If the trackpad freezes but not the keyboard, or for example, you are using a USB mouse and that never freezes, that's just typical spaghetti engineering with trackpads. Happens to me all the time. Happens less if the trackpad is completely cleaned of any particles.

Disassemblely isn't too bad. Yes, I'd rather not have to pull the board, but it can be done still. The screws are all the same length, which actually makes it easier.

I agree, Best Buy model offers good savings with marginal performance difference. Most wouldn't/won't notice...

I bought the Best Buy model as a factory refurb. Mine came with 2-8gb 2666mhz sticks but still the Sata SSD and Intel wireless(which I also prefer over the Killer option). I'd call that lucky if one of my fans hadn't gone bad on day 22...

Is it doing it more so when the CPU is thinking, like when opening file explorer? Because that is normal in small doses, but not 5sec doses...

Trackpad and/or mouse issue? Bluetooth mouse?

Now that you put it that way, a slight jitter / lag when opening or switching aplications.
you can observe the power led. does it turn from white to orange/amber when you experience that unresponsiveness?

if yes, you laptop is simply detects that the application might need the GPU and hence switches to the nvidia gpu, the lag is normal ( that's just how Nvidia Optimus works)

Unresponsiveness for 1-2 seconds is normal , even 3 for that matter, I have had those freezes,

Again, do check how aggressively have you undervolted. For me going beyond 155mV causes those freezes more often and sometimes, the laptop just hangs up, the audio hangs up too ..(that hung up sound..) and simply restarts.

We mostly check how undervolting perfroms under stress, not under idle conditions though.
When under load, the CPU consumes more power and in Idle state consumes less power, I believe with undervolt, will consume even less which is not sustainable.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks,
    Vikas Singh

I know what you mean, but this is just a hard stop on the trackpad. Almost feels like the trackpad driver/software is resetting. For example, a sometimes after the freeze, I lose scroll functionality for around 10 seconds as well once it starts responding again.
Kinda weird, I just checked and found that I'd actually never installed the Synaptics trackpad driver to begin with. But had no issues until this week. I'll try to install the drivers and see if that fixes it. Although the MSI support website looks like it's been down all day. Driver page isn't working, so I guess I'll have to try tomorrow.

Definitely not the Optimus stutter. I've got used to that for the last 6 months. This is some new kind of freezing. Maybe something from the latest Windows update isn't playing nice. Going to try to install drivers once the MSI website starts working again and give it a shot.

Not that I can tell, really. It does it when idle as well.

This is trackpad only. I'm going to try using a USB mouse tomorrow and see if it gives me the same issue, although I doubt it will. Seems trackpad driver/software related to me.

Edit: Apologies for the multiple reply posts. If an admin could combine them into one post to reduce the clutter, that would be great

stresstesting the cpu with with themps 75-85c. it throttles at 3ghz and xtu is showing power limit throttling non-stop for the whole stresstest (20min).What can I do? settings attached,.

Aside from better thermal paste and adding some thermal pads...

You can turn down the multipliers on your turbo. You'll greatly reduce heat allowing the CPU to stay ramped up in turbo longer, although at a lower clock.

I have to run mine at 36/36 35/35 34/34 to stay at ~80-81C in GTA V topping out rarely at 83C(CPU package temps). Stock thermals with back elevated 1".

Lowering the turbo multipliers means less power needed to the CPU. You may be able to undervolt further with reduced multipliers. I can stress test without errors at -.185, but if I turn my multipliers up past 36, then I get errors(64bit tests in TS).

im not stressing the gpu so i really dont think i have to do what you say to prevent POWER limit throttling? its really weird that it is power throttling 24/7. my msi ge40 is runnibg between 75-85c without throttling on all cores, and no power limit throttling.

Ah yes, reading comprehension...I missed the power part.

You can set a negative power offset in the bios so that the cpu is tricked into thinking it's not at the intended TDP yet. Do so at your own risk though...

