Having installed Dragon Center, do you find this conflicts with falkentynes bios tweaks?

No man. I don't have the balls to open up this laptop for a repaste. Also, they have that factory seal on it and they told me that the warranty is void if I open it up. The only way to repaste it is by giving it to the service center. But I'm sure they will put on the same thing anyway. So I guess I'll just live with this.

I didn’t notice anything when I went back into the bios.
I do have the task disabled now and only enable it when I need to install the control panels.

Update: GentechPC sent me back a label and will exchange the unit for me. I decided to exchange for the GS75 because I wanted a larger screen for the same price. So not the worst thing to happen because the issue gave me an opportunity to change my laptop. Thank you GenTechPC for the quick decision to fix the issue.

Hi all, some general newb-ish questions as I start to dig into my GS65 RTX 2080 (8SG) for anyone who has time to help. I was a computer systems engineer in a former life, but am coming back to Windows after many years an Apple user...

    1. I used MSI's USB recovery image tool to create an install backup. I also created a bootable USB of Win10 using Microsoft's tool. Does this group have preferences one way or another to "clean" load? In theory the Win10 USB install would be cleaner since it starts me at a newer rev (1809) and pulls out all of MSI's apps, but I noticed even a "clean" Win10 install downloads quite a bit of superfluous MS Store software off that initial install. Pros/cons of starting from MSI's imaging tool vs. the Win10 key?

    2. MSI's default image installs what appears to be an older version of Dragon Center, but under the Support section for my model, MSI lists Dragon Center v2 (the biggest difference seems to be inclusion of the battery calibration button, for seven total buttons). Anyone know why that is? In many reviews, I see the older six button version. Is there an advantage to using one versus the other?

    3. I've tried both iterations of Nvidia's subsequent DCH drivers for RTX notebooks, and in both instances, I keep getting random VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE BSODs. I've rolled back to the default 417.49 driver and the BSODs stop. Has anyone else had these? Will MSI eventually update its support page when it deems a dGPU driver release appropriate?

    4. Same as user who posted above, my GS65 came with a single stick of 16GB memory. I used HWInfo to find the exact part and ordered a second stick. I'm unfamiliar with the performance concerns of one vs. two sticks per the architecture, so sorry for the ignorant ask, but should I expect to see a small (even tiny) performance bump, say in my Firestrike or TimeSpy scores, when I add the second stick to my build?

    5. MSI's "driver and app center" utility weirdly says some apps and drivers aren't installed when in fact they are. It tells me the Intel Thunderbolt Driver isn't installed, for instance, so I download it in the app, run it, and then receive a dialogue box that confirms it *is* installed, and asks if I want to remove/repair. Flaw in MSI's tool?

As i learned, dual-channel makes a significant impact on game performance, not sure about benchmarks - see this video for details.

    1. I did a clean install of windows 10. I completely formatted the SSD and got rid of all MSI backup and recovery partitions. This is just me being me, I can't stand bloatware or any other custom pre-baked software, it just feels unclean...I went with standard Windows update drivers, all except the LAN, WIFI, Bluetooth, keyboard drivers. I highly recommend you install the Killer WiFi driver from MSI's support page; there's some funny business with loading certain webpages and ERR_SSL_BAD_RECORD_MAC_ALERT on Chrome without them.

I benchmarked before and after, doesn't appear to be any gains or losses in performance.

    4. There does appear to be significant performance gains with dual channel. I have 2x16G and it benches better than reviews that are using single channel RAM.

I was getting ERR_SSL_BAD_RECORD_MAC_ALERT even with killer drivers or intel/proset wireless drivers. It wasn’t until I went into device manager and selected killer 1550i driver for the Intel 9560 did it fix and I get all the options in killer’s control app now plus lower latency between 7-11ms vs 20-25ms with Intel drivers.

Thanks, very helpful. My takeaway from that video is that it's definitely helpful for games, but that it doesn't seem to move the needle much for benchmarks. I ask to get a sense for where I fall on the bench spectrum.

    JC / Everyday Enthusiast (with 2 x 16GB sticks)
    Firestrike (Normal Preset) - 16074
    Timespy (Default Preset) - 7008

    My Vanilla 8SG (with 1 x 16GB stick)
Firestrike (Default Preset) - 15489 (corrected)
    Timespy (Default Preset) - 6491

I should note by vanilla, that's with no aftermarket stuff, no re-paste, same starting 417.49 drivers, etc. Also no custom fan curve, fans set to auto. I believe the two basic differences between my laptop and JC's is that his was re-pasted and has that second stick of 16GB memory. I gather the delta between our scores is mostly attributable to his re-paste.

I'm new to the benchmarks, and just taking the defaults, assuming that's what's meant by "normal preset."

