Well, I've been following this thread for quite some time and decided not to post until I actually received my GT780. I bought my unit from Amazon and haven't really noticed too many issues with my laptop. My only complaint right now is that my touch pad was unresponsive/jumps every once in awhile, but i downloaded the new driver for it and it seems to have fixed the problem. The only issue now is that I can't scroll with the touch pad anymore on the sides? Yeah, maybe someone can help me out there. As for the BLK, I do notice that around the jkluoipm,./ area is a little dimmer but I don't really mind. My unit does not have any unresponsive keys or hard to press keys like I've seen other people have so that's good. I haven't really had time to play any games yet, but i received the Lara Croft game, and I might try and play that this weekend. Also, anyone have any idea where I can find the serial # on this thing? I want to register it. But I can't seem to find the serial #... Anyways thanks for making this thread, it's been really helpful.
EDIT: Well, apparently vertical scrolling is disabled when you upgrade your touchpad drivers, so remember to enable through the touchpad icon in your tray!

Hi xxtomixx, WELCOME To The Party!
The Serial # should be on a label, on the outside of the shipping box.

So I just got my External Harddrive from GenTechPC since it was out of stock when I bought my laptop, I Plugged it in and it worked fine so just to see how fast it was I tried to move a game on to it. A bunch of errors popped up saying it couldnt move the file and now the drive won't show up anymore, did I something wrong? Any ideas?
Also the newegg reviews make me really sad, its a great computer with some unfortunate problems. Glad mine came problem free -

Well it is the keyboard that they write about at newegg.
- Keystrokes not registered. Probably an easy fix to this after some time. Asus G-series had the same problems and a BIOS or driver update took care of it I think. But if some buttons need to be pressed harder than others, then MSI is unable to fix it
- Keyboard light. There is the tape method described in the other thread that could make a even light in the keyboard. Nobody have tested it, so I don`t know if it is true or not. Other than this there is virtually nothing to do. Just live with it I guess.
- Touchpad going crazy when using it. There is already an updated driver that fixed it.
Maybe MSI will release a new revision that take care of some of the problems? Like the DXR version? I think it is a shame to feature a Steelseries keyboard and market it but still have lots of problems with it compared to the other cheap laptops around that doesn`t have any of this.
-
the keyboard doesn't register well unless you hit the center of the button. of course, the problem isn't severe since most buttons are hit squarely while typing, but larger buttons like the spacebar are pretty noticeable. try hitting the space bar on the very edges and see if it registers well. i think steelseries/msi brought an item too quickly to market without proper testing.
the updated driver doesn't entirely fix the touchpad's issues either. in some cases, it can make things a little worse for other features such as the right-side scrolling features and its sensitivity.
i had to rma my first unit with msi and the second unit is better. the trackpad is stable and the keyboard registers better. however, the usual dim spots (i,o,p,j,k,l areas) are still noticeable while the bright spots (alt, windows key area on lower right side) are still bright. to many of you this isn't a problem, but in my opinion i don't think this is proper execution by steelseries/msi.
i love the laptop, but so far i've had it gone (through rma process) longer than i've had it at home happily usining it.
p.s. are your hard disk lights blinking constantly? is this normal? i don't recall my first unit doing that but the second unit does this consistently even if there's no disk activity (under resource monitor). anyone care to chime in? -
Btw, it is really hard to get a hold of MSI customer service RMA department, it took me both time over half an hour to be to speak with some one...The RMA online link shows nothing, not even if the laptop arrived...
Any way, finally some one just called me from MSI RMA department, asking about GenTech upgrades, I told him several times that I entered all the information on the MSI checklist form, all my upgrades (i7-2720QM, Intel N 6230 Wireless-N + Bluetooth and 6X Blu-Ray Re-Writer/8X DVDRW Super Multi... I ask him do you have the information I sent with the note and upgrade he was a clueless...
MSI customer service wanted to know how to replace the laptop, please guide me in this one...
Do they send you my new laptop and you put again the same upgrades????
Please Help -

Ken, after shutting down the computer the first time and rebooting it, it says that there is "No operating system" and won't boot up! Everything else was fine, even the keyboard, but now this happens!
Please, what do I have to do from here? Is the hard drive faulty or something?
EDIT: After turning it off/on a couple more times, it resumes Windows just fine. What is happening? Is the connection not good with the hard drive or is something else being screwy with it?
I've also tried installing the new 275.33 NVIDIA driver but the setup wizard doesn't recognize the 560m card. -
275.33 is not compatible with the 560 in this rig, use the new beta drivers, 275.50. -
Usually when it says "no operating system" that means it can't find the boot loader from the USB device.
One customer called today with exact same problem and removed the USB drive works fine.
Another customer also has same problem and we couldn't figure out why, finally he removed the mouse which is the Steelseries mouse and it has built-in USB flash drive and system boots up fine.
If it's not there it could be the drive the drive is loose inside the external hard drive enclosure, you can try open it up to check.
If the drive is not loose inside and can't be detect, send it back to us. -
ken when gentechpc going to open a center in other countries??
-
I tried installing the 275.50 driver update but it still says that it isn't compatible with "this version of Windows". Quite frustrating, really.
Anyways Ken, it works like a charm. Thanks for the work you put into this. Finally a high-powered computer to call my own the keyboard is pretty much solid on this one except for the mid-keyboard lighting, but it's not too faint and I mainly only use the left side of the keyboard for obvious reasons.
Is there anything I should do with the laptop as of now as far as updates? I've gotten MSE and MalwareBytes but I don't know if I should install anything else. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Verde 275.50 Driver
Also MSE with the OS Windows Defender will do nicely, and is lite on system resources. I would just use the latest freeware scan of MalwareBytes, to periodically double-check the system when strange occurances or critters are suspected, that MSE has failed to detect.
____________________________________________________________
EDIT: Try the 275.50 again..... it should work fine. Also make sure you D/L from the link above. Some have attempted to erroneously install the desktop package, because they downloaded from the wrong link.
I hope this helps.......

