haha i bought it on ebay for $20. people put up AMD promo codes for sale for pretty cheap. i think its worth it. just the premium package is what cost money. more than the game

Okay, so I have owned this laptop for about a month now, I have the edition with the 750GB 7200RPM HDD + 128GB SSD (OS)... here are my thoughts about it so far:-

    PROS:

-It has a VERY fast windows start-up process, pretty much around 4-5 seconds and you're on the windows 8 start screen (same goes for shutting down)
-A very good keyboard which is comfortable, and has a good travel space between letters. And the back lighting is as many others pointed out, coming from beneath the buttons not through it, which is distracting, and the F7 to F9 buttons are not lighted like the others (minimal lighting under them).. Oh and the windows key placement is awkward.. I know that they did it to prevent pushing it by mistake while playing, but during normal usage it takes a bit of getting used to.
-I had mixed thoughts about the screen, at first, coming from a Dell XPS L501X (720p 15.6 inch glossy screen), I thought that the colors are rather dull on the "matte" screen of this laptop... But after getting used to it, and considering how good its viewing angles are, while also being excellent in the gaming perspective, it just grew on me
-It is very cold in the idle / browsing state (temp of the cpu and such is around 3x ~ 4x C on idle/light usage)
-It came with a mouse, which has a DPI button (+/-). It is rather good but a bit heavy
-Since it's a Gaming laptop, I did of course try a few games on it.. Plays CoD Ghosts on ultra with a minor tweaking like turning the anti-aliasing and the anisotropic filtering down, and turning off the shadows. Rome total war 2 runs on high, with v-sync on at around 26 fps average, so it is playable. (ultra makes it run on about 9 fps avg or something)

    CONS:

-It is pre-loaded with a bit of bloatware like Norton Internet Security (which I instantly uninstalled), and bluestacks (which is not even working)
-High fan noise on idle coming from the left side of the laptop which is probably the GPU fan that is ALWAYS on. After trying to study on the laptop, and hearing that noise, I searched over here and found a few guys who had their heat-sink loose on their gpu/cpu; which in order made their laptops run on hot temps. So I installed a few (3) temperature monitoring softwares, and I found that everything runs cool on my system BUT 2 of them didn't read the temp of my GPU, while the third one read it at 31C but it kept disappearing.. like if the sensor isn't connected right or something like that. So I might have the same heatsink problem on my GPU
-I dislike the touchpad, It is roomy just like like the Dell's (although the dell's one is more responsive), but the lack of 2 dedicated mouse buttons completely annoys me. and the windows 8 gestures might kick in by mistake every now and then.
-The power cord's placement could have been better.
-No indicator for which USB slot uses the "super-charger" utility
-Would have preferred if the indicator for the caps lock and num lock was inside their respective keys, as well as an indicator for when the touchpad is turned on/off
-The bag that came with it is rather small for my liking (it looks big, but with limited space inside)
-The build quality feels cheap, it has a creeking sound when opening the lid sometimes, and the palm area can be pushed down with enough pressure. And I feel it won't last for long since it clicks on some points of the chassis.
-The sound quality is inferior compared to the 2.1 JBL speakers and subwoofer that is in the dell xps.. I played the same song on both and the jbl's were extremely clear and loud in comparison to the speakers in the MSI. And the subwoofer in the Dell was better as well (it's a JBL as well, so no surprise here)
-The laptop's hold in hand is not quite comfortable, as it's weight balance across its size is not making it easy at all to hold it around (if you are moving from a table to another and such, while using one hand to hold it)
-I have had my own share of problems with the killer bluetooth driver since I upgraded to Windows 8.1, after disabling the bluetooth once, I couldn't turn it back on again. Until I pressed the airplane mode button on/off by mistake, which actually fixed my problem!

I have been hearing a mechanical clicking sound periodically from a place somewhere to the left of the touchpad since I purchased the laptop, does anybody know what is that?! as well as that on/off gpu temperature readings?

About battery life, it can run for like 4 hours (haven't measured it) on average brightness while reading PDFs/browsing.

Actually, I am currently thinking of selling the MSI GS70 and saving the money for the new 15.6 inch version which is currently still in development.. because As a student who travels between home town and the city where my college is, I find that I miss the 15.6 inch laptop.. And, I sometimes work in cafes with my colleagues on projects, so I find that the 17" would be a tad bit troublesome.

Thanks for reading it through (if you did :p)

i agree with you on most of this. and in the same boat. but i am in the return period and im going to return it and wait a couple of months (fingers crossed) for the MSI GS Stealth :) i think this is a great laptop but i cant stand that i just got it and a new one will be out soon. i know that thats how technology goes. but i feel like its close enough to be picky

fan noise - Install the latest firmware for the laptop and the GPU fan remains off unless its under load/in use, the CPU fan also dose the same making the laptop silent apart from the hdd.

