There isn't that big of a difference between the 8th Gen and the 9th Gen model. I was referring to the different GPUs. 2070 vs. 2080. I was just trying to point out that even if you spend that much more money on a better GPU, it's possible to run into the same CPU limit.

Anyway. All that doesn't have to be correct. If the 2080 performs that much better in game benchmarks and synthetic benchmarks, go for it.

I'm very happy with my 9th Gen 2070 model. The screen is big enough and has nice colours and the advanced BIOS lets you take control of many CPU and RAM settings, so you can push it as far as possible. (4GHz & 2933MHz RAM)

Maybe someone can explain how a better GPU would make a difference when I'm noticing that the 2070 is not pushed to the limit and hangs around 85-90% load. Should be at least 95%.

    Hello
I got my hands on the 9sf version of this laptop a few days ago and tried some undervolting. I'm using throttlestop and hardware monitor to check that it took the undervolt. I've gone as far as a full volt undervolt on the core (staying at -.125 on the cache) and it seems to mostly run stable at this. War Thunder and the Witcher 3 ran fine (as far as I could tell) but Monster Hunter World crashed after a single mission. Am I doing something wrong or is this just a really lucky undervolt?
And is nvidia optimus enabled by default or do I have to enable that on my own?
    Thanks!

    Optimus is enabled by default.

You can use MSI Afterburner to monitor your CPU clocks during gaming but be advised that Afterburner will take control of your GPU overclock while the program is running.

But you tried Monster Hunter before without undervolting and it worked?

Try raising the voltage in small steps and check stability and if core clocks drop significantly.

Did you follow any guide on youtube or in this forum?

Undervolted CPU Cache too or only CPU Core?

Could it be that you're hitting an frame cap/limit? Or is vsync on? Or are you playing simple games that aren't requiring the full GPU power? Or maybe games not very optimized?

Those are a few reasons that I can think of that can cause less than full GPU usage.

Can you give some example games that you play? I can run my cpu at 3Ghz or 3.9 and not see any FPS improvement, yet if I over clock my GPU the FPS goes up. That tells me that all of my games are GPU limited and not CPU bound. Also while I haven't checked every game, the few times I have ran HWinfo64 when playing I see it hits full GPU load so I feel like it's fully utilized.

I use Afterburner with Riva to monitor performance. I don't know if the dragon center is interfering or not but with a -1000mv undervolt the laptop seems to be stable except for monster hunter so far. At this undervolt with Speed Shift set to 0 it is able to sustain 3.988Ghz in every situation hence I'm not sure what actually caused the crash. There doesn't seem to be a huge improvement to temps compared to a -500mv undervolt so I have it set to that right now for stability and will mess with it later. I'm not following a guide for now since I haven't seen one for undervolted a whole -1000mv

Afterburner tells me that I'm running into the GPU Power Limit.

In BF1 (low graphics) I get around 100fps. CPU load 60-80%. GPU load 50-60%. CPU and GPU temps around 75 C.

The Power Limit graph is constantly jumping from 0 to 1.

In AC Odyssey (High graphics) the Power Limit graph is constantly on 1 but at least i get 95% GPU usage in open terrain. In the city the CPU limit kicks in and GPU load drops to 75%. So no problem on that front. In every other game I play I run into the V-Sync limit.

Bit weird about BF1 but not a problem.

(Using Nvidia Driver from MSI. No Dragon Center.)

Hey everyone what do you think is the fastest ram I can expect to run after unlocking the bios on the 9sf?

And been running around trying to find the sweet spot for the GPU but it's freaking hard , some games will boost to 2050 and some won't go over 1650 due to power limit, so is there a way to pump some extra power to that GPU?

Here is a run I did with +165 on the core and +1500 on the memory ( https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/37718857? )

Hey guys, after some time I'am looking for a new machine. Currently, I'am using Clevo P751ZM with 980m so my next laptop should also be something that is not generating to much heat. I decided i wanted something with better build quality (nothing broke in my clevo except for exchanging keyboard once), you know, sturdy, metal chassis etc. My first thoughts were something like Razer 15 or MSI GS65 or GS75 but after I got into reviews and user lounges I noticed that they are hot and/or have quality control problems. My Clevo was very good machine in its time but I realized I didn't need all that power I got from it, I mainly play MMORPG's, and they don't need so much power. In this mindset I started looking at business class laptops (as GTX 1650 could still work, or I think it could ;)) but from what I've seen they also have cooling problems and some other flaws in distinctive models. So I looked back and found the Raider "class". They have decent cooling and good build quality. I wanted to ask if it is worth to get it with RTX 2060? I wish I could have changed the CPU to some powerful i5 to decrease temperatures even more. How decent is cooling in this model from your point of view? I do like to use laptop on my lap so too much heat will be annoying...

