Congrats on your order! If you got the 001US model it will have one mSATA slot available. The 002US will not have any open slots. The ease of adding that to the 001US will depend on your level of comfort of doing something like that. One person may think its very easy while another would never dream of doing it.

I'm looking for the version with raid 0 with the empty slot for an extra HDD :) ! Is that more easier or harder to install it than a mSATA?

    PS : this HDD <Toshiba MQ01ABD100H 2.5 ">
    http://www.amazon.fr/Toshiba-MQ01ABD100H-1000-serial_ata600-5400/dp/B00F9JY5LM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1386709979&sr=8-1&keywords=MQ01ABD100H#productDetails

Do you think that I can add this HDD ? Or it is too big in order to put in ?

    Thanks :)

I'm not familiar with a version where there is an open HDD bay, but there have been alot of variations come out within the last couple months so I'm sure someone is selling one like that.

The installation of a mSATA and HDD would be pretty much the same in regards of what you need to do if there is an open bay for it.

That HDD looks like it will fit no problem.

Honestly if you are unsure about installing the hard drive, just order the 002 model with raid 0 and 1gb hard drive. The drive you are putting in is only a 1tb 5400rpm drive which is what comes with the 002 model. If I were going through the hassle of opening this laptop, I would at least put in a 7200 rpm drive. Personally I have considered putting in a ssd to replace my 1tb 5400rpm drive both for speed and battery savings.

Do I only need to add the HDD in order to make it work ?

    Thanks :)

Same here, the front leds are so bright lol !

Would be good to know this but I suspect the only thing we can upgrade on this without voiding the warranty is HD/SSD & Ram

Been having a similar issue, after my laptop goes idle for a while (i can have the keyb lights off or on wave colors) and when i come back to it it just shows red as well.

I was thinking of putting windows 7 as well as I really dont like 8 but the 8.1 upgrae makes the os more enjoyable
plus all benchmarks are showing 8.1 putting better game playing than win7

It sounds like you're really not familiar with how to do it, and plan on buying a hard drive to put in there after you get the computer. I would suggest ordering a model with one already installed.

Today i did a test to see if i could get my displays working with the mDP and win 8.1 using a mDP to VGA adapter. looks like only one version
    works correctly.

mini displayport to VGA adapter and NVIDIA Drivers

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M Version: 9.18.13.1170 [5/24/2013] Works with windows 8 and a mini displayport to VGA adapter

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M Version: 9.18.13.3193 [11/23/2013] Does not work with windows 8 and a mini displayport to VGA adapter

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M Version: 9.18.13.1170 [5/24/2013] Works with windows 8.1 untell reboot then crash
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M Version: 9.18.13.1183 [6/13/2013] Does not work with windows 8.1 and a mini displayport to VGA adapter

Sorry to hear. I am using 331.65 (11/07/13) on Windows 8 with a Monoprice mDP to HDMI passive adapter along with a 2nd monitor attached direct via HDMI. No issues here. Might want to see if that version works for you, or consider trying a different adapter.

I'm finally running with 3 SSDs and am loving it. :)

    Toshiba THNSNF128GMCS 128GB (default) - OS, Apps
    Toshiba.png

    Plextor PX-256M5M 256GB (mSATA add-on) - VMs
    Plextor.png

    Samsung 840 EVO 500GB (replaced the default 750GB 7200RPM) - Steam
Note: I haven't installed the driver/software to enable TurboWrite or Rapid Mode yet
    Samsung.png

Needless to say, I am very happy. This is the ultimate work + gaming machine with portability.

I also drive 2 x 26" monitors @ 1920x1200 + internal LCD. This was a major selling point for me, so I'm glad that it works. BTW, I use DisplayFusion to create different monitor profiles (2 ext+int, 1 ext, 1 int) and switch between them via tray icon - it's great.

hey guys, I'm planning to switch from asus n56vz to this super slim MS70. my question is how weight it is ? is comfortable on the go everyday with this stuff ?
It's very painful to carry asus n56vz on my back everyday..
I've already seen razer blade pro to, but maybe I'll chose this GS70..

The GS70 models are 5.73lbs. The larger size shouldnt bother you to much unless your in confined places often like on a plane.

The laptop is overall pretty light at no more than 6 lbs, but you do need a bigger bag because of the 17" screen, however you will be pleased with both of its portability and performance and expandability.
Not many ultrabook NBs can meet both criteria at the same time.

