Honestly I have mine set to intel preferred. I would rather turn on the 765 in the control panel for the few games that need it. The intel gpu is getting toonlittle creditNo indie game needs it. Ray man origins is perfect . Defense grid.... brothers... Hell the color controls are better
Of course borderlands 2 rocks on the nvidia![]()
-
I agree. I don't want the nvidia gpu to come on unless I am at my desk plugged into 2 external monitors. I currently have the preferred graphics processor set to integrated graphics under the global settings under manage 3d settings of the nvidia control panel.
And still even when I click on file explorer on the taskbar the power button switches to orange for a second. There is also a delay in opening file explorer when this happens. I removed the winzip shell extension. I don't know if it could now be Avast shell extension. Still trying to figure that out. Might try to install nvidia test tool to see if that shows what is turning on the gpu.
-
I keep answering my own questions. Hope this helps others with these concerns. File Explorer stops turning on the nvidia GPU if you uncheck "Add run with graphics processor to the context menu" under desktop menu option in the Nvidia Control Panel.
-
Has anyone done a GPU upgrade yet on one of these???
TIA! -

Well, it looks like the only critical flaw of this machine is that its impossible to do virtual machines properly, which I need. I am out of my 30 day warranty at Newegg, but just barely. I still have 710 days of replacement waranty at MSI but that won't help.
Anyone want to buy an essentially brand new GS70 for $1700? that's $200 off of retail, still has warranty. I apologize if this is the wrong board for this sort of post and i'll remove it if asked. -

Gotcha!
Not a big problem... as if I find this isn't enough for me.. which I am sure it is more then enough, I will get a desktop. -
Ok, so... I got it!
It is sexy as can be!
I will post a full review thread on it later... but for now... I am noticing that the following keys have no "under lit" lights on: F1, F7-F9, F11, INSERT, DELETE, `&~, NUM LOCK, /, *, TAB, 8, CAPS LOCK, ENTER, 5, SHIFT L, ALT L
Also, keys with missing/dull lighting are: F12(kind of), PGDN & END, BACKSPACE, -, 4, 6, SHIFT R, UP ARROW, 2, CRTL L, SPACE BAR IS REALLY BAD(ONLY ONE LIGHT ON THE FAR RIGHT IS ON, ENTER R.
Honestly, it isn't a HUGE killer to me, and I am not even sure if they are supposed to NOT be like this... but it really isn't the best on the eyes being able to see the inconsistencies in the keyboard. If anyone else could possibly take a look at theirs and see if theirs are also missing under lights on any keys... I may just send this back if no one else has this problem.. or if this is just how it is... the actual letters/numbers/symbols are fine... just those under lights are whats wrong.
But besides the keyboard... this laptop looks so sexy and is super light! -
My keyboard lighting is exactly the same.

I've seen a few people have rolled back to Win7. I'm interested in doing this, but am curious what/where they found all the drivers and if I need to roll the bios to the Win7 version.
Any help from those that have accomplished this would be fantastic. -

you are the FIRST person who has reported any success, please help me out if you can. So far I have gotten VMWare installed, but I am primarily using virtualbox. On this superuser thread I have outlined my problem and what I have tried, I'll repost it here.

Anyone have the original restore partition? My friend accidentally deleted it while installing windows 7 and we are wondering if anyone can supply the file online or if we can pay them to make a restore DVD or USB.

I generally am not using 3D aware apps in my VMs....mostly I'm testing regular business apps. As I mentioned, in my experience, regular 2D VMs perform perfectly.
I did just boot up a Win7x64 VM (VMware Workstation 9) and installed ATITool ( Download ATITool 0.26 | techPowerUp). It runs in the VM and uses the virtual 3D (click on Show 3D view), but it is jittery (compared to running outside the VM). Is that the problem you're having? -
Anyone know anything about the Battalion M1771 rebrand of the GS70 from iBuyPower?

That may be the problem I am having, but I am only using 3d capability for the stock Ubuntu and Linux Mint desktop environments. I believe they are 3D accelerated? I also just need business apps and a web browser, but these regular desktop environments run impossibly slow and jittery.
Also, I am trying to run a normal OSX environment and it is unusably slow and jittery on a stock desktop environment.
So no, I don't need 3D apps, but maybe linux mint, Ubuntu and OSX need the feature anyway? -
If everything on your computer is working fine, except you are having problems with your virtualization software, I'd focus your attention on the software itself. Make sure the software is installed correctly and supports Windows 8. Try reinstalling your VMs. From inside your VMs, try running diagnostics. Are they having performance problems with video, disk, memory?
In any case, if you plan to call MSI with a support issue, you'll really want to find a failing diagnostic test on your laptop itself and ignore the Virtualization software. -

Does anyone have specifics on how to update the bios for this machine. I tried to follow the instructions on their website however I was stuck at where they wanted to diable secure boot. I'm not seeing the option where to disable it in the bios.

holliday777 Notebook Evangelist
There is a batch file in the bios downloadable...the exact name escapes me...but I have successfully applied to two most recent bios flashes to what is now my wife's GS70. Extract the bios files into a folder and check the batch files in that folder.

has anyone else had an issue with the new touchpad driver? I installed it just before and it seems my 2 finger scrolling no longer works. went in to see if the gestures were on and they definitely were....
Any ideas? -
Was checking out the BIOS settings when I changed UEFI to Legacy. Now I cant even boot it up, after realizing I cant go directly to BIOS from boot up to change the setting back. Tried F3, but that doesn't seem to do anything.
Anyone know how I can fix this? -

Even with the virtualization extensions turned off, on this hardware(even on three year old HW with enough RAM), performance should be quite good. My guess is there is something else going on here. -

I wish there was a list of "how to fix your laptop".
I love the gs70 and seem to be one of the 5 people who love windows 8 (using srsrIsback). But these crazy driver hoops are insane in 2013 -
My two finger scroll works under the new driver, but I got mine from this link
MSI Product Spec.
The version seems to be the same.

