You can turn the keyboard lighting off, or the right 2/3 of the keyboard lighting off using the touch sensitive button on the power strip, or you can turn any third of it on or off using the KLM software that can be opened from your System Tray.

hey guys, im planning on getting an one of these machines by the end of august so i can have it ready for college. I have the money, so should I buy it now? Or wait out a little bit to see if the new 570m model comes out? What would you do if you are in my position? Thanks for the help guys!

sorry, I should make my question clearer. On other brand laptop, after certain period of NO typing (few seconds) the keyboard backlight will automatically turn off.
on GT780R it's either on or off manually. no automatic off.

Resellers on this forum are expecting the new model between August and September, my opinion it will be well worth the wait. The main upgrade between the current model and the new model is the Gtx570m which is a much better gpu. I would at least wait till we no more like price and specs before you make your decision.

That is correct, but you can turn them off manually quite easily with the touch sensitive button on the power strip above the keyboard.

I spoke with the MSI Rep in uk on the phone and he says that the GT780DXR RRP in UK is going to be £1600, so I decided to get a alienware 17x R3 with 580m GPU, blueray and upgraded I7 2.2 cpu and 1080p screen for £1525 delivered end of July.

There should be a peel strip on it... it looks scratched and dull until you do. It was the hardest (relative) strip to get off.

I don't know if it's MUCH better. The performance is definitely higher on the charts, but not sure if the gain from the 560 is worth the extra $$$.

Start price is $1999, so not cheaper.

    Plus it's ugly.

    Plus it's owned by Dell.

(Actually to get the M18x with 16GB RAM, RAID 0 HDD pair, etc... is Dell Price $3,809.00) That for dual GPUs (really???) and single 580M not an option, but if it were, then subtract $600.

    Not even close...

    And it's ugly.

Do we even know what it cost yet? If the 570m is as fast as the 6970m then your looking at a >30% increase over the 560m. The two gpu's are not in the same league.

how many of you are having keyboard lag, skip, unresponsive stroke problem on their gt780r? I noticed keyboard skipping stroke, delay it or etc makes me unable to type at fast speed or playing certain game but I've been generous about it by keep saying to myself it's just my imagination. Unfortunately, it's not. It's just getting worse and worse and now I am the point where I can no longer play games or typing anything without going back and retype or press it 3-4 more times for keys to register. I am so disappointed about this so called steelseries keyboard that I had extremely high hope for. First battery draining problem while it's completely shut off and now this keyboard.. I am sending my laptop back for replacement. :(
How many of you are actually having this problem?

GT683's keyboard looks like better for me. In practice.
GT780's keyboard has more issues (floating, backlight)

Ken, new GT780DXR will have only new 180W AC, or PSU too?

im also having keyboard issues , missing keystrokes , and sometimes im getting multiple letters on single stroke , hope this is not an hardware issue , also eject button sometimes doesnt respond :S

@shin777 does that mean the missing keystrokes increasing with the passage of time?

btw any new release of bios or firmware for this laptop that fix the issues? or anyone got their problem solved by contacting msi other than replacing the unit ?

I had the unit for almost 4 weeks now and I think it's gotten worse coz it's noticibly lagging, skipping, missing strokes all over now. I am gonna RMA it and see if replacing unit fixes the problem. If it doesn't, I will just ask for money back coz steelseries was one of the main reason I went for gt780r and it failed to live up to my expectation so far. I love the screen though.. besides beautiful screen and pretty lightning in keyboard, everything else failed for me so far.. :(

Now I did some research and a lot of ppl are having keyboard problems.. very same keyboard problem as me. I am surprised this model hasn't been recalled yet. They should replace us to new gt780dxr to make up all this mess they've made. Advertising steelseries keyboard to such degree and it completed didn't live up to anything they said. :(

Interesting! Funny, but looking at the Intel link, the 2630QM, 2820QM, and 2920XM are all supported..... but oddly, I do not see the 2720QM.

I use TrueCrypt quite a bit myself. I'll check this out and look at my bios when my GT780DXR arrives.

    :)

EDIT: I just received word that MSI (like Asus) does not currently support AES in their bios options..... sorry!

    4 weeks, and you haven't RMA'ed yet?