New bios is out, has any tried it?

    1. Update CPU Microcode version for Intel-SA-00233 (it's called Zombieload, MDS).
    2. add the "Acoustic Noise Mitigation" setting in BIOS

It does run a little hot stock and is loud to some (quiter than the razer blade 15 advanced that i tried and by far quieter than the new asus gx502).

If you'r willing to do some undervolting you can drop the heat a few degrees (effects vary depending on workload). I personally dropped the 6 core turbo from 4Ghz to 3.6Ghz. As far as I can tell It only cost me a few frames but dropped temps by another 5 to 7 degrees. Playing war thunder with these settings ran the cpu at 61 to 65 degrees with the gpu around 71 to 74. More intensive games still run in the low 80s to low 90s (at least for me).
Surface temps are good though. The keyboard stays cool enough while under load so your fingers won't get uncomfortable quickly

If you're willing to buy either the ge75 or ge65 from a place like hidevolution than you can get them to repaste the laptop with better thermal paste or liquid metal which accord to a review from bob of all trades on youtube, was very effective on the ge75 9sf as well as the 9sg. And if you want thunderbolt 3 you might want to consider the ge65 (I don't think the ge75 has thunderbolt 3, correct me if I'm wrong).

I read somewhere it does but I guess it doesn't after all. I really wish more laptops around the $2000 range had thunderbolt 3 standard. It's not the end of the world with how many port the ge75 has but it would be nice

The new BIOS update is a security patch. However after flashing to it my undervolt became unstable, I had to reduce it. Overall I would say I lost about 3-4% performance.

50w is not bad for a 45w cpu, especially since it doesn't look like it was given much load since temp maxed out at 73. I don't remember how high it can go in short term, but I think it I've seen 60+w over very short times when pushed hard.

Hi everyone, I bought this after having an Asus G751-JT for the last 4.5 years. Got the Micro Center version with 9750h/2070/1TB SSD for $1899.

My old Asus ran really quiet as I had given it a repaste and the chassis is just much bigger than this MSI. On the MSI out of the box I was getting 97 on some cores playing CS GO with the fans blasting loudly. I undervolted while on an external monitor all the way up to -150mV and ran cinebench r20 and everything seemed better with temps staying similar but the fans running much quieter. I then unplugged the external monitor and began to have stability issues which at first I didn’t think were due to the undervolt but eventually when I brought down the -150mV the issues went away. I had 2 blue screens – TDR video failure and some whea uncorrectable something. Any idea why on the external monitor it handled a bigger undervolt? Everything seems stable now at -125mV and I could probably go closer to -150 but if I specifically put -150 I start to have screen flickering.

My main issue with this laptop is loud electrical noise. With throttlestop on performance mode this laptop will make the loudest electrical noise I have ever heard. This will occur while just reading a web page to the point where I can’t focus on what I am reading and want to chuck it out of the window. If I unplug it the noise stops. If I put it on battery setting on throttlestop the noise stops. If I add speedshift higher than 0 it stops. Can someone help me understand what is going on here? Should I return this laptop? I have a 15 day return window with MC.

The other smaller issue I have is when I unplug the mouse my touchpad doesn’t work even though it is on in control panel……

-125mV on benchmarks. Couldn’t get TimeSpy to run as it kept giving an oops error occurred.

    cinebenchR20 auto fans – 2874

    cinebenchR20 coolerboost fans – 2919

    firestrike auto fans – 17,430

    firestrike coolerboost - 17,507

The specs for this laptop say it’s got DisplayPort 1.2, which if true is a real shame since it’s the one laptop that isn’t a huge brick that may be able to power Next gen displays like 4k (over 60hz) or VR (eg new HP Reverb is 2x 2160x2160 at 90fps). The latter requires DisplayPort 1.3 or higher and so I thought I couldn’t consider this laptop until I read from a few people using it with the GE75 raiders just fine at 90fps. I also saw a benchmark where they were measure >60 FPS on 4k monitors with the Raider. I did some research and it seems the 2080 and 2070 GPUs already have DP 1.4 support. But the MSI rep said it was DisplayPort 1.2 on these machines. I really want to get this machine but need to be able to support next gen VR bandwidths - if this were truly 1.4 it would be more than enough.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

My timespy and my shadow of the tomb raider started crashing recently as well. thought it was graphics card/driver related or steam install related.

after checking out events log, its nahimcosd.dll causing the crashes. disabled nahimic in services resolved the issue. But this means turning off nahimic. it was the same audio and nahamic drivers all along since i first got my gs75. something broke it.

this also happened on my aero 15 oled which has nahmic as well.

