Hey ken you guys don't bring in the b3 version??
-
That would have been nice. I don`t need 2 harddrives
-
I wanted a b3 version because upgrading the hdd myself is much cheaper
-
Anyway fellow folks , just wanted to ask currently what backpack is good enough to accomodate this monster rig??I wanted a backpack with enough space to hold this laptop and also enough space to hold my books , iphone , ipad 2 and other stuff that we usually will bring to college and also when we're hanging out with friends.I know there's one call everki beacon but is there any other choices besides this backpack??

My best guess is the GT780-B3, is NOT an official MSI SKU. If this be the case, what is the GT780-B3? A Pro Star creation? A GT780 barebones unit that Pro Star custom builds in house, and they have dubbed it the B3? If so, what is the extent of the warranty? Is only the barebones unit itself covered by MSI, and all other parts are cover by Pro Star's in-house one year warranty? Will MSI's extended 1 year warranty apply to these units?
Also, if these units originated from barebones units, what can be said of the other component used to build these units, such as the DDR3 memory? Same spec, quality, and fully tested within these units?
There is truth in you get what you pay for, so I am suspect here. It would be very nice if some of our assisting resellers here, could shed some light on this topic.
As to the $80 difference in the 2720QM processor upgrade..... other questions arise. Reputable resellers obtain their OEM processors from authorized Intel dealers. And these resellers are very competitive in their pricing, so is Pro Star's price an error? If not, where does Pro Star obtain their OEM processors...... a mass lot, obtained from an eBay dealer in China?
Again, I suspect this GT780-B3 is not an official MSI SKU, and simply a marketing ploy for your dollars. I may be wrong, but the facts on this will come out soon enough. Personally, my preference will be an official manufacturer's SKU.
Just food for thought here, and questions to consider. Normally if it's too good to be true, something is amiss, somewhere in the mix.
@caramel1995, the Everki Beacon is a perfect fit, and also the Targus XL is a great choice.
-
Striker why don't you try to email prostar and ask them about it and at the same time ask MSI about it and see what's their answer??

Woo hoo!!
My laptop just arrived this morning and I've been using it the whole day up till now!
So far,I've faced no issues at all thanks to Ken
It's sad though that the GT780R that I got came with a free Tomb Raider instead of Just Cause 2 & Mafia 2 =/
Anyway,loving this rig!! <3 -
Many days has passed but still there's no news regarding benchmarking , review and video about gtx 580m and gtx 570m
, i can't sleep this few days because of it

The -B3 version is a Pro-star creation. They are violating MSI policy in doing this so warranty issues will indeed be in question.
Interesting that they did it at the beginning of a 3 day weekend so no one at MSI can do anything about it until Tuesday. -
I hope I get Tomb Raider with mine. Already have Just Cause 2 and no interest in Mafia 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 or any such dreck! -

Yeah that`s what I thought. Never heard about them before and I guess they don`t have too many customers as well since they have 9 reviews and they date all the way back to early 2000s.
You guys should buy from Powernotebooks or Gentech or Xotic. They are very active in this forum and provide much appriciated help and should be awarded for doing so. Plus they all have (with the exception of Gentech which I cannot find there) almost perfect score (10 out of 10) at reseller rating plus thousands of reviews there. Plus they are known to provide excellent service. -
Should i be worried about my warranty?
-
Hi guys, I've bought the gt683r but due to the similarity with the gt780r maybe you can help me.
The THX sound effect is nice, but I like more the sound quality of my GX660 (which I sold last month). I tough both systems would sound the same, but in the GX660 there was an option in the Realtek Audio control panel called DTS surround. This sound effect is now missing and has been replaced by the THX thing which is nice but I prefer more dts.
Is there any way to bring DTS back? I've tried installing the drivers of the gx660 but the option still does not appear. -

No, MSI will not be releasing such a configuration on the MSI GT780R.
-
So after hearing purchasing the B3 model from prostar and now hearing that it is not an official model and that my warranty might not be fulfilled I'm a bit worried about the whole thing. If i sent it in to MSI for repair and they saw the two empty ram slots would they immediately suspect something was up? I feel as if as long as the warranty sticker isnt messed with, they wont worry much about it. Thoughts anyone?
-
But i thought easily changeable stuff will not void the warranty??Like hdd and ram
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
The warranty sticker is on the outside covering a part of the bottom panel so you cannot open the back panel without destroying the sticker.
Whether MSI would honor the warranty is an open question...some say don't worry about it, but MSI could take the position at any time that once the sticker is broken the warranty is void. -
Okay but i thought resellers have the ability to replace those stickers and thats why they can add and remove certain components to a custom laptop. Also arnt the other two ram slots beneath the keyboard?
-

How is Pro Star doing this unofficial GT780-B3 model...... barebones units? I did not think these were available, least not yet. They would not actually cannabalize valid official SKU units, would they? Also, I would agree, it was interesting this popped up during the holiday weekend.
-

Two pieces are under the keyboard, two pieces are under the back panel. Since they would have to remove the back panel to remove the hard drive, it is unlikely, although possible, that they would then take the time to remove the keyboard to remove the two memory pieces from there.
Until MSI can address this issue on Tuesday all we can do is speculate. At this point, we don't even know if Pro-star is one of the resellers that is authorized to do modifications.
Frankly, since this offering clearly violates MSI policy, I for one doubt that they are an authorized MSI Build to Order reseller.
Stay tuned until late Tuesday when MSI has an opportunity to address this issue.
There is no barebones of the MSI GT780R so they are not doing it that way. What they are doing is pulling components and offering the MSI GT780R with a lesser configuration for a lesser price...major violation of MSI policy to which I expect MSI will respond quickly. -
That's mean i can't open up this msi laptop to clean the heatsink or reapply paste since it'll void the warranty??
-

So you think its a good idea to cancel my order and wait a couple days?
-
-
-
But i scared it might void the international warranty if i tear open the warranty sticker so that i could open it up and clean the heatsink

Perhaps give MSI a call on this!
Obviously here, other resellers will not be offering the GT780-B3 model, unless they decide to do business, the Pro Star way. If Pro Star is violating the manufacturers policies, this would raise red flags and speak volumes to me.
I guess you have to ask yourself if you are willing to accept the risk. If not, perhaps get a refund and purchase from another reseller.

So, you feel Pro Star is indeed cannabalizing a valid SKU (likely the GT780R-012US), and this is nothing more than a marketing ploy to attract budget minded purchasers?
Hmmmmm, I wonder what they do with all those MSI spare parts, LOL!
YES, please keep us posted on this! Hopefully MSI will act swiftly and accordingly. I could see where this could be a problem for competing resellers, and consumers alike. Please let us know!

Just to offer another opinion, I currently have the BigFoot Killer wireless (1102), and I have been very pleased with speed, connectivity, and range. IMO, it's a worthy consideration.
