Yes its fine and recommended to have it plugged in when you can. That will help with performance since the computer can get more power to it then just running on battery alone, and it will extend the battery life span since you're not constantly running it up and down.

What photo editing software are you using? Make sure your color profile in the software matches the same as your desktop color profile. For example make sure both are assigned sRGB IEC61966-2.1

    Hey all!

So my life long mac using GF just got one of these! I have the 780m GT version but she wanted something that was thin, light but still supported adobe mercury (nvidia Only) so we decided on this. Have some questions if ya dont mind :)_

1 - Does it give an option to burn recovery disks in case the hard drive dies?
2 - Can windows 7 be installed? (On my GT I switched it to Legacy mode and installed 7 and all drivers work great)
3 - Does the power button change color based on what GPU is being used?
4 - She uses a laptop on her lap ALL the time. This sucks the cool air in from the top so covering up the bottom is a non issue right? When using something that will use the GPU she will have it on a flat table, but is heat an issue for basic internet browsing and the like with the bottom covered?
5 - How well is the adaptation to windows 8? I will install start7 for her but was wondering if anyone is have any major HUGE issues with windows 8?
6 - How much crap does MSI install on it that can be removed?
7 - Windows 8.1 update? Safe? I heard you might need a BIOS update beforehand. Can anyone provide a link to said BIOS?

    Thanks all!!

Even when i start Adobe Fireworks the loading up graphic is not yellow like it used to be it's a greenish weird color ... and also while browsing folders via windows explorer the folder colors are not yellow are greenish ... most of the colors seem ok ... it's just yellow and green colors are very weird.

Hey all, just placed the order last night for the GS70 last night and was wondering the same thing as apachehavok.

Will updating to 8.1 cause the drivers for everything to be messed up still? I read a couple pages back that Bluetooth gets messed up, but is that it?

I'm only concerned, because my sister updated her Samsung with the 8870m to 8.1 and completely lost her GPU, so I definitely don't want to update if MSI isn't fully supporting 8.1 yet!

No way to know exactly until you try it. If you do run into issue MSI does have 8.1 drivers posted MSI Global GS70 STEALTH.

    1. You can use the MSIBurnRecovery program.
    2. Yes, read previous page 53.
    3. Yes, it switches back and forth depending on if it requires extra kick with the nVidia GTX765m or just breezy Intel 4600
    4. It should be fine.
    5. No major issues with Windows 8, just nobody fancies it :)
    6. It does have a handful of useless programs pre-installed via factory, e.g. Bluestacks, Norton. It can be removed.
    7. I installed it with no hassle when i did have Windows 8. MSI Global GS70 STEALTH

I was wondering what exactly the "super raid 0" on this laptop is.

    1. Does it support trim?
    2. Also, can I install 3 ssds in raid 0 (2 msata 1 2.5" SSD)?

Super RAID = MSI version of RAID 0 using 2x mSATA SSD.
It supports TRIM due to IRST driver support.
Yes, you can do RAID 0 with 2x mSATA + 1x 2.5" SATA since all SATA channels are managed by the same Intel controller.

Any battery saving tips? Config to get better battery life?

I've had my GS70 for a few months and I only get a few hours (2 if I'm lucky) on battery with just web surfing.

I've done no firmware / BIOS updates since I got the laptop. Would that help? Any other options? I have it plugged in 95% of the time as it's a desktop replacement but I'd like to be able to get a bit of work done at a cafe without plugging in.

That seems rather low based on my experience. My bet would be that you have a running program that switches your active graphics card to the dedicated GTX card, and that ends up eating the battery faster than expected. The power button glows white when using the integrated intel card, and orange when it's on nviidia card. Have a look into that to see if it's the case.

Also, high brightness settings on the screen can drastically reduce the duration, as well as windows' power options being on "high performance" mode (which locks the processor at 100% clocks without load, per example). You should also check your settings in these cases. Hope that helps :)

Ok a new issue just appeared, the power button in the middle is glowing amber and white, basically it switches back and forth every 0.5 second, then it delays for 1 second, and then keeps repeating. I'm idling on the desktop with a fresh reboot. The following programs running in the show hidden task bar section is.

