I have no passion or desire for overclocking of notebooks, especially if warranty is in question as it is in 1722.

    P.S. : Ankara

By the way, I have at last bought one ID2. My shopping list seems to be:

    Intel T9400 (ES) : $155 @ eBay
    Intel 5300 Wireless : $30 @ eBay
    320GB HDD : Local Supply
4 GB RAM : Local Supply

    I hope CPU works well.

Your warranty will not be effected by overclocking (well your CPU warranty may but how the hell the CPU seller will know). When you overclock the chances are you will burn your CPU. Overall MSI is the one that provides the computer with the turbo button and overclocking ability.

I am new to this forum...and it is pretty great!

    I recently purchased one of these laptops(MSI 1722 ID1)

and set out to completing it within a few days....well....that was a week ago and I am having some serious issues.

    Here is my setup.

    MSI 1722 ID1
    Intel T9550
PRO WLS 5300 802.11 ABGN-HALF PCIE MINI CARD
WD Scorpio Black 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
    CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

It will power on but the screen is completely black and it will not boot.

I tried removing the memory and it will not beep when it is removed.

I tried removing the battery and running off AC power and it wont boot.

And i removed the CMOS battery and left it out for a good 10 minutes and reseated it....and still nothing.

This one has me stumped. The HDD spins and the fans all come on and the notebook runs stable...but no image or POST or beeps.

    Any suggestions?

Could be bad memory, bad CPU, or even a bad GPU. Do you have another system with a Montevina or a Santa Rosa platform that works? If so, try swapping the CPU and Memory into the barebone to see if anything changes.

Unfortunately I do not have a system to test these components in.

I will tell you that everything is recently purchased and is brand new.

I am just wondering if because it wont POST if it could be something as simple as reseating the CPU and heatsink?

It should still post without the CPU on the heatsink, but make sure the CPU is seated properly and also locked in place, and also check to see if the GPU is in its socket properly, even though it came with the Barebone.

Should I remove the cpu and gpu and reseat them both?

I will of course clean the compound off and put a fresh dab on

And the documentation that came with it is garbage.

how can I check the BIOS?

Does it really matter what the BIOS version is?

I am using a T9550 and not a Quad core.

More than likely...it is the 1.0H

Flatius ... I had exactly the same problem and did the same fault finding routine as you. It is almost certainly the cpu pin lock mechanism being not fully engaged. You must turn the locking screw beyond its initial point of resistance with quite firm pressure ... you will know when it has fully engaged.

    Hello,

I've been following this thread for a few weeks now - Thank you to everyone who has contributed! Especially Electrosoft. I bought my 1722 id1 last week from ebay and am still waiting for it to arrive!

What about the hole on the back where the logo should go? Has anyone come up with a viable solution? Can you get plugs from MSI or another company?

Also, I plan on purchasing an ATi HD4850/70 mobile for this puppy once they are available on the market. It would seem that the main concern is how the memory chips will line up with the heatsink. I'm betting the power supply will have no problems since the GT-725 ships w/ the 4850m installed. Any thoughts on this?

Can't wait to get it up and running!

I opted for the p8600 (ebay), Hitachi Travelstar 320gb w/16mb cache, 4gig OCZ, intel 4965agn wireless card (all from tigerdirect), and my optical drive from alvio.com for 69 shipped-- although their site says low stock, they have not shipped the drive as of yet-- I may cancel it and hope for the bezels to become available later on.
total system price: $697 shipped ($677 after mail in for HD)

    Thanks guys!! :D

I asked this same quistion a few pages back, the answer was that there is a blank "plug" that will cover the hole included with the hardware. so you will be able to fill the hole and not have to worry about having a ugly hole in your laptop.

    Great to hear!

