You will need to considering these factors, value/performance/durability/service/warranty.
Plus, the need to research more on Razer because they are only a start-up with computer products.

Sounds like you need to send it in under warranty.

    Hi everybody!

I've read the whole thread but unfortunately couldn't find calibrated settings for brightness, contrast, gamma etc either for nvidia control panel or intel color settings (one chap on page 11 promised to post them but he didn't :(). Personally I find screen a bit too bright and lacking contrast but I can't manually adjust all this sliders so as to achieve nice result (especially if I try to set values for each color channel separately). Could someone post the preferences?

By the way is there any possibility to adjust screen sharpness for a laptop display?

    Hello !

Does anyone had issues with the GS70 Stealth touchpad ? Mine just doesn't work when the AC power is plugged in. When it is not plugged it works fine, but as soon as I plug the AC in, the touchpad lag/freeze for a few seconds then completely stops working. Everything goes back to normal when I unplug the AC. The touchpad is enabled in the Control Panel. Updating the ELAN drivers doesn't work.

Any ideas ? Does anyone had the same issue ? Maybe an option I overlooked ? Or simply a malfunctioning AC power ?

    Thanks !

You can adjust brightness via power settings but that's about it. The rest needs color profile, but you can also tinker with NVidia control panel.

If you cant find a profile and dont have any calibration tools the best thing you can do is open the built in color calibration thats in Windows. You can find that by clicking on the Windows start button and search for "calibration" Once you have that up and going you can open up Nvidia Control Panel, select "Adjust desktop color settings", and click the "Use Nvidia settings" then adjust accordingly.

When I use the MSI BurnRecovery to make a USB recovery disk, I get to the screen where it says I need 16gb available. After putting in a 32GB USB drive (also tried a 16GB, and 64GB drives), the continue button is greyed out. I can't keep going? Is there something I need to do to make a bootable USB Recovery drive?

Okay, I read in the previous messages that USB drive needs to be the D: drive? Is that correct? Right now my SSD is set as D.

Hey Kevin, I feel like you might be able to help me out here.

I've been getting this "Windows Explorer Ran Into A Problem" message about once everyday since I got my GS70 last week. Do you or anyone here have any idea what might be causing this error and what I can do to fix it? Here is a screen shot of what it says when I click for more details. Any feedback would be really nice guys, thanks!

Just to add on to my last post.. Literally within five minutes while I was just on my desktop screen I got another error message, and it looks like its a different path (I'll provide the screen shot). So it seems like it is happening more frequently than once a day now, and it always happens randomly and unprovoked, usually while I'm not even actively using my computer (when it's just open on my desk). Please guys, any help would be great. Thanks!

Why don't you google for it? :D
Report should contain detailed information on the problem, most likely some system libraries got corrupted, could be dying HDD as well. Run disk check and windows recovery.
Doubt it's GS70 specific to post question here.

I did google it, but it wasn't helpful :/ so I figured I'd ask a real person who could probably help me :) The screenshots I provided are the most detailed information I could get out of pressing "more info" so I'm still not sure what to do. Also if it makes a difference in this situation then I should probably point out I have the RAID 0 configuration with the two SSD and my HDD is still completely empty.

Can you tell us what BIOS & EC version you have? And the version of Intel HD and Nvidia drivers from Programs and Features?
Did you update your OS to Win8.1?

What's considered a reasonable temperature for the CPU while gaming? I've noticed mine will go up to the mid-90s which seems too hot to me. The GPU however, usually stays below 80, mostly in the upper 60s and into the mid 70s, so that looks alright, but the CPU seems a little toastier than it should be.

You should try to undervolt the CPU. Use Intel XTU (Extreme Tuning Utility) -> http://www.intel.com/content/www/us...p-boards-software-extreme-tuning-utility.html

I noticed a significant drop in temps (8-10C) across all CPU loads. And mine is only -100mV (undervolted).

My BIOS is version "E1771iMS.705" and EC version "1771EMS1 ver5.08". The Intel HD driver is version 9.18.10.3131 and the Nvidia driver is version 332.21 I did not update to Windows 8.1 still have Windows 8

I saw on MSI's website that there were driver updates for tons of things like Wifi and Bluetooth and the Touchpad etc. are any of these driver updates necessary/important? I also saw there was a BIOS update, is updating necesary?

    Thanks again!

All updates are required before updating the system to Win8.1.
    BIOS, EC, and Win8.1 drivers.
Your BIOS is outdated because the current version is 70E and EC is fine at 1.508.

Looking to add a 1TB 2.5" SSD drive to the GS70. Is there anything I need to know? Does it need to be a special height or can I use a regular 2.5" SSD.

Hey guys I checked my BIOS and I have version E1771IMS.50C should I update to 50E or 70E ?

Also, I was having some issues booting up Linux Mint Live from my usb 3.0 drive and I had to switch UEFI to Legacy is there a reason why? Anyone here dual-booting Windows8.1 & Linux ?

Use 50E since it's the same version sequence.
The UEFI mode is designed for Windows 8/8.1 so the use of Linux can be buggy.

I don't know exactly why this happens. I had to do it too. But, for Ubuntu 14.04 (and its derivative flavors and distros) it will boot in UEFI mode natively. I don't know if it detects Windows partitions though, so we'll still have to be careful. As for booting Linux and Windows on this laptop, you need to use the boot-repair utility because these laptops are apparently locked to the Windows UEFI boot manager. Boot-repair inserts a shim (essentially renames the Windows UEFI bootloader and inserts its own bootloader of the same name) into the EFI partition to allow for booting.

Had this laptop a few months back, but sadly returned it because I couldn't stand the noise at idle - tried everything. Really liked it overall.

Would love to hear more feedback on what ppl think about this new firmware and specifically about the fan noise after updating to the latest version. So, you who were annoyed by the noise before - what is your experience now?

Thanks and I also tried a USB CD/DVD and it was detected in the BIOS but didn't work at all having a livecd inside.

Are you currently using Ubuntu? I never had a problem booting Linux not even in my Retina MacBookPro which should be the one giving me issues not a PC lol.

I updated the firmware and my laptop is silent up to nearly 60C (CPU temp). Then that fan kicks on (or up to an audible speed), cools it down to ~40C and it goes silent again. Unplugged, I rarely get the fan to spool up.

Yeah, I'm dual booting Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 13.10 on my MSI GS70. It's a pain because 13.10 and earlier won't boot in UEFI mode and need Legacy mode booting and the boot-repair utility.

    Hi

I am trying to setup dualboot with my new gs70, I have been struggling for 2 days now and am getting nowhere.
I have the setup with 2 ssds in raid0 on which windows 8 is installed.

I managed to install kubuntu 13.10 when booting in legacy mode.
But i never get the boot-repair working.

After installing kubuntu from usb (legacy boot) I want to use repair-boot.
It complains about not being started from uefi and one of the pasted commands gives an error.

I think the only way i can use repair-boot if I run it from a uefi-boot in stead of legacy-boot.
But that does not work for me.
I have added 'acpi _ osi=Linux acpi _ backlight=vendor nomodeset' to the grub line for 'Start Kubuntu' but still the screen stays black.

Anyone any ideas how to get multiboot Win8/Kubuntu on my machine working?

    Thanks,
    Rob

Does anybody have problems detecting android device on GS 70? I have a Samsung Galaxy note 10.1 (2012 edition) and a Samsung Galaxy 3S. When I plug any of the devices in, the system will say Port Reset Failed and not recognize the device correctly. I tried USB debug mode and installing samsung kies with drivers. They didn't really work. I tried the devices on my other laptop which runs on windows 7 and it was able to recognize both as massive storage devices. So I know it is not my devices' issue. So far I have not found a solution yet and it is frustrating because I am developing android apps. It would be helpful if my GS70 would detect it.

Hey I'm currently looking at getting a new gaming laptop and tossing up between the GS70 and the P35K. I've reviewed most of this thread but do not see alot of people talking about the screen quality. How is everyone finding the screen quality on the MSI? I currently have a Clevo and want a matte screen but with good vibrant colours. I don't want the "washed out look". People on the P35K have reported the P35's IPS screen to be fairly good. Let me know your thoughts! Thanks.

I like that the P35K has a BD player but I don't like the screen size that much. I already notice the 1920 x 1080 seems small on a 17" so I can't imagine what it would feel like on a smaller screen. I looked up gamut on google and the only information I found was from a review saying that the MSI screen has a gamut of 83%, but I can't verify that for you. Let the smarter people handle that! ;)

I have the GS70 and I find the screen quality to be pretty good, especially from a TN panel.

