Is it hard to replace the optical drive on MSI GT780R ? I might have to buy GT780R from overseas.

The Intel wireless N-130 card is located above the keyboard, beneath the upper touch-board...... and should be very easy to replace.

Also, this wireless card provides bluetooth, so if you want to retain bluetooth functionality, you may want to consider the Intel 6230 card.

Anyone know of any good webcam software? i played with the 'simple camera' but it truly is too simple. I wasn't even able to take photos - only videos. I absolutely LOVE this laptop. I'm currently playing Rift on ultra with about 33 fps!! However, my old laptop that was only used for school and about 1,000 dollars cheaper had more 'fun' webcam software. Any suggestions?

Ken was supposed to get with MSI on the webcam situation. Try tinkering with YouCam and see if you have any luck. Their FREE TRIAL is HERE! Let us know!

Thanks!

Status Update,

Got mine in on Thursday, just in time to go away with it for a long weekend!

Good:
- This thing is so fast in DA II I had to dial everything up to maximum to make it look more smooth! It was making my wife ill. We were used to playing on my old laptop w/ built in Intel graphics and everything dialed way down.

- Got the Momentus XT installed as primary and restored the 3 non-data partitions. I had to resize the OS_Install partition as it was larger than the leftover space on a single 500GB drive compared to the 1TB Raid 0. Also, moved all User data to the 2nd Hard drive as D. Now all OS/apps are on C and all data is on D.

Bad
- I updated the video drivers only to find out there is a reproducible crash with DAII and 275.33, grr! If it affects me, I'll have to dial down to High from Very High for a few weeks until NVidia catches up.

Anyone have a list of apps to uninstall? I uninstalled the French and Spanish versions of a Microsoft Mesh something or other and the two Norton apps. I run different AV on all of my home PCs.

Thanks for sharing your work on the hard drive. I'm always curious how others do it. I'll be getting mine in a couple of days.

Did you install the ssd [edit: oops misread, my bad] by yourself or did you have it done? I'm curious as to how i can replace my hard drive (if and when it happens) now that laptops don't come with recovery disks.

Thanks,

It is not an SSD but a Hybrid, same idea but slower and cheaper. I did the install by myself since I wanted to keep the spare 500GB drive that came with the laptop.

While it did not come with recovery disks, I burned the 3 DVD set of recovery disks. Also, I used Macrium Reflect free to do images of the three non-data partitions. One is a 6GB or so recovery partition, one is the 100 MB windows partition and the third one is the OS_Install partition. The balance of the 1TB RAID-0 volume was a data partition. It was empty, so I didn't bother with it. They restored to the new HD without any issue.

Thanks again for your answer. So, there are 4 paritions by default including the recovery partition? Sounds kinda crazy. 100mb sounds pretty useless though. i wonder what it does. i'm the kind that gets super annoyed over 1gb of space that i can't use so this info is very helpful for me.. I didn't even know they had free disk imaging software XD. i'll give macri a try.

When i get my 780, i'm going to replace the optical with my optical hdd that i've been using with the g50vt for another 500gb of space.

Is anyone having problem I am having?

1. can't make recovery disc. It keeps saying "OS_Install or Data label drive error." I didn't touch anything and it was like this right out of box. I even tried to restore to factory default by using F3 recovery on boot screen. Still no luck.

2. Slow Raid 0 speed. I am only getting 140mb sequential reading speed and 160mb for sequentail writing on crystaldisk. This is noticiably slower than gt660r or gt680r which had 200mb/s for both sequential reading and writing speed.

3. Can you still recover to using F3 on boot screen if you formatted your hdd and installed fresh copy of windows 7 ultimate 64 bit? My C driver is named OS_Installed though and I still see press F3 for system recovery but never actually tried it. I am asking coz I couldn't make recovery disc. I ran out of patient and just installed fresh copy of windows 7 and totally formatted hdd including system reserved space and everything.

