SDelete from sysinternals. Does the same thing that Eraser does without the pretty UI and scheduling.
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/sdelete

Self-encrypting drives can be "erased" by changing the master (user? I forget which) password for the device. Changing the master (user?) password renders the data unreadable short of targeted first world government security agency attacks. I don't know if the drives MSI ship are self-encrypting but they're probably not (TCG Opal usually costs extra).

The ATA command set has a SECURE ERASE command. When invoked it causes the drive to cryptographically securely erase all blocks including any blocks in the reserve and discard lists. MSI's drives might have this but I don't know for sure. Haven't tried it on mine.

I just wanted to give an update.
I did use that hidden Bios feature method and I did find the Intel Software Guards Extension setting and was able to disable it (I Think, it stays disabled in Bios anyhow).
But it did not sort my mouse issue out, however I found out that it was my USB3.0 Usb hub that somehow forced it down in power savings mode.
When connected directly to the laptop the issue seams to be sorted.

It did give me a scare yesterday tho when suddenly I no longer had any soundcard in the laptop, but I soon found out that it most likely was a windows update/ Nahimic driver/program that caused it.

    Hello,

I've received Fujipoly thermal pads + Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut, so yesterday I dissambled my GS65. Everything passed pretty easy: Liquid metal for CPU; repasted GPU with MX-4 because I don't really play a lot + I saw somewhere here that there is no big difference between good thermal paste and liquid metal when it comes about GPU in GS65; replaced all the stock pads with Fujipoly's: used 0.5mm and 1.5mm, in one place I stacked them together because I think I have to get a square piece of 2mm thickness; also I decided to replace thermal paste with 1.5mm pad in the area which I allocated at screenshot below:

Link is here, can't understand why it doesn't show inserted GDrive shared image.
Not my motherboard, made a screenshot from the disassemble video of GS65 to show what I am talking about.

The reason for this was because I thought there is no real difference between thermal paste and good pad + I haven't got well how can I put right amount of paste at this small capacitors and not mess everything around with it :).

The result: I am getting good temperatures for the CPU - 80 is the max I've seen after some stress tests (before all this repaste job even with Throttlestop activated, my laptop was throttling a lot from the very beginning of any test) but the frequency drops from max (3.9) to 3.5-3.7 in 15s after any test I start. The temperature of all cores keeps at 75-78 and I even here that CPU cooler works a bit quiter after frequency drop happens. I think that my idea with using thermal pads instead of thermal paste for those capacitors was completely wrong because of now my CPU heatsink works pretty well but some other parts are getting hot too fast.

Am I right that I have to look for a reason here (just replace thermal pad in yellow area with thermal paste) or this capacitors are not the problem and I ****ed up somewhere else? :)

    Thanks in advance.

I changed the paste with pads there too.
I am getting 75-77 degrees C of the GPU repasted with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut spreading it with the included tool. I think this temperature can be better since it was almost the same before the repaste. The CPU droped from 80-85 while gaming to 70-75 with Kryonaut and the same method of spread.
Those elements are part of the VRM of the GPU and if you are interested go here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrwObTfqv8u1KO7Fgk-FXHQ/featured and there is a video explaining the VRM temps. The TLDR is that before the VRM's overheat the other components will be fried long time ago.
If you are having problems with the GPU temps it can be that some of the pads are too thick and lift up the heatsink leading to not that good contact. I think I have such problem since I have about 10C difference in 3 cores and possibly contact with the GPU. I will repaste it soon again to see if there is change, but probably not this month.

Okey, now I gotcha - that VRM we am talking about is not about CPU but about GPU where I can say I have no problems after repaste and even swtching from paste to pads. Thanks for giving a hint on that.

So, I thought a bit more and I think I found my mistake: here in red I selected something that have to be under thermal paste, isn't it? I think I forgot to anoint it & it has no contact with heatsink :D. Can this cause my problem described two posts behind?

Remember that the people who experience bad things with this laptop, will be more likely to post it in here, than the rest that are happy and pleased with their product. Bear that in mind, when you're considering to buy this laptop, or any other laptop.

BUT IF you experience problems when you choose this laptop, choose to get an RMA straight away - saves you the hassle.

    I experienced exactly the same!

