Thanks, RePaRaQu!
May be that you even might now these two question - I know, they are quite special!
1.) Are there keyboad buttons for the MS-1722 for the german keyboard like äöü.. to replace the original ones, which fit? (Ever had this problem?)
2.) Normally I would use a wireless-usb-Desktop-set (keyboard & mouse) at my notebook but Vista seems not be able to handle to fast repeated char at the usb-keyboard. I changed the keyboard-time-latency (correct word?) but nothing changed
Thanks, Carl
-
Hmmm, whe order special keyboards like Qwerty, Azerty, Qwertz, and other if requested.
The keyboard latency/response well to be honest know clue, need to test this but the default latency/response should be fine for gaming and other apps. (never received a support question or other keyboard related issue) -

The actual part specs is here (Hitachi):
http://www.hepm-hitachi.com.my/hepm_products_sm.htm
Below are pics of the official drive part.
You can see how the bezel is not flat and rectangular, but a bit curvy, especially at the end.
I ordered a Sony part as reported to work to test out. I'll get it in a few days and let you know how it works out and what the installation
looks like.Attached Files:

Both BIOS and EC firmware version for the MSI GX720 and the Barebone MS-1722 are support.
BIOS 1.0R is the latest and for the EC firmware it's 4.29
We detect a while back when using wrong firmware version the hotkey buttons on the left side where flipt.
The info is correct. -
Is the BIOS/EC update procedure from Rorschach write up correct? -
[email protected] Company Representative
Yes the GX720 bios will work on the 1722:
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=135&prod_no=1521
Bios update procedure can be found here:
http://global.msi.com.tw/html/pdf/How_to_flash_MSI_Notebook_BIOS_under_DOS_mode.pdf -
Whe just use the barebone BIOS so whe can insert are own image.
But like RobM from RK COMPUTERS said it will work but make sure to flash it to the latest trough the C2D CPU to get the Quad Core running.
@RobM: whe received a new shipment which are all with BIOS 1.0R and EC firmware 4.28 ready to support Quad Core right from the BOX what's you default BIOS for the barebone? -
Thanks, Carl -
Well it's the safest way, and why not start building the quad core and no boot will end up in building twice.
No real detection on the box nor the notebook will tell you the BIOS and the EC firmware.
But the latest shipment should all be with the latest BIOS etc etc, but you still need to check this. -
I wanna thank the OP electrosoft for starting this great thread and answering my questions, Rorschach for the OC write up, Noclue4uhere for his BIOS responses and RePaRaQu for checking with MSI again about the GX720 BIOS for the 1722's.
I just setup my OC'd 1722 (Eco doesn't work in XP), and have 4 questions:
1. Do you guys leave speedstep on or off? I have it disabled and it still looks like it's active (per CPU-Z and OCCT).
2. Do you guys use MSI's video card driver or the official Nvidia driver?
3. Does the mic beside the camera record audio when you use MSI's recorder?
4. Does your SCM give an error when you shutdown? -
@trdcorolla
1: speedstep enabled
2: using the latest official driver with WHQL from Microsoft 176.92
3: Camera Recorder only records video
4: What version are you using
Extra: The MS-1722 doesn't have the touch sensitive buttons above the keyboard, this is for now only supported on the real MSI GX720 branded version. -
-
electrosoft, you wrote:
"The 1722 Supports 4gb DDR2 SODIMMS x 2, so the unit CAN support 8GB of memory. I just swapped in a pair I had. It fully registers the whole 8GB and it booted fine"
What kind of 2x4GB were you using, are they expensive?
Thanks in advance!
Carl -
trdcorolla - how did you overclock your 1722? have you got the touch sensitive button version?
-
see above,
the 1722-ID1 does not has this button,
the 1722-ID2 seems to have it, but it is very hard to find, one said it is not anymore produced.
I found (only) one at ebay (Item No.: 300290515486) so it seems to exist
Calli -
thanks Calli, but I already knew that. The reason I ask I have just received 1722 without buttons but wondered if you could enable OC via software if you updated the BIOS & firmware to gx720

electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
I've tried four pairs.
2x Dell, 2x Crucial.
The Crucial's were acting flaky. The first set didn't boot. The 2nd set I got some random BSODs. The two Dell sets (Elpida), worked great. The Crucial's acted fine in a BIOS updated Dell D830 as did the Dell's. I'm going to try them out in a bios updated Dell D630 tonight to see how they work. -

hmm thats interesting. I wonder if I can hack it so my programable button OC's
I am trying Windows 7 at the mo and SCM doesnt work properly but I will go back to vista at some point and give it a try. -
Does the 1722 id2 have a aluminum case?
I want to buy laptop, but can't decide to buy used Toshiba X205 or new MSI MS-1722 (id2 looks more pretty then id1 )
Is the anybody have any problem with build 1722?
Thanks -
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
Build is excellent. Very solidly constructed, but it is not aluminum. Definitely high grade plastic.

it looks like MSI GX720

This is the MSI GX720.