I have a question. I have a 144hz 1080p monitor with freesync and i need a mini displayport cable to connect it to my laptop (ge75 8sf). I have been looking to buy a mini displayport to displayport cable but i have also seen some mini displayport to displayport adapters.

My question is, if these adapters will let me use freesync on my monitor or will they impact the bandwith of the displayport cable?

For the record, i am curious because the adaptars are cheaper and they seem to be easier to get, plus i already have a normal displayport cable laying around so i could use that with the adapter.

I updated to the newest bios with "acoustic noise mitigation" and that made these buzzing electrical noises quieter but didn't resolve the issue. What did resolve it was disabling c states in bios. Does anyone know if disabling c states does anything negative to performance or anything else? The issue appears to be if the cpu doesn't actually have much to do but it is set to keep 100% performance it creates this buzzing electrical noise issue.

Anyone have any idea if this is an issue with the 9750h in general or just in this laptop? Did I get a bad laptop? The "acoustic noise mitigation" in bios specifically mentions on certain SKU's and deep c states. Anyone else with a 9750h version of this have buzzing noises that are VERY noticeable?? Still trying to figure out if I should return this and if I do for an exchange or different laptop altogether...

    Thanks!

Hey guys, I'am slowly looking for a new laptop and my eyes are also on the GE75 model. I was thinking about configuration with 2060 and i7 8750h or i7 9750h as I mainly play MMO's.
My question is about thermals in this laptop in these particular configurations. I will probably have it repasted if it helps a bit. Are versions with different processors different in any other way?

Got mine from HIDEvolution with the option to install Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut on CPU + GPU, and Fujipoly Extreme Thermal Pads on heat sensitive surfaces for $95.00. My temps never go high above 75 degrees, and will drop to around 60 if you max out the fans., my room temp is around 23-26 degrees. MMO's a peace of cake for this machine. the games I'm playing are witcher3, M.E.Andromeda, A.C. Origins, A.C. Odyssey, MiddleEarth, etc etc.

    You wont be disappointed. ;)

Ended up exchanging this unit and the new one does not have this issue so far. Very light buzzing very rarely and not something that is bothersome. The thermals also appear to be much better. While playing CS GO this ran 10 degrees cooler than the previous unit. Stock paste. I'm bummed I already ordered kryonaut, fujipoly and that k5 pro as I might not even necessarily need it. Touchpad issue also resolved on new unit.

So for anyone that encounters this issue your best bet is to return it. I'll update if this changes. EDIT: updated on page 167.

Hello all, so it just arrived!!! GE75 9SF :D Thanks all @GenTechPC for their great support!

Still setting everything up, so far so good, but a couple of quick questions,

1: Where do I download Silent Option? The only place I seem to find is a forum post for beta back in 2016, or some dodgy looking software download portal?
2: HWInfo is only recognizing my Intel onboard graphics (see screenshot), however on the sensors it shows my RTX 2070 with a temp of 0C? Is this because of optimus?

    Thanks!

    1. Yes, silent option is an old piece of software. It still works well though so that's all that matters :p

    2. There is a tab in the gpu section that allows you to select gpu #0 (intel) and gpu #1 (nvidia). Its right under the Intel igpu picture.

And yes, optimus is causing the sensors to report 0°C as the gpu is turned off

if its orange or red it means that your GPU is being used. If it is blue the iGPU - intel GPU is being used. This is optimus. As for the battery, it is done intentionally to avoid overcharging which reduces battery life.....

Afterburner also causes the dGPU to wake continuously and will keep the light orange and impact battery life considerably.

Im gonna buy this laptop 8SF version (i8750 & 2070) but i'm a bit confused as there are 2 versions of it:

The 8SF-031 which has 512GB SSD
The 8SF-032 which has a 256GB SSD but is 100€ more expensive (the rest of the specs are the same)

I asked the vendor why the price difference when the SSD is half the size and he responded that the 032 version is more expensive because it has "some component(s) updated" over the 031 version that is not specified in the spec sheet.