OK, just got back my unit from GentechPC. The Intel 600p M.2 NVMe (used for storage as the "D:\" drive) was acting up and was caught in an endless loop of power shortage. That's why the device didn't work. GentechPC took it out, the PC worked like a charm (my main drive is a Samsung EVO 970 M.2 NVMe). I had the Intel 600p for a while, before I bought the GS65, but for some reason, it had that issue. I asked GentechPC to swap the slots, so now: the Intel 600p is in SLOT-2, and the Samsung in SLOT-1, everything works fine. Unit was shipped back quickly and I got it today (GentechPC got my unit last Wed, started and finished troubleshooting that day, shipped it back to me fast).

Here's something weird that's happening: My dedicated GPU is not in use, I know this for sure, as I have the icon in my task bar that says (looks like a white square when dGPU is not in use, and green/red when dGPU is in use) "GeForce RTX 2080 with Max-Q Design (inactive). Conversely, if it is in use, it says which program uses it and the icon changes.
However - here's the weird part - the LED light that is amber/white is always amber. Even if the dGPU is not in use. The only time I see it white is when I first power on the laptop and it's white for like 3-5 seconds, then changes to amber (or orange if you will), but stays like that.

I have the latest nvidia drivers. About ready to update the BIOS and firmware, but thought I'd post here and ask if that's "normal"?

GPU-Z, Afterburner, HDMI Port plugged in will keep the dGPU on.

There are other programs that do is as well but these are the ones I remember.

Try task manager and sort by GPU, I believe GPU-1 is dGPU. Process Explorer also lets you check what uses dGPU.

Yea I was in the same situation, needing to return it to gentech due to the LM not working for the CPU. To their credit the UPS return labels are 2 day air so it should hopefully be a quick process for reapplication, that shipping level isn't cheap.

The light on my GS65 is doing the same thing, always amber. I was on the newest Windows update as well. Maybe updating bios/FW will fix things. I know there were earlier posts about afterburner effecting it but I don't even have that running at start up or anything.

So I have a 2080mq RB 15 and I'm thinking about returning it for the MSI GS65. The performance has been great and I'm aware that the MSI with its 80w chip will be a tad bit worse. But the touchpad is driving me crazy - it intermittently stops being responsive and refuses to do so until a restart. It does seem that Synapse is interfering with it. Even when it does work fine, there's a noticeable latency in its tracking. Also, lets just say Razer Support hasn't been too helpful, so I don't want to bother with a new unit since I reside outside the US anyway.

External temps are extremely high as well. Coming from a Blade 2017 (7700HQ and 1060), this was particularly a shock - but I'm not sure if they're any better on the GS65 due to the 8750H. Another thing that bothers me is the lack of manually adjusting the fan curve - the performance differential between various profiles and speeds is tangible - For example, on Hitman 2, I noticed a bump of 10fps (17%) from using the default gaming mode fan curve vs. just setting fans to max on gaming mode.

I'm wondering how the GS65 will help me in regards to the issues mentioned above. I know it has the ability to set custom fan curves at least, and its trackpad seems to be better than that on the 2019 RB15 (from what I hear, the 2018 RB15 trackpad was the best). Are issues related to the improperly seated heat sink and unresponsive fn/enter keys widespread?

I'm having issues with external display, hopefully someone can point me in right direction...

At work I have a dell 3216 4k display and a 4k Panasonic tv. Either device works fine on it's own, but plugging both in the dell disappears as attached
tv is connected via hdmi, ir I can do hdmi to DP to startech TB into the usb'c port
dell is mini DP or full DP into the startech

At home I've the same dell with a LG 3WK95C (3k monitor) and they both work fine

What's more frustrating is that my old gigabyte P56XT (circa 2 year old laptop with GTX 1070) works fine. Also have a Lenovo P50 workstation laptop and it exhibits the same problem as the MSI.

Anyone any ideas? I've been faffing around for hours trying to find some setting that would help.

I would be careful making a jump like that. In my experience, the marginal improvements in a move like that rarely lead to satisfaction. Both units have their pros and cons and it looks like you are worried about the biggest con with Razer - their support. I would try to work that angle as much as you can before you do a full on return and replace. If you're still in the return window - just return it and try another unit. Your temp issues may be a bad factory paste job.

BTW - the trackpad is better in the GS65 2019...but only than the 2018. I still think the Apple trackpad is far and away better and I would never use my GS65 trackpad unless I have to (I use a G305 wireless mouse). I can't comment about how good or bad it is versus the Razer 15.

The GS65 has a lot going for it - better support/warranty (MSI), better price - but many things are subjective - so that may lead you to have some buyers remorse if you switch. If you do switch (or stay) - try to order from a reseller that can re-paste and do some other upgrades that will eliminate the possibility of the pain that you're going through now.

I had a RB 15 2018. As for trackpad, I had to adjust to the Razer's being so big as my palm kept resting on it which would mess up tracking all the time. Your description seems worse than that. I like the GS65 trackpad pretty well in comparison.

As for thermals the MSI also runs hot, and I expect the CPU would thermal throttle a bit if not LM'ed. Don't know how it compares to the Razer, as I think Razer tends to throttle aggressively in general to have quieter fans. You can also flash the card to the 90w version if you want in exchange for louder fans (seen in the sig of the post above mine). Also don't know if that would be worth it at all without a LM application.

