Greetings all, proud owner of new GS65 here and was wondering if it's possible to clean the keyboard to remove debris or anything else that might have gotten under the keys?
All disassembly videos only show taking the motherboard out, what happens if your keys are malfunctioning and needs replacing?

    Thanks.

I have already done that by "coincidence". I had to restart my computer, and i chose not to have dragon center, and go for silent option. I did not reinstall with MSI's factory image.
So that whine is not coming from there.

I only hear it when the fans are on, which ofc. indicates it's coil whine. The question is how much is too much, and if i should RMA it. I really need a good reason to RMA, since it will probably take 2 weeks for them to fix, and i use it all day, every day.

Probably an RMA, since this laptop screen is pretty well sealed from my experience. I couldn't see how it would get in there without being a factory mistake, unless u live in the sahara :).

In regards to core temperature differentials, I get about 14 to 18 degrees in Cores 0 and 3. Should I bother trying to repaste this? Does it often get better?

Right now I set it to CPU and Cache undervolt of 200.00 with FIVR on 34 @ 6 cores

Does the MSI logo appear on boot? Is the laptop on, just no display? If that's the case you could try and reset the bios to default, without a display, a few pages back there are instructions, its like RIGHT arrow 4 times, down.... enter, F10, etc.... ( The person who posted lost display but he was in the BIOS, just blindly had to press buttons and work his way to reset to default options)

Hold the power button down for 45 seconds, then release and power on again and then wait.

Hi, I am facing some strange issues with my gs65 8RE. Few of its backlit keys are not lighting up in green color. Red and Blue primary colors are working fine but green is not working due to which various colors like yellow, white etc. have stopped appearing. In default, Gold configuration keys are lighting up in red. i contacted official forum where I was told to update BIOS, EC and Steel Series which I did but nothing changed. Also with every passing day more and more keys are getting affected. Please Help.

Okay so the -200 uv cost BSOD finally. Been playing with it for a couple hours, I think I found the right settings. LMK if there are any suggestions. Sadly had to set the multiplier to 35x, 36x would cause Thermal Throttle on Prime95.

If you tried the followings already and still no work:

It means the CPU seems to crash itself upon BIOS boot because of too low voltage that caused the CPU to become unable to operate. You can try to call MSI and ask if there's any key combinations that reverts BIOS back to default settings, but I doubt it would work because it's crash on BIOS boot, so the BIOS didn't even get loaded.

What might really work is that you open your laptop and unplug the motherboard battery and wait a minute or 2 for the CMOS to fully lost its current settings and plug back in and reassemble again plug in and press power button to boot. This will likely work. For the disassembly guide, you can find on the internet.

Please, for future note, always try undervolt with ThrottleStop first before trying it in the BIOS.

Can a GS65 owner please tell me the full list of supported resolutions and refresh rates? i.e., go into display settings in Win10 and find and hit the "List All Modes" button and paste the result here. I'm a heavy user of emulators of classic video game consoles and computers, so I need both 50Hz and 60Hz refresh rates (for accurately emulating PAL and NTSC systems, respectively, with V-sync enabled). I also sometimes need to use a laptop for driving a projector for outdoor movies, so a native 24Hz or 48Hz refresh rate is also a must-have to avoid ugly judder.

I've been unable to find any clear published specs about this, but I have to ask b/c my current laptop (Lenovo IdeaPad U530 Touch w/ nVidia GT 730M w/ optimus) is locked at the BIOS level to 48Hz or 60Hz refresh rates, so I can't emulate PAL systems with VSync enabled on it, which sucks.

I removed the cmos battery, after 5 mins or so i put it back again and reassembled it, didnt work.
I removed the cmos battery again , removed the main battery and pluged in the adapter(charger) and without plugging the cmos battery ,it yeilded the same results( loop restart after 1 sec , then after 20 secs or so , then i get red orangish light same color as when the gtx 1070 is in use indicator color near the power button, and white light near on the f5 button.)
I have also noticed that the fans dont spin and both the gpu and cpu heatsink gets warm after some time.
    No audio (beeps) and display.

You will most likely have to RMA it - looks like a hardware defect.

To be sure green diode isn't working change the light color in SteelSeries Engine to pure green (0,255,0) and post a picture of it.

Ok, I did it and the green diode is not lighting as expected, but the bigger problem is that this is spreading. Once in every two days, I see another key having the same problem. Here's the photo when set to only green. [IMG]

hey fellas, just got a GS65 delivered from Amazon, seems like a nice machine so far. however the storage is woefully inadequate for my video editing needs so i intend to upgrade soon. my understanding is that one SSD slot supports both SATA and NVME and the other only supports NVME. can y'all tell me if this plan is accurate:

    -purchase a 1-2TB SATA M.2 2280 SSD
    -open the computer up
-move the 256GB NVME into the other slot
-install the new SATA into the original slot

correct? and Windows will still be able to boot from the original drive no problem despite it being changed to the other slot, yes?

I bought the Best Buy version and just left the 512gb sata drive in the main slot and added a 1tb Samsung evo nvme into the 2nd. Everything seems to be running great.

I am interested in running 4K at 60 hz on my monitor. Will the GS65 be able to handle that or do I need an eGPU and graphic card added? If so, can anyone recommend a good combination that works? I would also like to use the eGPU as a thunderbolt hub. I tried the 1080 gaming box and had problems trying to switch back to internal graphics when I disconnected the box. Even after a reboot, my system would not find the internal card.

