Cant seem to find it in this thread, really considering opening a new laptop because of it. Apart from it I love it.

I didn't see the original upload on the 6th because I didn't get the alert from Youtube. They are toggling off the alert bell on random channels for everyone, I am constantly needing to turn them back on - Lisa's channel had the alert cleared, I just turned it back on.
Note: If you click on the Bell of a disabled alert channel and it won't come up - dialog opens then disappears - unsubscribe and then resubscribe and then set the alert level.
When I went to post the video I found I searched for the Youtube ID (of the copycat video) and didn't find a hit - your original post had a different Youtube ID so of course it didn't show up in my search.Last edited: Jun 11, 2018 -
Well folks,
I thought I would post on this forum to let people note of a horrific experience that I had with ibuypower.com and MSI. I purchase the latest MSI GS65 with all the latest components, 32 GB RAM, 1070GTX QMax, 1 x 1TB Samsung PRO and 1 x 1TB Samsung EVO. Got the extended warranty as you do the math not a cheap piece of hardware.
Well used it for 1 1/2 days, and then I just got the MSI logo and that was it. Nothing else worked, I even tried the battery reset. I contact ibuypower and the tech wanted me to open it up and said the RAM might have moved. I said no way it is under warranty. I RMA'd back to ibuypower, got the run around from their service department. Finally, after 1 week with them, they said that it is a motherboard problem and that they don't know when it would get fixed from MSI. Normally, they said 2 weeks or more MSI usually takes and not sure if that is from when MSI gets it. I said, "can I get the replacement". They said "sure", place an order and we can speed ship it to you. I am traveling overseas for work the whole reason I got it so it is going to be tight deadlines. But here is the kicker, I would be paying for a new laptop and would not get refunded on the old until MSI sent it back to them. So, I would be in the hole for nearly $10K.
I said "no, thank you" and I would like a refund. I don't know when I will get that back. Better be soon or I will file with the BBB.
So, caution to buyers out there. Stay away from ibuypower.com and MSI whilst the product may look good their customer service is horrendous.
-SGTGunner.
PS -- If any supplier could make the order and ship by the end of the week, happy to chat. Other than ibuypower of course. Then please message me.ctrlbrk likes this. -
Also, if you do this definitely get the extra insurance coverage on the shipment to them, and have a signature required - ask ibuypower if that works for them - and they need to refund / credit you the return shipping costs.
The stuck at BIOS - MSI Shield - could also be a reset BIOS defaults, causing your boot device to no longer show up in the boot order. You can enter the BIOS and select the boot device, and try booting again. -
Thanks. No, I don't think they were going to put hold, they wanted to process it as payment. I asked them. I did get the extra insurance, they paid for the shipping costs when I RMA'd it to them.
If you mean will they refund the original shipping costs, not sure on that.
As for the BIOS - MSI shield, I could not even get into the BIOS, it wasn't even booting. MSI confirmed with ibuypower which then, in turn, told me they were replacing the motherboard. So, I think it is more than just a misconfigured BIOS.
Thanks for the response. I will continue to lick my wounds on this MSI/Ibuypower experience.hmscott likes this. -
Just checking back in since its been a while since I bought mine. Still real happy with it. Brought it on a business trip and the only comments were how nice it looked, fit in fine in an office setting. I did plenty of gaming back at the hotel and its been a champ for me playing all my games . The biggest thing I am happy about is the low weight much more enjoyable for travel than my old big laptops. Only thing I wish was different on the laptop was the motherboard not being upside down. I did take mine apart and upgrade the ram and add an extra hdd but would be nice if it was a quicker process.
Also I appreciate the posts from hmscott and others. I think its good advice, I bought mine from best buy and did an -140 under volt and just leave the fans on auto and no complaints. I don't stress test and I am sure there is some throttling but honestly nothing I notice in any of my games they all running great.
I am still mainly playing Quake Champions, Divinity OS 2 and just got Bless online.hmscott likes this. -
Wow SGTGunner, that sucks. Definitely did the right thing.
And it's not a "cross ship" because they already had your original in their hands, so you are absolutely correct....
I'm sorry you had a bad experience. But my GS65 has been great so far, through a few trips, and I'm very happy. I bought through HID but it did take them a week or so to ship because of my upgrades.
Make sure you have some or most of this documented in writing somewhere, and if another week goes by without a refund, I would certainly issue a chargeback with your credit card to protect yourself.
I hope you find what you are looking for, and am glad you are giving MSI another chance. I hope they don't get it wrong again! -
I found something that could be a problem, whenever I do the followings:
Unplug power cable -> Sleep -> Wake again on Battery -> Plug in -> Fire up a game
I found the GTX 1070 is stuck at Core 1101MHz / Memory 405MHz plugged in.
And it won't go higher unless I restart the system.
Even setting the Power profile in Nvidia panel to Prefer Maximum performance won't work.
Using 398.11, revert back to 390.94 and it's still the same.
Using E16Q2IMS.10B for BIOS and 105 for EC.
Is anyone seeing the same? -
-
Well, update. I went to BestBuy and got an MSI GS65. Though it was only with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. I will upgrade those at a later date.
Thanks to all the support on this forum, it is much appreciated! If I don't get paid back in a week, then yes I will issue a chargeback and I have got all the paperwork, including the dreaded RMA tech conversation in writing too.
Cheers!hmscott likes this. -
Ah, I didn't catch that, ibuypower already accepted possession of your laptop through your RMA return, and ibuypower had sent it to MSI for repair - and wanted you to take responsibility for the return from MSI and not refund you or cover the cost of the new laptop to swap you until they got it back from MSI - that's incredibly lame!!
The nice thing about BestBuy is that you can walk in and pick one up - just call around to find the location that has them in stock, and drive in and get it. If you don't like it, return it.
Nothing beats being within driving distance of your retailer, brick and mortar forever!!
Waiting for shipping, returning via shipping, and all the phone calls and emails in between are a PITA.
Much better to work face to face with the retailer that's local and support your local economy!
Please let us know how it works out with the new GS65, and congratulations on your new laptop!Last edited: Jun 12, 2018sk3tch likes this. -