What I would do is go to BIOS and go to Boot options and only enable boot #1 for primary hard drive #2 for optical drive and disable #3 and #4, especially for boot from Ethernet is very annoying.
the drivers I download form nVidia wouldn't work , need to mod the inf in order for it to work.
Thanks to xMAR99 too, he posted before me while I was away, very nice guy indeed.
What you should do now is enjoy the laptop and have fun.

Notes:
The Realtek HD Audio Manager can cause games to minimize as it steals focus from them.
CPU Throttling is increasing, Happens in GTA IV every couple of minutes which causes the fps to drop to ~6. -
Also Ken, Can you tell me what interface the 560 is using?
Is it MXM 3.0b or Integrated? -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
If so, this should bode well for the GT780R on the new driver's final release. Those getting the GT780DXR will probably go thru the same situation..... a delay, waiting for the new MSI 570M's HW ID to become part of the Verde package.

-
Maybe...
Also because laptop freezes when I load up some games... Probably due to the OC, will test without it soon. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Don't take my word as an authority on anything, but my money says, 'YES', and it will swap with ease...... BUT, I am also betting the 570M will be somewhat a controlled species, making it a little tough getting your hands on one for a while...... least till they become somewhat yesterdays news.

Any release date for the GT780XDR? and price tag? Thanks
-
It's not about the money money money , we don't need your money money money , we just wanna make the world dance , forget about the price tag.
-
See if that works..... -
And xMAR99, I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium. It [275.50] isn't recognizing my system as "compatible". How did you get the driver to work for you? -

Attached, 2 pdf:
1st pdf MSI RMA checklist form, with all my upgrades and notes, I also included on the note to MSI your suggestion to check the memory sticks...
2nd pdf it was my GenTech PC invoice of all the upgrades, just to refresh what a got...
MY email has a lot of question and no answers?
If in the near future, shall we say about couple months from now, I decide to upgrade GPU with the nVidia GTX 570m, how this would affect my warranty with MSI???
Please, I am in a black hole here...I also use this laptop to work...Needed for more than gaming...
I just do not want to get a refurbished laptop from MSI...
Never...
This monster rested on my hands for about two weeks only...
Starting to get a bit irritated with this ordeal...
I am fond of the monster, but I am also not blinded by the flaws on the laptop...I read all the reviews here on the site, and there are problems going about this model... -
Overall I'm very happy with this machine. The only problems I have are with the keyboard. Most smaller laptops do have strange keyboard layouts and I've always gotten a desktop replacement so that I could have a full keyboard with one or two odd keys. This one, in general, is ok... the HOME/END fiasco and the shifted spacebar are the only big problems. I do 'sense' there are keys that get dropped, but I also figure that will fix in time as the keyboard gets worked in.
I'm slowly getting used to everything and where to press keys. The keyboard remapper has helped, though it is still with issues.
Ironically, just before my machine came, for the first time in my (long) life I heard someone say they did not like the HOME/END keys and I defended them. They must have worked for MSI or SteelSeries. -

YouTube - Asus G73SW CPU Throttling in GTA 4‏
Once you have setup the boot options press F10 to save and exit the BIOS.
They will swap a new unit for you and move all of your upgrade parts to the new unit not refurbished. -
Is the CPU throttling a Intel processor or notebook manufacture issue, I've seen the asus thread, but there are a lot of notebooks with Intel sandy bridge processors, do they all suffer from downclocking?

New GT780R sku:
Newegg.com - MSI GT780R-057US Notebook Intel Core i7 2630QM(2.00GHz) 17.3" 16GB Memory 1.5TB HDD 7200rpm Blu-Ray Burner NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M
comes with Blu-Ray Burner, 1.5TB HDD and hopefully improved keyboard?
According to specs, it has 4 speakers? Must be a typo... -
With my previous Dell computers, the keyboard was a user replaceable part. Is this something we can order from MSI, the improved one, and replace ourselves without losing the machine for weeks of support time?
-
hey guys just wanted to say hello, new member here and decided my first post would be on this awesome thread, i havent orderd the msi laptop yet but will be waiting for the newer version with the 570m, read almost all of the 130 pages last night, and i must say u guys got me hooked on this laptop, i cant wait for the 780dxr, i cant wait on more info on it to surface, and i have this saying stuck on my head and hoping to sayit soon "i just order my gt780dxr yesterday, now the waiting game lol"

klkitchens, that depends on how good of a technician you are. Please call me to get a resolution to your keyboard issue.

Thanks xMAR99, the driver installed flawlessly.
Except now, the P1 button on the S-Bar above the keyboard doesn't seem to work and I can't turn on turbo. Is there a way to fix it/remap it to another button? -
Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (Standalone Installer) -
Upon further inspection, it just takes a while for the button to actually light up and turn on Turbo boost. It's fine now. Thanks though, Ken.
-
Does this mean there is an improved keyboard? I am confused.... -
Will recovery disc able to restore recovery partition if I setup my HDD like these
- 120gb SSD => 1 partition
- 500gb HDD => 2 partition label = "MEDIA","DATA"
or "DATA" must be in 1st HDD ?
Is engineer sample intel 6230 really bad ? My local shop only have 6230 ES on stock.