Super charger - I think its the left hand side, there is a small label mark there.

Clicking sound - The clicking will most likely be your hard drive (which is located to the left of the touch pad) seeking for data or parking off the disk, nothing to worry about. As for the sporadic temperature readings i am not to sure.

updated both the BIOS and Firmware, still the left fan's noise is audible and when i put my hand near the vents, I can feel air going out on the left side, but not on the right side one. And I made sure that it's using the Intel HD graphics not the nvidia graphics card

about the super charger, I found that by now so thanks :)

No tearing on the screen during gameplay with Vsync off?

EC 508 should make the fan noise quieter than before. Is this what you updated to?

I found the culprit, it was the Bluetooth driver. Installed the latest one and everything is back to normal.

Yes that.. I downloaded both the BIOS and the Firmware from their official website MSI Global GS70 STEALTH

It is probably related to the sporadic GPU temperature readings that I have

what SSD is used in the laptop. i might want to buy another one and RAID 0 it with the one in there. and is anyone elses `/~,TAB,Cap Lock, and ShiftKey less illuminated then the other keys. mine hardly glow from the bottom. i know there are some keys (Function 7-9,11 that dont have LEDs but i thought the `/~,TAB,Cap Lock, and ShiftKey had them. unless i am mistaken.

    Hi,

Is it normal that the right fan is very hotter than the left one ?

    Thank you.

Yes it can be depending on what you're doing. One side is for the CPU the other the GPU. If you were gaming the side with the GPU would run hotter because that is being stressed more then the CPU.

Anyone else have a problem with their microphone? I was playing l4d2 and someone commented on it. Turned on Audacity and it is horrible - so much noise (buzzing sound), I can barely hear myself speak. Turned microphone boost all the way down and still nothing. Oddly enough there is also a very slight buzz in headphones almost as if their was a grounding issue somewhere, but my old laptop also had this.

Edit: MSI RMAed the laptop, replaced the microphone and it is very clear sounding now.

You can disable bits and pieces and then see if your shutdown time is impacted.

i wanna give an update on my battlefield 4 settings, frames, and temperature. in 1920x1080. all high settings set from battlefield. vsync off with very little tearing, hardly noticable. and im getting pretty solid frames at mid 40s to 50. its very playable and looks good. if i set the resolution to 1600x 900 i can get high 50s/mid 60s. temperature without a cooling pad is GPU=80 degrees and the CPU=75 degrees. i put my cooling pad on and played for 45 min and the GPU temp dropped and never pass 75. the CPU temp never passed 64.

i think thats pretty solid

Has anyone else experienced CPU throttling? At stock voltage, I was throttling at 90C when running Handbrake. It seemed a little weird to me since Intel lists the 4700HQ up to 100C.

I undervolted (-100mV) and Handbrake pushes the CPU to 81C and I don't see any throttling.

At stock voltage, I was getting a score of 709 in Intel XTU benchmark. At -100mV I get 710. At -110mV I get 708. I think there's room to undervolt a bit more, but I'm pretty happy with where it's at.

    Trial and error.
First I started with the Geforce drivers, then the Intel vga ones and finally with the network ones (bluetooth included there). Shutdown time changed from several minutes to nearly instant.

I just bought a new GS70 and and looking for a custom (NOT universal) keyboard cover (to keep dust/crap out of the gaps and prevent wear on the keys). I'd prefer the TPU material, but would be OK with a silicon cover. Problem is that I've looked online and can't seem to find anything. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My computer crashes while playing FPS like BF4. The sound of crouching/bullets/wahteverim doing keeps looping and my screen freezes. Then my laptop restarts with no BSOD or error.

    Anyone know why?

Hi Guys. An alienware owner here (please don't hit my face!)

I've been looking into the GS70 after getting a portege Z930 at work. the ultrabook thing got me thinking about why I have to lug around a 14" machine with a GT 555m in it that's nearly 2 inches thick!

I'm toying with the GS70. I've heard SCAN.CO.UK are getting stock to sell for £1099 this weekend. that's with 8gb ram and a single 128gb SSD. Very tempting! but then the GS stealth is due this year with, I would imagine, 8 series graphics. As well as upgraded speakers and keyboard. But then there's also that great looking 15.6" concept. Just need to hear what GPU it will have!

Arrgh! Its always so complicated picking a new machine! Anyway, I thought I'd let you know about scan's offer so at least someone can get one! (the price is currently showing as £1099 ex VAT. the rep assures me this is a mistake and should be £1099 after VAT).

Did updating the firmware wipe the system? There is a warning on the MSI page indicating that will happen.

