Gheeze. Did you sit on it or something? I've experienced none of these other than the uneven core temperatures which I expect from notebooks since their heatsink assemblies can't clamp down as firmly as desktop and server coolers.

Most of this was from factory. I'm happy to know that this is my bad luck kicking in, and not a bad choice of laptop :).

And NO, i have not done anything with this laptop. I have used it in school for 2 weeks, the rest of the time it has been sitting on a laptop cooler, to keep the under side cooler, helps a bit.

Okay, yeah, I dunnow about anyone else but if I saw something so obviously damaged out of the box I'd return it ASAP. Wouldn't even try to use it.

Most of the stuff I didn't even notice to begin with. And the stuff that acutally was a problem to begin with, I didn't find too bad. But all these things added up in the end is just too much.

    Hei Guys,

received my GS65 today (1070, 32GB Ram). Very impressed by the machine and the performance so far (silent on idle and when doing office stuff/surfing; good temps; high fps in demanding games, brilliant screen etc.). Kinda surprised regarding the good build quality as well (expected it to be way worse depending on what people mentioned in some reviews); very minor bending, no crack sounds.

I only have one concern so far and that relates to the cpu fan(s). When gaming or manually increasing the speed of the cpu fan(s) there is a high pitched sound noticable coming more from the right side of the laptop. It's not a huuuuge deal but not sure if that is normal (and if I should get it replaced). No high pitched sound coming from the gpu fan just a very strong "woooosh" sound. I attached a sound file of what it sounds like from a 30cm distance (dragon center: cooler bust and then set back to auto).

You actually notice the high pitched "squeak" more when the fans turn down a little. Sounds a little bit like a drill at the dentist :(. Hope you can recognize it from the recording. Anyone else having the same issue?

    Cheers

    Hi

I got my GS65 8RF this week (32Gb RAM, 512Gb SSD, 1070 Max-Q) and I'm really happy with it. I bought it specifically for doing 3D modelling (Blender, Substance and Fusion 360) and it's great. I had been fairly nervous having read some horror stories about build quality, fan noise etc.

So far though the only issue I'm having is that the screen seems to flicker occasionally, mostly noticeable on dark backgrounds. My Blender background is dark grey and it seems to fairly quickly flick to a more green hue and then back again. There's no obvious cause but it seems to be happening pretty consistently. Any suggestions?

I did search the web and the only hit I got was someone in this forum but they seem to have RMA'd their machine and not commented since.

For context I'm in the UK and I ordered my laptop from Amazon so if I have to return it I should be able to but obviously I'd rather not if there's another way to resolve it as everything else is great.

    Thanks.

Update: I've just found that the flickering doesn't happen if I run Blender in full-screen mode. That made me wonder if it was a Blender issue but then I opened Photoshop and I'm seeing the same flickering in the grey space around the canvas. So now I'm really confused.

hi back with another question, i have been playing with undervolting to get my temps down and noticed that one of my cores is dramatically (~10 degrees) hotter than the other 5 - seems to be causing throttling all on its lonesome. could this cause major performance drawbacks or is it nothing to be concerned about?

here's what the temps are looking like on XTU's stress test:

Always core 2 the hottest core on these MSI Throttlebooks. Core 2 is closest to the VRM's. Convex heatsink + slightly convex CPU slug + thermal pads on VRM's causing less pressure on cores 0, 2 and 4 (topside cores), with core 2 right in the middle of the convex.....what could possibly go wrong?

    Only fix:
    1) RMA (good luck).
    2) change CPU VRM and thermal pads from 1mm to 0.5mm Arctic pads (CPU side only) and pray and carefully repaste (CPU and GPU) and rebalance the tripod heatsink. And repaste with Coolermaster Gel Maker Nano. And pray.

    3) sand the CPU heatsink flat with a PREMIUM sanding block (requires removing the c-clips from the screws to get the screws out), no more than 0.1mm of sanding. Good luck with that too.