    TuneUp Utilities.
    Bluetooth Devices.
    nVidia GEFORCE Experience.
    Realtek HD Audio Manager.
    ELAN Pointing Device.
    Intel Rapid Storage Technology.
    Qualcomm Atheros Killer Network Manager.
    MSI Keyboard LED Manager.
    Sound Blaster Cinema.
    SCM.
    MSI Live Update 5.
    Killer Network Manager.
    PowerISO Virtual Drive Manager.
    PCMeter.
    Intel HD Graphics.
    Steam.

What could possibly cause it to switch back and forth?

Steam. Kill steam. Then set it to use the Intel and NOT the nvidia. No reason steam needs to use the nvidia gpu; when you launch a game the gpu will kick in.

Just tried that, i rebooted to let it set, now that i'm back on the home screen. I noticed for some reason my gadgets on the side didn't launch and also the power button wasn't switching back and forth. It was on white as normal. I then turned on gadgets and what do you know.. It started to switch back and forth. It must be something to do with scanning constantly for temperatures etc.

Must be the GPU and CPU widgets i think..

So we have decided to go the windows 7 route.

    These are my steps right?

    Unpack notebook
    Boot into windows 8
Use MSI tools to create recovery disks
    reboot into BIOS
    change to legacy mode
boot from windows 7 disk and install like normal

    RIGHT?

**Also, does every single GS70 come with the sleeve? We ordered ours from Newegg.

Any programs that calls 3D acceleration will activate nVidia GPU.
If you want to run purely off Intel HD Graphics then simply disable the nVidia GPU either in nVidia Control Panel, or Device Manager manually.

Yeh basically, but i think before you do any of that, get a USB 2.0 device, and transfer all the MSI Drivers from the disc that comes with the laptop. Unless you have a external disc reader..

Mine did come with the sleeve. Pretty sure all of them do.

You may also need to repartition the SSD using diskpart command and load RAID driver if applicable.
During Windows installation, you can press SHIFT+F10 to bring up command prompt, type diskpart [Enter].
type lis dis [Enter], if you can see the SSD array then sel dis # (# = the number for the SSD array) [Enter].
    type clean [Enter].
    exit [Enter].
Refresh the HDD screen then you can manage your partition there.
If the Windows Installation doesn't see the SSD array then you got to install Intel Rapid Storage driver using USB flash drive via USB 2.0 port (USB 3.0 isn't supported by Win7 natively).
Then repeat the process above with diskpart.

Ahh gotcha. Yeah. Going to have all the latest drivers burned to a DVD before doing this and I have an external reader.

Also its the one with only a single 128GB SSD so I think the BIOS should be set to just the ACHI setting so windows 7 should see that right?

I saw there were 3 total modes. Legacy, the one windows 8 uses and a 3rd one. Which one do you recommend? Legacy or the other one?

thanks for all the fantastic info!!

AHHHH. Well crap. On my GT70 I have it set to legacy. Any easy way to convert it or just might as well format and re-install?

For my GF's new GS70, if I set it to CSM, will the windows installer automatically pick up the primary HDD (non raid) and install it as GPT?

    Thanks

Just got my first BSOD, quite odd i must say. Was watching 2 Fast 2 Furious then out of the blue it suddenly froze for 1 second and the screen turned black and has this terrible loud buzzing noise and then the BSOD screen showed up... :/

    Why would this happen?

I wasn't doing anything intenseive, just running VLC to watch the movie..

Its really hard to know what would cause a BSOD. You can check the event log but that usually doesn't help out. Get whocrashed Resplendence Software - WhoCrashed, automatic crash dump analyzer, which will generate a legible crash log. Often times it can even read previous logs and may tell you what caused the one that just happened.

Never tried doing that but I can try it and let you know later.

You can also use Bluescreenview by Nirsoft to determine the root cause of crash.

To install the OS in UEFI mode you must boot the optical media or USB stick with windows on it in UEFI mode. It should be automatic from there.

How much boot time gain we talking on an SSD from windows 7 in CSM mode? My GT70 is in legacy on an SSD and boot times are not as fast as windows 8 but are pretty darn good.

Also I forgot to ask. Im assuming I can boot off of a USB dvd drive with the GS70 right? Its just a usb 2 drive so I dont need extra drivers or anything right?

    Thanks

Hey guys, just got my GS70 the other day, from the sweet newegg deal. Overall very happy with it, but 2 things maybe y'all can help with:

the notification lights on the front left are ridiculously bright, anything other than covering them with electrical tape that I can do to dim them?