The description for the BIOS update is a bit confusing. The BIOS update says it updates EC to .106. Does this mean you don't need to run the EC firmware update from MSI's website or should you run it again after doing the BIOS update?

Here's a question for the masses (looking for advice/opinion):
So, my Intel 600p (my 500GB "storage" M.2 NVMe drive) is acting up and I think I need to replace it. I'd probably get the Samsung EVO M.2 NVMe (either 1TB or 500GB) to replace it. Should I send it back to GentechPC and have them install the new drive (I'd buy the drive from them, they have excellent price on the EVO) or should I attempt to open up the laptop myself (flipped mobo…)? They reason I'm asking, is I'd hate to ship my laptop back and not use it for 2 weeks, especially since I just got it back 2 days ago.
I've seen videos of advanced users opening up the GS65 to access the drives and RAM. Thoughts?

It's really easy to do, depending on how warranty works for you (I assume you are allowed to break factory seal)

It's only about 15 screws outside, 2 inside and maybe 5 ribbon cables.

It seems difficult but believe me it's not. I have opened this thing up like 20 times now.

Probably this one. You do not have to take out the battery. Just UNPLUG the battery from MoBo (obviously AC power as well).

So ribbon cables (there is one up top), unscrew the 2 screws holding down the MoBo and flip (be careful with WiFi card and cables).

Also SSD from factory comes with a thermal Pad underneath, if you have pads you may want to add one to the new SSD.

Wow, what an awesome poster! Rep+Like to you dear sir.

Here's what I found on amazon - I don't care about the price, just trying to find out which one is better:
    1. Samsung 970 EVO Plus Series - 1TB PCIe NVMe - M.2 Internal SSD (MZ-V7S1T0B/AM)
    2. Samsung 970 EVO 1TB - NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 SSD (MZ-V7E1T0BW)
    3. Samsung 1TB 970 EVO NVMe M2 Solid State Drive
(They all cost pretty much the same, but all sound the same).
    Which one should I get?

The 970 Evo Plus is intended for enthusiasts and gamers. Compared to the 970 Evo it can handle longer read/write at max speeds due to its better cooling, it also has a faster cache at 1gb which makes it about 3,000-3,500 write/read. The Evo plus uses a 96 layer nand, lower voltages, better thermal management, faster read and write for longer times. I’d get the 970 Evo plus.

Isn’t if it has 16 single, @scottycruz needs only other single 16gb not 2x8 one.
In my understanding single 16 (1x16) performs worse than dual 16 (2x8) so that answer, if he meant performance is same, is wrong.

    Hello all!

I vahe bought an asus scar 2 with rtx2070, and I plan to return it and buy a gs65 instead, with 2070/2080 max-q.
Does this computer thermal throttle too?

I’m doing 2x 8gb just because the price is $100 cheaper. And also can anybody recommend me a good ram brand for my 2060 stealth laptop?

How much difference is there between the 2060 and 2080MQ at 1080p, with both upgraded with dual channel RAM? Having a difficult time finding comparisons; most reviews are for the 2080 version.

Also, is there anything that can be done to remove the power limits for the i7 8750h? I'm ordering LM through HID and I should have pretty good thermal room...

I got this MSI GS65 two days ago. At first everything was ok, except for nvidia Optimus wasn't working. RTX was running all the time as indicated by the orange light next to the power button. So I thought I could reinstall nvidia drivers. I used DDU in safe mode and removed everything. The new nvidia drivers (419.17, 418.91, 418.81) I downloaded did not work as it was "not compatible with this version of windows"

So I installed Geforce experience and installed the newest drivers from there. Again... no nvidia Control Panel.

After I got home from work today, I actually reinstalled windows from microsoft's ISO.

Again, the nvidia's official driver indicated that it was not compatible with my Windows 10 (version 1809).

I ended up using the drivers provided by MSI, and there's no control panel with it.
No nvidia panel when right click on desktop. No nvidia panel when I right click on taskbar icon (right bottom corner icons), only option is "Exit"

How can I get that back? Thanks!

Wanted to give a shout out to genTechs service. The LM application was messed up due to the 7 day shipping, probably sitting on its side in a truck the whole time. They sent me a 2-day airmail label, reapplied the LM and sent it back 2day the day they received it. So all in all only 5 days to get it fixed up, all free. Awesome service.

IMON SLOPE BIOS edit. Tricks the computer into registering lower Wattage so it never hits PL.

Yeah, I think so. I used my Microsoft account to log into windows and downloaded other MSI apps. The only option I get when accessing the microsoft store in a browser is "Redeem A Code"

Try logging out of the store, restart the computer, then log back in.
Also, if you downloaded it before, it should be a library item and you can go to your library and redownload it.

I had a lot of issues with the Microsoft store. Creating a new account (can be a local account) fixed it.