I just thought i would share a couple of fixes that i was having trouble with on my msi gs70. My first problem was connecting different mini displayport to vga adaptors and getting them working. I think i bought all of the ones you can buy in the stores and none worked . I purchased a cheep one from china for 5 bucks and it worked perfect i'm not sure why. Today at work i realized i forgot to take my adapter that worked and was stuck with a dynex mini displayport to vga adaptor that i had been testing at work that still did not work. being that i needed all my monitors going i did some more test and found that if i put the computer in sleep mode it resets then as it powers back up and the dynex mini displayport to vga adapter works as should and my vga monitors light up. If i restart my laptop it go's back to not working unless i put it in sleep mode first. So i guess that is a temporary fix tell some one works out that bug in the driver.

Moral of the story if your mDP does not work put laptop in sleep mode and power back up with mDP plugged in.

My second problem was my keyboard lights not working and always being red. The fix for mine was removing the back cover and replugging in the cable. check with your country for warranty issues. msi told me it was ok to open here in the US.

    I'm using windows 8.1

Just got my laptop three days ago, and I must say I'm impressed with the performance. There were two small problems though.

For two days I just couldn't figure out why it kept going to sleep after 15 minutes of not touching it. I was 100% sure I turned everything to "Never Sleep". Then I went to advanced battery settings and found out it was set to "Hibernate" after 15 minutes...kind of weird they did that.

The other problem was more from XoticPC, being a guy who's not a super expert on computers I asked them to install my windows 8 with RAID 0 since I got two mSATA. After confirming it x2 they still installed it in AHCI. I've contacted them x3 after that, and they said they would have someone contact me to remotely help me with this, but still haven't for 3 days. It's a huge disappointment on their service this time, including them forgetting my game and messing up my order for 9 days late on processing (still had to pay extra for rush, but took longer than normal production) =(. The only solution I see from google is to just do a clean install of windows 7 (I don't want windows 8 anyways). I hope I don't do something wrong D=

Congratulations on your purchase and sorry to hear about the little issues you are having.
Unfortunately, you can't switch from AHCI to RAID without performing a clean install as the RAID needs to have an array created first then the OS last (RAID driver needed too).

Has anyone with RAID0 bothered with updating the SSD firmware? I understand it is not a trivial task. The Sandisk firmware updater does not recognize the drives while RAIDed. Is there a toolbox for the Sandisk SSDs while in RAID0 to keep them running at top notch?

I have an HP Envy15 with a Samsung SSD (on a RAID controller in RAID Mode - not AHCI) and it gets "performance optimized" (thru Samsung Magician) every month.

Just want my new baby performing to its potential.

I just happened to think of a possible issue: Putting one of these on the laptop won't adversely affect the ventilation, will it? I happened to think that it's possible that the laptop could (also) be drawing in air from around the keys of the keyboard.

Does anyone know if air is drawn in at all from around the keys (enough that I shouldn't cover the keyboard with a protector)?

No meaningful amount of air is drawn through the keyboard on the GS70. The main air movement from CPU and GPU are through the two side grills. The top speaker grill and bottom two smaller grills on the bottom take care of the rest...plus the aluminum-ish chassis helps dissipate the heat. If you choose to add a keyboard skin, you shouldn't notice any adverse affects...but then again, your mileage may vary.

Thanks for replying Hutsady, today they sent me the code to the game after emailing them. I am just still waiting for someone to help guide me through re-installing my OS to switch to RAID.

Thanks Kevin. I understand I need to do a clean install in order to switch to RAID, but I don't have the installation disk as the OS was pre-installed. I could work around it by downloading the official OS ISO and install it from my flash drive, but I would still need the activation code of the OS where I'm not sure where to get. (Not paying extra for a brand new Win8, for sure!) Please let me know if I'm missing a step.

You should make a bootable flash using MSIs burn recovery program that's pre-installed. And then you'll be able to reinstall. And the windows key is built into the Bios so you don't need it.

No problem glad to hear you got the game codes.

You had Windows 8 presintalled on there right? A printed key isnt included anymore, its embedded in the BIOS. When you do a clean install it will know where to find the key code.

Has anyone had issue with the brightness of the MSI GS-70 Stealth US001 LED backlit Keyboard?? It seems that it isnt very bright at all.. I dont know if its done on purpose or not. There is the saturation which helps a little bit but not very noticable other than that I have no way of tweaking the brightness.. anyone??

PS sorry if posted int eh wrong area.:hi2:

I to have seen this, Poked around a few forums and searched around the interwebs to no avail.

Does anyone else seem to have this dim keyboard? Is there a brightness adjustment in the BIOS or a STEELSERIES program to adjust the brightness..none that I have seen.
MSI or STEELSERIES should create a program to adjust the KEYBOARD brightness...this is a 1500+$ machine...
