Can you point me in the direction of the beta driver for the touchpad? I'm interested in trying it out.

Just ordered this laptop, should be here by Tuesday :) Could anybody clarify the max RAM supported, I presumed it was only 16GB but on overclockers.co.uk it claims 32GB. Cheers!

Having 16 is nice if you run office, tons of plugins like endnote, multiple browsers, steam runnjng, lightroom and you have room for. Nice 2gb RAM disk for temp files and Internet history etc. 8gb is fine for gaming.

Win8 will use all your ram if you have it.

I read on NewEgg that I could get an updated driver for the touchpad by emailing you. Thanks!

sort of. i managed to set up dualboot. ubuntu itself is not working correctly here yet. seems like i have some chaos with the 2 graficcards. but i'm sure this is solvable. i document my experience in setting up here: linux on gs70 experience
hope to get it running soon. so if all other linux-heads around join forces and share their solutions we'll be up and running very soon... let me know about your progress so i can publish them also.

Anyone try to edit the fan tables? I don't understand why the fan is on so high at idle with the temperatures so reasonable. Scared to try :)

It plays BF3 on High-Ultra pretty well at about 30 FPS, so I'm guessing it'll play BF4 on Medium-High at around 30-40 FPS. It's probably worth it for the portability.

I just bought the Microsoft MT bag. It's pretty nice, I am going to be flying a lot so the checkpoint features are super nice. Very nice bag and build quality. I got mine at the store for 42$ (originally 90$) can be had off amazon ( http://tinyurl.com/p2olamg)

I don't have the laptop yet, it should be here today or tomorrow...hopefully it fits...according to the dimensions it does...but barely...probably can't use the msi sleeve with it, but that's not really needed.

I went for the Crumpler Dry Red No 8.

    Dry Red No 8

It is a perfect fit and doesn't feel like a huge laptop bag (unlike the MSI backpack that came with it).

    My runner ups were:

CaseLogic 17.3" Laptop and Tablet Case - DLC-117-BLACK | Caselogic

    and

The Tom Bihn Empire Builder: Empire Builder - 3 years of R&D went into this laptop briefcase - TOM BIHN

Guys, help me to choose a powerful multimedia laptop. I am looking at GS70 at the moment and I would already have bought it if it had an option to upgrade CPU to 4800mq. I am not a gamer, I am going to do a lot of video streaming and I am not sure about 4700mq, will it be enough?

I think the CPU is overkill for your needs. Transcoding (say blu ray to m4v or mkv mpeg 4 ) tasks wih quicksync is much faster than my desktop i7- 965.

    MSI GS70 owners,

Have any of you guys purchased the MSI GS70 w/ IC Diamond Thermal Compound?
I'm wondering what benefits we can see from doing this customization. I know other customers for different notebooks are experiencing 6-7 C drop under load which is amazing.

Will it void warranty if purchased like this from resellers such as GenTechPC?

if you are running Steam, you have to tell it to use Steam on the Integrated graphics via the nVidia control panel. Steam uses the nVidia 'amber' gpu by default.

So, you thingk that 4700mq will be enough to stream 2 or 3 football games on hd at the same time?
I also think that Killer network will also help in that regard.

Before biting the bullet, I'm hungering for some answers to these questions as well. Hopefully someone will be able to answer!

    1) How is the sound quality versus a dolby home theater v4
    2) Will a notebook cooling pad help this laptop? I notice the intake vents are up top rather than at bottom
    3) Will it overheat if I close the lid but leave the laptop on?

I think you will be able to stream at least 5 HD videos at the same time with 4700MQ ;)
There's not a big difference between 4700 and 4800 and also with 4800 you may get higher temps and i dont recommend it to you 'cause this laptop already gets hot with 4700... GPU Temp is amazingly ok ~75°C but CPU temps ~85-95°C with factory compound.

I'm also having the same issue as that other guy. Kinda.

Changed the Steam to integrated, worked great for a while. White light/amber light switching and everything whenever I play a game. BUT! if I leave my computer sitting (no programs running,, so the light is white) and it goes off into hibernate mode, when it turn it back on, the light turns orange, and stays orange, even when I tell NVDIA the to make the prefered GPU the integrated one.

Only way for me to fix the light is if i shut down the computer and restart it that way. Then it'll function normally.

Sp my problem now is that I can't tell whether or not it's the power light controler that is broken (i.e. not accurately reflecting what GPU is being used) or if the GPU really did switch over to the nVIDIA one and is not switching back over the the integrated.

Tried reinstalling SCM (that's the program that controls the power light...I think) and updating/reverting the nVdia driver. None of that has really worked.

