But what they do provide won't allow the camera to shoot at 720p, correct? And, so far nobody can figure out a way to get it to shoot at that resolution? Or, am I misunderstanding the situation?
My current computer doesn't have a webcam, and I have never felt the need to use one. However, if MSI is advertising their webcam as being able to take video at 720p, but their included software shoots at a lower resolution, AND they aren't supplying the appropriate drivers to give their customers the ability to use the supposed HD functionality, then that's just...silly![]()
-
My old HP P.o.S. came with one. It was called YouCam or something like that. It worked pretty well. But I only ever use webcam for Skype and Stickam every now and then. I'd like to have the advertised 720p resolution on the webcam. But I'm not going to pretend that I'm going to be supremely disappointed if I don't. I bought the laptop for many other things beside the webcam. That was just a bonus. So we'll see how it goes.
-
Once I get my unit, i'm going to try installing ubuntu as usual and see if the cam software from that will work in 720p/30fps. EVERYONE! ANYONE! Please let us in the forum know if anyone finds a good cam software that will work with gt780r. This is as silly as giving us 50mm cannons but no one sells the bullets for them. That's my godawful allusion of day... day..., one day left... -

Hello every one,
I'm new in this forum and this is my first post.
I've bought MSI GT780R at 06/07.
Gentech PC shipped it at 06/14.
But I'm still waiting for it,
because it's stuck at the customs for more than 3 days.
Hope that I can see my GT780R soon. -

I am sure you will have it soon. (Darn customs!)

I'll report back regarding the keyboard issue.... Hopefully the issue was an isolated event.
Depending on how his new laptop works out, I may opt out on this one (until MSI has improved the Q/A process on the keyboards....) I am optimistic that he just received a lemon (keyboard lemon)
I feel really bad, because I had recommended the laptop to him (based on all of the praises I've read here...). I hope this doesn't leave a bad taste in his mouth for MSI (nor me for that matter...) -
Like I said, my impression could be completely wrong. It just seems a bit weird to me. Providing an HD webcam, without the software to use it properly, is like providing a Blu-ray drive without an appropriate player. -
So seeing as there's gonna be a need for 3rd party software for the webcam can somebody recommend some that are HD compatible, either Shareware or Freeware

Received this from MSI HQ:
"Hi Ken,
It is a pleasure to meet you. Please be advised that MSI Easy Face 2.0 was written for the purpose of face detection security upon Windows log in. Therefore, with its given function, our software engineers decided not to incorporate video recording and high resolution image. Also, in order to maximize the 720P @ 30FPS of the MS-1761 (GX780 and GT780), the utility/3rd party software should support it or at least be properly configured. For example, even if you have a full HD 1080P @ 60FPS Logitech Webcam, but you are using it for Skype that is limited to 640x480 24FPS, then you cannot maximize it until Skype will open door to support Full HD recording @ 60FPS resolution.
Please don't hesitate to inquire if you have any concerns.
Thank you and Good day!
In Service,
xxxxxxx, msi-Taiwan"
other email:
"I have tested the system with Arcsoft Webcam Companion, the video quality is really 720P and 30FPS during video recording, though you have an option to choose lower quality resolution and FPS such as VGA (640 X 480) in 15FPS. In our MS-1761 case, the only utility we can use to test webcam is Easy Face 2.0 or you can also download 3rd party software such as Many Cam Pro.
On the other hand, the Bison webcam is using the default in-box driver provided by the Win7 OS, so we do not need any driver to support it. Specification wise, the information provided in the specs sheet are correct.
It is possible that lagging and lower FPS than 30 can be experienced in some cases especially if we are having slow internet connectivity or the 3rd party utility being used (for example, SKYPE, MSN, YAHOO and etc) are not properly configured.
Note:
If you continue to experience issue related to webcam, please provide the exact duplicating procedure including the software used, scenario and result in snapshot."
So what they are saying is the webcam indeed required 3rd party software which is not included. -
Thanks ken , you are indeed the best
-
Socthose super long emails they sent you could easily be summed up in just a few words. "Kay kiddies, get 3rd party software if you want 720p 30fps webcam quality." Done. xDD But thanks Ken! I'll find some software for it, even if I never use webcams. Haha. Skype and Stickam don't have 720p resolution, I'm sure... xDD