I immediately did all my updates, and then updated to 8.1, and my trackpad sucked...bad. I tried updating the driver and the scroll function disappeared, so I rolled back to 11.13.3.3, and now the trackpad works and I have scroll-- but in games, if i'm holding down any button, my trackpad completely won't move... is this a bad trackpad that requires sending the whole thing back, or should I maybe go back to Win 8 and use the (newest) 11.13.4.4 trackpad driver? If there's a way to fix it but stay on 8.1, i'd rather not have to re set-up everything but it might be worth it if my trackpad actually works like it's supposed to.

    Thanks in advance!

Bought one of these beauties the other day. The Compal finally died and needed a replacement. :(

The actual reason for this post is to offer a potential work around to a nagging problem with the Bluetooth not working after updating to Windows 8.1 and the Killer Network Suite.

After removing the Killer suite rebooting, using the Killer Cleaner app, rebooting, and installing the newest version of Killer. The Wireless and Bluetooth modules were on and working fine. When waking up from sleep however the Bluetooth module stopped working and it seemed that nothing worked to turn it back on, other than re-installing the software, which is not a solution. SCM app didn't work either, showed it was there but nothing happened when you tried to turn it on.

Checked Device Manager and it showed that the Bluetooth module was there and working properly. So just for the fun of it I tried Airplane mode, FN + F10 , turned it on, Wireless and Bluetooth lights went off. Turned it off and both the Wireless and Bluetooth came on and are working.

Here's the weird part, for no good reason the Bluetooth just stops working. The light goes out and that's that. When this happens, just hit Airplane mode on and off and it starts working again.

This is no means a fix for this issue, but merely a temporary work around till Killer gets its act together and fix the drivers.

On another note. Does anyone else have the background in folders, in web pages and such a weird yellow color? I did, at first. It was driving me nuts. Thought, if this is a new feature to Windows 8, I certainly don't want that. So, I did what any normal geek would do. Internet, here I come. Did all kinds of research to see if there was a fix or patch or something to change the background to the white that I was used too. Ended up with a bunch of junk that almost caused me to re-install the OS. Not really a fan of 8, but am willing to have a crack at it, for a while at least. If things are too much to handle, or really get under my skin, don't have a problem wiping the drives and downgrading to 7.

The straw that broke my back was when watching a movie or show in full screen and the whites were yellow also. Hummm that got me thinking. Maybe I should muck with the display settings and see what happened. The fix was so simple, I actually laughed. Are you ready for this? Turn down the Contrast till the yellow goes away. Only took a minor change to get back to the wonderful white. Do this with Intel Graphics as well as the N'Vidia settings.

Sry for the long post. Just hope this helps somewhat.

Sometimes I use an USB external mouse with my MSI GS70, but as soon as I plug in the mouse, it de-activates the Elan SmartPad. I know that some people like this (and I can understand why), but I'd like the option to switch between using both the external mouse and trackpad without plugging/unplugging the USB mouse.

Tangentially related: is there an "advanced search" option in this forum? I'd like to search before posting, but the simple search in the top right corner is pretty crude.

I tried overclocking the gtx765m in this machine with msi afterburner. I can get core frequency up to 1032.1mhz but the memory clock gets stuck at 1498.5mhz which is even lower than the nvidia spec of 2000mhz.

Any ideas? Am I overclocking incorrectly? I adjusted both sliders in afterburner to +135 and +1000

Keep charging if you are gaming. If you use it for browser / light tasks unplug and run on battery. But don't let it drain bellow 20%.

If you right click on the Track pad icon (Elan pointing devices) in the task bar or find the elan touch pad settings, there you will find all the options for the touch pad including what happens when a external mouse is connected. Try that or try Function key - F3

It will usually charge to about %95 then very slowly to %100, don't worry about it as it will run of AC entirely once the unit is fully charged. The charging light may come back on if the unit is under very heavy load as it uses both the AC input and battery.

My keyboard problems are almost the same as yours. But mine always lights up red and cant change it with the KLM. But if i press FN and - or + it will change colors. It all started for me when i did a recovery back to windows 8.

Here's the latest version of KLM Manager.
    KLM Manager Software

Can you also check and find out what your current version of BIOS and EC are?

Getting the GS70 delivered next week sometime and going to switch to legacy and install windows 7.

Do I need to update the BIOS on this bad boy? Or is windows 7 working well with the shipped BIOS?

Also, if I do, which one should I use?

    Thanks!
