I think he was talking about the barebone model which is based on the GT680

it was approximately $860 ($830 w/ cash discount!) at xoticpc! but now it's $1035 since they removed the GTX460M!

Well I know there are quite a lot of differences between Gt780 and GT680. But barebones I thought still needs CPU etc etc which should bridge the price difference. Maybe I was wrong

I posted when I got my laptop last week about having a typing issue. I made a quick video showing an example of what is happening. Basically, there are certain spots on some keys that dead and do not trigger a response.

    keyboard problems.m4v - YouTube

This has become annoying when typing out longer documents. I am trying to request info on an RMA at the moment, but not sure about paying a 15% restocking fee for customized laptop (optical drive swap and remove ram and one hdd) - seems a little much.

Other than this keyboard issue, my experience with everything else has been great! Hopefully, I can get this resolved...

you should try to contact your reseller about this. if your upgrades were added in by an authorized reseller you shouldn't be charged any fee to transfer over your upgrades to the new replacement unit. i did this with my first unit which was replaced and msi was very cooperative and swapped out my upgrades directly. they even put a new "warranty void" sticker on the bottom of the case. :)

    hope that helps. good luck.

If all you need is a new keyboard, and you have at least a "learner's permit" with a phllips head screwdriver, you could get one from your reseller and replace it yourself.

If you don't want to do that, just send it in and have them replace the keyboard for you.

Good to know. I'm not sure what the warranty void sticker is about. Is it against their policy to upgrade your own components?

I guess I will give GT a call when I get to a phone about this option as shipping will be much cheaper this way. I saw some info about how to access the keyboard, so it should be pretty easy. Ribbon cables are annoying though, but I have learned to manage.

    Thanks for the info.

Hello everyone. I just got my gt780r from xoticpc on friday and its been great so far but I've noticed some things about the screen. On darker backgrounds very noticeable horizontal lines appear on the screen and darker colors seem to not be able to fade very well into different colors. Is the screen supposed to be like this? Is there any way to fix or correct this?

It's very difficult to get the effect on camera but it's clearly noticeable on these:
    http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa359/Meksla/2011-07-30_15-04-44_790.jpg

    http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa359/Meksla/2011-07-30_15-04-54_356.jpg

Compared to the external monitor I connected the laptop to which correctly displays the images and colors:
    http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa359/Meksla/2011-07-30_15-07-40_24.jpg

    http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa359/Meksla/2011-07-30_15-07-47_940.jpg

So far I have tried reinstalling the graphic drivers and tweaking the contrast and gamma settings but I can only manage to get the images to look right if I turn the darker colors into nearly pitch black.

    @Donald, Ken, Justin

I see the biggest issues with user reports its the keyboard, just wondering if you guys have reported to MSI or if MSI knows, and if they are planning on fixing on future batches, specially for the new GTX570 versions.

Anybody using 5.1 headphones with mic? I would like to use my headsot, but the analog outputs are set to front, rear, center/sub, and speakers. Blah! Why speakers instead of 4th as mic?

They are aware of the keyboard issue and will improve, the new shipment shouldn't have this problem.

For those who having issues can contact their reseller or MSI to get the keyboard replace.

im almost pulling the trigger to pre-order GT780DXR, but now seeing the recent problems with screen and keybord, I must say im worried.

Ken, does gentech do any in house testing before shipping this laptop out ?
Im going for long oversea travel early sept, so buy first RMA later is kind of out of question.

I have placed my pre-order and totally understand your concern.

When you order from Gentech (this may be the same with other active forum vendors) there is an area to enter additional comments. You could enter your request and need for a courtesy check.

This is due to "Cinema Pro" being turned on.

Yea, It sometimes causes issues if you turn the laptop off while cinema pro is on, Try turning it on then off then restarting..

Just know cinema pro is causing this issue and its not a hardware issue. (Reports please Ken? :D)

Tried that, it didn't change a thing. Plus if it was actually cinema pro causing the issue shouldn't I also get the problem on the external monitor.

I had to message MSI's support and dropped a line about their gaming laptops, and here is a nice quote from their answer:
"Get the GT780DXR with the 570 when it launches later this month (August)
combined with the corrected Steelseries backlight keyboard, RAID 0
configuration, tons of memory and a great price point you will not be
    disappointed."

So they do know about the keyboard issue and have apparently dealt with it in the GT780DXR.

FYI, I clicked on that -X8 ad from PowerNotebooks. What is this graphics card: nVIDIA GeForce GTX 5760M 192bit w/1.5GB GDDR5? I'm assuming that is a typo in the configurator?

You can request to be fully test before ship but may take extra days.

If you have issues with some keys won't register you can always request RMA for replacement keyboard.