Settings should be under: Advanced/Power & Performance/CPU - Power Management Control/CPU VR Settings/ Core IA VR Settings

IMON Slope, IMON Offset, and IMON Prefix are what we are primarily looking for. Offset values xxxxx=xx.xxx watts.

Again, do so at own risk. You can follow these values. Make sure to undo your undervolt if you adjust the IA AC/DC Loadlines.

Hi all... I would like to thanks all people contributing this thread. Lots of usefull info. I'm spending lot of time reading and learning about my GS65 and 8750H.

I would like to share my new Cinebench record:

    What are the risks exactly?
So I reset what I've done in xtu, enter these values in the bios and then I undervolt in xtu?

The Samsung PLS, AUO AHVA and LG IPS screens all have essentially the same technology. LG just came to market first with their IPS trademark. That is why you will see IPS-level if the screen is Samsung PLS or AUO AHVA. So, all are susceptible to back light bleed, and glow.

    Hey,

I am not very knowledgeable or experienced but I have BD Prochot unticked as suggested by many here.

Also, Speedshift on throttle stop does not work as intended until u match it with windows Speedshift setting!

Is ur laptopl unstable on undervolting any further? As many here have easily undervolted to -150 and I feel that can improve cinebench result.

    Hope this will be helpful!

My computer arrives this Friday and I was wondering, (aside from tweaks by Ultra Male) what are the typical "gaming" setting adjustments that I can make to help with the overall stability and performance of the laptop? I have read a lot about undervolting and fan speed adjustments, but admittedly, I am brand new to the gaming pc realm. I am a fast learner, so if someone might take the time to not only state which adjustments would be best, but also explain why these adjustments are helpful, I would not take your time for granted. I am asking this here specifically because perhaps there are tips or adjustments that are specifically helpful for this laptop?

Additionally, if this is just such a newbie question that you feel like you answer all the time, don't be shy to laugh at me while pointing me to a thread that answers my questions lol. The internet just has so much to say about this question that it makes answering it for someone with limited knowledge about computers difficult. Weeding through the forest feels overwhelming when there isn't at least *some* direction for where to start and giving a sense of direction of where to go.

Seeing they used Dragon Center, I read that for some reason setting changes in DC are reset when system is reboot? Maybe this isn't the case for fan settings. At any rate, thank you for the link!! This is a helpful place to start.

(Warning, super noob question ahead that is undoubtedly going to make people laugh): What are "turbo multipliers" my best guess is it relates to the CPU speed and this is something people usually overclock, is this just them underclocking the CPU? I ask this because I thought undervolting was the same as underclocking...I may need to step back and buy a "for dummies" book before asking anymore questions in forums...lol.

Hello guys I finally received my GS65 yesterday. I am convinced that it is indeed a great laptop, beautiful design, and...extremely hot, as people always say.
I ordered from Gentech PC with repaste and FujiPoly thermal pad, changed the fan speed, undervolted and limited turbo ratio immediately when I received the laptop, attached additional fan to help cooling, elevated the botton with another fan, and finally I get around 50℃ on idle and just above 70℃ during the XTU CPU Stress test.

But, when I get into games, even just Overwatch on default settings, I get this↓ upload_2018-12-12_18-45-20.png
Is this...normal? Should I consider returning it? Or have I done something wrong

    All good just keep asking.

Undervolting is, if you give your CPU less juice for the same frequency. That in turn will lower it's heat production as more watts = higher temps. Also you will hit 'power limits' later. Hitting those power limits means that CPU is clocking itself lower, so it burns less juice -> stays withing the limits.