Hey "ken"shiro , do you think the stock thermal paste is enough to appease this beast(gt 780)??I'm thinking of getting this rig next month(maybe) from gentechpc but still doubt whether I should upgrade the paste to IC diamond or not
-
This is coming from what I've read, so don't get mad and tell me I'm wrong or anything, and definitely listen to other opinions, too. I read that unless you plan on benchmarking a lot and such, that the stock paste would be fine. I didn't upgrade mine.
-
Did any of you try to overclock the GPU and attain safe temperature with stock thermal paste??
-
SaveTheKennies Notebook Consultant
My thoughts when I upgraded my thermal paste was, I'm going to be gaming at the highest quality I can with good performance for hours on end, It's only 35$ so if it doesn't help I didn't lose much. Also reapplying thermal paste is something that terrifies me... so If it delays that at all money well spent
Also anyone who owns it having the same problems this guy is having?
Keyboard being hard to type on, not very responsive and dead spots with the backlight?
YouTube - MSI GT780R design and features (keyboard, ports, display, etc)‏ -

Who knows what MSI was thinking in this? It could have simply been a rush to market...... and perhaps we will see the ArcSoft software yet..... or maybe they felt, leave it to the new owner to decide their favorite software. There is a lot to choose from and personally, there are others I prefer over the ArcSoft software. PLUS, most that are available, even have 'trial' versions so we can sample the mix..... not to mention the 'freeware' available.
In any event, I feel certain we will get this sorted out soon.
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Ken-shiro was gracious enough for us, taking his time and efforts to brutalize the GT780R....... all on the 'stock' thermal compound, MX-2!
Going to IC Diamond 24 Carat is proven NOT necessary, but some will choose to do this for added assurance and measure. IC Diamond was FREE for me, because I swapped processors, but I would have paid for it anyway...... because I prefer added protection, and I like Ken double-checking what the factory has done.

To new owners just unboxing their units, I would say, 'first-thing' after initial start-up, check that the keyboard is fully lit, and then test the keyboard. If any issues are detected whatsoever, either check the connector, or immediately re-box the unit for RMA. This is what resellers will be happy to assist you with, and what the warranty is for, and MSI provides a good one!
Again, incidents of keyboard issues are very low, and it is unlikely new owners will see this problem.
-
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Hardware issue? Quality Control issue? In either event I do not see this as a non-correctable high-tech issue (and I have seen those too), and with solid warranty coverage in hand, the few owners facing this problem will prevail. Hopefully, they will remain few.
-
Hi everyone, first sorry for my english but i will try to tell you somenthing i've noticed on this laptop.
I have the same problem with the keyboard lights showed on this video, but only on the top(ctrl, alt gr and windows button are illuminated): YouTube - MSI GT780R design and features (keyboard, ports, display, etc)‏
and it happens on the same part of the keyboard.
Another thing that doesn't work is the touchpad on/off button. It simply doesn't works... but when i do it by pressing fn+f3, it turns on the light.
Hope you can understand...
And, a question. Have anybody made a review, with a guide(best drivers, clean W7 install, etc.)? -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
As to your keyboard issue..... post #422 above.
As to a clean WIN 7 install...... post#341, but should you desire to bring the system back to a factory state, insure you have first created your MSI recovery disc.
As to drivers, install these from your driver disc, or download the drivers you need from MSI's driver download page. As to the GTX560M driver, a NEW working beta is available from nVidia. See post#331!

In regards to your other comment, I am looking at the full context and scope; I simply disagree with your assessment of the situation. We don't have nearly enough data to say that incidents regarding the keyboard are low, or not low. To be able to say so with any degree of certainty would require us to get information from literally every owner of the machine, which obviously is not practical. Therefore, in my opinion, no definitive conclusion can be made, nor should any be provided.
We could certainly start asking folks that have their machines to start posting comments on their keyboard function, good and bad, to give us an idea of how widespread any problems might be. Anecdotally, all we know at this point is that from the few video reviews available and owners posting on these forums, there do seem to be enough issues that it warrants further investigation. Especially, when we take into account how new the system is, and the amount of people that have theirs in hand right now. Like you said previously, MSI might have moved too quickly in releasing the system. Maybe, maybe not.
The biggest issue here is that nobody wants to receive a defective unit out of the box, and if MSI is doing their job right, nobody should. This early in the game, we are hearing about more systems with issues than I'd personally like to hear about. This is a major concern for me, as A - $1800 is alot of money (upgrades), and B - my system will be for both personal and professional use. If I decide I'm just too uncomfortable with the possibility of getting a "bad" system, I'll end up going with a custom-built Clevo instead. In the meantime, I hope we hear an abundance of positive reviews, so I can look forward to placing my order in a few weeks. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Geez moho, I am not looking for a debate, nor am I here to do so...... but I do disagree on the available data.
I have drawn no definitive conclusion here, and I've have yet to see the perfect notebook without issues of some sort. 'Nit-pick' the GT780R to death if you like, become a GT780R owner, or get yourself a Clevo..... the choice and your opinion, is clearly yours to have.
Good luck with that, alright?
-
Should we post a poll for owners?
Keyboard Status (OOTB)
A-OK
Fine, needed ribbon cable reseated
RMA due to keyboard failure