Today, I actually purchased a 1722 ID2 barebone from ebay and I'm going to build a system for my mother. I originally wanted to get her a Dell Studio 17 or a HP DV7t because she wants a notebook with a number pad. Now with this barebone on order, I have more liberty to add stuff that would make things go faster; namely a 64gb SSD (any recommendations? Don't wanna spend too much money either). While I get the parts, I'll definitely experiment a little with this chassis, and I'm sure if you look at my sig, you might know what I'll be doing :D (hint, MXM GPU...).

If you can, yes. The GPU should be easy enough to seat properly, but as ThunderDuck stated and I suggested earlier, make sure the CPU pin lock is fully locked.

I have a 32GB SSD in my other laptop. IMO you shouldn't buy it, it does not worth the price. Instead put in 3 gigs of RAM and switch off Virtual Memory in Windows. And one more thing, install Win7 to get serious performance and user friendliness. Just an advice though of course. GL!

You guys have been a great help. Thanks.

To answer the hole in the back question, it is for the id badge. Mine came with one. It it just a piece of plastic with a little adhesive.

Yes, it matters what BIOS is included. Most likely 1.0H is having problems recognizing your CPU since it was introduced December 2008, while your BIOS is dated early/mid 2008.

The fact your system doesn't auto power down shows the CPU is compatible, but it just hanging is a problem. It should make it to the post screen then freeze, but if it is blank, we know at least one issue is the outdated BIOS.

The easy fix is to install an older, recognized CPU to update your BIOS and see. If that doesn't work, then:

Yank everything out of the system except for the CPU and 1 memory module.

Physically inspect the CPU to make sure all the pins are straight. They can bend pretty easily ever so slightly.

Make sure the locking screw is fully engaged (after surveying each side of the chip to make sure it is seated flush).

Try to boot with one module. If that fails then the other module. If that fails then the second module in either slot.

Most likely a BIOS issue though....

Wow! I had no idea that the bios needed to be update so frequently. I just bought the notebook last week.

Well this is rediculous...I buy a new laptop that is supposed to support dual core socket p and it won't even support a t9550!

What a drag, now I have to buy another processor to update it so I can use the one I initially bought for it!

    What a pain.

    Thanks for the tip.

I have installed Win7 and it seems that I have lost the camera, "worked fine in Vista" the software installs, yet the camera is not found.
    Device manager shows an unknown.
Any drivers or tricks for Win7 64bit and the camera?

i suppose that would have helped, forgot all about it on the touch pad ;)
Its been a long day, installed a brand new WD 320 drive, I got all of maybe two hours on it when it went bad, fails the WD test and smart drive, RAW read error, will rma it.
Started over again with a older Hitachi sata.

The T5xxx series are a big pile of swings and misses so far. They are the older Merom 65nm fabs, but the 65nm isn't the problem (Hence a T7500 worked fine for updating the BIOS).

800/1066 CPUs seem to work fine across the board (except some of the newer 1066's need a BIOS update to be recognized properly).

It is the 667/533's where incompatibilities seem to be creeping into the picture for getting to the CL for a bios/firmware flash update.

Go back and check everything and make sure the locking screw is *firmly* in the lock position. sometimes you think it is, but it isn't.

Ok i reseated the cpu and now it is acting more strange.

When I power it on...it comes on for about 5 seconds...then shuts off.

Then after about 5 more seconds it turns itself back on and then it doesnt show anything or boot to post...?

I am not sure about this cpu socket though...it seems that if you turn the screw it will lock...but if you turn a little farther it will reset itself and the cpu is loose....it keeps turning and it wont stop...it gets tighter and then loosens up.

The cpu lock screw should only turn about a 1/4 turn then stop.
If it goes around in a full circle, you indeed now have an issue

    SS,
So does anyone know the history of this 1722 004 ID2 model with that
    smooth touch panel?
i have not seen it posted anywhere, maybe an oem canceled order?