I fixed it by taking all usb devices out of laptop:

    1) Go to device manager, and show all hidden devices

    2) Uninstall everything related to USB drivers / Root Hubs.

    Fixed the problem for me.

Yea thats true. I think if I get one it will be through HIDevo. Just not sure if I’d go liquid metal or the gelid extreme. Im in Canada and I work in the oilfield in camp in the middle of nowhere. RMA would be a major hassle. Sad companys STILL havn’t been able to figure out how to apply proper/quality paste/pads on such an expensive product. Think ill wait.

Just got the Conformal coating liquid, liquid metal paste, 1.0mm thermal pad and mx-4 paste for full full re-paste. Here is the story.

Throttle stop setting CPU and cache -160, IGPU -60, disable BD PROCHOT.
Silent Option 0/20/60/80/90/100 CPU 0/40/60/75/95/110 GPU.
    No Unlock BIOS

Once I have got this new laptop, the cpu can only stay around 33x-35x due to the 90 °C throttling.

After a month of use, Core 5 seems heat faster than other core (around 10 °C to15°C more). Thus, thermal throttling always happen. The laptop use very gentle, no drop or hit.

So, I apply conformal coating liquid to the connector to prevent the damage of LM's spilling, LM on GPU and CPU, repaste and change thermal pad on some of Vcore respectively.

As a result, GPU stress test has -10 °C max, down from 82°C to 72 °C stable. (Stock voltage, no overclocking).but the result get worse on CPU performance. once I run TS bench, core 5 raise to 90 °C instantly.

So, I open it up again, sand the copper cooler on cpu side to make it more even, redo the LM and the result is very impressive. Core 5 temperature issue has been solved. TS bench can run in 39x for 20 seconds then dial back to 36x due to the Power Limit kicks in. Running at 39x, max temperature is around 85 °C. And it stays 76 °C running at 36x constantly.

If the TIM and the application thereof meets the chip makers' requirements then it is "proper" and "quality". MSI's applications meet or exceeds Intel's and nVidia's requirements. Therefore it is "proper" and "quality". And I for one have had no thermal/TIM problems with my GS65 or with the handful of other MSI notebooks I've owned over the years.

So, I am getting something like yours results after my LM mode: upto 30 seconds at 3.9Ghz and temperature upto 90 then frequency falls to 3.5-3.6Ghz and temperature never hits more then 80. In AIDA stress test it says that there is no throttling but I was not getting 3.9Ghz and that was dissapointing me. How can I understand now, I've got good (impossible to get much better result) LM mode and the problem is not about my repaste but about power limit? Can you please confirm this please?

i7-8750H has a 45W designed power limit. As long as the power draw is less than 45 watts it will continue to run as-is indefinitely which it can do on up to 4 cores under sustained full load. If power draw exceeds 45W then the turbo boost timers start ticking. You get the rated 3.9GHz until the timers expire at which point the processor will limit itself to 45W draw which is about 3.5-3.6GHz. This will happen with 5-6 cores under sustained full load.

Temperature has nothing to do with power limit throttling unless you're running a Surface Pro 3, 4 or 2017 which for some reason have a thermal sensor on the case which activates power limit throttling on those devices.

Actually with the MSI, even though -temperatures- have no direct effect, there are *other* things besides exceeding 45W which can cause power limit throttling. Or even the CPU dropping down to 800-1000 mhz, that have absolutely nothing to do with the CPU exceeding 45W.

Note: Power limit throttling can be avoided by changing IMON SLOPE (below 100, which is 1.0x) and IMON OFFSET (negative value)

Sure, but the described behavior, running at 3.9GHz then throttling down to 3.6GHz under sustained load, is consistent with the processor power limiting itself. ThrottleStop or HWMonitor can definitively answer that question.

Do so at your own risk of course.

Hello just wanted some feedback on my Firestrike, and I had some questions regarding my GFX Card and Cinebench..

    https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/28497994

On Cinebench I get OPENGL 55.41 FPS (Way below the 90.22 Avg)

However on CPU I get 1152 (Above average of 979)

Is something wrong with my GPU? Is this normal?
    (GTX1070 Max-Q)
I currently have TS UV to -165 core and cache, repasted with CM Master GelMaker Nano.