Had that issue once with another laptop (also only visible on a grey background). Here the solution was pretty simple: just uncheck the adaptive brightness in your windows power options. That did the trick for me back then. Maybe give that a try?

Do you have the issue with the high pitched (only cpu) fan noise that I mentioned above? Very unsure if that's just normal behavior of the machine.

I had the same issue with Adobe software and other 3D software, with the viewport or the single program flickering when moving the mouse. It seems to be something related to nVidia driver. Doesn't happen with other programs.

just a design flaw then eh? that's a shame, i'll probably live with it in that case. realistically i'm not gonna be pushing this baby to its limit most of the time anyway. thanks for the info.

For anybody having sleep battery drain issues, Hibernate looks to be working better, over 8 hours drained 3% rather than like 10... still need to test more

Thanks for that, there doesn't appear to be any settings for adaptive brightness though except for the one that lowers the brightness when on battery or low power. But it's possible I'm looking in the wrong place I'm still fairly new to Windows.

The fans are pretty loud when I switch to the Cooler Booster mode in Dragon but there's no distinct high-pitch noise coming from one side just the usual coil whine of fans. In regular use it's pretty quiet, even when working in 3D with the rendered preview enabled. It only really kicks in when I run final renders.

I'm wondering if any guru here can teach me how to unlock bios for gs65 8rf? thanks, I have read the #2 post info but I don't understand, can someone make it simplier procedure like step and download file. please .

Also after unlocking, is it possible to overclock the intel uhd630 a bit more, like from 1150 mhz to 1250 mhz, cause now adobe premiere pro cc mainly use igpu for video preview while editing, only use nvidia 1070 when export / rendering. so the power of igpu is very important.

    Sorry for my delay.
I achieved this result through two stages of modifications. Physical modifications (1) and system modifications (2).

    1. Hardware modifications (repasting)

First of all, we must lose the fear of making the change of thermal paste, if we do not know much about it, we can ask for help from some friend with more experience on it.
But without this (liquid metal) its impossible to get lower temperatures (I checked it.)

    To use:
    -Precision tool set.
    -Conductonaut (Thermal Grizzly)
    -Scotch Super 33+
    - Be brave!!

I know that many are afraid of gallium (Liquid metal). Then leave that fear, the gallium attached to copper simply creates an alloy that will eventually benefit the heat conductivity.

I made the change by myself, use this reference video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=698R4kdSjgk&t=293s

Instead of nail polish use Scotch 33+ around the CPU and the GPU, to prevent contact of the liquid metal to the surroundings. Be careful when applying it.
At the time of screwing, do it delicately, doing 3 turns on each screw repeatedly so that the liquid metal spreads evenly, I mention this, because the first time I did not use this technique, after this one of the cores had up 20 ° C higher than the others, I WAS BADLY DISTRIBUTED. So I had to repeat the process.
Do not press the screws too much, just enough.

    2. Software modification (ThrottleStop)
I think we've seen a lot in this forum, so I'll just leave the screenshots of my current configuration.
    https://ibb.co/cK3J0K
    https://ibb.co/myjfEe

To create a task that starts ThrottleStop every time we log in, watch this video.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNt9L3BWOFo

Remember to always have the energy plan in "Balanced" and not in "Best Performance"

I hope this helps you a lot, and you can lower your temperatures just like me.
    Regards!!!

PS, Im not an english speaker, so excuse my misspellings.

I found that video as well and had already added it to my library. These MSI laptops with their upside down motherboards require a lot more work. I too am on the fence about opening up my $1500 laptop and breaking it inadvertently. At some point, I will have no choice but to open it up if for nothing else to spring cleaning. The only concern I have right now is with the caution warnings regarding the fragile cables. There must be close to a dozen cable connections that you have to unplug before you can lift the motherboard up and out. I worry that I'll forget which cable goes where. As an ex-Navy guy, I can certainly tell which ends are female/male. Just don't want the thing to start ticking on me. :)

Probably not a good idea to do it through BIOS, since GS65 does not reset to default using the full cmos clear method, someone already tried pulling the cmos battery and still no luck of returning the settings back to default after undervolted the CPU. if the BIOS loading is failed due to the CPU not able to start, you will probably need to do a SPI programming to the bios chip.