Turbo multipliers: Here you should know what multipliers are. CPU clocks are not controlled by directly telling them at what clock they should operate. There's a base System clock of 100mhz, and now you tell your CPU with 'multipliers' at what clock it should operate. 3ghz would be a multiplier of 30 for example.
The GS65 has a non turbo max freq of 2.2ghz (Multiplier of 22). But it can turbo up much higher (4.1ghz single core / multiplier of 41).
When we talk about turbo multipliers, we most of the time mean 'the highest clock the CPU should be able to clock at'. Also you can set 6 different multipliers. So you could set for example a multiplier of 41 for one core, 40 for 2 cores, 38 for 3 cores, 36 for 4 cores active etc. Then your system would lower the max CPU speed, the more cores are online. You would need to activate core parking for this to work properly though.

Core parking: Turning on and off cores dynamicly. If this feature is turned off (which it is on default), every core will be forced to clock at the same frequency. So if 1 core is being used, therefore is clocked at 3.9ghz, every other unused core also clocks at the same speed.
Now keep in mind, a CPU that's clocked at 3ghz but has 0 load, will produce way less heat and use little juice, than a CPU at the same freq with 100% load on it.
So the biggest benefit of core parking is, to have the option so set a max freq for the number of cpu cores online, as not every core has to be online at all times.

(Anyone, feel free to correct anything that's wrong)

Hey @Ultra Male /Phoenix, I just wanted to thank you for the guides on the various forums.

I am not sure which of the tweaks (you posted / listed so many) is the one responsible for my increased Benchmark scores.

    See image.

I also did the NOD32, As well as the OOSU10 tweaks.

    OneNote: Phoenix Tweaks IMG

I got maybe a 300 or 400 increase in Firestrike even after having the PC running with background task (OneDrive, True Color, DashLane), NOT fresh reboot either about 4 hours doing regular office use.

Anyway just wanted to say thank you! [IMG]

If I understand right then you mean that when you right click on desktop it does not show Intel Graphics control centre or it does show but you are unable to open it.

I had a similar situation where I had to download both Intel and Nvidia drivers. Uninstall both drivers using DDU after successful uninstallion device manager will show them as Microsoft display Adapters.

Now you have to install Intel Drivers first!
Then you have to install Nvidia.

Note: Windows will try to install drivers before you which you have to avoid. For me simply disconnecting from internet worked.

I hope this works for you!

    Anyone having sound issues?

I uninstalled the realtek drivers so that I could update to the new one (8519)

    I have tried everything now,

uninstalled the older one, restart, update to 8433, restart, install nahimic > nahimic shows drivers are not up to date.
uninstalled existing driver, restart, instal 8519, restart, install nahimic > nahimic shows loading and then just crashes
uninstall existing driver, restart, install 8433, no restart, install nahimic > nahimic works, but I get no sound from the speaker.

How did the others resolve this ?

    Thanks,

    Hey,

I was able to install 8519 without any issues and as far as I remember Nahimic used to work on it.

I had issue with 8519 where if I connected headphones in headphone jack I would get BSOD.

So I updated my driver's with drivers available on this website : https://www.tenforums.com/drivers-hardware/5993-latest-realtek-hd-audio-driver-version.html
(Sorry, if I am not supposed to be posting such links. Let me know and I will remove it.)

I had to install it manually from device manager and browsing to the extracted drivers location.

I uninstalled Nahimic as it crashes certain application like Utorrent and I don't really see a gain using it. So, I cannot assure if Nahimic works with these drivers but my headphone jack problem was solved and everything seems to be working fine!

    I guess it's worth a try!

    Fixed it.

Nahimic simply doesn't work with 8519.
    I uninstalled them,
Let let windows install some generic version, update to 8433,

Shut down the laptop, flipped it over, hit the battery reset button for 10 seconds, plugged in the charger (laptop won't boot without this) and then finally installed Nahimic.

If at any point you cannot hear anything from the speakers or nahimic cannot detect your device, simply perform a hard reset of the battery.

    Cheers.

Fwiw, I've been undervolted in BIOS for about two weeks, using the machine for work every day and running intensive DL workloads every night.

I set my levels in XTU first and stress tested the hell out of it with a variety of windows utilities. Rock stable at -.185.

