Looks like the issue might be related to DC jack, or the mainboard itself.

    Great, excellent job!

I love this thing, but I feel that the framerates, etc are a little less impressive than I had hoped. Has anyone found out if there is a way to swap out the GTX765m for a 770 or 775? Since the notebook is offered with better GPU options, I would venture to guess that changing them out should be possible. I just wonder where one would acquire the card(s) that fit our machines...? Any ideas are welcomed. My google and forum searches have turned up little to nothing so far. Thanks!

You can't swap but you can overclock and reach the level of a gtx770m

@Andrew_wot: Soldered, eh? Bummer. I wonder if there are places that do these types of upgrades, or if it's even worth looking into.

@Hakxe: I have years of experience with building and using all sorts of PCs, but have not really entered the overclocking territory until recently (never had the need/desire until now). Do you know what sort of settings I can get away with without damaging things on the GS70? Should I just mess with Afterburner?

I'm hoping someone can help me with updating BIO for this machine. there are two files under the bioupdate download tab for MSI's global website. they are both for Win8.1, which I have installed. One is for UEFI RAID0 SKU and the other one is for UEFI None RAID SKU. How do I find out which file to use? How do I find out that I have RAID or not?

My model is the MSI GS70 2OD-229US from Newegg. For some reasons the link function is not working . . . Here is the address for the product specification from newegg: MSI GS70 2OD-229US Intel Core i7 12GB Memory 17.3" Notebook - Newegg.com

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!

Weird non standard model, must be newegg specific. 99% non raid, if you have only 128GB SSD - 100%

Alright, my Samsung Galaxy S4 phone works fine with GS70 after BIOS update, but my tablet still has the same problem. My tablet model is Galaxy Note 10.1 (2012 edition n8013). I think there are just some issues with Samsung device and GS70. I don't know what else I can install or update to fix this.

I am using NVIDIA inspector (to be confirmed I'm not at home atm) and mine takes +135mhz at core (max allowed by the tool) and +700mhz at memory for a total of 5400mhz. I did not reach the memory limit yet.

That s a very decent boost in1080p where bandwidth is the bottleneck.

    Works rock stable.

    Hello All,

I'm trying to update the BIOS on the MSI GS70 20D-229US that I just got from Newegg a couple days ago.

I have never updated BIOS before and was wondering if I someone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it!

First question is that in the MSI site I'm seeing the UEFI RAID and none RAID option. I'm thinking that my version is the none RAID version. However, I'm asking just to be safe! Thanks.

Second question is that I was able to find the step by step Windows 8 bios update pdf guide from MSi that was made back in December 2012. However, the link that was suppose to provide me with the relevant files to create a EFI bootable flash drive was dead, so I was wondering if anybody here has the file or can advice an alternative, less complicated way to update BIOS on my machine. here is the link to MSI's step by step guide for your reference, the dead link is under Part 1 Procedure 2 - the nbdriver-1978.html link.

    http://www.msi.com/files/pdf/Win8_BIOS_Update_Step_by_Step_Guide.pdf

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciate it! Thank you very much for your time and suggestions.

You could try installing Android Studio (or just the Android SDK) as an easy way to get Google's Android USB driver.

I believe all their updates are in .bat/.exe files so you shouldn't need to worry about a bootable usb device.

@nonsuchsol - does that mean that all I have to do is to unzip the file and run the .bat/.exe file? run both? or just whatever I see in extracted folder?

I'm a novice at updating BIOS. I have heard that if one does not do it correctly the result might be a bricked system. I would really appreciate it if anyone can tell me what I can do to update the BIO. Thanks!

    Hey Project,

I don't have my RMA back yet, but it should arrive monday. There was a certain .bat file (out of the two or three choices) that I ran to do the fan table and the bios, but I can't verify until I get it back and do it all over. (Getting a replacement for a crazy fan wobble/rattle @ the CPU fan. I will say that MSI's .zip's aren't as straight forward as they could be for instructions. This is my first expensive laptop, but I've been wrecking desktops for two decades.

There are a few rebranded GS70's out there. That appears to be the most expensive of the bunch. CyberpowerPC and iBuypower are also selling them but at different prices and specs (for the most part - usually a ram and hdd issue). I don't recommend CyberpowerPC based solely on their sales and customer service. I emailed them twice about the lack of an option to upgrade to 16gb of RAM and never received an email back. *shrug* The guys here - Gentechpc have been on top of it and they offer real world upgrades to your laptop.

You can update the BIOS and EC firmware with ease.
    1. Download each packages to your system, unzip it one by one.
    2. There's a FLASHWIN.BAT in the BIOS package, simply double-click on it to run (UAC may need to be disabled).
    3. For EC firmware, double-click on Autoflash.exe to proceed.
    4. Once EC is updated, shut off the system, and use a needle to poke into the hole on the right side toward the front to perform EC reset.
    5. Power on the system, press DEL to enter BIOS, verify version numbers under System Information to see if everything's up-to-date.

    Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone would help me out with my new GS70. I noticed that when I connect the laptop onto a bigger monitor to watch videos online, the video would lag. Like the picture would freeze for a second or two, then play really fast until the delay was caught up. This is not a network issue because I use the same wifi network on my old computer and such lag never really existed before.

