Where do you get the 1.0R BIOS? The latest one on MSI's site is 1.0P. I got that and the 4.29 firmware from their site.

1.0R is not available, the ones you referenced above are the latest available for download and work fine.

With a T9400 processer which is the better and/or right memory to get:
    PC2-8500 DDR2-1066 or PC2-6400 DDR2-800 ?

1.0R is available from the BTO guys' website. Look around this topic and you'll understand what I'm talking about ;-)

I figured out the HDMI problem, with another driver everything is working fine, I even managed to setup my 5.1 analog surround system with this laptop. This is one of the best laptops I've ever seen (at least for my requirements :))!!

Yeah, the 1722 rocks, period. eBay supply is definitely drying up, so I would definitely say if you want one, better get it now or kick yourself later.

    I just got mine :)

And now as opende it and start to install everything, I have 2 questions:

    1) update Bios (or both Bios & Firmware?):
I have gat a cheap udate-cpu (T3200) do I have to use this to update at least the Bios (the firmware can hereafter be updatetd with new quad-cpu) or do I have to update with this cpu both bios & firmware

    2) need of copper-pipe just for the update?
Do I have to install the copper-heat-pipe on that cheap-update-cpu just for the update of the bios (and the firmware?)?
I think the update is not really a cpu-stress-test and if I don't install this cooling-pipe, I can leave the heat-pads for the two chips untouched until I'll install the fiinal quad-cpu.
How do you (RePaRaQu,electrosoft) handle this?

    Thanks in advance,
    Calli

    the cheap 8GB (ebay art.no. 270341116663) £149,99 (~ 170 € ;) were recognizied (by Bios)

    Have fun, carl

I think it's better to install the heatpipe. It takes 4 screws really and means a lot cooling-wise. Don't be lazy on this one IMO. Don't worry about the heatpads they are reusable without problems. I installed the heatpipe about 5 times now, different cpus, tests, etc. and nothing wrong with the cooling at all.
    (I'm lazy generally too btw ;) )

I would have atleast a heat sink on the chip, they can burn up way faster than you think. Better safe than sorry right. Besides , flashing a bios is not the time when you want to have a cpu fail, or power or anything...you will most likely brick your bios chip. but thats just my opinion and I am not a computer expert.

What's the difference between 1.0P and 1.0R? Is 1.0R a custom BTO BIOS?

I found Dolby Control Center.zip on BTO's website, what does it do and do any 1722 owners have this installed?

Update: per Intel, Dolby Control Center is for Vista only

Is the updated audio driver (dated 1-20-09) on BTO's website from MSI or Realtek?

We have been through this before............

The "official" download on the msi site is 1.0P, this is what i a referencing. You said you received a notebook with 1.0R from msi. If you saved this bios then now you have it, but the msi site has ONLY 1.0P available:

    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=135&prod_no=1521

Also, are there any good badges or anything to put on the case on the back of the LCD screen? I loaned my laptop out, but when I get it back, I know that black rectangle is going to get annoying.

As I don't need a tv-tuner I bought and stucked in this: Intel Turbo Mem.

Right now I am just able to start and look 'into' the original Bios (haven't got everything yet), but the Bios does not recognize this Turbo Mem as being in the PCIe slot.

When you get it working, let us know if it helps. I've read mostly bad reviews about it, but some people are saying that it's been improved and the bad reviews are of the original version, which wasn't very efficient.

    Hello to all!
I just want to say that this is perfect post.
I've just bought one MSI 1722-ID2 (with DVD-RW) and I'm waiting it to arrive. As I read the whole post this is gonna be the greatest laptop for it's money (ofcource it depends what parts you put in) :)
I just want to ask did somebody tried this wireless card with his latop:
Intel WiMAX Wifi 5350 Wireless N MiNi PCI Express Card? - This is the only part that left to buy :)
And one more thing - Few times some of you ask about changing the video card with more powerfull one (MXM-III), did somebody do something? I am really fan of ATI, not nVidia and I want to cange mine with HD4850.

I currently have the MS-1722 ID1 with it's older BIOS. Is it worth updating the BIOS to the latest revision even though I'm not using a Quad? You may be asking why wouldn't you use a Quad, but I already had a C2D and didn't want to spend more money on it quite yet.

Laptop runs fine as is, just curious if the newer BIOS has something that would benefit.

If you have a working system and you're not going to use a newer cpu I don't think you'll gain anything. If you know what you're doing the bios update is pretty easy, so it's a little future proofing incase you come across a good deal on a newer processor later down the road. But you can just as easily update right before installing the new cpu.

I noticed you don't have an optical drive, curious what you used to get your os on?

I didn't look for MSI site but there may be kind of explanation for new versions. If there isn't anything you may benefit other than microcode update there is no reason to update then.

a USB device may be used instead of ODD

The concept is very cool, it's just a question of whether or not it helps.

What I'd like to see is if any software gets developed to specifically take advantage of it. Especially audio software plugins, if you could load more audio plugins/virtual instruments in to your turbo memory this would be a major breakthrough.

I followed this guide using my original XP Pro SP1 cd.

    http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4900

Was quite easy, but I was slipstreaming newer updates and drivers causing headaches. Better to just use the original CD and do the plain ol updates.

I was wondering what was the best firmware updates on the MS-1722? I remember that most were going with 720 drivers, did all of those work with the barebones? How about that turbo button? I am still waiting on my mini sata cable to come in to hook up my ODdisk to load everything up. I would probably try a cheap flashdrive but the PC I am on now is an older one running windows 98SE and it doesn't seem to like all flash drives much. :(

Computer4Sure has moved the Optical Drive for the 1722 to "discontinued" status and buy.com isn't even listing the DVDRW device. Every other place just keeps extending their lead times.

