Hey guys. I've been following this laptop for awhile now. I started researching it before it had been released and I've been keeping up on reviews on it ever since. I'm extremely interested in this laptop. I love the looks, the size, and the hardware. I'll be using this laptop for everything (surfing, gaming, web design, photoshop, etc).

My biggest problem right now is from what I've read in this thread (I'll be honest...I did not read all 30 pages...so maybe it's been solved?) but I run linux. I need this machine to be able to dual boot. I'll be using windows to play games, and linux for everything else. So my only concern with this laptop at the moment is the dual booting. So just wondering if anyone has been able to figure it out or not?

    Thanks,
    -RYknow

Regarding the touchpad, you can refer to this FAQ from MSI to see if the touchpad situation can be improved.

Hey guys, I have this problem where I close the lid but the laptop doesnt go to sleep. The MSI logo doesnt turn off and neither does the screen, I can still hear the fans and all. Any ideas ? I did check the power options and its set to sleep for closing the lid.

IIt goes to sleep normally, same as if I was to press the power button. I forgot to mention that I'm on win 8 if it matters

EDIT: I also tried going to the advanced power option settings are turning the "when sharing multimedia.." Option to "allow the computer to sleep" but no success

Try ending all unnecessary applications on your pc, anything like a virus scan when idle or a media based application could prevent it sleeping regardless of your option choice. The screen staying on however dose sound a bit odd.

Dont really know what else to suggest really other than to get in contact with MSI directly. You screen should switch off (including the dragon on the back) when its about an Inch from being closed. (The keyboard LEDs stays on however) Maybe the switch/sensor is misbehaving. Dose opening the lid resume it from sleep/standby?

When I manually put it to sleep, everything turns off even the keyboard LEDs and there is a flashing light above the moon.(sleep icon). I then have to press the power button to resume it from sleep mode. Opening the lid does nothing.

EDIT: Just called MSI's technical support and they couldn't find the problem. Guy typically told me to check the power options and stuff, basically everything said here. He then told me he would call me within 3 weeks if he had any solutions...woo...

EDIT2: MSI called back and asked me to reset to factory settings. If the problem persists after the format. Then it's time to ship back.

EDIT3: factory reseted. Still have issue.

For those interested in DPC Latency, I have attached a screenshot from DPC Latency Checker running on the GS70.
Have not tried to tweak drivers - only using latest drivers available from MSI.

    Fn + F6 is a toggle switch.
Do it once, and you should see the webcam in the device manager.
And then use program like Skype to use it.

    Hi all,
My GS70's SSD (RAID 0 256 GB) has some 20 GBs of stuff/data/bloatware somewhere that is taking up place but that I can't find. I know that there is a recovery partition etc. and I did uninstall a lot of bloatware (e.g. Norton). The problem is, I can't seem to find where 20 GBs of stuff is, not even if I display hidden files. I have trimmed the disk, used cleanup, registry recycler but still no clue. Anyone have the same issue or any idea? Is it something from MSI or Win 8 or am I missing something?
    Thanks!

I'm back with a new question... concerning SSDs, can anyone confirm if the SATA ports in the GS70 can support the "twin" faces of the Lite On Go 256Gb? It has two independant msata connectors on one device, so it is made of 2 units on 1 SSD (2x128 instead of 1x256). It does the same work as our Super Raid, but it only requires one port to do so. One unit achieves almost 1Gb/s in reading, 600MB/s in writing.

I can't help but want to see what can be made with 2 Lite On Go 256Gb, 4x Raid 0 instead of 2 Raid 0? It would give monstruous writing and reading speeds. Even better, 3xRaid 0 + one standalone for better latency/response/raw speed.

GS70 uses standard SATA connector for the HDD, and standard mSATA connector for the mSATA drives, each itself is a single SATA channel. If a mSATA device has twin connectors for two SATA channels then it would be a proprietary connector.
Can you list the item's link so we can see better?

Lite-On Develops Strange New mSATA SSD Design for Acer | techPowerUp It is this one.

So I might assume that if the unit is not compatible, it would either give 1x128Gb only or would not work at all? I'm not sure if I can see why the standard port can't work with the two sided faces, isn't the port in contact with the upper and lower face at the same time? Or only one side? It should do the same result as a "USB-splitter"?

P.S. H-T, I think that it is really cool to have pros like you to come over this thread to give us newbies or enthusiasts answers. Thank you.

Normally, a mini PCIe (mSATA) is a combination of SATA & USB, so the physical can be the same but implementation can be different which creates a proprietary connectivity.
PCI Express - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I checked out the product that you provided, it is using the same physical layout of mSATA.
But the mSATA interface itself is modified to have two SSD ports so if you try to use this SSD then you will probably see one SSD instead of two.