With the long laundry list of problems you have posted in this forum, and the MSI forum, I can certainly why this notebook is a fail for you. Let's see..... replaced OS, HHD's too slow, can't create recovery disc, battery issues, and now the keyboard lags.

Yeah, why bother with an RMA? None of this could be any of your fault, and you've obviously lost patience here. Just save yourself the headaches, get your money back, and get yourself a Toshiba, Asus, Alienware, or Sager. Problem solved! ;)

    :)

I've been using my GT780r every single day, a minimum of 14 hours per day, for over 2 weeks now and I have never noticed the peel strip on the s-bar until I read your posting! And I even use the s-bar A LOT!

Wow... taking the peel strip off really made the s-bar look great! :p

I keep seeing these blanket statements made, like; "Ive done some RESEARCH", there are "A lot of problems with THIS"..... "A lot of people THAT"..... "They ought to do a RECALL", and now the laughable, "They should replace us to new gt780dxr" (Yeah, keep dream'in!), etc., etc., etc.

Count the compaints! Show me! Go ahead, get your Google on! Show me actual complaints, and not just 'hits' or repeat complaints. Count them! Even without knowing actual sales numbers, common sense should dictate the number is few, as compared to the whole.

Not to say there have not been issues, but placing this in proper perspective the complaints are really FEW..... especially in light of the ratio to sales, nationally or globally. I can not imagine why anyone would put up with such an issue for 4 weeks. RMA's are a possibility, a reality, and happen with any brand or model. It's very simple..... if this issue concerns you, find another notebook of interest. And while you are at it, do please let me know if you find that RMA-free, problem-free, perfect notebook.

    :)

why didn't I RMA my unit for 4 weeks? Coz I've been trying all this try this, try that blah stuff from msi and vendor I bought this from for 4 weeks and now it just turned out to be waste of my time and effort on broken unit for 4 weeks. And I am indeed going for money back this time for all this crap I've been going through. I had gt660r and gt680r and I had none of these issues so I've been complaining a lot about this gt780r. It's just been pain in the butt considering this suppose to be the best msi laptop ever released but apparently, it just failed on me. I am gonna call both vendor and msi and gonna get my money back and get other brand. Probably toshiba or sager this time. I may come back to msi again when gt880 comes out with fixed problem but I am done with this crap gt780r. I've had enough.
my research? Look at all this complains of keyboard on reviews of gt780r from many estores, forums. That's good enough proof that there's something wrong with gt780r. I haven't seen any keyboard problem complain for gt660r or gt680r reviews. I tried and tried to love this gt780r and been patiently following all this so called advice and tech support from msi and vendor I bought this from but nope, it just turned out to be I am an idiot for listening to them all this time. :(

Ok, I hear ya..... though I am not sure, " Coz I've been trying all this try this, try that blah stuff from msi and vendor" really explains the 4 week wait, and not RMA'ing from the beginning. Sorry, but if I spent this kind of money, on anything, it would be returned for replacement or refund immediately. Heck, after 4 weeks, will you even be able to get a full refund? Perhaps try not to 'love' anything, least not till it meets your satisfaction.

Anyhow, I can already see you won't be recommending the GT780R. Good luck with that refund, and Toshiba or Sager!

I am not sure I would be able to get full refund but it's worth a shot. It's not my fault I had to drag things this long. It's such a shame that I have to let go of this beautiful laptop coz I really like it.. Minus unresponsive keyboard and battery problem of course.

Why don't you just contact your vendor and have them help you get the issues straightened out?

It is clear that the majority of users do not have these issues, and that both issues can be corrected either with a repair or replacement.

If you really like it, why throw the baby out with the bathwater?

Sorry, but from what I am reading, it' does appear you have some of the blame:

With the passage of time here, a full refund may not be an option for you..... but perhaps things can still end well. It may turn out that an RMA remains the only option. If so, and you get a satisfactory GT780R, then what?

Perhaps next time, be more assertive, and RMA at the first sign of trouble. My feeling is had you done this from the beginning..... with a replacement unit in hand, you could have been a 'happy camper' here, rather than a 'grumpy gus'. Seems to me, by delaying the RMA, you only extended the misery.

Anyhow, I hope things work out well for you.

    :)

EDIT: And Yeah.... Like Donald just said! A good question here might be, Who is your vendor?

    :D