I'd say download XTU and see if you are able to tweak it from there.

Hey y'all, I'm having a pretty bad problem and looking for some help. It's been about a month since I received my laptop from GenTechPC. I have kept prestigious care of this laptop (because it costs a fortune). That being said, my enter, home, and function keys are malfunctioning. They seem to "phase" in and out. If I hold them down for ~20 seconds, they phase in and work, as long as I use them once every ten or so seconds. If I don't use them, they phase out. I've flashed the BIOS, updated the EC, uninstalled SS Engine, uninstalled SCM, then reinstalled both of them. None of those things worked. I then did a factory reset in windows (the delete every option) and it seemed to work, but about two hours later (after I installed SS Engine and SCM), they started malfunctioning again. Any ideas anyone???

Does anyone have the fingerprint sensor? And if so, what is your full model name (not S/N)?

I have been researching, and it seems that only some of the newer ones have the fingerprint sensor. I am just wondering if i get a new laptop with a fingerprint sensor, if i get a replacement for my laptop (probably not). I sent mine for repair, because to many things was wrong with it, so curious about what is going to happen, and what MSI will respond to my whole page document of problems. But maybe they would have run out of the older version of the gs65, and then i get one of the newer ones? Unlikely though.

Hi everyone, I´ve had the GS65 now afew days.
Everything is awesome, except one thing.
My usb mouse is behaving weird, it freezes and stops responding from time to time when on desktop for a few seconds at the time randomly, not when playing games it seams.
Its not the computer that freezes because if the USB mouse is unresponsive the track pad works flawlessly.
    Any tips and tricks ?

That's because MSI stupidly enables the Intel Software Guards Extension on all their laptops which is only needed for software developers who want to incorporate security into their apps. The only way to disable it is if you have an unlocked BIOS or contact a guy names Svet on the MSI forums so you can buy an unlocked BIOS from him so you can disable that cancer.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience. :)
With ThrottleStop you have made and undervolt only, it's right? You did not enable the Speedshift or made changes to core ratio.
Can I ask why always have the energy plan in "Balanced" and not in "Best Performance"?

    Thank you again.

    P870 TM1 with i9 9900K or bust, brother!
Or whatever that new chipset Clevo (Z390?) will be called.

Average users should NOT have to pay to unlock the Bios to:

    1) fix black screen errors when switching to the iGPU and back to the dGPU <--this has caused MULTIPLE RMA's in the past. Shipping costs are not refunded. Neither is wasted time and stress.

    2) mouse freezes on the desktop with an external mouse but not in game (never heard of this one).

    3) BASIC undervolting. I mean what's the deal with this? People already "permanently" bricked their LOCKED Bios already (Not on the Titan but on the other models where Clear CMOS isn't working) by setting a static VCORE of 0v. If you can already do that, I don't think someone setting a -500mv undervolt is any worse.

    4) GT73 Bios .323 and .325 have the DDR Memory multipliers unhidden for you.
Older bios versions have them HIDDEN unless you unlock them. What.

I'm done with MSI. I'm not even buying the WT75. I liked the look of that laptop too.

    1) No guarantee it will take a 9900K CPU
    2) No guarantee it will not use NOS BATTERY BOOST
    3) No guarantee the Power Limit override settings will bypass DEFAULT CPU TDP (see the 16L13 thread--16L13 is limited to 91W TDP unless you use Imon Slope/Offset hacks).

It's compatible with Z370 chipset. It just needs the microcodes added. Prema bios will add them.

    New GS65 owner here.