Mine came in last week and the keyboard has had zero problems so far.

Hi everyone. Can anyone help me with the detailed info on the USB 3.0 controller chip of the GT780R? I'm considering to use it with the Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle video interface, which has known compatibility issues with certain chips. I've addressed the question to the MSI support, but no luck so far, so your help would really be appreciated.
-
GT780R uses Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller. -
-
I should be getting mine tomorrow.
I'm really hoping that there's nothing wrong with the keyboard, and if there is, I can either just reconnect the ribbon cable (or have my dad do it), or I can just send the keyboard to MSI/GenTech and have them send me a new one and use my JSB keyboard until it arrives. But I'm still crossing my fingers that there will be zero issues. I've been waiting on this forever! And yay, I was right on the paste! Haha. I read in plenty of places that the main thing it would do is put your mind at ease. When I get mine, I'll definitely be doing some tests on the speakers and subwoofer, as that's one of the more important things to me. Then I'll test out my new SSD and 7200rpm HDD by transferring over 30GB of music to it from my old PC. Then transferring 8 games from my old laptop. Then downloading the two free games. I might do a clean install of my Windows 7 Ultimate before that, but I'm not sure. Then I have all my must-have programs I have to install... Anti-virus, iTunes, Firefox, AIM, Skype, different software. This is going to be a loooong but rewarding process, no?

Sadly, not right. GenTech would have to authorize delivery to a different address (the HUB) and UPS charges a fee to do this.
I would therefore call GenTech before you go down to the HUB to avoid disappointment. Even then UPS may not accommodate you, so be ready for that as well. -

Unit in possession. Initiating installation and testing phase. As soon as I started the initial installation process, i told Norton i didn't want to install it. Then, in about 1 min into the installation, Norton tells me "installap.exe" is doing something suspicious. Bloatware is fail...
Will update with anything interesting, should they happen. -
Please be kind and write a honest review for us whenever you have time
You too kevin -
Any benchmarks?

Well since today theres a Review on NotebookCheck Review MSI GT780R Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews go check it out
They even stated the next:
"Update: MSI even sent us a second GT780R on account of various problems we had observed with the first (more on that later). This second model, despite its unfinished status, performed better overall. All data or qualities marked "Update" refer to the second model rather than the first. "
Kinda the reason for that was because the other was a pre-production model -
The keyboard saga continues... My neighbor just received his new replace GT780R from NewEgg. The keyboard now types flawlessly. I've even noticed how much easier the keys will push down compared to the last one.
HOWEVER, the not all of the key LEDs will light up.
Question to the experts: If the keys type, but the LEDs dont' light up, is it still ribbon connection issue?
the keys that don't light up are: 9,0, -, =, P, O, [, ], \, ;, '
Also, the 'AltGr' 'Windows' and 'Left Arrow' keys are EXTREMELY bright. Is that normal?
I am so glad I didn't jump on this laptop. Hopefully 'Revision B' in the near future will be better... If anyone has any ideas, please share.
Thanks.
He is PISSED! Nevertheless, he won't be sending this laptop back. He just turned the LEDs off until he can work it out with MSI directly.
Please: No fanboy responses. If your laptop is working fine, then I am happy for you. Obviously there are people having issues with it, and we're trying to get to the bottom of it. -
One more thing...
There seems to be some difference in terms of what free games are included depending on which box you buy...
His first one only came with a downloadable Laura Croft game. This box however had 2 games fully downloadable:
Maifa II and Just Cause 2. Also the free trial of Star Craft II. Mafia II and Just Cause 2 are full games. -
For those who receive their "new hot girlfriend" , do you guys mind record a few videos when playing games like crysis etc?
