker are in the bottom of the case, which is not helping...
    - For the touchpad, just try to scroll a page inside Internet Explorer... You will cry like with every PC... I can't understand this... For the click, I'm not using the real click but the "soft or touch" click, which is easier and work usually fine...

I am also curious. I previously owned the GS60 and the force required to press the touchpad was way too high. Can someone offer some comparisons to the 2 machines?

Has anyone ever had a great PC touchpad or great laptop speakers? I don't get it. This is why I use headphones and a mouse.

I can absolutely affirm that neither Phoenix, nor any of the numerous other HIDevolution customers that post on the Forum, are in any way compensated by HIDevolution, other than they get the same customer service we give all of our customers. There are over 500 HIDevolution customers that are Notebookreview Forum Members. They should not be asked to suppress their right to free speech. Any reader can make their own conclusion about credibility.

While I agree that some of them can be a bit caustic at times (as can others), but I would think they have every right to post their opinions about technology, helpful "how to's" AND HIDevolution or any other reseller. Isn't that a significant part of what Notebookreview is all about? It is a great community where people can share technical knowledge, technical opinion, and both knowledge and opinion regarding resellers, be it either good, or not so good.

This post by sk3tch is false ('shilling'...'slimy'), misleading ( @hmscott attacked @Phoenix first), and beyond insulting, not only to HIDevolution, but also to over 500 of our customers who are Notebookreview Members, and to this community at large.

Let's leave this kind of posting on the cutting room floor.

My Razer Blade Stealth has an amazing touchpad. Very very close to apple laptop quality. My MSI GT70-0NE has great sound for a laptop.

My patience is starting to get to me. I ordered my GS65 from excaliberpc.com , because like a dummy I didn't look at this thread before the purchase to see all the happy HIDEvolution customers, and am going on 11 days since order (it was in stock) and still hasn't shipped.
