The GS65 is better and worth the premium as it has better cooling and a better keyboard.

About waiting, anything can happen, do you wanna wait forever or do you wanna enjoy today's tech NOW? I never wait, I buy what's best at the time and be done with it. Life is too short to be waiting.... just my 2 cents... wait all you wish...

So true man, I was also thinking since the performance of gtx 10 series and rtx 20 series aren't that big either.
I was also considering the GE75 since the price is almost the same, but its so huge and bulky. Ah man, GS65 for the premium looks!

    1) As we are seeing from the reviews, the GTX 2XXX with its ray tracing enabled takes a big hit on performance so you won't be able to enjoy 120+ FPS to make use of that high refresh rate of your screen AND you will enjoy the little graphical glory for a while but then what? you wanna play! not stare at scenes right?

the GTX 1070 or 1080 can pay any of today's games at max settings with ease and for at least the next 2 years

    2) I have the GT75 and man is it bulky. Like the other day I wanted to take it to my friend's house and it's so darn big and carrying two power adapters is a big pain in the butt. If I were to buy a laptop now, I would want something that packs good performance yet is still portable to be called a laptop not a gigantic desktop replacement. I guess the older I get the more different I see things. I want practicality and portability at the same time. Now I can't speak for you or anyone else but that's something to consider. GS65 or P65 White Creators Edition Sexiness FTW!

Anyone know if the P65 and GS65 have interchangeable casing? I like the look of the P65 and need to replaced a damaged GS65 casing. At the very least, this part.

I agreed with you, I used to buy desktop replacement, but now I just want something that's portable and still can play at night on a business trip, that's where the GS65 comes in handy. :D

It looks like the track pad will be a pain in the ass to swap...

I recently visited a MSI service center to get my laptop repasted.

I cannot do it by myself or get it done from third-party because removing the factory seal voids warranty in India. I cannot even upgrade my ssd or ram without voiding the warranty.
Anyway, I am not that experienced to deal with upside down motherboard. They were kind enough to help me.

I gave them self purchased Noctua NT-H1 and they repasted it for me. I had to wait for sometime and they did it for me. There was not much difference in temperature after the repaste.

The only upside was I have not noticed any creaking sounds which I used to hear after getting it back from them. So, something they did after opening and closing that seemed to have resolved it.
Also, I had not mentioned to them anything about the creaking sound. Maybe the bottom panel was just not set properly at first and now it is.

Also, does having a 230W charger help with performance compared to the 180W?

    MSI's GS65 literature frequently (always?) omits the Max-Q tag and that's a copy-pasta.
So yeah, that's the Max-Q version unless XoticPC specify otherwise.

@ Yu Juin Kuan - ratinox states it correctly. The GS65 does not come with the full nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070, it only comes with the Max-Q.

My bad, I was searching gs65 on their website and all the other models has maxq written there except for this one.
They probably missed the *maxq* when copy and pasting it.

    Hello

Just a quick review after 1 day with me MSI gs65 1070 maxq and 32 GB ram with 512 GB SSD nvme.

I got my from HIDevolution with thermal upgrade. I swapped it from Aero 15x what had sound issue and endless software problems.

[email protected] done fantastic job with my demands and issues and I received premium customer service. [email protected] supported me with aero 15x issues and organised free return swiftly ( II woul like to mention I should pay for return due to wrong warranty picked up)

Currently done few stress test on XTU and no issues top temps was 69 and currently game I am playing got 59 degree so no issues at all with 3.9 GHz on all clocks. Fans are more silent then aero 15x what works perfect for me and my family.

If you can't decide betwen MSI gs65 and aero 15x do not hesitate and take MSI.

You are right about Speedshift and windows settings... now I'm not using Speedshift anymore.
My laptop is not unstable undervolting any further. I like to apply changes litle by little. So, because this is my first undervolting experience, and latest cpu tricks I made was on my older 4770k, I'm going really slow! Thank you.
Ah, for BD Prochot I can try disabling it... I never tryed.

    Thank you! :)

I'm using the latest one downloaded via geforce experience.

So I should be receiving my pressure paper in a few days and will see how bad the contact is between HS and CPU Die. Assuming I get less contact on the upper part of the die (nearest the solitary tripost) which is why I get the 10 - 12 C differential, do I want to sand down the HS evenly or just in certain areas?

What I have noticed is, right after I put a fresh layer of CM MasterGel Maker Nano, my temps are amazing, with time (this instance it worked flawlessly for maybe 1 month), the differential starts up again. I always manage to get it about 5 to 8 degrees between cores, then over time, the gap gets larger and larger.