EDIT : Added 200 MHz to Clock in MSI Afterburner

I understand the concept of sanding, but what is the procedure to sand this specific heatsink? What kind of papers have you used, how long per sheet? Only cpu part or gpu as well?

I was looking this past month for a really portable gaming machine and the GS65 was at 2nd place in my list.
Ended up getting the new Asus GX501GI with 8750H and GTX1080mq. Long story short, it came DOA, Asus took a hell of a long time to fix/replace it so I ended up with my money back.

In the meantime I got a little Dell Inspiron 15 (7300HQ, GTX1050Ti). It's a big downgrade and no big deal but it's satisfying my needs for the time being.

So I was looking at the GS65 again but would like you guys's help with two things:

-Is the GTX1070 on these models ALWAYS a max-q version? Or is there a full GTX1070 in some SKUs?

-Should I just wait a few more months right now? Maybe 'till xmas for new graphics cards and laptop models? The Dell isn't great but I think it should be enough for a couple of months...

    Thanks!

A full 1070 would not fit. It's always maxq.

Who knows when laptop cards will arrive or which models will fit which chassis?

If you're in no hurry you may as well wait.

I see some GS65s advertised as having a GTX1070 with no reference to max-q. Also read a couple replies here which left me even more doubtful.

But yeah I’ll probably just wait a bit more. I would be pissed if a nice bezeless 17.3” alternative came to market soon after I got the GS65.

Does anyone know if the fingerprint reader that is used in the 259 model, would it work in all models or is the connection on the motherboard different?

Anyone that advertises the GS65 without noting Max-Q, is in error. They are all nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q, or nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060.

I have this exp as well. True Color app is very picky. It only take msi driver only. If u have update uhd630 or nvidia driver, not working. Disable uhd630 and back on, the app is also not working. So my solution is install a clean Windows 10 again.

Anyone have an inside track on specifically what the new 10E BIOS does to "improve system stability". I've been experiencing random hard freeze on my system so I'm hoping it fixes that.

    Hi everyone,

I've just bought a MSI GS65 from Currys PC in the UK but it seems that the video outputs are not working. I've tried:

    1. HDMI output to HDMI monitors (3 different monitors).
    2. Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D (one monitor).
    3. Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort (one monitor).

I've tried with both Linux and Windows and it did not work whatsoever.

I got the laptop on 11th September (3 days ago) and I've only formatted it to reinstall Fedora 29 and Windows.

I saw some people with the same issues in this thread but I'm not sure they've fixed it. Do you think it's disabled somehow? Should I return the machine?

I emailed MSI but if they don't answer back soon I'm planning to return the machine.

It's very unlikely MSI would put RTX 2080 for mobile in this thin laptop, so it'd either be 2070 or 2060, nVIDIA will announce the high end first, so for 2070 or 2060 I'd assume that it'll take a few months before you'll see anything like that.

I don't think there will be laptops with 20xx until 2019 and even then it will be questionable whether there will be "thin and light" laptops with this GPUs. But with TB3 and eGPU 2080 or even 2180 could be nice buy in the future.

I think this is a problem with MSI's terrible ACPI implementation. If you have put the laptop to sleep in linux, (possibly only with another monitor connected, I haven't explored it much) then when it wakes none of the display outputs will ever register as conected again either in Linux or EVEN if you reboot into Windows. (You can see why if you explore their DSDT table).

Anyway the solution is annoying but trivial: Boot into Windows and put the computer to sleep (close the lid), then wake it up. Display outputs magically come alive again whether you reboot into Windows or Linux. Please reply if it solves your problem.

As a point: MSI aren't unique in this regard. It's the x86 architecture itself that is the problem. I've yet to see any ACPI implementation on x86 from any vendor that fully works correctly.

Hey guys as a MSI GS65 owner myself (bought from HID with LM + fuji pads) ive been loving this laptop.
So far ive had no mechanical problems (unsure of whether HID did some tuning) but no creaks, no bends in the chassis anywhere
    and really not much flex!