    98SE, really? Must be a dinosaur. j/k :D
    -
If you have the ID2 version then use the stock GX-720 stuff. Update your bios and EC firmware with the retal version and you will have new options in advanced bios. To see those new settings you will need to hit ctrl-ins-del. Once you install windows and install scm then your turbo button will work.

If you have the ID1 version then you will want to use the bios and EC firmware that Reparqu (?) has linked and there is no turbo button. Everything else can be the retail 720 stuff.

    Hello all,
Last week I purchased one redtrim optical included via eBay and also purchased that three-week old boxed Intel P9500 that was posted in the classifieds area.
The cpu arrive ASAP "thank you SSWilson" although the laptop as of Saturday just shipped.
Mean while in preparation for the arrival of that laptop, I have been trying to catch up on all the informative threads here.

Is there a conclusive answer to early/older original firmware bios support for the P9500 out of the box?

Or should i find another cpu asap for flashing?

Now here was my next step, I purchased more of these. all have the original optical drives, no need to hunt for them.

I will need to drop a cpu into each and test fire them as the DOA return window is only a few days after the arrival.
I don't think it would be in my best interest to use that P9500, I can already see the potential of a mishap and bent pins.
So i must find a low cost cpu to use as a bench chip.

Even if it is the same cpu being installed & removed just for doa testing.

Meanwhile I will be in the need for permanently installed cpu's
What is the general consensus for the best value performance/cost retail or street priced cpu, I don't care if they are used or new oem tray.
I know this is a some-what loaded question.

    All advice is welcome

It seems that the Intel Pro Wireless 5300 802.11-Abgn PCIE Mini Card is the choice of many and I have seen several references to Provantage as a good source.

Locating value on hard drives & memory is relatively easy

Anything I need to look out for?

Hey Cyber, glad the CPU found its way to you quickly. Sorry to hear your other part did not ship as promptly. I believe the P9500 should be OK for testing that initial notebook, should fire up OK.

I have only used P9500 and P8400 in these notebooks but others have said in various threads that different 65nm socket P processors have worked although some features may not work such as temp reporting and such. Technically, these notebooks only support the 45nm socket P's but for bulk testing you might be able to lay your hands on a cheap 65nm. The most reliable, cheapest CPU for these will likely be P8400/P8600 and the only place I know of to get them consistently at a descent value is going to be Ebay. Look for SLB3R or SLB3S for the OEM versions. Look at Intels mobile SSPEC to get an idea of what chips will work. Seems the P8400's have been going for more lately though.

For wifi, the 5300 is a great card, I picked up some from Buy.com with free shipping. For resale I would probably look at going with the 5100 as they are somewhat cheaper and work well enough.

Good luck with selling these, hopefully you have a better class of buyer in your area than I did in mine. :D

Looks like I will probably be getting this laptop. I can only afford the 1722 ID1 and I don't plan on overclocking anyway. Sure the ID2 looks a lot better but I am on a limited Budget.

From what I have read so far I can't at this time afford a dual core CPU, looks like only the Intel Celeron M 550 is in my budget. 4gigs memory, and a 80gig hard drive, as well as a Intel Wireless G PCIe card.

I can either install windows XP Pro, Windows Vista Ultimate, 32 or 64bit. I have available copies of each. I am worried that Vista will be to much for the Celeron so I might be limited to XP.

Does this sound doable to everyone, I can always upgrade everything later a component at a time, I figure this build will cost about $450 give or take.

One thing I have not seen mentioned here in the thread is that the Id1 has a hole in the back of the lid for a brand label, anyone know where I can get something to attach here to make it look complete?

Diablo I understand the budget thing. same goes for me.. I was limited to cpus and the one chance I had for a ID2 was well over $150 more than what I paid for the ID1. I am building 2 Id1s and 2 PCs (mid towers) . My old pc finally died (which is why I am on the older back up) . I have 1 teen in college(film), one starting this year, and I am going back for a Bs in material science. So we all needed a computer now, sucks to spread the money over all of them, but oh well. I have to say this has been the best forum on these barebone MSI kits. These guys know alot . Thanks to all of you laptop gurus out there.

If you have a chance to get the ID2, might as well get it since it has the ODD pre-installed. Otherwise you will have to create a Thumb drive Windows install from your CDs. I'm waiting for my ODD for over a week and a half since is a special order.

I would have to agree if you can afford an ID2 it may save you some trouble tracking down a drive and a bezel if you want it to look stock. There are other drives that fit the ID1 .. I have sony in one of mine.

Also my kit came with a plastic cover thing to cover the hole on the the back of the screen. I figure if it is too annoying I will put badge or 2 to cover it up. I have even considered putting a LED in there and having a back lit badge.

Yeah, I was actually reading thru this thread as I was looking on ebay. I had noticed the part about the ODD and how it was impossible to find them. I wasn't worried about installing the OS as I had thought I could use a 5 1/4 DVD drive via the e-Sata port. But couldn't I also just hook the Hard drive to my computer and partition it w/ a second small partition to put the os on and install from there?
I am still going to try hard to get the Id2, not only does it look alot cooler it comes w/ the ODD and the touch sensitive controls.

Does the ID1 at least come w/ some type of plug for the ODD hole? I dont want a gaping hole in the side of my laptop.

I had the same idea as you, getting somekind of badge and backlighting it but could not think of where to get a badge that would work.

I will just have to see what is available when I get my refund check, it seems there is only a few of these laptops available at any one time. Problem is if I get the ID2 it will be a month or 2 before I am capable of completing it. Can you imagin having the partial laptop laying around for that long and not being able to use it :(
I am looking at about $200 to complete either laptop