This is actually the same experience I've had with the exact same thermal paste. It was flawless for like 1 month then my maximum temperatures started gradually rising again and so did the differentials. Although mine is usually a max of 6-8 C differential. Glad to know it wasn't just me.

So do you think that on a long-term side, the grizzly thermal paste is more effective ?

Not sure if my problems are the stress testing lol. I don't know if we should let it 'cure'. I repaste then spend like 2 hours stress testing. Thing works amazing, dropped my Max temperatures to 88°C while maintaining 3.9 GHz but yeah after a month it's back to 90°C and thermal throttling.

I still got a full syringe of the stuff, will probably repaste and run one stress test and leave it. Will considering trying out another paste.

Still don't have the @#$_ to try LM.

did anyone encounter the problem with MSI True Color software which changes the colors of external display connected via thunderbolt port instead of the internal notebook screen?

No, Kryonaut would just make it worse.
You can only keep perfect temps (up to the typical 1 year repasting period) if you use pressure contact paper (i've posted links in the past, but sensorprod is being stubborn as hell now with free samples--(it's called Fujifilm "Ultra Low" prescale), get the IC stuff from amazon instead) to check the balance. If you're getting higher temps on the first 3 even numbered cores (in HWinfo64), then try reducing the thermal pad thickness before taking sandpaper to the heatsink. RMA'ing, which @hmscott suggests really won't help much unless the heatsink has a visible defect. These things are mass machined at the factory, and are almost always convex or something. And the default thermal paste is a phase change stamp by Lairdtech, so its not the paste job that is bad as they are all mass stamped (they are all equally bad).

But in cases like this, contact paper isn't a bad thing.

    Hello,
Been a while but I'm back. Still getting life out of my 9 year old Dell Studio XPS 1645 but it was time to upgrade. I've read through the first 100 pages of this forum and took notes. My unit is set to arrive next week, maybe as soon as Monday.

I will not be doing any BIOS hacking or thermal pasting at this point. I will be undervolting the CPU using throttle stop and have all the info I need to get this done EXCEPT I need to know what FREE program would be recommended to do a stress test (link?) after I do the under volt. After I skim the rest of the forum and get the unit, I'm sure I'll have more questions. Love the knowledge here.

Now for a cool story: I've been on the fence for awhile and kept comparing, reading reviews, etc. I was convinced I'd wait till black friday for a sale. Well, I never pulled the trigger, was not in my budget. Then after Christmas I did another search for "clearance" items. Still, everything was out of my budget. However, I did come across the MSI Stealth at Adorama as an "open box" unit marked down from the list for my model $2,099 (currently on Amazon for $1929) to $1549. Wow, a $550 markdown, with a 3 month warranty, free 30 day return (and probably the remainder of the MSI warranty if it exceeds 3 months). I was also marked as "Excellent+" which is the 2nd highest rating for an open box item. So, knowing Adorama is an actual brick and mortar store, my educated guess is it was the floor model that they are now selling. $1549 was really tempting but still above my budget, so I bookmarked the page and went to ebay looking for more open box items and low and behold, Adorama has an ebay store and the exact same item showed up there except if ordered from there it was free shipping (not the case on their website, odd but true). Well, I'm still tempted and see a box on ebay that says "make an offer" vs "buy now". Hmm, I look into it and decide to give it a try. There was one competing offer so my thought was, they will never accept my offer but it can't hurt to try. So I offered $1,300 and the next day they accepted it and its on its way. My specs should be in my signature (I just added them). So, I think I got a GREAT deal. I thought just a week ago there was no way I'd ever buy this laptop, now I own one! Just hope its not a lemon but hey, its under warranty.

I did plenty of stress testing whether it be aida64, intel xtu, or 3dmark during the first month and I don't think it has a substantial effect on the MasterGel if any at all. I've tried LM and can confirm that it performs better by 2-3 C but but I eventually switched back to normal thermal paste so I could remove the worry of it shorting my MB since I need to transport my laptop a lot for school. I was worried that my previous use of LM might have caused gradual corrosion of the heat sink which would explain the eventual worsening of the MasterGel performance but your experience contradicts that.

Stress test: Prime95 AVX off, search the thread for how to do that. Small FFTs.
    AIDA64 Extreme 30 day trial
    Throttlestop has an benchmark
    XTU has a benchmark.
Check your fabrication date, it's the big sticker on the back. If it's earlier than 2018-07, you may need to open to double check if there is a rivet under the keyboard flex cable.

If there is, you need to either clip it off or find some way to cover it (perhaps electrical tape), this is preemptive measure to avoid the rivet piercing the keyboard flex cable over time.