I don't have D drive though. It only has C: OS_Install 931gb
It's still same even after F3 recovery. I asked xoticpc too if they modified anything but they told me they didn't touch anything and it only had one drive partition not two(c and d)

I agree. I hate it when companies do this. They install all sorts of Windows bloat and partition the crap out of the drive, and then don't give you the actual Windows disk to allow you to undo it -- just a recovery option that preserves everything they installed and how they partitioned the drives in the first place. Hopefully, we'll see some "Clean Install" options soon, as I discussed with a reseller, otherwise I'll be buying an OEM copy of Win7 just so I can install and partition as I like. I use Macrium currently to back up to an external HD, which also contains my data -- it works very well.

Odd..
Anyway, Name you C: Drive OS_Install and create a D: partion with about 10 GB and name it Data.

Finish the recovery discs, and you can change the names or add/delete partitions.

umm.. too late to do that coz I already formatted my hdd. I don't wanna go through 12 hours long reinstalling process(updates and installing programs, games etc) just to make recovery disc at this point. Not so sure F3 factory reset work now coz I already formatted hdd system reserve etc. :(

btw, new nvidia beta drive 275.50(?) installed just fine on my gt780r without modifying anything.

You did opt for RAID 0, right?

Anyhow, for the issues you have mentioned and since you just purchased this notebook, I would highly recommend you get with your reseller. Rather than here, Xotic would be best suited in assisting you with these matters. I am certain they would gladly assist you in obtaining working recovery disc, or guiding through a fresh install of WIN 7.

Yeah.. I contacted them and they gave me some work around but that didn't exactly solve my problem and I just fresh installed windows 7 ultimate.. I think I will just ask them to send me recovery disc since it didn't work out like they said it would. I never had this problem on gt660r or gt680r.. It wouldn't be much trouble for them to send me working recovery disc. And yes, I am using raid 0. Can anyone tell me their crystal mark raid 0 speed test? I am really curious coz as I said, this reading and writing speed I get is 25% slower than gt660r or gt680r raid 0. They suppose to have same hdd but how come gt660 or gt680r, I've got 200/200 sequential reading and writing speed and only getting 140mb/s for reading and 160mb/s for writing on gt780? Is is just me?

shin777, your hard drive needs to have a 2nd partition name Data in order to burn recovery DVD. it has to be name exactly Data not DATA or data.

Bloatware is the price we pay for getting free WIN 7 HP installation from MSI, but the bloatware is really not that bad in these machines. I've seen alot worse from other manufacturers, and it's not hard cleaning up the GT780R. Optimally, do a fresh install of the OS from a retail or OEM WIN 7 disc.... then install needed drivers afterward.

Do not purchase a separate OEM win 7 disk for a clean install.

You can download a legit copy of win 7 here.

Then use the key from the sticker on the bottom of the notebook. the win 7 version must be the same. Then to activate it you just have to do it by phone with MS's automated system. it takes a few minutes and then you have a clean install and are taking advantage of the key you already own.

can anyone please test their raid 0 sequential reading and writing speed using crystaldiskmark? I am really bothered by this 140mb/s sequential reading speed and 160mb/s sequential writing speed. This is way way slower than gt660r or gt680r's 200mb/s of sequential reading and writing speed. GT780 suppose to have same hdd. :(

Yes, very good info! However an added thought..... preserving or cloning the recovery partition, and creating the recovery disc, MAY be a good option for some. Such as, bringing the system back to a factory state, ie. future sales to another party.

Just a thought......

Yes, very important. Thanks for adding this. :)

It is highly recommended that the recovery partition is preserved or recovery disks are made so that everything can go back to a factory install if an RMA is needed or you decide to sell the notebook in the future.

Another note, and cool little tid-bit I just learned. Unlike some manufacturers, seems MSI has provided the option on their recovery disc, to rebuild and restore the recovery partition to the HDD. Good stuff, so really no need to preserve this partition at all..... just verify you have created good recovery disc!

Thanks Ken!

LOL yeah I remember this video :D :

YouTube - ‪Ken Lee-Valentina's full audition (sings in Spanish, too)‬‏

Yeah the ArcSoft does says MSI on it, however, I haven't got the software to test it yet and still waiting for MSI.

I did ask MSI to make the software available for download. :)

Welcome to the club ImpeKz. :)