Yes, on picture is MSI GX720, MS-1722-ID2 you can see here

Another quest(-ion ,
has anybody heared or has experience with:
Intel Half Size Turbo Memory 2GB MINI PCI-E Card ??
It claims:
"Stop spending your time watching an hourglass during system boots and application loading. Look for Intel® Turbo Memory, an optional component of Intel® Centrino® Duo and Intel® Centrino® Pro processor technology:
Look for Vista*-based notebooks with new Intel Turbo Memory for up to 2X faster performance when loading frequently used, memory-intensive applications
Notebooks with new Intel Turbo Memory and Windows Vista* enable faster boot time"
So I am thinking to install this instead of a Tuner .. at the second PCIe.
Would you think it is a good idea?

to whom it may concern:
(Intel 5300-replacement)
This New Intel WiMAX/WiFi Link 5350 AGN 3x3 MIMO + 3 Antenna
can be get now at some chinese ebay shops for ~52 us$ and NO shipping costs.
I think the no-shippingg-costs are because of the chin. new year and therefor it might take longer.
8GB-Ram:
I found 8GB for GBP 149.99 (approximately US $219.42) here (2 more available)

I have the MS-1722 ID2 and the only aluminum you see on the exterior is the palm rest. Everything else on the exterior is plastic. Looking at the disassembly guide it looks like there is a large sheet of aluminum between the mobo and keyboard. You would have to dig real deep to ever see it.
On the plus side, the ID2 can be made to overclock the CPU quite easily. -
One question, on my "5" key there appears to be the "euro" symbol, why is it there and how do I get it to work? It is to the right of the 5 and % is still above.
-
Use the kay ALT GR, but this also is depending on the keyboard layout you have selected during the setup.
-
RePaRaQu is right you have to have the setup to make the "euro" symbol work
My girlfriends laptop (HP DV9000) is Dutch Version of Vista she has the Euro key that works for her
As for My "MS-1722" with Euro key with US Version of Vista key 'does not" work -
Hi guys,
I have MSI 1722-ID2.
I just did firmware update to 4.29 (Got it from Europe MSI site) after BIOS Flash (BIOS flash was fine) but no keys / power button were working after firmware update. So I turned it off with battery and Plug pulled out, and I tried turn it back on with power button, power button doesn't work.
I think Firmware update some how screwed up my buttons and I guess my power button is not power button anymore...
Anyone had any experience like this? My laptop is now basically a brick...
HELP ME~ -
Should this laptop work with a T7200 processor? I couldn't find a newer one so far in good price range, so I would like to try it with my old T7200 but I don't want to screw up things...
Thanks! -
Hi again,
has anybody tried to boot the ms-1722 with dos from an usb-stick (instead of floppy, cd, dvd, or hd) to update bios and firmware?
to create in vista such an bootable dos-stick seems to be very easy ( HowTo) and the dos from here: FreeDOS
Beside this, does the update program have an option to save the actual bios and firmware before it is updated - you never know?
Thanks in advance,
Calli -
SirKhan, I got one up and running yesterday on a T7500, so I think you'll be fine. All the naysayers that say it has to be 45 nm or it won't work were incorrect.
T7500
4 GB GSkill 667
4965AGN
Ran through 3DMark 06 and got 5001 the first run and 5012 the second using the latest drivers off LaptopVideo2Go. It is much quieter than I expected it to be. -
Thanks, I tried it, unfortunately didn't work. Luckily I was able to get a P8400 today also and works fine with this. I don't know what could have been the problem. I get 5413 points in 3dmark06 with 1280x854
About the BIOS updates: I managed to get a windows-based flasher did anyone try something like that? I don't have anything that I could use for the DOS-based updates... It would be much easier and user friendly from Windows also -

