How does one go about flashing the firmware and the BIOS? I know MSI packages utilities, but I don't know which I'm supposed to use.

    Hey guys,

I just received my MSI GS70 yesterday and have been going through initial setup etc. While it is running I have noticed a quiet beeping/whistling noise that reminds me of morse code which seems to be coming from under the power button area. It is distinct from the fan and lasts a couple seconds here and there. Is anyone else experiencing this or know what it is/if it's normal?

    Thanks

hey everyone. i been lurking on this thread for a while now and pulled the trigger and got myself a gs70. i love it. i have one problem tho. im all updated and current, bios, drivers, the works. even 8.1. my problem is that im not getting a wireless networks showing up to connect to i know its there cause im on it with other devices. im plugged into the ethernet and i have internet. the laptop just not finding wireless. any help would be appreciated. thanks guys

little more info... in device manager the killer wireless-n adapter is working correctly. i downloaded the drivers from MSI and the the killer website. tried both and both do the same thing.

edit..well after being really annoyed and frustrated i decided to check services.msc..and low and behold WLAN Autoconfig was disabled for some reason, dont know why...but set it to automatic, started it and it worked

I second this! The cpu fan really bugged me until this firmware fix. It looks like it was released 12-17-2013. MSI Global GS70 STEALTH

You'll have to contact support, but I did the same (contacted support) and they said it wouldn't void it. It'd be better to get a response from support so you can vouch in case they claim it does void the warranty.

Also highly recommend this, during light use all I can hear is the HDD! Big improvement!

Recommend this gets mentioned on the first page of the thread!

Not experienced this on my unit but to me it sounds like a capacitor squealing or something, usually nothing to worry about. However you may want to investigate it further as you may have grounds to return it if it is indeed one of the capacitors.

Dose it get louder when the laptop is under load? (Gaming, stress testing ect?)

To update the firmware, first download then extract and run the "winflash" application as administrator.

I have yet to update the BIOS on my unit yet but I believe there is a option of some kind in the BIOS itself, press DELETE on start-up to access the BIOS.

There is a batch file (BAT) in every package, so double click on FLASHWIN in BIOS package, and Autoflash or Winflash in EC package to update.

It's probably the HDD head that makes noise. Open the laptop up and disconnect the HDD, and verify if it's the HDD or fan.

Great, you've resolved it, I thought it was Airplane mode got activated by accident but guess not.

Yes, you can break the sticker and perform upgrades/changes internally, as long as nothing is damaged in the process (warrant is void if it is).
    This applies to US/Canada only.

Yes, you can do it in BIOS using the IN-BIOS updater for BIOS only, or you can do it in Windows using the BAT file for both BIOS and EC.

This is what I have been waiting for!! Seems like I did get the christmas present I wanted, thanks MSI - you just made this the perfect laptop...

Is the only other noise that you can hear coming from the front bottom left? (facing the laptop) sound like it could be the HDD..

About to place my order for a GS70, just wondering about putting Windows 7 on. Are all up to date drivers for W7 available? Is there anything special I need to do in order to keep the SSDs RAID0 after formatting?

All Win8.1, Win8, and Win7 drivers are available, see below downloads.
BIOS, EC, and Drivers (Select OS type).
    GS70 Downloads

For Win7, you will need to press & hold DEL to enter BIOS, and then change UEFI mode to LEGACY mode, or CSM if you wish to use GPT.
For RAID setup, you will need to copy the RAID driver onto USB flash drive, loadable through USB 2.0 port.

Thanks for the response. I ran 3d mark 11 and 3d mark vantage in my initial stress testing as well as a couple games. The noise became more apparent and frequent when this happened. I believe it is something like you said with a capacitor perhaps on the mobo, or a bad case of coil whine from the gpu. It is very noticeable and distracting though.

Thanks for the quick reply! I've never setup drives in a RAID before, just want to make sure I'm getting this correct. Do I need to do anything in BIOS to enable a RAID array prior to installing W7? Or do I just format the drives, install W7 then run the Intel driver utility after?

Hey all I'm thinking of getting a GS70 in the next couple days, either that or something else. I have one question though,

I love dual fan laptops, which is why I am looking at this one right now but I just noticed the fans exhaust is out of the sides and not the rear?

How hot is the exhaust on the GPU side(left) ? Not how hot the gpu is but how hot is the exhaust. When I do play games my girlfriend likes to watch and sits on the left of me usually. I had a GE60 and it would be insanely hot on that side of the laptop even as much as 3 feet away. Is this one's exhaust that bad also?

    Thanks everyone in advance!

In BIOS, switch to LEGACY first, then change AHCI to RAID.
When prompted, press CTRL + I to boot to Intel Rapid Storage Tech utility to create a disk array, such as RAID 0 or RAID 1.
Once created, then you can go about getting the OS installed + RAID driver on the USB flash drive @ USB 2.0 port.