Okay, what is the best way to backup a MSI laptop with the restore partition, etc. Also, it came with Win10 home edition and I am going to go to Pro as I need virtualization.
If there a special MSI tool that can create the partition and all the necessary drivers. I bought a USB stick to create a restore disk too. Not sure the best way to get all the MSI related stuff. I know how to create a Win 10 bootable USB, but nothing else.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers! -
I also use Macrium Reflect Free to do image backups of the OS drive after configuring it how I like, so I can restore from it's 4GB Boot recovery drive (with image on another external USB drive) instead of going all the way back to the original out of the box OS Image.
The MSI BurnRecovery 32GB USB 3.0 flash recovery drive with the out of the box OS image is a good thing to keep for RMA, sanity check (is the problem in a new OS update, hardware, or what?), and eventual sale to someone else.raz8020, SGTGunner and Kevin@GenTechPC like this. -
So my machine's been great. Well, until today, when I went to go tweak my fan curve and noticed that Dragon Center just **** itself. The application won't launch and I didn't feel like digging deep into procmon to get a fat trace of everything running on the system. However, I looked at Task Manager and noticed that the .exe doesn't stay open.
I uninstalled Dragon Center and reinstalled the latest version from MSI's site. No change. Anyone run into this before? (I'm running W10 Pro). If not, can anyone recommend something that will handle both the CPU and GPU fan settings on this model? -

Hi everyone,
I've had this laptop for over a months and just want to check with other owners to see if they have similar experience and how they have dealt with some of the issues. A bit of background, the one game I play is overwatch so I've only tested the performance on overwatch. My unit only includes a single 16gb 2400 DDR4, rather than dual channel 2x8gb. I've updated to the latest bios, Nvidia graphics driver. Below I'll list the issues I have experienced and how I dealt with it.
- Thermal throttling: Undervolt the CPU by -0.2v. I've used both XTU and Throttlestop, XTU seems to have problems keeping the voltage offset and the default profile seems stuffed. Switched to throttle stop and working well so far. My CPU runs well at -0.2v and experience very rare thermal throttle, temp while gaming typically around 75 degree celsius.
- Overwatch gaming performance. The FPS appears to top out round 200FPS, typically around 160, when using an external monitor (I have a 240hz BenQ monitor). Others have reported much better performance than this, I have tried numerous setting tweaks but the laptop just won't output anything higher. I suspect it's the fact that my unit has a single channel ram, as some other users have pointed out, based on some review of the game that Overwatch performance improves greatly with dual channel ram. Can anyone else with the dual channel ram share their experience with Overwatch gaming? I'm considering whether it's worthwhile adding an extra ram given the difficulties in getting into this laptop.
- Gaming on battery: For some reason, the laptop won't go over 30FPS while on battery. I have tried change battery power plan to performance, adjusted Nvidia control panel to use the highest performance and dedicated GTX card, change the profile setting to performance (yes I've read that Dragon center is bad), but nothing works. My friend on Gigabyte Aero 15 (same spec except he was able to add additional ram easily) has no problem output high FPS on battery. Can anyone share their experience of gaming on battery? Is there something that MSI did to restrict the performance while on battery? I've read somewhere that battery can't provide enough power for the GTX, but that doesn't explain how Aero15 did it and also how can they market this as gaming laptop if it can't play on battery at high performance (ignore battery life is short).
- Power Limit throttle: I get the occasional PL2 throttle, but when looking at the log it seems the package power it uses its only about 30w while gaming and nowhere near the 90w or 45w limit. Could this also be the reason that the FPS is low? Can anyone share the package power their system uses and how to increase it?
- Audio, mic volume low. This appears to be some windows 10 issues. My mic volume was extremely low whether it's the using bluetooth, audto jack or USB connection. Update to the latest realtek driver available on MSI website (not realtek website) appears to have fixed it. I still have to boost by 10db to make it more clear.