This issue was addressed in future builds, 2018-07 and onwards for sure, I know the 2018-03 have the issue and their is a gray area between those dates were I have no information.

If you are in that gray area please post and let me know if the rivet is there, so I can update my Reddit post. Thanks and I am sure you will love the device!

Also I recommend you always use microfiber cloth and consider taking off the stickers, had seen 1 user on Reddit post pictures of how those stickers scratched his IPS Panel.

It's always a good idea to either keep that cloth protector that came between your keyboard and screen (as delivered originally), or get a thin soft cloth to put between the keyboard and screen to act as a buffer to prevent the keycaps or other rough surfaces from scratching the screen covering.

Here are some examples, I don't have a specific brand or sku to recommend, I've got a few I've reused over the years.

    https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias=electronics&field-keywords=pc+laptop+cloth+screen+keyboard

Many people notice after years of use that the outline of the laptop keyboard is marred into the soft screen covering, a bit late to do anything about it afterwards, so it's best to do it from the start.

I also drape that cloth over the keyboard when leaving my laptop open (but locked) at work sites, to keep dust and debris from getting into the keyboard, and to keep prying eyes / fingers from "playing" with my laptop.

Note the people that mention it or complain about you using it... :)

A long time ago that I also used a "permanent" affixed screen protector, now at most I'll use a sheet of Red Vellum for outdoor work in the dark - to cut the brightness and stop the bright screen from ruining night-vision.

The thin soft cloth over the keyboard solves the screen marring problem completely for me, so I've stopped getting the additional screen protection.

Thanks, I'm definitely going to need instructions on running a stress test. My only goal is to see before and after temps of the CPU and GPU after undervolting and tweaking a few settings in Throttlestop that I have read about in here. Not worried at this point about other numbers, I did find the HWinfo freeware but am really clueless how to run an appropriate test before and after undervolting.

Also, it seems most people don't do anything to the GPU, I'm not a power user so not sure I need to either. Discussion got a little over my head but said something like you need to overclock the GPU to undervolt it. All I have seen is the Throttlestop options and I've never used it. Would love some suggestions on what, if any, adjustments would be recommended on the GPU in Throttlestop.

Thanks for the heads up on the rivet issue. A picture with an arrow or circle of exactly where to look for it would be great! "rivet under keyboard flex cable">not sure what to look for and if it requires removing the motherboard, I'll take my chances (for now). I'll have a lot to do already, remove bloatware, windows updates, driver updates, services tweaks (I follow black viper's page) create a backup including a windows 10 bootable usb drive (still not sure how to do this, I'll create an iso image on my external hard drive using windows backup application but also want just a stand alone windows 10 media on a flash drive, learned my lesson on not having one), undervolt, test for stability, measure temps, rinse, repeat, until stable PLUS this is my 1st windows 10 machine so need to learn my way around. All of these things are why I'm reading this thread, bookmarking several pages, taking notes, etc BEFORE I even have the unit in hand.

    Anyway, thanks for any help!

I'll have to wait and see if I get the cloth since mine is an open box item but did say its coming in original box so I'm hopeful. Good advice, the screen I'm looking at right now has marks from not protecting it

MSI Afterburner I managed 215 on Core and 300 on Memory (I have seen someone who managed 600 on Memory) - I could not get custom curve to work in MSI Afterburner, tried for hours. Best results were just with the slider.

      CpuSupportsAVX2=0
      CpuSupportsAVX512F=0
      CpuSupportsFMA4=0

Notes: Nvidia Driver > than 399.41 + MSI Afterburner will break Optimus GPU switching. Options
    • Stay on 399.41 and use MSI Afterburner as normal
    • Close MSI Afterburner after windows boot, your OC will be set and you can close it and it will stick
    • Do nothing and just forget about Optimus GPU switching - Battery Life will be affected.
    • I have a Task Scheduler script that was written by a friend, I will see if he lets me upload it. It loads MSI Afterburner and closes it if it detects you are on battery thus reenabling Optimus switching.
I switched and disable Windows Defender as much as I could and loaded NOD32 and got higher benchmark scores. Definitely recommend NOD32 over Windows Defender, you can find cheap serial numbers online (Ebay, Amazon, G2A, etc.), if you buy directly from ESET website its about $50+ for one year. Here is a 30 day trial for their Internet Security suite, a bit more complex but you can try them and see if you're convinced, I no longer use this one, I went for just the NOD32 Thanks @Ultra Male !!

EDIT 12412513: Ill keep editting this post if I think of other things.