Hi Guys,
From 30th of September of 2013 I am a happy owner of the new MSI GS70. For the moment I want to share with the you the buying experience and in a few days I will also post a video showing the beast.
I live in Europe and for a few months I was looking to replace my current work notebook( Dell Inspiron 1750, yeah I know, damn old ). After having some unpleasant surprises with an Asus G75VX I decided to take the time until I will find the notebook I want.
I saw a few resellers from US but only one caught my eye, this was GentechPC. I send an email to GenTechPC with me asking for additional informations regarding 2 notebooks: Asus G750JX and MSI GS70. Ken from GentechPC replied straight to the point but still i couldn't decide, so I called Ken and asked for more details about those two( but also because I rather like to talk with someone using the phones than using emails).
In the end I decided to buy the MSI GS70( the model with 128 mSATA, 750GB) and opted for a screen replacement, 90% NTSC Color Gamut, Glossy, because I am using Photoshop and honestly i don't like how Matte displays the colours.
After reading on another forum about missing screws and the noise level( MSI GS70 2OD-002US Fan Noise - Overclockers Forums ) i got really scared that it might happen to me too, because we are talking about sending back a notebook from Europe to US so again money and money. I called Ken and asked him if I can pay extra for the "IC Diamond 24 Carat Thermal Compound on both CPU/GPU" and he said "Yeah, no problem Mario", and I said, "But Ken, please make sure that you check the heat sink screws and also make sure that everything is working as it should cause i really don't want the hassle of sending the notebook back too US" and he again "Yeah no problem Mario" ( i can hear it even now
)) )
After 8 days I got the notebook from GenTechPC and everything turned to be perfect. I really counted the days for the notebook. Now I want to cover some things that have been spoken and other that were not( I will also post videos for each of them later this week ):
1) Yeah i have the same light problems on F7, F8, F9, Enter and so on, but honestly i work with the light on so no big issue here and after seeing that
other users have the same problem, until MSI says otherwise, we can say that this is how it was build.
2)The noise on the MSI GS70 ? Honestly i had for 2 weeks an Asus G75VX and that its a really noisy notebook. So the first thing i compared when i started to get a closer look on the system was the noise from my old notebook versus the MSI GS70.
For me is the same noise level, this when doing Photoshop, Browsing, coding PHP and web development in general. This is really extraordinary. On games? How is the noise level, well the fans start rolling, but honestly when i am playing i either have the external speakers working or i use headphones and i can't hear any fan)))). But yes when playing games it is making noise.
3) 90% NTSC Color Gamut Screen. Ken told me that the screen is really good, but i had to see with my own eyes. It has a really big wide angle for viewing and i am really impressed and i congratulate myself for opting to change the screen. Hopefully it will last for at least 3 years of hard work.
4) "IC Diamond 24 Carat Thermal Compound on both CPU/GPU"
I've done the same test that the GentechPC did on youtube, Furmark, cause i was curious about the GPU temperature, honestly my highest temperature was 84 or 85 Celsius. It is either that i did something wrong or the cooling and the paste did the job. I will try to do the test for an entire 60 minutes and i will post the results.
5) The keyboard works perfectly( I've used the the notebook for around 20 hours and no shift or other keys) I've also send Ken from Gentech an email with the youtube video and the squeaky shift key and asked to check it before sending it)
So almost 2 days passed and everything is good. I am very satisfied with how GenTechPC handled my order, even though i had to make a few international calls, i honestly don't regret it cause in the end it was about a notebook that
costs a really big bag of money and also that for the next 3 years it will be my main workstation
I hope I haven't bored anyone with my experience.
PS: Thank you Ken, Thank you GenTechPC for my first US online major purchase

Docace911,
The instruction says to remove existing driver first, then install the new driver after.
Have you tried that? -
How do you use the F3 recovery key? I press it when the laptop is loading but nothing ever happens. I would like to have a clean install of Windows 8. I have another product key from my school but it doesn't work because MSi Windows 8 keys are OEM. Can anyone tell me what's the best way to do a fresh install of the OS?

Hello guys,
I'm new here! First post (I'll check ASAP if there is a "Members presentation" section, I'm on my phone right now).
My GS70 is coming this afternoon, I can't wait for it.
I did order a version with just the 750Gb 7200rpm (got a really good deal on it) so I'm searching for two SSD by myself. Does anybody know how much it can take per msata port?
I got my eyes on two Lite On 256gb SSD, do you think that it can take them? Or is the GS70 limited to 2x128? -

It doesn't seem like there's any pics or video of repasting on the GS70. Does anyone know where I can find any pictures or videos on it?

Please HELP!
So I spent last night and all of today trying to fix my bluetooth. The bluetooth cannot be seen or see any devices. My other windows 7 laptops work fine, so I don't think it is my devices (I have tried samsung galaxy s3 and blackberry). I just did a recovery back to factory settings to see if something changed because I hadn't tested it in the 3 weeks I have owned this laptop. No luck.
Things I have tried;
Full factory recovery
I have uninstalled the killer software and drivers.
Reinstalled the MSI version.
Tried the latest killer off their website (now at least the drivers load and their are no issues in device manager.)
But in the event viewer I still get a message that "A command sent to the adapter has timed out. The adapter did not respond."
Does anyones work? Do I just have a bad adapter?
Also running latest BIOS 709.