Any video editors running into problems with Premiere Pro not working with the dGpu? For some reason it will not even load up for me until I disable the Nvidia card and restart the program.

There may be no need to move your PCIe, depending on what slot it is in. The slots are labeled, so you would only have to move it if it is installed in the Combo slot.

To help with your project, see this teardown video

    Hey friends.
I noticed a bend above the power button. The entire top feel like its caving in.
Also, I see a bend below the hinge, above the holes where the DynaAudio imprint is.

I'm curious if anyone is experiencing bends similar to mine?

Hello - I'm new here and also picked up a GS65 from Best Buy recently. I've been messing around with undervolting and so far things look pretty solid at -165mw. That greatly reduced my CPU throttling...doesn't even really do it anymore.

My only issue is getting more out of the Max-Q 1070. I opened up Afterburner, did Ctrl-F, pressed L at 825mV and 1600MHz and flattened the curve completely from this point, all the way to the right.

When I load up Valley or Heaven Benchmark, I see in the top right that it looks like 1600Mhz is locked in no problem, but through Afterburner monitoring (that I have on the left side of the screen) I'm seeing Mhz speeds fluctuate constantly...going from ~1100 to ~1300 or so....but never does it ever hit 1600Mhz (what I set in Afterburner). I basically set the point on the graphic, overclocked, but locked the voltage. What am I doing wrong here? Why does my 1070 not ever hit 1600 or stay consistent? I have "Prefer Maximum Performance" selected in the NVIDIA control panel.

    ????

You’ll never hit 1600 consistently. You’ll fluctuate between 1300-1544 depending on the demand of the game.
I suggest you overclock the GPU +150 to 200 then flatten your curve from there.
The 1070 Max Q only goes up to 800mV. By doing the above actions, you’re overclocking the GPU at the lower voltage settings.
Personally, I’m at +168 core then flatten out, and +400 on memory.

Hey thanks for responding. I'll give it a shot. I've been in the AMD camp for a while, a little rusty with NVIDIA's newer stuff. I'll update this post when I figure it out using your method.

EDIT: Okay, so it looks like the max it will go now is 1657 MHz and I locked it right at 800mV since that's all I've got to play with anyway with the GS65. So now I should see...depending on the game....my GPU hit 1657Mhz MAX when the time calls for it? Also, just my locking it at 800mV my temps dropped from 72c to 67c - not bad!

EDIT 2: A little confused, I just ran the demanding benchmark from Uniengine called Superposition Benchmark - and it looked awfully demanding. I rand it at 1920x1080 Extreme setting and was getting some 20FPS on average, but not once did the card boost up to 1657MHz. It stayed...fluctuating around 1010 - 1300MHz or so......why?

That's superposition for ya lol. I get 20FPS-ish too.
If your scores are HIGHER than stock, I wouldn’t worry about it.
Nvidia started using GPU boost to adjust clocks on the fly depending on temperature and utilization. Don’t worry about if your clocks are sticking. Just be happy that you’re getting higher scores.

    Not that I know of.
I understand you want to see that consistent 1544 or whatever overclock you set yourself up to. But overclocking is different now. Gone is the old way of doing it, achieving that MAX clock speed. Now, when we overclock, we’re more so driving up our MINIMUM speeds with some peaks at max.
As long as your gpu can peak at whatever max overclock you set it too, you’re good. Don’t worry about the clock speed too much, just look at real world performance.
Does it give more FPS or a higher score than stock? If yes, you’re golden.
    Enjoy the laptop dude.

Btw. If you drop your max CPU speed to 3.5 and apply an undervolt at that speed, you’ll reduce temps by a good amount. My peak now it 70c at 3.5ghz. And I lose virtually no FPS in games.

It is because the TDP target of the GTX1070 Max-Q in the GS65 is 80W and it is easily reached, once the TDP target is reached it'll undervolt itself which also throttles the core clock to match with the TDP.

If you download HWINFO64, scroll down to the GPU section, fire up an intensive game and pay close attention to the GPU Power, you'll find that it fluctuates between 72W~95W, but mostly stay between 72W~80W, 81W~95W only appears as spikes.

But on a normal GTX 1070 the TDP target is 115W, so you'll likely see the voltage goes up to 0.85V or above, which means higher core frequency, but also means more heat.

So unless you have access to modifying the TDP, there's nothing you can do.

    Peace out.

I understand about the GPU speeds now....yes very different. I've been out of that game for a while now.

As for dropping the CPU speed, would I have to use another program instead of XTU? I read you can change the multipliers too, as in get all cores to run the same speed while enjoying an undervolt on the CPU. Is that possible?

I've considered getting some pads for the underside of mine's mainboard on the two connected squares bracket (underside of the heat sink retention assembly). Maybe I'll stop by Microcenter on the way home from work today.

Yes. Use throttlestop and uninstall XTU. TS has more functionality and allows you to have multiple automatic profiles. You just need to configure them.
For example, when I turn on my laptop, profile 1 is used for maximum performance. When I unplug my charger, it automatically switches to battery mode to save power.

No problem at all, I did the same thing. Remember to boot with Ac adapter plugged in after that, otherwise the PC won't power up at all.

My buddy is looking for a power cord for his laptop. Where is the best place to find it?

Just the power line cord? Any 3-prong "Mickey Mouse" cord will do. Like this one:
