I'm gonna be getting my replacement from new egg sometime this week. Can't wait to have it back. I'm just curious if anyone bought insurance for the laptop like square trade or something. Is it worth it?

I've never purchased insurance or service agreements. That's not to say they aren't worth it. I can't say if they are. I noticed in the documentation this laptop has a 2 yr warranty. Not sure what all it covers, but that seems pretty good.

If you paid with a credit card, call your credit card company and ask if they have a warranty extension for computer purchases.

The insurance I have is based on home contents against accident or theft, it's all down to personal taste and circumstances.

Does anyone know where to find the windows 8 product key for the laptop?
I want to create a recovery CD just in case.
The shiny windows 8 sticker at the bottom of the case doesn't have the the key on it, it's like the intel i7 sticker: small and shiny.

So where the hell is the windows 8 key

Ok, so I ended up buying a GS70 for myself and everything has been fine with it except a problem I'm now experiencing with the Bluetooth on the laptop. Basically the Bluetooth seems like it is disabled on the machine for some reason. I've gone into the MSI SCM software and try clicking on the Bluetooth option but it doesn't change to anything other than being "Off". I also try pressing the FN+F9 combination and the Bluetooth light flashes on the laptop (the 3rd light across) and I get the On Screen Display notification but the Bluetooth turns right off again.

I've completely uninstalled the Killer software (of which I believe the Bluetooth device is linked to?), downloaded the latest one from the MSI support website area, installed it but I still seem to be having the problem with it. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and knows of a way to fix it?

Many thanks to anyone who replies :)

    USB problems

Anyone else having problems with USB devices continuously disconnecting and reconnecting.
I have a new USB3 4Tb drive by Hitachi and my Ipad2 and HTC one all do the same.
But the iPhone 4S and other new USB3 2Tb, old USB2 1Tb drives are fine.

I have done google research and found the problem is with this driver "Intel (R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller -0100 (Microsoft)"
They say there is no fix available but surely there must be some way to use all my USB devices with my new laptop.

Buried into the BIOS - there are lots of free tools to dig it out; I've used Belarc Advisor for instance, it gives a comprehensive report of your computer..

Windows 8 no longer provides a printed key like previous versions of Windows did. As zipperi mentioned its embedded into the BIOS. If you reformat the computer, when you go to activate Windows it will know where to find the key for you so you dont have to manually enter it like before.

I've found the cause and fix to this problem. Basically it was caused by the installation of the "Qualcomm Atheros Communications - Bluetooth Controller - Qualcomm Atheros AR3012 Bluetooth 4.0 + HS" Windows Update. I couldn't find a KB article for this particular update. So, what I did was to completely remove all of the "Killer" and/or "Qualcomm" programs from the Programs & Features section in the Control Panel. I subsequently downloaded the latest version of the drivers located at:

    http://qca.qualcomm.com/drivers/KillerSuite_v2_1.0.36.1278_Win7_Win8_Win81.exe

Installed it and everything came good. Bluetooth is working fine again and not turning itself off constantly. There is still a bit of a problem though, if I was to now turn off Bluetooth via the MSI SCM software utility, it will not turn on again. I tested this and I had to uninstall and re-install the drivers again.

I don't know that I would call the palmrest 'short'. I have no problems with it.

I'm still getting used to the Windows key on the right side. Also adjusting to the arrow keys being tucked in close proximity to the number pad (never owned a laptop bigger than 15" & subsequently w/ number pad).

I have the same issue on my laptop, it only happens with my phone though (Sony Xperia Z1) and not my mouse or usb2 thumb drives. It will probably be fixed in a driver update eventually.

All updates have been done and all ports behave the same as before.
Although I can sometimes get the USB3 drive to stay connected, nothing I do will make my ipad 2 connect for more than 2 seconds in any port.
BTW I have cycled the power on the IPad and laptop.

Hey, i recently got this laptop and was wondering if anyone had got the surround spanning set up right? ie with the laptop as the middle and two external screens, for now i can only get it to work with the laptop as the accessory...
the problem appears to be because the laptop has the internal screen allocated to the intel hd graphics rather than nvidia, has anyone managed to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Dan

I am not sure what you mean by surround spanning, but I run 2 external monitors with the laptop as the central monitor. Sorry for the horrible picture but the light from window behind doesn't work well for pictures. 20140109_104436.jpg

Hi guys! Have any of you seen the new 2014 model of the GS70, renamed the GS STEALTH?

The model with be equipped with the GTX800 series gpus. Since it has the exact same chassis, i was wondering whether we would be able to upgrade our GPUs to the new 800 series one. If anyone having any knowledge on this could enlighten me a bit on this that would be great :D

GPU is one piece with the motherboard so no. its actually soldered on. The 800 series in this particular laptop will only be a rebrand so dont expect much of a jump in performance. The 765 is pretty much at its limit with a laptop this thin anyway

Um sort of, but what surround spanning does is when your in a game ( for example arma 3) the other two screens act as your left and right view so you get one extended display for a game
thanks for the quick reply :)

Understood...My HP Envy did that with the AMD 5850m card with 2 external and the laptop. It was part of the AMD Catalyst software. I don't game but there is an option in the nvidia software for spanning.