Could it be a software issue? setting? Windows issue? My video driver is updated and running normally.

my old rig is a Windows 7 and never had this problem. Could this be a bug in Windows 8? I hope this is not a hardware issue because my old computer never had this problem and the GS70 has a much superior hardward specs than my old laptop (The one that the GS70 is meant to replace) but it feels like the old computer is running a lot smoother than the GS70.

I tried to only video stream on the laptop screen or with an external monitor, but the problem persists.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time and help!

Wonder if GS70 2OD-001US, GS70 2OD-229US and the GS70 2OD-002US all use the same motherboard. If so does the GS70 2OD-001US and GS70 2OD-229US support SuperRaid? And if it does'nt I wonder if its just as simple as flashing the bios for UEFI RAID0 SKU to GS70 2OD-001US.

Could someone who has an GS70 2OD-002US and someone who has an GS70 2OD-001US or GS70 2OD-229US check your motherboard model? (Run a tool like belarc advisor)

Yes! cloned view under the Nvidia options because Windows 8 option will not give me cloned view. Could this be the cause? given the superiority of the hardware? My Asus laptop was way inferior in terms of specs and it handled cloned view on the same external monitor and 50 inch TV with no flaws.... I'm really hoping this lagg is not due to hardware limitations . . . Any advices?

thanks for the help! I greatly appreciate it.

I actually called MSI support and asked that question. I think from what I could understand 229 uses a different board than 001 and 002. He was talking really fast and was throwing in all these technical terms that I was a little bit confused. But I think the main differences are the hard drive capacity and the RAMs. From what I could comprehend, the motherboards are different because of the HD capacity.

To be safe, give them a call. I'm a novice at computer so maybe someone with more technical knowledge in the field would not be confused when talking to the MSI rep. Please let us knows what he said in case you call!

MSI won't give you real advice on such an issue. It's not a user upgrade. They will only talk about what models will come with stock.

Simply set the monitor you want to use to show the best quality as the primary monitor then verify the difference.

Just got back from an 3 week vacation. My laptop battery LED indicator started to flash orange when I powered it on. Pulled out the power plug and the laptop shut off by it self. I tried a battery calibration using MSI's program, the laptop shuts off after it begins to calibrate the battery. This never happened ever, I've had the laptop for months and never has anything like this happened before.

    Hello Harman

Uninstall skype app from the windows store and download the full version. I had problems with my cameras using the windows apps skype and a full installation solved the issue.

Also, if you have the SCM program came preloaded with your machine, you can open that and turn the webcam on.

As for the cds/disks. if you really need it on your laptop you can also invest in an external usb drive. It shouldn't be expensive

Can people list the bags they are using where the laptop actually fits without the corners of the laptop poking out at the top. I just bought an Everki glide 17.3 inch bag and it barely zipped up so I have returned it. Is this laptops 17.3 not a "normal" 17.3?

Have you allowed the battery to fully charge itself?
It must had been drained completely while sitting inside of laptop.
For this type of battery, they should never be drained completely or else it can suffer.

Why not try to contact MSI and see if you can work out a warranty exchange of just the battery? Tell them you'd be happy to remove the battery yourself, or at a local service center of their choosing, after they send you a new battery. Couldn't hurt to ask, right?

Sure you can, but you wouldn't want to keep on going like this without getting it resolved.
Best to call and get a RMA# first and send the system in when you can afford the down time.
Their RMA# is usually valid for 30 days.

Hello, been stalking this thread for a while... anyone know where i can find a better power supply (More watts)
and if i do get a power supply with more watts will it damage the laptop?
Im getting CPU throttling issues due to not enough power (hybrid power runs outta battery after 3-4 hours)
on long gaming sessions and or when leave it mining (Dogecoin) while I go to work.
also im running OC 3.2 ghz and 1032mhz on graphics temps below 84 on Liquid pro thermal paste

Check Amazon or Ebay for a MSI power adapter for the GT60 or other using a 780M GPU.

    Output: 19V DC, 180W
    Input: 100~240V AC, 50/60Hz universal

    vs.

    Output: 19V DC, 120W
    Input: 100~240V AC, 50/60Hz universal

Using 180 to 220W AC adapter will not damage your laptop.
But the other way around, the laptop may not also benefit from the additional capacity from it.
Additionally, larger capacity also equals to heavier weight unless your NB is stationary most of the time.

    Hello All,

After owning GS70 for about less than a month I have noticed that sometimes my MSI wont boot up into Windows 8. It would get stuck on the MSI logo page without the little loading circle appearing. It would just stuck at the logo page. I had to force restart it. Sometimes after I force restart it would boot in the normal tile page, but the Desktop Tile would not be responsive. I then had to restart using the task manager restart button. (each shutdown I would usually unplug the power source and I would plug it back in before turning on the laptop.

Should I be worried of hardware issues? Or is it more of a Windows 8 Issues? Dose anyone had similar problems before? any suggestions or advices to finding a resolution would be greatly appreciated it. This problem did not occur until recently, and the number of occurrence is increasing. Thank you all for your help!

    Try to disable Fast Startup
Disable Windows 8 fast startup (hibernate file)

You are the only one that can answer that question. If you need a laptop right now, this one is great. If not, and you are concerned about new models, then wait and see what gets released. It really is an easy decision.