Well they shure as hell listen to the customers. We wanted new models with less RAM and 1 HDD, and got it. We complained about the keyboard, they listen. They were superfast to switch to a new hardcore GPU the moment Nvidia revealed 570M. Asus, the main competitor didn`t care. Lots of customers of that brand is switching to MSI I have heard. Sounds like the resellers have a good connection to MSI techs and get fed new information and RMAing keyboards etc seems very easy to do with MSI.
MSI got almost everything right with this laptop if you ask me, and they are pretty far ahead of G74 from Asus.

So yeah, so far I am very impressed with MSI :)

Yes I know :). But I`m waiting for A) Kingston HyperX SSD to get some user reviews B) 2133 MHz RAM C) To see a review of the 570M to get a certain idea of the heat output.

Won`t wait forever though. Getting a bit frustrated :)
(Yes I know I am a slow adapter lol. Was gonna buy Sandy Bridge laptop in February but that didn`t happen haha)

    Hey there,

I'm just curious. I've had an Asus G73 for a good 7-8 months and while I've had no problems at all, I've found myself eyeing MSI's GT780R, mainly for the nifty looking keyboard and better gpu.

I'm wondering if it would be a reasonable upgrade and if those keyboard problems I'd been reading about had been fixed.

Well the GTX 570M itself is like 30%ish faster than 460M. :)

As for the keyboard, they say the DXR have corrected keyboard. What is corrected and if the 780R also have that keyboard I don`t know but waiting for an answer :)

Here is some other points to consider:

Dynaudio speakers which makes extremely good sound
Brushed aluminum on palmrest and lid
Cool customizable LED keyboard, and not the boring white light you get from Asus
Smaller chassis compared to G74SX but same screen size. G74 is HUGE

I just got my GT780R (057US preconfigured model on newegg) today.

So far so good, just a couple questions for anyone that knows:
    1) Is there any software or any way that I can fool around with the keyboard layout/configuration? I find it really annoying that the Windows key is to the right of the space bar and not the left.
    2) I installed the Sentelic touchpad driver that I found on these forums (v9.0.4.8). This SIGNIFICANTLY improved the virtual scrolling abilities of the touchpad (without the software it was hard to get it to register). Is there anyway to increase the sensitivity of it? Currently, doing a finger scroll is like doing PAGE DOWN, where as I am used to it acting like I was pushing the down arrow.
Yes, I noticed that there are two virtual scrolling techniques in the config, one for tapping the corners of the touchpad termed "scrolling", while the finger dragging technique I like is called "paging" which scrolls by page. Is there anyway to make "paging" into "scrolling" without having those dumb tapping regions?

I also like the 2-finger gesture for scrolling, but that too is like paging down. I need smooth scrolling :p.

They sure very easy to work with. when I ask them about the system won't boot with USB bootable device been connected to the laptop, they said they will fix it. And about they keyboard issue they will fix it as well.

I have a customer who has keyboard issues in Saudi Arabia, they shipped a new keyboard to Saudi Arabia for him.

    Very good customer service indeed.

Congrad's on your decision. The MSI Canada site list reseller options here:

MSI USA - Where to Buy

Canada is listed at the bottom of the page. I appreciate the "buy local" benefits. But you may want to consider buying from one of the forum member vendors as they offer customization which I did not see in the MSI vendor listing for Canada.

Right click the task bar icon down on the lower right of your desktop and click exit. If you find a button that you need that does not respond then go back into the start menu and reopen the software. Most of the buttons still work with the software turned off.

Ever since i got the GT780R, i can't look back at my 1722. I feel sorry for it! This pc is just a beast. I don't think i will go back to a matte screen either. It just seems more vivid to me with the glossy!

Believe it or not, they first denied it twice to me and my friend, and they also refused to send anything. They said all they can do is to issue an RMA, and we'd have to pay the return shipping + be out of laptop for 2 weeks.

To make matters worse, fan boys here tried to squash the issue, claiming how 'perfect' their laptop was.

Anyhow, I am glad MSI is turning around. I am ready to pull the trigger on the new DXR to replace my aging Gateway FX.

None yet. NCIX is often the first one to have them in stock (or at least offer a pre-order). From what I've seen, it's usually 1-2 weeks after the US release. Newegg.ca then follows another 1-2 week later, but often at a lower price.

The high-end laptop market in Canada is fine, but everything else below that is a nightmare.

I'm not sure about our options as far as buying in the States go. It seems to either require a 100$+ express shipping option, or risk paying border fees, which are apparently horrendous.

New BIOS 309 for GT780R with RAID controller is here:

    GT780R with RAID BIOS 309

    GT780R without RAID BIOS 109

    Boot Priority changes to:
    1.ODD
    2.HDD
    3.USB Device
    4.Lan

    Note:
If the ODD inserted is not bootable (DOS, WinPE, or OS), the system will automatically load to the HDD.

It is possible to boot a USB Device instead of a HDD, right ? There's something like a boot selection screen ?