Calli:
Yeah, I use a cheesy 123mb USB Flash Drive to do BIOS/Firmware updates w/ FreeDOS across many systems. Works like a charm. Just hit F11 and choose, "Generic USB device"
SirKhan:
There are two versions of the T7200. BGA (SL9SL) and PGA (SL9SF).
The SL9SL will NOT work in the 1722, as it is the older pin out type. It will fit, but it will not boot up. I verified this earlier with the T7200 (SL9SL) in my daughter's Gateway MX8711 (GM945 chipset) in my second 1722. It will actually power off the unit after a second and won't even reach the post screen.
Outside of missing temp readings, the SL9SF *should* boot and work fine in the 1722, as it was made to be compatible with the new slightly different pin out arrangement. Which version do you have of the T7200? -
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
Installed a 7590 just to satisfy my curiosity on how it looks. Odd that they include the rear drive mounting bracket to lock in a 3rd party drive but no Bezel. With the stock Bezel, it isn't that bad, but I wouldn't enter it in a beauty contest anytime soon.

electrosoft,
I tried to find a DVD that might fit into the 1722 (bezel) and searched for a GSA-T50N.
At ebay I only found one: (Art.No. 230309105897) but if you compare the long series no. yours end up 057631 but the one from Honkong ends 023194
Anf if you look at the other (Honkong) photo above you can asume that this device (023194) does not have that MSI-bezel that would fit.
So where to get the MSI-styled bezel DVD RW and at what price?
Any hints or any links?
(by the way - due to the fact that lots of 1722 barebones are sold at ebay,
selling the special MSI-bezel-DVD could be an opportunity?)
Second question, more general and and a bit off topic:
the Intel Mobile Sockets.
I know the first for mobiles was Socket-478, then there was a Socket-479 and finally the Socket-P - and now you are saying something that therer different versions of Socket-P?
Thanks, Carl -
It looks descent .. but "electrosoft" is right before (It's like have a slightly off, mis-colored bumper on a car.)

Yeah, the Bezel for the 1722 is clearly custom designed for its chassis which is more rounded. I don't think it looks bad, but ergonomically I wouldn't enter a fashion show.
The model # on the MSI OEM unit is actually just another maker with a custom MSI bezel. It's no different than if MSI went with Sony as their unit suppliers and slapped their bezel on that one.
And the T7200 is one of the few transition CPUs where Intel made a version for two sockets so you have to make sure to check the SL code. -
Hey guys, I just tried the HDMI output on the laptop with Windows 7 and it works OK, but doesn't want to go higher than 1600x900 and I have a FullHD Samsung tv. Also, no sound is coming through the hdmi, should I install something for that or setup something in Windows?
Thanks.. -
This is a great thread. I have been following it for a few days. I am one of those bit by the ms-1722 barebones build bug as well. Never build a laptop in my life, we shall see what happens. I am not super savy like most of you but I have built several PCs. Anyhow trying to decide on a CPU now, I figure the 1722 can take most chips in the T series at and above 8300 and some of the P series like T9300 maybe even a fex X series. What about the Q series? I have read of a few of you guys with advance knowledge puting them in their systems. Is that doable from a novice like me. I am afraid of bricking my first laptop. Can you guys offer a pointers and advice. Thanks ahead of time guys.

I've used both a Q9100 and QX9300 in three 1722's no problem. Only issue is you may need a BIOS update. My last one (which arrived yesterday), yet again had the 1.0H BIOS, so I swapped in a 2.26ghz 800 CPU I "borrowed" out of a Dell D630 and it booted up so I could flash it to 1.0R. QX9300 booted up fine after that versus freezing on the Post screen.
-
gotcha, man looks Like I may have to buy a cheaper chip to load a Q baby. thanks. the price on these chips make my wallet hurt. How is that 8GB mem sticks holding up for you ELECTROSOFT? I was surprised you got your system to see them for what they really are.

electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
The Dell modules are rocking. I've used them in numerous systems now and not a failure yet. Last was a D630 to test after I removed the CPU to flash the 1722 I got in yesterday to 1.0R and put it back together. I am a bit disappointed in the Crucial sticks so far but YMMV. But in Crucial's defense, the D630, D830, HP Dragon/9000T and MSI 1722/1651 aren't listed as being compatible with their DDR2 4GB memory modules anyhow so ah well.
I'm running Dell 8GB (4GB x 2) in both my 1722 and HP and perfect so far.
I did notice on Ebay the flow of cheap 1722's is definitely slowing down. From a high of 80+ listed at one time to an average of 50-60 over the last few weeks to now down regular to ~30. Eventually they will dry up, so if someone is looking for one, better get on it now IMHO.