So any insight would be greatly appreciated.

SCM and KLM all have bad habits of using the GPU. Not sure why. But I usually kill them and reopen them and I'm back to using the iGPU.

I WAS WONDERING IF IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE TO UPGRADE 1 OF THE 2 SSD's IN THE HIGHEST GS70 MODEL TO A BIGGER ONE (DIFFERENT BRAND AND SIZE/NOT THE OS DRIVE). AND HOW WOULD I GO ABOUT DOING IT/DIFFICULTY WISE. ALSO MAYBE UPGRADING THE 5400 RPM DRIVE TO A 7200 ONE. SIMPLE AS POPPING IT IN AND AND BOOTING UP? OR WOULD IT BE A BETTER IDEA TO RUN GAMES OFF AN EXTERNAL SSD 3.0 DRIVE (NO eSATA  ). I GOT ONE DAY SHIPPING AND ITS ARRIVING TODAY :) SO EXCITED! :hi2: AND HELLO IM NEW. LOVE THIS FORUM, THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP.

Well first we need to figure out the problem with your caps lock key :p

The GS70 is not designed to be user upgradable which means its not as easy as their other models but it can be done with someone who knowns what they are doing. The parts still use standard connectors.

I am interested in purchasing an MSI gaming laptop and the GS70 is the front runner. I have a few questions/concerns that I was hoping could be answered here.

Is it the type of trackpad that the whole area depresses when clicked or just the front area?

How is the quality of the display on this laptop?

Are there any negative consequences to the battery for having this unit plugged in all the time? (capacity/longevity reduced etc.)

I will be using this computer primarily to stream movies/videos and play games (Diablo 3, League of Legends, Borderlands 2, etc). Also, I am looking at the GT60/70 2OC series laptops as other options. Any input as far as those models are concerned? I hear they are quite bulky and heavy, but that is to be expected out of such a powerful laptop.

HP recommends store the battery 40% charged, if you gonna leave your notebook on your desk.
The other brands can be slightly different

I just want to know whether GTX 765m can handle 3 monitors working with SolidWorks, Office and Internet without lagging.

It will not void any warranty if we do the upgrades for you.

However, this is the only model that MSI doesn't like end-users open it up.

I like the GS70 but the first one I bought from Newegg had a dent in side of the laptop, the bottom was warped and the lid switch didn't work. The box was undamaged, but the laptop was damaged. I contacted Newegg for an exchange. They issued an RMA. They had my laptop for 2 weeks before they finally said it was my fault and they wouldn't do anything (and I have been a Newegg customer since they started). They sent it back.

I then contacted MSI. They issued an RMA I am fairly confident they will replace it. My son is getting this laptop. I ordered another from Bestbuy and it is perfect.I have purchased laptops from Bestbuy in the past and if there is an issue you can exchange.

I will never buy from Newegg again, not even a $5 cable. Newegg is ridiculous. They have lost my business, the business of my employer (a University), the business of all of my outside clients and my friends and family. Newegg will go out of business with this type of customer service.

Hey ppl! Just want to give some feedback regarding the fan on the GS70.

Mine sounds like the CPU is doing work, when in fact it's doing nothing special at all. CPU utilization is at around 0 to 1%, but still, the fan generates enough noise for me to think about it constantly.
If it was doing stuff, then fine, make some noise... This thing wines about being powered on!

If the machine was of a cheaper kind, then maybe I would live with it. But this thing costs too many moneys for me not to care.
Give me silence! Give me serenity!

Does anybody have problems of running Origin on GS 70? I just bought a humble bundle but after I installed the origin client, it crashes at startup. I tried to search online for a solution, but I could not find any yet.

The fans are all the time on, that is correct. It is not too loud, but the machine is louder than my Alienware 18 where the fans most of the time complete off in office mode!

But, the CPU temperatures of my GS70 are between 37 and 40 degree ... at my AW18 around 55 degree ... so they took the way, to keep the machine cool ...

The trackpad depresses in the front (with L/R separation) and the display is great on mine.

There is a battery calibration tool included they suggest running every three months. I plan to leave mine plugged in most of the time, if there's a long term issue, it will take a while to find it anyways.

Have updated the BIOS to version 707; I have the RAID version, so I chose to download w8_E1771IMS.707.zip - the notes say RAID mode.

Once the zip archive was done unpacking, I ran the FLASHWIN64.BAT while still inside of the Windows 8 Operating System. The fans maxed out while the flashing procedure was doing its thing.
Once done, (and if I remember correctly) it automatically turned off the computer.