Hi all, first off thanks for all the info, I just upgraded from the Aero 15X and love the build quality, keyboard/trackpad, and general design of the Stealth Thin. It's awesome. Haven't done any undervolting yet, just installed a fresh version of windows and downloaded all drivers new. Only problem I've had so far is that when I boot up Darksiders 2 and the GPU goes into work mode, I hear the strangest sound repeat every 3 or 4 seconds, coming from underneath the area above the Esc key. It's a series of clicks, in pairs, that repeat about 8 times, rapidly. It's not super noticeable because the fans are running full blast, but I'm afraid that it's a problem with the build of the machine. I'm not sure what to do....has anyone else encountered this? The only talk I've heard of it was someone asked and people were guessing as to what it could be, but nothing definitive. Thanks everyone!

Or just use Nvidia Inspector to overclock your GPU automatically on boot. You might need to set compatibility to an earlier OS in its attributes, but it works flawlessly.

    Hello all

Just a quick update from my review:

Laptop doing great and I can't recommend thermal upgrade from HIDevolution more.

Currently playing Aion maxed graphic with over 100 fps CPU runs on 60° no more

Done benchmark for FFXIV all maxed out and gain 14067 score and cpu not went over 70°

Very impressed with result. No issues at all with fresh windows copy and silent option instead of dragon centre.

I got only 1 question is MSI true colour worth doing? Just don't want to install to many unnecessary software?

    Thank you

Hey, thanks for all the great info. Regarding rufus link. It says to browse to the iso file. Thats my problem. How do I get an iso file of the MSI windows 10 installation? I can do a system backup on an external drive. I just want the windows 10 installation by itself on a flash drive should I choose to do a fresh install. I'm guessing the MSI tool creates more than just the windows 10 installation since they require a 32GB drive where Windows 10 by itself only requires a 8gb drive. Am I missing something? Also, your list should be pinned to page one.
    Thanks!!!

I tried this with my current laptop and microsoft said I had to download from manufacturer since the OS was OEM installed and not a stand alone purchase. Do you or anyone know if this will be the case with the operating system pre-installed on my MSI laptop? Microsoft may have changed their policy as I tried this on a Dell installed version of Windows 7.

Just use the Media Creation Tool, the installer will pull the windows number from the BIOS(?), it gets it automatically from somewhere...

If not just hit skip when it prompts for serial and once you enter your email and stuff it will detect that you have a genuine Windows 10 key.

Question. Has anybody tried to download an ISO image of Windows 10 instsallation media from Microsoft to create a bootable usb and do a fresh install of Windows? ***The key being did you do this having had a pre-installed version of Windows 10 installed by MSI. I tried this a while back with Windows 7 and Microsoft directed me to my OEM to get it (who wanted to charge me) since they installed it.

If nobody replies can someone try to go to the microsoft website and download an image using your pre-installed windows 10 key? Of course I'm gonna try once my laptop arrives and if nobody relies I'll post what happened

^^^ CAN WE GET AN ADMIN TO PIN THIS TO PAGE ONE OF THIS THREAD. Just need to confirm/edit the Prime 95 text and add some instructions on how to use that text in Prime 95 (for a newbie like me) but the links in that post are super useful, I know some are repeats but some are the first time I've seen them in this thread. Thanks!

Hello, I'll be bringing in my GS65 for RMA since my internal speakers started crackling right after I removed an hdmi cable from it. My main issue is that I've spent a lot of time configuring power settings, windows 10 and etc. on it and wouldn't wanna do it again incase they need to replace the motherboard so I have a few questions..

1.) Are the speakers soldered into the mainboard?
2.) If they are and they need to replace the board, will my settings be different once they return it or as long as they don't replace the ssd everything will be fine? Is there any way to back these up for contingency purposes?

    1. Speakers are connected through speaker wires that are very fragile.
    2. If they don't need to replace the motherboard then they will give you back the same system. You can backup your system image using Macrium Reflect onto an external media.

MSI Afterburner Setup 460 Beta10 Build14218, this new version has OC Scanner which sets a conservative OC for your GPU. Install this, open the voltage curve and in the top left it says ''OC Scanner" and hit SCAN.

After about 15 to 20 minutes it will shoot out a result, a stable Core OC and Memory OC. Write down these numbers and start OC with the slider from there.

I did mine manually and found Core: +215 and Memory: +300 to be stable for me, the OC Scanner suggested +126 & +300.

From the suggested voltages provided by the OC Scanner, you can then start trying out small increments until you reach your best stable clock. I would test with FireStrike, if you go too high in OC you will notice your score will begin to drop, just play with it until you reach your best mark and your games run stable.