Ok, good to know. Maybe the BIOS can be updated to get full use of this feature, I wonder. I'll be receiving one soon, decent price on it. If it is not that great I can always sell it for another drive.

Sorry to diminish your hope, but it may not be fixable through a BIOS because it's a physical implementation and are wired differently.
This is achieved by combining 2 SATA channels into one connector instead of using just 1 SATA channel.

Well my hopes got diminished twice then, the seller mislabeled his product (I got a LMT256 M3M instead of a CMT). Thank you for the explanation by the way, now I won't be searching for another CMT if our rigs can't make full use of it.

I need a second LMT, regular Super Raid still looks awesome to me :)

Also encountered this although my solution came from removing a program that was recently installed.

Re-installing the program did not lead to it happening again however so it may not be the correct solution but something to consider perhaps.

Make sure you create a set of recovery discs first before switching.
Change UEFI to either Legacy, or CSM in the BIOS, then proceed with Win7 installation.

Hi all, I registered for this forum specifically to ask the experts on here a question about the MSI GS70 configuration options. I would like to purchase the MSI GS70 but am debating on which of the models to buy. I apologize if maybe this was asked by previous posters as I didn't see it when I did a search. I am mostly going to be using this laptop for movies, music, browsing, and some moderate game playing. I assume the 1TB hard drive in the 002 model is 5400rpm? I see on the 001 it's lower storage (750GB) but faster (7200 rpm) and with smaller 128GB SSD. What is everyone's opinion on the best model to go with if I am using for moderate gaming and just general activities like multimedia, web browsing, etc? Is the 002 with the additional hard storage, lower hard drive speed, but extra SSD going to give me a noticeable difference?

My wife and I both have the "lower end" GS70's. And, we specifically bought those due to the faster storage drive. I stay away from 5400rpm drives like the plague. But...just FYI...I spoke with Ken from Gentech and he indicated accessing the drives through the bottom panel isn't a difficult procedure. Just a few screws and you're done. So, if you go for the top end GS70, you can always consider upgrading the storage drive if it's a problem for you.

Like holliday777 said upgrade HDD is quite easy on GS70 (19 screws). :)

which model to get is really up to you, is 128GB SSD enough for your OS + softwares? if not then get the 002US which has dual 128GB mSATA SSDs in RAID-0. Performance wise the 002US with RAID-0 is faster than a single SSD on 001US.

I see that XOTIC PC is offering the 002 but with the opportunity to upgrade the HD to 1 TB 7200rpm for a little more $$$. I thought about going that route. Seems like XOTIC gets a lot of great reviews. Anybody have issues with this company from past experience?

So I recently updated my GS-70 to Windows 8.1 and the touchpad responds while in the lock screen, but once I log on, it fails to work.

I had just updated the touchpad to the latest drivers before the 8.1 update and it was working fine, should I re install the drivers or is there some setting that I have to tick in order for the touchpad to work again?

Had the same problem this morning after upgrading. Uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled and it is working fine now.

Under 8.1, Bluetooth audio under device manager still isn't working right for me. Supposedly Killer is coming out with new drivers very soon to address bluetooth issues.

    Greetings,

I've had my GS70 for about 2 months now and am having an issue with the screen touching the keyboard.

I'm typically carrying the laptop around in the nylon case that came with it. Placing that inside my North Face Router backpack with text books in the other compartment.

Thing is that dust from the keyboard is leaving a outline of the keys on the screen itself.

I was thinking screen protector or some kind of soft felt like material that I could place between the screen and keys when closing the laptop.

    Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

This is a common issue for almost every laptop, but there's already a solution for this.
It was designed for Mac but it wouldn't matter if you used it on others.
It is a mat from RadTech that you put on the keyboard before closing your screen, and it is better than silicone solution because silicone still can leave prints on the screen.

Google for "RadTech ScreenSavrz for 17-Inch WideScreen Notebooks - Gray".

    Hi guys,

I've had my GS70 for a few months now. When I first got it, it had Windows 8 on it, and it was the first time using Win 8 and I tried to get used to it (learn to love it I suppose). At the end I couldn't stand it and slapped on Win7 on it. I had no problem installing and without researching I deleted all the partitions and wiped everything for a clean install of Win7.

I just found out today after reading the forum that the Win8 recovery and installation stuff is in one of the partitions. I was wondering is there a way to install Win8 back again? Since there is Win8.1 I wanted to try and give it a shot again.

    thanks guys in advance