I was getting intermittently freezes in Ubuntu under DL loads, 3-4-5, however many hours in. Backed off to -.165 in BIOS and totally rock solid now for hours on end.

    Primarily, cooking your CPU.

This is tricking the system by reporting a lower power draw than what you are actually drawing by setting a negative offset on the power draw values. You will essentially be drawing more power than what the manufacturer intended. This could cause a host of issues, mostly relating to thermals. That said, your thermal limits ought to save you, but that's never a garantee.

You won't be able to undervolt much after this, if it all.

If you mess up some other values on accident, then the possibilities of what could go wrong become sort of endless.

    Be careful.

You can still undervolt as you do normally if you leave AC loadline and DC loadline at default value 180 and change only the IMON and TDC related options.

The latest Intel driver BETA 25.20.100.6448 DOES NOT include Intel graphic control panel in the driver.

You'll have to boot into safe mode and use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to remove all the Intel legacy driver (Pre 25.20.100.6448 all are legacy driver) and boot back into normal windows mode then install the BETA 25.20.100.6448. And then search for Intel Graphic Control Center on Microsoft store then install it.

You won't be able to access it from right click on the desktop anymore in the future as it now an Universal Windows Driver (UWD), only accessible through windows search or start menu.

First and foremost, thanks for the help guys!

Seems you do have to uninstall in safe mode using DDU. After that I found the control panel in the Windows store and it worked. But one way or the other it also appears when I right click on my desktop. Too bad it didn't fix the problem I thought it would fix. Namely some games don't want to run fullscreen, they just hang. Examples: Stellaris, Europa Universalis 4 and Virtual Pool 4. They do work in Windowed (borderless). I read somewhere it had to do with the scaling options in the Intel control panel, but changing them does not work. I also tried running them using HDMI on my TV to bypass the iGPU but it made no difference. Also tried different Nvidia drivers.

    Maybe anyone knows the solution?

It's not a big deal, but I like my systems to perform without any issues. :)

For me GTA V many times starts windowed. I don't know why it does that but simply pressing Alt key + Enter key makes it full screen.

Common issue. Happens to me across different machines.

Seems to be more prevalent when I've done something after launching the game but before the game actually launches/loads, like minimizing Steam or resetting values in HWmonitor. Haven't found what consistently triggers it yet, though I haven't spent much time on it either.

Tried it, it did not improve system stability, on the contrary, entire laptop kept freezing when playing Rocket League. Reverted back to .10F and no issues since.

Anybody have problem with the hinges? I went to bestbuy to check it out and it feels cheap and could break in a few months. Also I've been seeing people saying the GS65 is cheaper than the Aero 15x, but in HIDvolution it cost like 200-300$ more, am I missing something?

Depends on the configuration, there are many variants of the same model from every laptop with different specs.

Email [email protected] to get your Notebook Review Forum discount PLUS make sure you buy your laptop from them because they have the best build quality and thermal paste application and cooling mods like the Fujipoly Extreme Thermal pads to mitigate overheating and thermal throttling.

For some reason the orange light for me is constantly on. I have changed the nvidia global settings to only use the integrated graphics but it's still using the dgpu.

Are you using the laptop screen or did you connect an external monitor? Afaik the dgpu controls external monitors...

MSI Afterburner doesn't allow correct Optimus functionality with nvidia driver versions more recent than 399.XX.

    This is known bug.

Yep, MSI AB is not going to be fixed any time soon as the author lacks the hardware to test.

    Check this out.

Today, NVIDIA Inspector is a more valid solution for Optimus users.

I was customizing them both with 512gb ssd, 16gb RAM and cooling mods. The aero 15x was 2100$ while the msi is 2300$.
Also do you think the price of gs65 will drop at all in the next few months after CES with announcements of new laptops? I receive many advice to wait it out for the new laptops, since 2k is a lot and some of the new laptops might have better specs at that price too.