thats what I got back form support. I guess specifically no support for 2666 ddr 32gb. tried 16 and it works at 2666. Gotta wait for a update I guess.... for 32gb. -
Low audio: I had an issue with the new Audio toggle and the old Audio Mixer; while according to Audio Toggle the volume was 100% , in the Mixer I found that, after April Update, the volume was not 100% despite Windows 10 Audio Toggle continued to show the slider at 100% -
However, it did not work
.
After uninstalling SCM / Truecolor / Dragon center 2 and restart the system multiple times.
The GPU is still stuck at Core 1101MHz / Mem 405MHz when resumed from Sleep (Plugged in after resumed).
But if it enters sleep mode plugged in and resume, it won't get stuck.
However if I unplug the cable, enter sleep mode on battery, resume and plug in the cable again, it gets stuck every single time I do this.
And the throttle reason shown on GPU-Z says thermal throttle and it's at 54C, huh!?
Could anyone verify this on their GS65 please?
I'm starting to think I got a faulty machine. -

Save, exit, then check your system.
If THAT doesn't work, power off and hold down the power button for *60* seconds then release.
then wait for the boot loops and then go to windows and check.
If THAT doesn't work, PM me. -
BAD DAY TODAY!
I opened up my GS 65 today to install a second m.2 and upgrade Ram. While I was in there I also repasted with LM. After putting it all together, the Power Button is dead. I reopened it 4 more times since, checking everything, checking if LM had spilled, everything...
it is all clean, cables are all connected up - th thing is just dead.
Guess noone had a similar issue, yet? Power button doing nothing? -
I disabled SpeedStep and enabled Speedshift in the BIOS,
I've tested 3 times, it does get the GPU stuck at Core 1101MHz / Mem 405MHz resumed from Battery and plug in to play games everytime I turn off the SpeedStep and use only Speedshift.
But as soon as I turn on SpeedStep again in the BIOS, it doesn't get stuck.
This is very strange as the Intel CPU setting is messing with GTX1070's clock rate.ixixmmx and Falkentyne like this. -

The first time I tried to boot I had actually forgot to plug the battery back in. So ONLY the Power adapter. No Luck! Just had it open again. There is nothing I can see. All cables are correctly placed, including the Power Button Cable! No leakage Whatsoever on the LM (but I did insulate with Scotch super 33+ to be safe).
Battery and Power cable connected, nothing, nothing lighting up even for a second. Like the Power Button was just not working. -

Did you have to physically remove the motherboard to do your upgrade? Did you have to remove several ribbon or other cables?
If you did, are you sure you connected the power connector securely to the mainboard? I don't know that mainboard nor the schematic.
But the power button being 'dead' means something is physically disconnected. Please check the connections to the keyboard/case chassis AND to the motherboard. Pretty much all I can say. -
The ribbon cable that connects the power button to the motherboard is on the opposite side of most the other connectors (near the top/screen end of motherboard rather than toward the battery). It's also tiny- make sure you reconnected it, it's easy to forget.

1. RAM chips - re-seat them. I once didn't seat them as tight/deep as possible and machine didn't come up at all
2. Check all ribbons again to verify if they are properly seated. The assembly folks drew a solid thick black line across the ribbon for you to see. When you insert the ribbon, you can visually check if the black line stroke meet the connector, or there are ribbon color showing.
3. Check your AC adapter and it's plugs. I had OEM AC adapter gone dark on me before. If you have another AC adapter/laptop with 5.5/2.5mm barrel, then that would be a easy verification.
4. If all fails, take out your RAM and M.2 upgrades and see if the system starts up. -
Thanks for the tips!
Did all of those. Upgrades are out. No Luck.

Power Plug is on the Mainboard, so I wouldn't have missed that! Also, if I plug the power in, and the Lid is closed... the front LED lights up. If I open the lid.. the LED goes off. There is a mircoswitch close to USB port on the power plug side. It seems this would sit flush to the backCover. No Idea what that is for. In general, I can't find any missing connection. Power is obviously coming into the Mainboard... it is just not turning on! -
-
How do I reset NVRAM?
Put it all back together.. NOTHING. If the Betery is in, the LED does not turn on when I plug the power. Is that normal? If I disconnect the Battery it goes on! -

Check the case cover to make sure there is no 'hole' in the case where that button is, e.g. a "paper clip hole" for pressing it
If there IS a hole, then that is the EC Reset button and is useless.
If there is *NOT* a hole in the chassis above that button, try pressing that. Usually such buttons are an "INTERNAL" Power button for power on while engineers service the laptop. BE VERY CAREFUL if trying that with the case open !Donald@Paladin44 likes this.