My last monitor was a Dell U2711 2560*1440 IPS screen, so coming from this i expected to be dissapointed, but I am not, I think the screen on the GS70 is excellent.

You do get the typical change in contrast along the vertical axis, but it is not bad at all. Hope this helps

I should also say that I use it to watch movies all the time and for gaming, colours are great and so is brightness

Accordingly to this review Review MSI GS70-65M21621 Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews
Most builders have better options you can chose from. xoticpc for istance has 75% NTCS matte and 90% glossy, both are quite better than stock, esp. latter.

Thanks for all your replies. I'm from Australia and have not found any retailer offering screen options similar to what xoticpc offers. AFAIK only the stock screen option is available here and it is too expensive to other from overseas (when tax is added on top.. and also taking into account the extremely poor strength of the AU Dollar at the moment).

I've never owned a 17" Laptop before - I usually tend to stick with 15" laptops but thought I may make a change this time around. Don't want anything bulky that's why I've limited it to the GS70 or P35k rather than a Clevo again.

Are people still experiencing fairly loud fan noises? I recall there was a youtube video posted a couple pages back someone used the GT70 fan application to control the CPU fan speed.. wonder if anyone has similar success in doing that with this laptop?

I think I'm leaning toward the GS70 at this point..

This is the error the appears when I connect any samsung Android devices. Tried various drivers, they didn't work because for some reason this laptop can't recognize Android devices correctly to begin with.
Could it possibly be the fact that I updated the system from 8 to 8.1 through Microsoft and I didn't update any drivers from MSi? If so, what should I update?

Best to update the BIOS and EC for better compatibility.
VGA drivers are the only ones that you will most likely required to update.

Im a NZer, that had the same issues as you... too expensive to buy locally and too expensive to order from overseas..

I ended up going to Canada and buying my GS70 (was moving overseas anyway)

fan noise bugged me for a bit, but with the recent firmware updates it has turned this laptop into a silent machine (while surfing and doing light tasks) which has just made it perfect for me.

I tried the app to control the fan manually, because it was for the GT70 it didnt quite work properly and would keep spinning up and down, so oi didnt use it anymore... since the firmware update I havent been bothered anymore anyway.

It is still a 17" laptop so it is big, but the lightness makes it very portable, and you really appreciate the screen real estate. I guess it depends on whether you need to stuff it into a back pack or not... 15" would be more suitable in this regard

I updated all the VGA drivers and it doesn't seem to work. I haven't updated the BIOS because I am not too sure what to do.

I downloaded the BIO update zip file for 50E (my GS 70 does not have raid storage) and there are different bat files and I am not too sure which one to run.

It would be helpful if you give me some tips. Thanks!

Hi everyone, my name is Meghan and I have had a GS 70 since September and this is the first issue I have had: during normal use it just shut off on me and I can't get it to turn back on. It was not overheating, it has gotten hotter on many occasions without issue and was virus scanned earlier that day with no viruses found. I have let it sit and cool for about three hours now and have tried using the reset button on the right to no avail as well. Any help would be appreciated, my data is backed up on an external hard drive so no worries about that, I'll do whatever is necessary to get it up and running again, I do need it for school as I am a compsci major and would prefer to work with my own machine.

    Thanks,
    Meghan

Sounds quite bad from the first look, lets rule some things out first.

1.When the shut-down happened was it plugged in?
2.When the charger is plugged in dose the charge led illuminate?
3.What dose pressing the power button do? Dose MSI logo show?

If it shuts off without notice, what were you doing when it happened?
Was any light flashing when it shuts off during usage?

    @ Adz3000:

1.When the shut-down happened was it plugged in? Yes, it was plugged in.
2.When the charger is plugged in dose the charge led illuminate? Yep, it seemed to have no issues running when on battery, either.
3.What dose pressing the power button do? Dose MSI logo show? It does nothing at all, utterly unresponsive whether the cord is in or out.

    @Kevin:
I was playing world of warcraft and surfing reddit, nothing outside what I normally run it strain-wise.
It has only done this once and it just went dead- no lights no sound no nothing, like I had just held down the powerkey and instantly shut off except that I did nothing. I will be calling tech support and see what they have to say in a little bit and will update the post as I gain information.

Thanks for the quick replies, guys!

Edit: Tech support ordered a repair order but they weren't able to determine the nature of the problem.

The error was fixed after I flashed the BIOS. Now the computer can detect my android device correctly.