Yeah ive seen the option but when trying to activate this it has the laptops display mounted on the intel graphics rather than the nvidia so you cant set it up :s
i wanted to know how to either transfer the screen (as i know it can use the nvidia card) or any other options (other than 3 external screens)

Ok...Now I REALLY understand what you meant. When you try to configure spanning it wants the laptop display to be connected to the nvidia card not the intel gpu. It doesn't look like that is possible. It appears to want to have all 3 displays external for spanning on 3 displays. Sorry for my initial confusion. Maybe someone else will know another way.

Yeah im not completely sure why it says its mounted like that when it clearly uses the nvidia output for games, it also doesn't do it when i launch a game (so its using nvidia) and then open the settings :/
    thanks for the help!

on my first GS70 i remember opening a program that lets you overclock the processors or something. i don't really remember because i closed it right away and didn't think anything of it. on my replacement GS70 i don't have that software. does anyone know what I'm talking about? is it the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility?

Hi everyone. I've read the replies in regards to updating BIOS and I know that I should update that and firmware before updating to Win8.1. Now this will be my first time updating BIOS and I am a bit confused on the directions. I've heard in the past that you had to basically download some sort of file into a USB flash drives and boot the PC to use the USB's file.

However, based on the comments in this thread, you seem to be able to update by merely running an application? If I understand correctly, do I just
    1. Download the Firmware/Bios "update" from the msi gs70 page.
    2. Then run flash.bat (WITH MY COMPUTER ON NO USB FLASH DRIVE)
    3. Finished?

Then there was also talk about updating bios from the Windows in bios startup page which got me confused even more.....

Also, is a clean install needed to update to 8.1 even though my computer comes with windows 8 is completely new?

    Thank you in advance.

In the BIOS package, run FLASHWIN.BAT.
In the EC package, run AUTOFLASH.EXE.
Both updates will force the system to shut off completely once finished.
Just turn it back on and you will expect another power-off & power on due to PCH refresh for the BIOS update.
And simply disconnect AC adapter and battery once finished EC update.

Can someone PLEASE tell me where I can get a spare power supply for this laptop?

On the back it states 120W 19.5v @ 6.15A, same on the laptop. The power supply is made by Delta electronics and the model is ADP-120MH D.

I can't seem to find it anywhere, especially at the required power rating. I am UK based.

MSI uses the same type of AC adapter as Toshiba does.
But make sure the voltage and amperage rating matches to what you currently have.
Or just call MSI directly to purchase one.

I'm experiencing very slow shutdown times. Windows shuts down very fast then I get a black screen and at that point you expect the machine to power off (or restart if you are restarting) but instead it stays there for a couple of minutes and then it powers down. I tried disabling Windows 8 "Fast Startup" but it didn't make any difference.

Has anyone seen anything similar or knows how to fix this?

    Thanks!

I just bought my MSI GS70 couple days ago. I haven't used it too much as I do have a main desktop I use. However when I tried to play CS:GO last night it started slugging. It played fine for a couple minutes then the game started to lag a bit (not a connection issue) and then eventually the game would freeze with the last sound being repeated and I had to force the game down.

Anyone know what the issue is here? Someone else reported something with their battery being faulty but my battery seems to be fine.

Bought this notebook about a month ago when it was on sale at Newegg with the TV. Turned around and sold the TV for $350 so came away with it for $1200 which was pretty awesome.

Though a month of use my one problem with the laptop is the space bar is squeaky and annoying, what's the best way to fix that? I also wouldn't mind some fan control, I haven't updated the BIOS or anything since I got it, do any updates help with that? Particularly the CPU fan. It gets noticeable with the CPU just at 60 degrees which seems pretty overkill.

Was the laptop plugged in when you played cs? Make sure the laptop power setting in windows is at least set to balanced. The laptop is not able to utilise the full potential of the gtx765m when not connected to the mains.

I think if you look through this thread there is other users with the same problem but have described how to take it off and apply a fix, with regards to the fan noise there is now a new Firmware update available which I highly recommend, however i haven't come across any software that detects the fans on this laptop so up to now i believe there is no manual control.

hi guys, im new here.. been digging around this forum for awhile..
i got my notebook since last week, and i notice the boot time are longer then expected.. it flashes the msi logo for around 10 -15 sec, turn into black screen for about 5-7 sec, and then goes to the win8 login..
i had already disable the useless startup application, and it says last BIOS startup time is 4.3sec
already updated the drivers, and run the advance systemcare.. also changed the settings on msconfig but still the same..
im not using any ssd, just the 1tb hdd option and an 8gb ram..
any idea what might caused the problem?

btw, i run the startup with the gx70 and ge60 side by side with my gs70 and the difference of startup time are huge..

That sounds about right. During boot up that time is really dependent on the speed of your hard drive and 1TB are 5400RPM which unfortuneatly are the slowest drives that are made. They are nice for the larger capacity but slower as you're seeing. The only way to speed that up would be to add a SSD or mSATA when you get a chance.

Which GS70 model did you get? The 001US and 002US come with mSATA by default. There are other models which have started to come within the last 1-2 months which prices are lower but dont include those drives and in turn are slower.

What drive is in your GE60? If its a 7200RPM HDD it will be faster.

anyone else having trouble with external monitors thru the HDMI port? my G70 won't even detect the monitor (thru windows control panel, or nvidia control panel). ive tried updating/downgrading nvidia drivers, updating the BIOS to 70E and using multiple different cables. its very annoying...

Update: well, the HDMI port is fine. The problem is either my monitor or my method to attach the PC to the monitor. The monitor has DVI port and I'm using HDMI to DVI cable and apparently the laptop doesn't like it.