Has anyone any idea what components could have been updated in the 032 version and if it's worth going for it even tho it's 100€ more expensive and has half the SSD size?

    Many thanks in advance!

    Best,
    C

    Hey all,

So far so good with the 9SF, max temps under extreme loads are like 80C on the CPU and 75C on the GPU using almost on-existent fan speeds / noise, when max fans are applied everything drops way down (10 - 15C), loving this laptop so far, thanks again to all @GenTechPC for the great work and support!

All I have done is a -150mV on the cache and core, as well as a -30mV on the iGPU, as well as an OC scanner OC on the GPU via afterburner (I think it gave it around +167MHz on the clock) and I put a +800MHz on the memory.

R15 gave it around 1200 and timespy gave it around 7.5k combined, I know people have pushed way more but I'm content with it thus far, and honestly can't be bothered pushing the extremes.

I do have a rather annoying issue though... does anyone else have an issue with NVidia control panel not showing the resolution and refresh rate options (screenshot attached of the options I do have), would this be due to optimus?
It also seems to be affecting CoD Black Ops 4, I can select 144Hz refresh rate in the options (and yes full screen is selected) but it will not apply, it keeps reverting back to 60Hz...

Anyone else getting this, and any known fix?

    Thanks!

So I guess I'm being ignorant here, but I should still be using a 4 month old MSI website driver over the latest drivers from the NV website?

    Thanks.

    Hello,

I'm also pretty happy with my 9SF.
Can you please share your throttlestop settings ? FIVR and TPL ?
Also, have you repasted to get such temperatures ?

I haven't done it yet on my side. Thx !

Attached is all I've done, I didn't touch anything in TPL.
There are some much more detailed guides concerning BIOS and Throttlestop tweaks than what I have done, and far more knowledgeable people in this community than I to answer questions should you have them, just scroll back through this thread for some really amazing information from really amazing people! In fact, if anyone sees anything wrong with what I've done please speak up and school my pleb self. ;P

I had both CPU and GPU pasted with Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut and had the Fujipoly Extreme thermal pads applied by the great folks from @GenTechPC, this seems to be keeping the laptop nice and cool under the most demanding applications. :) This thing is a real beast, I LOVE IT!

Furthermore to the post where I questioned the MSI GPU driver, should I be installing all drivers from that support page regardless of release date?
I've noticed some of my other drivers are also much newer than those posted on that page.

    Thanks!

Hi guys. I've a little problem. I deinstalled the MSI SCM (system control manager) and would like to reinstall it, but I can't find it on the MSI website.

Could somebody please so kind an send me a download link for my GE75?

    Thank you in advance!

    Hello,

Thanks for your screenshot mate !
Can you also please post a screenshot of your "TPL" tab ? (the one with the Turbo Boost power limit, Primary Plane Power Limit etc...). I'd like to compare your stock values and mine (and of course give you guys a feedback).

Regarding the GPU drivers, I personally installed the latest Nvidia version and have had no issue so far with pretty good scores on benchmarks.
Feel free to ask questions if you want more precisions.

    Thx !

I read earlier in this thread that some people had problems with the NVidia Driver and reverted back to the MSI one. So I stuck with it.

You can scroll through the release notes of the newer Nvidia Drivers and decide for yourself if you need any new "feature", if there are any. I certainly would try another driver when getting only 60 FPS.

Try using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to clean your system from old installs.

I deinstalled the Killer Wireless Driver and got the Intel WLAN 9560NGW Driver instead.

I actually have the same issue than Manchops : no refresh rate or resolution in Nvidia Control Panel.

I installed DDU, uninstall the latest Nvidia drivers and installed the 417.77.
I still don't have the refresh rate option. I'm going to investigate.

    Thx

The RTX2080 model has 8 heatpipes instead of seven. The eighth heatpipe goes over the ram modules making it difficult to upgrade as it gets in the way. RTX2060 and RTX2070 model have 7 heatpipes.

I too thought that the 9750h runs hotter but was proven wrong. It is a more efficient processor than the 8750h and from my experience, it runs cooler. I just got a new 9750h laptop. My prev laptop was a 8750h. 9750h has got more L3 cache too. Check the link below.

Can you find the option in the Windows "Display Settings" - "Advanced Display Settings" - "Display Adapter Properties" - "Monitor"?