Im happy to say so far I love it! I primarily use this laptop for school and play occasional fortnite
After undervolting the CPU with TS (and with LM) I can run fortnite on low settings + epic distance at 140-160 FPS and max temps at like 75-77
I havent tried to bench mark it for anything else really since fortnite will be my highest load. (Ive also done a ton of tweaks that Phoenix offers on my own)

Just a few questions I have:
    1) I can't seem to find MSI Silent Option for the new CPU anywhere, can anyone post a link here? Ive read through all 235 pages and didn't see one either.
    2) When using TS should I be setting speed shift to a higher number (when on battery like 180?) and should I disable turbo boost (is that just the check box in TS) for maximum battery life?
    3) I haven't touched my GPU at all in terms of undervolting/overclocking, I got really confused as to what people on the forums are doing, can anyone either explain in a post what I should do or pm it to me?
    4) Does anyone have a battery settings guide for long term battery use (aka not killing my laptop battery capacity so I can keep this laptop for a few years) or are there any recommended windows settings I should use for setting up my battery profile?
    - In terms of battery ive activated HIP/DIMM/DEV sleep and put them to "Lowest" I get about 5-6 hours typing notes, browsing the internet, watching an occasional short video (wondering if I can bring this up to 8)

This thread has been super helpful! and all I can say is I dont regret buying this laptop at all!

PS has anyone found a smaller power brick for this laptop? Can you post a link if you have? Thanks!
PSS Noticed my laptop with TS gets wingrig.dll error, so sometimes when I wake my laptop up from sleep throttle stop will close on its own and it wont let me open it again until I restart my laptop...

You must not have searched hard enough, because entering "MSI SIlent Option Skylake" into Google and the VERY FIRST link pointed right to it.
It took me 5 seconds to search for it.

In his defense, the MSI GS65 has a Coffee Lake processor, so why would he search for Skylake or even assume that one actually named with a previous processor name would work for his laptop? (I know it works for both, but it's not necessarily evident to most people)

    Silent Options ( .3101 version)

Battery life: Speed Shift to 255, disable turbo boost.

And you can clock it down even further in battery options, set maximum processor state 50% (CPU will run at 1.1 GHz with speed shift set to 255 and Max proc. State @50%)

I have yet to run the device from 100% to 0% battery. (Thinking about paying the $20+ for the PCMark8 key to run the work benchmark on loop in order to measure battery life with current settings)

    GPU tweak: by MrFox

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...rvolting-overclocking-and-overvolting.817033/

I personally tweaked my MSI Afterburner to +210 Core Clock and +300 memory clock. The most stable I have been able to get which nets me the highest firestrike score.

    Hi guys,

    Interesting thing here...

Look at my current Turbo multiplier for Batteries :D I got past the point where the lowest Turbo is forced to x22, together with the re-enabled Parking feature and the SpeedShift feature, the Turbo boost is running as the initial concept that Intel brought up, shutdown unused cores for higher MHz. Now, the lowest Multiplier I can set is x8, my GS65 is not limited to MSI's x11 anymore.

    Flexible Multiplier.PNG

And another kudos... the C-state configuration is unlocked in ThrottleStop on my GS65. I can change the C-state directly through ThrottleStop now...

    C-state unlocked in Windows.PNG

I'll see if I can write up a tutorial on how to achieve this in the coming week, and YES it requires a key combination for unlocking the BIOS to gain access to it, please search in the forum for the combination as I'm not allowed to post it publicly.

As for the reason that the System Agent is +0.0850 on my GS65, it is because I overclocked my RAM from 2400MHz to 2933MHz, needed to increase System Agent's voltage to stabilize the memory controller.

Awesome thanks a lot! Do I just set my min and max to like 180 if I want speedshift there?
Should I untick speedstep/C1E for either battery profile or plugged in?
Also do you know if this is a discussed error, where throttlestop will close when you wake the laptop from sleep? I cant open TS again until I restart the laptop, I get a wigring.dll error

Has anyone fixed the DSDT on this laptop? Couple of issues with hardblocking wifi and hdmi port usablilty after suspend on linux. I know it's a gamng laptop, but it could be so much more and MSI could clean up with developers needing high performance alternative to a MacBook, a la Dell Project Sputnik.... surely no more than a day or two of a competent engineer's time.

As far as speedshift yes, that is fine. Not sure about unticking the others, mine are ticked on, on both settings.
My TS has no problems waking from sleep. Perhaps redownload, I use version ThrottleStop 860.