Yesterday I got my laptop and wanted to update my NVIDIA drivers, to my surprise I could only install 398.35 from MSI website while on the NVIDIA site there was no such version to even download , but only 398.36 from June (!).

When I tried to install 399.07 from NVIDIA's website or simply downloaded Experience and let it update my drivers I got that annoying "this nvidia graphics driver is not compatible with this version of windows" message.

That means that GeForce Experience cannot update my drivers automatically and that I simply cannot install the newest versions of drivers which is amazingly stupid. I guess this is intentional by MSI and wanted to ask if there's any workaround to this so I can update my drivers normally like every other human being on this planet. Will a format help with this? Is there anything else to do without the need of formatting?

Also I should note that I updated my Windows 10 to its last version AND upgraded from Home to Pro.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, exactly that one, but from this link:
    https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/137272/en-us

To be on the safe side, I downloaded those drivers from your link, packages are identical and so is the outcome:
"The Standard NVIDIA graphics drivers is not compatible with this version of Windows. Please update your driver using GeForce Experience to download the correct version".

MSI also offers "their own version" of GeForce Experience from the Utilities section on their website ( https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GS65-Stealth-Thin-8RF.html#down-utility ), weirdly enough it's called "NVIDIA Graphics APP", their version also notifies me about the latest version of drivers (399.07) but guess what, when downloading it and choosing "Custom Installation" it also fails the OS check and yields the same result.

    Please help, I'm getting desperate.

Care to explain? I also tried to install 398.36 from NVIDIA website (as I said it's 2 months old but it was close enough to the MSI version which was 398.35), it also failed. Why would the outcome be different when downloading from this website? I saw they just link to nvidia.com anyway...

I believe it's updated quarterly as far as database goes, but MSI needs to submit the change request to Nvidia.
If you use the modified version then it will work, but warning will prompt you to confirm to proceed with installation.

I'm from France and got my gs65 2 month ago. I even can't install the latest official MSI drivers 398.35 !
I got the same error message that it is not compatible with my (up to date) windows version.

    Older one 391.48 worked.

The funny things is that you must have the latest drivers to play Battlefield 5 open beta (i.e. > 399.00)

So nice for gaming laptop seriously...

Does someone has a trick ? I will have a look to the driver mod...

Does someone know how to secure erase the SSD? I want to send back my GS65 and don't know how to erase my data. Samsung Magician doesn't recognize the SSD and Parted Magic does not boot.

Edit: btw I bought mine without any OS. So I just want to completely wipe the ssd. Glad if someone knows an answer.

Update: I am able to boot into Parted Magic now. Gives me the alert "Error. Disk is not erased!", tho :(

Eraser has been around for a long time. You can use it booted in Windows to erase files / folders / disks or from a boot device for whole device erase:

DO SOLID STATE DRIVES SSD’S REALLY DESTROY DATA?
By admin Posted September 13, 2017
    https://eraser.heidi.ie/do-solid-state-drives-ssds-really-destroy-data/

    "...
The waters are muddier when it comes to deleting files on SSD’s. They are forever rearranging files to optimize storage. The information may eventually be overwritten, but again it may not. Read how a bunch of engineers from University of California only achieved 25% to 96% success when they tried to delete records. Hence a shadow of the information always remained on the SSD.

The Only Way to Delete Data from SSD’s with Certainty

You already know the answer. The only definite, absolute, and fool proof way to destroy data on an SSD (or an HDD) is to reformat the device. You could even go one stage further, and squash it with a steamroller, as writer Terry Pratchett’s pal did to his unfinished manuscripts in accordance with his last will and testament. We are happy the vintage steam-driven beast made in 1923 survived intact. The data apparently did not."

Using Eraser to fill up the storage device with random data (there are several choices of patterns / standards) completely, and then doing it again and again (passes) will improve the deletion %, but the only way to be sure is with physical destruction of the device and all of the storage chips inside.
