I'm trying to setup two identical SSDs in RAID for a non-068 model (037). The BIOS does not have such option (Advanced/SATA Selection). Has any GS65 owner tried to setup RAID or has checked their BIOS for such option?

You probably have to set it up via software like with the Triton 700. Open IRST and see if there's an option. Yes you have to install Windows on one ssd first before you can start.

Other option is to have your bios unlocked.

Hummm I am strongly deluded by the screen quality. I have an Asus N56VZ bought 6 years ago and I like it for the impressive screen ( https://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asus-N56VZ-S4044V-Notebook.78305.0.html). Talking about luminosity the MSI GS65 is definitely worse than my "old" Asus :(

I think that for that price, 300 cd/m2 would be the minimum value and GS65 is on 250-270 range. Really ?

I’m thinking screen brightness is subjective to the users preference. My MacBook Pro has a max 300 cd/m2 screen and I rarely feel the need to use it at full brightness. My main concern with this laptop is the amount of chassis flex but I’m fairly gentle with my gear so hoping it won’t be an issue.

I would not have Best Buy techs upgrade the GS65. If they said that they don't touch motherboards than they won't, and they're right in being confused because it's pretty uncommon (AFIAK) to have an "upside down" configuration like this. Maybe it helps with heat or airflow because it sure is a PITA to deal with.

I was a Best Buy tech in the 90s and the quality of the tech varies quite a lot. It's true that it's not brain surgery but if you're not accustomed to dealing with lots of tiny laptop cables then it'd be easy to mess this one up, and BBY is probably thinking of laptops like the Aero 15 where you just remove some screws, pop the bottom off, and put something in a slot. Anybody can do that...but for this one I'd either invest in a precision toolkit or have HID do it!

I agree. I definitely don't blame BB techs. Simply, the difference between the knowledge with the product makes me lean heavily towards going the re-seller route. Oddly enough, I finally got my hands on a floor model yesterday at BestBuy. I couldn't really do much with it, but I did find there to be a fair amount of flex all around. Thumbprint magnet. There was no creaking with my palms simply resting on it... only if I pressed down and actually applied pressure on the area to the left of the touch pad. In contrast to what I was told on the phone, the GeekSquad guy that was there last night said taking out the motherboard to upgrade it would not be a problem.

The only thing I've used in the last few years is a MacBook Pro and a HP ProBook provided by my employer. I guess the solidness of them has given me an skewed view of how much flex the average laptop has, because many consumer reviews say that the flex is present, but not as big of a deal as they were worried it would be. Reviews have also led me to believe that getting use to the brightness vs a MBP would be an adjustment.

Getting my GS65 today from GenTechPC! Can't wait for it to show up. I'll come back to tell you guys what I think. I've been following the thread, but haven't heard of anyone else getting the GenTechPC model. Anyone else out there rocking one from GenTechPC?

I am having a hard time understanding why anyone would want this screen to be brighter. It's hard for me to look at it in full brightness while outside. I always have to bring it down halfway most of the time.

It's probably not worth it. I calibrated mine and it barely changed the colors. It was pretty color accurate out of the box. Unless you are a professional it's a waste.

On other taptops it's a good idea but on the MSI taptops I find it better to use the MSI True Color utility that allows you to switch between different color profiles that are made for your screen like sRGB, Gaming, Designer (easier on the eye as it's darker), anti-blue, etc.

Hi!! I’m going to buy this laptop once is available in my country and I have a doubt, have someone tried to undervolt CPU and GPU to reduce the temps?

    Thanks!

Yes, I have undervolt the CPU by 0.150 using Intel XTU to keep CPU's temp reasonable. Have not tried on GPU, but I prefer just do liquid thermal pasting to knock off 20-25C.

    Thanks!

To undervolt it on XTU I have to set -0.150 on the Core Voltage Offset right?

Have your tweak turbo or something else?

    Have anyone tried ThrottleStop?

I’m considering it because I can undervolt both CPU and GPU without more complications, what do you think?

I have found that a $20 fan pad keeps it at a cool 75 degrees Celsius during heavy gaming. That's if anyone is looking for a cheaper option.