Or with that new law that bands the sale of products containing lead being sold/targeted to children set in ;) I mean it seems lead is in everything coming from the other side of the pond.
Or maybe something to do with the Rambus lawsuit filed in July and a new filing in December towards Nvidia that also implicated MSI

Kinda like to know how/why these hit the streets.
I have my suspicions after speaking with the MSI Sales/Marketing department.

Maybe I will take it over to the shop nearby and have the swap a different CPU to see if that is the issue. If it works then I will try to upgrade the bios.

I guess to 1.0R would be correct?

Yes. That's good idea too, there is a possibility your laptop came with a very old BIOS, and with your newly released T9550 not helping the situation either.

Do you think I got a bum notebook?

It is starting to feel that way. I am concerned that the CPU socket may be useless because the locking screw may be stripped. I can get the CPU to hold firmly in the socket and the laptop is acting differently than before. With it starting and shutting of after 5 seconds and then starting itself back up. It seems really odd.

This is how mine behaved before I had locked the pins properly. If i can recall it correctly ... something like a little over 45 degrees turn of the lock screw should give firm resistance, and a bit over 90 degrees turn of the screw for a solid lock ...

How far are you turning the screw?

I am more concerned about lost time than performance. I think it will only lead to hangs or BSODs in reasonable overclocking (not 2.53 -> 4.0) but I really rarely need that much power. CPU will be ES and practically without warranty so there is no need to jeopardize it.

By the way, is there anyone tried 1722 with a Server 2008. Is there any missing driver?

I said earlier in this post that the screw turns 360 degrees. At certain points the socket seems to tighten and then if i turn a little bit more it doesnt stop it just releases the cpu socket.

I think if i can get he screw to stay in the position where it is locked i will be ok.

But the screw doesnt stop turning, it just gets harder to turn and then releases the tension.

It may help members to know your location, just maybe someone from here is in your area and can supply a cpu and flash it for you.

But then again, that is only if you feel that personal info should be made public.

    Hi again,

I have now a problem, which I haven't thought of.

    I bought from China a "Brand New Intel® WiMAX/WiFi Link 5350 wireless network adapter + 3 Antennas (533ANX MMW)"
But when it has come I realized the connection to the antennas is different.
While the 1722 would like to have to three wholes to use screws to attach the 1722-antennas the 5350 comes with three shielded male-female-connections. Hopefully you can see this male-connector of the 5350.

Well there are now two solution possible:
    1) I can try to place the 5350 antennas within the 1722, but how and where - what do I have to think and to be aware of?
Where should they be placed ideally? (Parallel, crisscross, 3-dimensional [righ-tleft, fwd-bckwd & up-down]

Where could they be placed easily but sufficiently? (some guidelines?)

Is there an adapter that connects the 1722-antennas into this male-plug?
    Where to get?

    Thanks in advance,
    Carl

Well, I just installed the same equipment in another MS-1722 that I had(from different supplier) so I figure it isn't the barebones its self. so since I am getting a black screen with everthing else powering up it is the cpu. Man I heard that a T9400 works fine with the stock bios. I wonder if that is not the case with the 01 model. Guess I better start looking on ebay for a cheap older duo chip.

Well...Mine has to do with the actual moutning of the cpu...I think.

    I am having socket issues.

But then again I was told to update the Bios too.

I am just dreading the idea of tracking down a spare core 2 that I can do it with.

I wish that someone could publish what cpus are compatible with the 1.0H and 1.0R bios...?

I just found ou that the processor I have was released in December 2008.

I believe that electrosoft was correct when he said that I would need a BIOS upgrade.

I guess I am going to need to look for an older cpu to do this....what a drag!

What part of the country are you in? maybe we can pool or start a pool for a chip compatible with 1.0H and send it around just for folks to boot it up to install the new bios.

I've installed 3x Scorpio HD's so far with no problems at all. No jumpers required.

Remember, when in doubt, always start with just the CPU installed and one stick of memory and work from there.

    T9400 works fine with the 1.0H BIOS. I updated a few 1722's before I sold it. I then used a T7500.