    Hey guys,
I'd like to thank you for this thread, it helped me on my decision to buy the MSI GS70.

I've got mine now, and started looking at the temps.
    It idles at ~45C.
Well, I went ahead and tested it's CPU under load with Intel XTU. Unfortunately I got it to reach 90C in the very beginning of the test, the right fan got crazy loud, and the CPU throttled to lower clocks because of the heat.

I have experience with opening laptops to clean/repaste, so I'm actually considering opening mine to see if something can be done in the heat department. I bought the computer in the USA but don't live there, so my warranty is pretty much useless since MSI here in Brazil probably won't accept products bought outside for any service.

I'd like to ask fellow owners about your temperatures when running stress tests (like Prime95, OCCT, Intel XTU) which I know aren't "real life situations", but they serve as a good point of comparison between models.
If mine really is over average, I'll open it to see what's going on. If I do open it, I'll also analyze the fan and air intake's inner workings, to see if they can be improved in any way. MSI's pictures show the holes in the upper part as being the main air intakes, but there's also the vents under the notebook that seem to be "traditional" air intakes as well. Maybe drilling the bottom of the case would result in better overall airflow? I haven't found any mods for this model yet, so somebody has to be the first crazy one to attempt it :)

Also, while on the subject of heat, I'd like to recommend CPU undervolting to anyone who owns this model (or any model, really). For less informed readers, It consists of lowering the voltage used by the CPU, while keeping it's frequency values on default. So, you get less heat production, and ZERO performance loss.
Intel Extreme Tuning Utility software has the option to do that, "Dynamic CPU voltage offset".

In my MSI GS70 I was able to reduce it -100mV, resulting in total TDP decreasing under load from ~50W to ~40W, and the throttling stopped.
The temperatures are still high after the undervolt @ ~87C, so I'm still up for the repasting. Any help will be appreciated!

yap, I'll need more than reguler bag to carry this stuff around everyday..

will MSI create a similar laptop like this with smaller screen ???? (ex 14 inch) to match razer blade 14.

Gotcha thanks! My question is weather or not I should do the BIOS update and if using Legacy mode, should download the windows 7 one.. I know the bios updates fix a lot of the windows 8 stuffs but was wondering if the machine is rock solid under 7?

New GS70 owner here, everything is working well except the annoying CPU fan at idle.

I read the entire 60+ pages a few weeks back before purchasing the laptop, and just searched the thread again, but does anyone know of a fix for the CPU fan noise at idle?

I have one of the variants that did not ship with two ssd's. If I add an ssd to the system is it possible to add it in raid configuration for better speed? If so, would I need to match the existing?

Yes you can add a second mSATA drive then set up RAID 0, you will need to reinstall Windows when doing so. You will want to match it the best you can since RAID will only go as fast as your slowest drive.

I have been fighting drivers on my gs70. I am looking for the driver for the keyboard lights. Not the KLM program. I have one device in my device manager that is unknown. As a previous post my keyboard lights are only red and i'm sure i must have just lost the driver in my OS swaps. Thanks

The device is called "Unknown device" the hardware id is USB\VID_0000&PID_0002\6&36212031&0&8. When i disable Intel(R) 8 Series/C220 Series USB EHCI #1 - 8C26 , the unknown device goes away. So i'm assuming the usb driver is not reading the device right.

    About the FAN noise

I don't think there is a fix yet.

I did try installing the fan controller for the GT70... it did reduce the fan noise completely... for a few seconds

BUT then it would spin up and down continually, making this weird whistling noise everytime it did it...

If someone could adapt that to the GS70 so it worked properly that would be awesome

I like having fan noise. It tells me my CPU's and GPU's are being cooled. If not they would over heat. Maybe some one should design and make the bottom of the laptop a water cooled heat sink with no fans.

I just bought the 16g, 2xSSD raid 0 version on craigslist for $1250, pristine condition! Extremely happy with the purchase so far.

My initial bench-marking did return some AWFUL SSD write speed results. My Read speeds were good, but my write speeds were about 1/5 what they should be. I updated the bios, used the live updater, etc. What fixed the performance issues finally was manually downloading and installing the intel raid drivers.

Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) RAID Driver
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/De...apid+Storage+Technology+(Intel®+RST)&lang=eng

Anyway here are my current speeds now:
    - CrystalDiskMark Results
    - Parkdale Results

The read speeds went up around 33% and the read speeds like 300%... Anyway, maybe/hopefully someone else will find this usefull and see similar results. Please let me know what you guys find out!

Here are links to the tools I used to test:
    - CrystalDiskMark
    - Parkdale

The keyboard light isn't associated with any device in the device manager.
Upon searching of PID_0002, it came out with weird results.

    Hi,

I own a GS70 which has 2 solid state disks and 1 hard drive, I have windows 8.1 on the SSD, all official.

I was using my laptop at school today, and once i got it home to turn it out, its not able to detect my SSD's and hence it isnt booting into windows.

Can someone help ? ive tried looking, it keeps going to the BIOS screen, and in the bios screen it doesnt show my SATA SSD's, and it had been working perfectly like 3-4 hours ago. Now it goes into a screen where it says Reboot and Select proper Boot device. Please help

Edit : Fixed, but had to use the refresh windows facility and lost a lot of my personal settings along with 8.1, but whatever atleast it works

Can you try holding the DEL key to enter BIOS, and verify if the SSD drives are detected by the BIOS?

the Win 8.1 update keep popping out when i turn on the laptop which made me want to update.

what are the necessary things i should do before/while doing/after an update? i'm wanting to do it but it involves things like the BIOS (which i have no idea what it is) and other seemingly complicated things then i guess i'll steer away from it.

You will need BIOS and EC update to support Win8.1 properly.
Drivers and utilities will also need to be updated to Win8.1 compatible.
If you are not prepared to go through such hassle yet then you can wait for some other time once you are ready, but don't rush to the upgrade.

Yep, no massive changes unless you need something specific.

Hey guys, I have a problem:

I own the non raid version of the gs70 and I bought an extra msata drive to make it raid 0. I'm trying to update the bios using the raid 0 version. However, when it is updating it fails and says:

    ROM Image update denied
EFI_SECURITY_VIOLATION! ROM Image Version is invalid

Can I please get some help because I really want to make it raid 0

Unless you have a good reason for wanting to update the BIOS, stop what you're doing right now. You don't need to flash the RAID 0 BIOS to create a RAID array. Instead, you need to go into the BIOS and set it up there. The RAID 0 BIOS files that MSI offers only set it by default for systems with RAID already. Otherwise, you can simply set up the array yourself.

Thanks that makes it easier! Can you please explain how I can get to creating the raid 0 array? I dont see the option in the bios...is it like ctrl+i or something? All I see is select AHCI/Raid...but after I select raid, it just boots up to a black screen. I'd like to get to the part where I can set stripe size etc.

Update: I figured it out. Gotta go to windows 8 repair then select advanced and reboot to bios...there you will see intel rapid storage tech button. Create raid 0 from there :)

Hi guys, not sure if this been asked before but I bought my GS70 on cyber monday and been enjoying it. I haven't used Windows 8 to be honest and I was just using Windows 7 for a few games that I play (not a heavy gamer by any means) so I have no clue what i need or dont need in my startup menu

    Alcohol Virtual Drive
    BlueStacks Agent
    Creative UpdReg
    Delayed launcher
    ETD Control Center
    hkcmd Module
    igfxTray module
    KillerNetmanager
    MSI Keyboard Led Manager
    Nvidia Capture Server Proxy
    NVIDIA GeForce Experience
    persistence Module
    Radio Manager
    Realktek HD Audio Manager
    SCM
    Sound Blaster Cinema
    Super-Charger
    Windows host process

Never seen these in WIndows7 other than the intel stuff
    Thanks in advance

    hi lycannyc,

I just recieved my GS stealth this afternoon (128gb ssd/750gb hdd on the side model), I am very pleased with the quality of this laptop.. I am also going thru like you are and seeing what could be cleared out,

I left the Nvidia and Intel stuff there, didnt want to fuss with it, got rid of Blue Stacks, the games, Norton stuff, and a couple of other things, wasn't sure about the Sound Blaster Cinema so I left that there for now. I was in the upper 60s GB free on the SSD when I first started it up and ended up getting it back up to about 75, then it dipped alittle after installing the latest java and adobe flashwave, but it is still in the mid 70s

maybe I can increase that number more, so ya I am wondering the same things you are

    any more info greatly appreciated

I recommend flashing the new EC firmware posted on the MSI website. It really makes the fans at idle super quiet!