I had a chance to check my friends MSi GS65 recently and I was not really happy with how it creaked when lifted using one hand from the front and sides, also how flimsy it overall felt. Also, it was really hot at the bottom (like cannot hold it there for more than a few seconds before putting it down) considering it costs like 2500$ for the 1070 Max-Q version I'm having second thoughts.

Might just get an MSi GE73 8RF RGB-012 or ASUS ROG STRIX GL703GS-DH74 SCAR EDITION. Get better specs, and cooling and is a lot cheaper. Just have to deal with the weight and battery life. I dunno I'm back to square one on my decision on what to buy SMH.

Hello all! I'm new to these forums and wanted to say thank you for all the great questions and information on this laptop. For the GTX 1060 version via HIDevolution, it looks like the default configuration comes with 2x8GB for the system memory, while most of the reviews complain that the default configuration from MSI comes with 1x16GB. Is this a customization that HIDevolution makes or did the reviewers get a different version of the laptop?

Oh s****, if this is for every laptop with the 1060 I would change my mind and go for this one! For me it’s more importante a DC than a better graphic card and I’m unable to update the ram so it will be great!

That's odd. All the configurations on the MSI website have dual channel RAM, no matter the GPU: https://us.msi.com/Laptop/GS65-Stealth-Thin-Intel-8th-Gen/Specification

Even the BBY model is DC according to people getting their hands on one.

Got it from Gentech. It's advertised in their site so I wasn't surprised. Didn't bother me since I knew I was swapping ram with my older laptop.

MSI always has errors on their specs. Always...

Thanks very much for your reply, Donald. I just noticed today that HIDevolution is now offering the new Samsung 970 EVO, which is awesome. Just one more question - the second NVMe slot is on the side of the motherboard facing the bottom of the laptop, right? I just don't trust myself to remove and replace the motherboard to upgrade the memory and first NVMe slot and am glad the HIDevolution and other sellers will do that. However, it should be very straightforward to install something in the second slot, right?

Has anyone else tested any long gaming sessions? If so, are you getting any GPU throttling? I'm pegging 91c and getting pushed down to 850mhz after just only 10 minutes of use on ff15. Setting the fans to cooler boost helps but it just seems excessively hot to me, even with stock fan profiles.

based on the teardown video, it looks like both NVMe slots are on the same side of ram, so facing away from the bottom towards the keyboard. So, taking out the motherboard would be required

I had to tune my GS65(1070 Max-Q/32GB DDR4-2400) like this:

    1&2 cores 41x / 3&4 cores 38x / 5&6 cores 34x
    CPU core -0.250
    GPU core -0.125
    CPU cache -0.125
    64 SST
    CPU 31 GPU 0
    Speedshift on, 11-41
    TDP control off, 0

    CPU fan 0% 0% 70% 100% 100%
    GPU fan 0% 0% 70% 95% 95%
    Game at 72 fps (FFXIV)
    Max detail

To keep it under 76C for CPU(Usage 50% Max) and 85C for GPU(Usage 76-91% Stock clock)

    Using throttleStop's 12 thread 1024mb burn max at 86C.

It's little louder than my P150EM(Auto mode at 89C) at max fan speed(RPM3700, XMG EC) but it's in high pitch.

Re-paste is definitely required but the warranty seal is on one of the screw on the back...

Well I live in Taiwan, this machine was bought from Taiwan too, I've asked MSI Taiwan, and they told me using my own paste will have an effect to my warranty, this is very bad. I've asked if they could do it for me, they said they don't provide services such as re-paste to user's own paste.

I would go for 256GB or better 512GB and be done. I have a 2TB USB 3.0 external drive that I carry my Steam folder of games (~900GB) from my desktop on trips so I can just copy them over (and delete on local SSD to make room) if I need anything.

With that said, finally was able to open up my GS65 (8RF-053) from HIDEvolution - everything is fantastic so far. Still getting everything installed.

What do you guys use to stress the CPU/GPU for temps? I was thinking Intel XTU for CPU and regular gaming for GPU...did a little AIDA64 Extreme but it's not tough enough the temps weren't that high CPU-wise (high 60s).
