If I can get one 1722 (I will try Paypal donation option here at last :) ) I consider using ES CPU since prices are quite good in comparison. But I will be pleased to hear if anyone has experience about cons and pros of ES CPUs as there was a thermal monitoring issue somewhere at forum.

Mine came with the bezel that is suppose to go there but it doesn't lock into place obviously since its suppose to be held on by the ODD that is suppose to be there. Alas, I have a gaping hole in mine.

It would seem, if you get a ID1, buy the Sony Optiarc drive that can fit in it with the bezel, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118017

Having an incomplete laptop will suck though. You won't even know if all the parts even work until it's fully functional

I wouldn't skimp on the WiFi card. I'd spend the extra ~$10/ea and get the 5300agn's (3x3) versus the 5100's (2x2), since the 1722's come with all three leads.

The pics I posted in this thread of the 3rd party drive installed in a 1722 are the Sony Optiarc:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118017

It fits relatively well, and actually compared to my real MSI drives (posted also elsewhere in this thread), it is a smidge quieter and faster imho so you're not really losing out and it doesn't fit bad at all and gets the job done. Why I sat two units side by side with XP installs loading identical files with identical setups to listen/test was a few hours of boredom while I get over this headcold, heh.

Plus, it seems these and their original drive parts are on their way out. Just remember if you get the Sony part to gently lock it into place as it doesn't slide in as easily/smoothly as the OEM part. The 5 MSI drives just slid in, while the two Sony's required a gentle jiggle/nudge. ;)

Thank you all for the advise thus far, I do agree that the wifi 5300 is only a matter of a few $'s more and offers a nice advantage in usage

Intel 5300 is currently $25 - $30 and 5350 (with wimax) about $55 - $60 including shipping from chinese sellers.

    electro,
Thank you for all your valuable information you have provided within the multiple MSI threads.
May i ask you if you have purchased from this vendor or used this card in your msi's

    http://www.provantage.com/intel-533an-mmww2~7ITE90E0.htm
This adapter, available in both PCIe Mini Card and Half Mini Card form factor
Host Interface Mini PCI Express Dimensions 1.18" Height x 2.01" Width x 0.12" Thickness
This one to me looks like its a full size card and not half?
Either should work correct, any disadvantage from one or the other?

Any of you try hacintosh on these 1722's and it is my understanding that the Intel 5300 wifi is a no go.

Well, a few day I haven't been here and you've been typing a lot :). As I see may be I was the only one celebrating... any way I'm still waiting for my MSI and I am little angry about that I can't do test wile everybody else do :(
cyber16 - where did you heard that intel 5300 is no good? I hope it's not true, because I already ordered one.

Oh... that's good. I'm using BAD old Windows :D
One more thing, I've asked before, but nobody said anything... Is it possible to buy from somewhere beter video card (HD4850 - the one that is in GT725). I really think, according to what I saw in posted pictures, that the only difference between 1722 ID2 and GT725 is the better screen used in GT (1920x1200). Actually there are 2 types of 1722 ID2:
    1. 937-1772219-004 WSXGA+ non-glare (or 1680 x 1050)
    2. 937-172219-002 WUXGA non-glare (the real baby - 1920 x 1200)
But I think that we all have either ID1 or the first one of ID2. If somebody have the second ID2, please write impressions.
So, back to the video card ... I've Googled everything and I didn't found a place that you can buy one.
And another thing - Is there a option in BIOS to set diffent overckock for the TURBO mode? I really want to fry this baby to the maximum :D

I am still debating between the MS-1651 ID3, and the MS-1733 ID1. Quistion is do I want a simple 17" screen, or a cool looking black and red beast?
And no, I can not aford to get the 1722 ID2, $500 is my budget and the ID2 will put it well beyond that budget.
Here is a list of parts I am thinking about getting to complete these:

Intel Celeron M 575 2.0 GHZ (~$100) [Just found out that T7300 is same price for 2.0ghz Dual core]
Toshiba 80gig SATA Hard Drive (~$50)
    Crucial 4gb (2x2gb) DDR2-800 (~$50)
The 1722 will also require Sony Optiarc DVD-RW (~$50)

Do these items all seem compatible?

get the ID3. The 17" screen on the other is nice but is a pain in the but and a 9600gt will be underpowered for the res on the 17"

The MSi 1722 can be turned into a true sleeper. electrosoft already got a QX9300 working in his system, and apparently the GT725 is really an MSI 1722 (ID2) with a 4850 card, and MSI's notebooks are very flexible with MXM (their GT627 is really an MSI 1651 with a 9800M GS and although the GS is MXM-IV, it fits and works in an MXM-II/III slot of the 1651).

I'd love to see someone mod a 1722 with a 4850 (or even a 9800M GT or GTX) and a QX9300. That should rattle the Clevo boys a bit and show them that you don't have to make silly revisions to make the pre-revision model so obsolete (example: an M570TU not working with a QX9300, while the M570ETU does)...

hell, I'd go crazy is all of this were done in a 1651!

I'm actually considering getting my mom a barebone MSI 1722 (she wants a notebook with a number pad) and just add parts.

Makes very good sense to me ... upgrading the cpu and vid card 12 - 18 months down the track when parts are cheap will most likely spin the service life out to around 3 years pour mois.

Had my 1722 up and running for about an hour now and am very happy. My first notebook build ... failed to fully engage processor pinlock which of course had me sweating for an hour or so till I figured out the mistake. Bios Ver. 1.0H correctly recognized my engineering sample processor (sp9400 I think) ... not sure if i have temp/fan control yet. WUXGA non glare takes some getting used to ...

    :D

At first I was looking for a 1920x1200 one but it is too much for me. I'd prefer such resolution at a 19" LG S900 which was 1440x900 as a joke.

Personally I don't think over powering this barebone.

In fact where is the fun if I will change 9600GT and use a QuadCore CPU in such a barebone with that price?

When you change the video card of this barebone it will NOT be any more only MS-1722 laptop. :D But this as I thing is going to be impossible, not because the laptop can't support more powerfull cards, but because you can't find them anywhere...
And about the low price you can be only happy, because you'll have powerfull laptop for less money. I personaly will never be ashame to take it out anywhere.

Actually I think it is great that this notebook has an upgrade path similar to a desktop machine. The "fun" as you put it, is in not having to spend another thousand dollars in twelve months time to be able to play the latest games etc.

I can have a lot of fun with a thousand dollars ...

There is no reason to use this barebone if I will heavily modify it, I think. In fact, this is partly because I don't think this barebone primarily for gaming.

After all, that's why it is barebone. It's buyer's choise what it will be in the end. High-end gaming or low-end computing laptop. My opinion is that ID2 is made for gamers and ID1 for everything elese :)

    Yes the Turbo Works,
It is the icon just to the right of the Eco on the touch panel
Press it and you have the flame icon appears on the screen within Vista.
I will be giving Win7 a try tomorrow.

Yes, ID2. I have one of the black ones too but didn't have time to play with it yet.

Also overclocked the GPU via ntune to 605/910 and got 6227 3dmark06 at 2.6ghz. Max CPU temp was 73C and max GPU temp was 68C. I am using 182 dox opt drivers.

Update:This thing is ice cold. After using the gateways, I can say this cooling system is much better. You can game when the computer is actually on your lap.

It seems that T9400 is faster and cheaper than SP9400 but 35W instead of 25W. Would you recommend T9400 and does 1722 support it?

T9400 will get you to 2.9ghz if you overclock. Price wise it is a good choice. This machine is pretty cold so 35W CPU souldn't cause any issues.

Correct. I am coming from gateways and hps where overclocking was a dream. Now that it is available, I'll take it.