The temperature will be acceptable if you are not playing any games, just surfing, chatting.
But if you start playing games/watching video then the heat rises, and sure the fan will spin faster to reduce that heat, so the temperature will be warmer however still reasonable/acceptable.
It's not going to feel like that you are about to burn your fingers.

came across one maybe two more issues/questions. i have the laptop plugged in. its at 99% but my battery light is flashing orange. when i first got the laptop a couple days ago i noticed it and unplugged the power and the laptop shut off. is something wrong? i haven't opened up Hybrid Power...not since i rebooted a few times. any info on that would be great.

another problem could be GS70 related, it could not. i play Counterstrike: Global Offensive. and every so often my game will freeze and stutter. Counter Strike 1.6 Persistent Lag Issue (Solved) - YouTube its like this. but it doesn't happen as much as that. the game will freeze and stutter and the sound will repeat the last sound a few times...if any of that makes sense. its not an internet issue cause im connected in voice clients and those work while the stutter happens. im going to try more games tomorrow to see what happens and maybe record some in fraps. it also could be just valve related and nothing to do with the laptop, but you never know. if anyone has this kind of issue or knows anything about it i would appreciate it

    thanks !

The battery is bad, thus why blinking the orange LED.
Contact MSI directly to get warranty service.

From this point then it might be worth getting in touch with MSI to see what they advise, like I mentioned before you could have grounds for a replacement.

I just unplugged it to see something and the laptop shut off . which I knew would happen. But on start up the blinking light went away. And its functioning normal now. So the blinking orange happened twice now. Do you still thinks a bad battery. It doesn't always blink orange .

Personally I would test it a little bit more and maybe try battery calibration using the pre installed utility. This has only happened to me once and that was after the firmware upgrade, When it went amber I shut down unplugged and it was fine when it start again.

The first time it happened was when I first got the laptop. Probably the first time I turned it on it was blinking. I unplugged it and it shut down not thinking anything could be wrong. Since then I updated everything . bios and firmware and all and it still did it. I contacted new egg and got an RMA for a replacement. Will probably take like 15 days to get the new one. Granted they can replicate the problem and see what its doing. :-\

Yeah.when I noticed it was blinking I looked around setting g and everything. The battery was at 99%. And the status was plugged in, not charging. It doesn't blink every time. When I unplug it and shuts down. Upon start up it stops and goes normal. Until it happens again. I just don't know what triggers it

    Hey guys

    I just received my GS70 ! And I already love it :) !
How should i proceed with my battery ? Do i need to run out of battery before to plug it ?

And someone can tell me how to update my bios ? I heard there is a firmware which fix the fans issues . :) !
So I bought a 1TB sata in order to put it in ? Do I only need to put it in in order to make it work ?

EDIT : I did update the BIOS and the firmware with the help from PDF from MSI.
How to be sure that I did correctly the updates ?

Is that normal that the boot of the pc is only 3sec but the turn off is like 15/20 sec ?
    Thank you :)

Jack, what version of BIOS did you have before?
You should not cross-flash to a different version.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, previously it was factory standard Windows 8. I then proceeded to Windows 8.1. Does that mean it would have been Windows 8 BIOS already installed? If so then i possibly might of cross-flashed. :(

I don't know which BIOS i previously had but i used this one for updating E1771IMS109.zip which is for Non-Raid due to the fact I only have a 128gb SSD and 1TB 7600rpm which isn't Raid.

    Jack.

Windows 8 BIOS worked for Windows 7, the only difference is the boot mode, for Windows 8 or 8.1 you use UEFI, for Windows 7 use UEFI + CSM or Legacy.

So it depends on how you install Windows 7, if your Windows 7 was installed with CSM (boot from UEFI DVD and run Windows setup) then you can change BIOS from Legacy to EUFI + CSM, it boots without Bigfoot boot agent.

Hi! I have a MSI GS70 barebone (same hardware) and would like to update the EC firmware for the updated fan table. I tried running the Winflash application but got an error message saying "wrong project". The computer was delivered without a OS (I am running windows 8.1), the BIOS version is "E1771IG6.509" and the EC version is "1771EG61 Ver5.05". How should i proceed to get the new EC firmware?

For BIOS, try running FLASHWIN.BAT, as for EC, try running Autoflash.

Ran the "FLASHWIN64.BAT" file, a command prompt window appeared for a split second and nothing more happened. Restarted and checked BIOS, nothing changed, still the same version. Same story with the "Autoflash", quick command prompt - nothing changed.

I have the exact same problem with it disappearing almost instantly, and my bios is dated 01/10/2013. You can't run .bat files in compatability mode, and surely it should work anyway cause it's meant for W8.1? I ran it as admin but it didn't make a difference

Any help on this matter would be much appreciated

Merry Christmas! I just wanted to share a small Christmas present with you guys. The results of my Uni Heaven Benchmark with and without overclocking. As you can see I achieved a 23% gain that is stable The temps without OC are 72 C the temps with OC are 75 C.

Left is without OC obviously...My core clock is upped at 1035mhz and my memory clock is at 3000mhz with OC

For GS70, there's a EC reset switch on the right side toward the front.
Simply insert a tiny pin/needle to perform EC reset then the new version of EC will take effects.
