I'll give my 2 cents also.

    1. the fan is always on but not autible in any of these scenarios. If you are in a really silent room you might be able to hear the air motion but not the fans. But this is still almost dead quite.

    2. When gaming with or without turbo, leaving the fan to auto it is silent until it hits a thermal marker that causes the fan to throttle up. If you hit the hot key on the s-bar to run the fan at 100% then it is noticable, but less than my G73 at 100% for comparison. Gaming with the fan at 100%, I do not notice the fan noise at all and I hate fan noise.

    3. Yes the fan is temperature controlled automatically. But, the fan only throttles when the temp gets too hot. I don't know at what temp though. With mine, so far it only throttles up after gaming for an extended period and it speeds up for 30 seconds to a minute and then throttles back down for another 15-20 minutes or so. It has never throttled up under any other task.

Ok, it's official, my GT780R is sold!

Ken tested, and Ken approved, when the buyer unboxed it, it sold itself. Everything was perfect.....keyboard, screen, 7.2 WEI, 16 sec. boot time, 4 sec. shutdown...... bout cried letting it go, but thoughts of the GTX570M made me feel better. :D

So, the waiting game begins for the GT780DXR! Git Er' Done Ken!

BTW, for those who were interested in the Everki Beacon backpack, the fit was as though it was designed for the GT780R. So much so, the buyer wanted me to sell him the backpack too. I wasn't able to grab a quick snapshot, but trust me, it's a perfect fit! I'll post a photo or two when my new GT780DXR arrives.

    :)

mkang and MrSeaBass, thank you all for explaning how the fan is working with the GT780R. :D

Looks like it manage to stay fairly silent and it doesn`t have that insanely annoying throttle up and down every minute like some laptops do have. Another score for this laptop.

    +rep for you both :)

Holy smokes... 16 sec boot time? Mine is 70 sec or so factory setting and base equipe. Does SSD make a difference during gaming also? I might be interested in breaking my RAID 0 if SSD can speed up gaming.

    Nice review of Asus G74SX-3DE.
A three things I want to mention though. The GT780R unit reviewed is not the model we get. The reviewed unit had 5400rpm in raid config, but we get 7200rpm in raid config. Even the 5400rpm hard drives kicked G74SX's butt though... probably because ASUS does not offer RAID config in their G series.

The screen in ASUS G74SX-3DE is matte 120hz 3D capable screen. G74SX A1 and 3DE have exact same graphics card and config, but the screen is the only difference. We can safely assume that the $240 difference between the two is from the display monitor. The stock display on ASUS G74SX A1 will probably be even with the matte display of GT780R in terms of contrast and color spectrum. 3DE is $240 upgrade from the stock display, meaning $240 more expensive display than GT780R's screen.

The full noise of 44.8DB mentioned on notebookcheck to compare ASUS 74SX -3DE to GT780R is bogus at best. 44.8 DB is when you turn on the turbo fan on to maximize the fan's speed. This level of fan level is not achievable during gaming or any other activity than through turbo mode. In reality, 39.5DB is about the loudest you will ever hear without activating the turbo fan mode. To compare this to ASUS's max load 37.5DB sounds very much biased. Simply put, ASUS gets to 37.5DB and you cannot turn the fan higher. GT780R gets to 39.5DB and you can turn the fan higher if you want to.

You can see even more bias in the temperature rating section where both GT780R and ASUS G74SX-3DE CPU throttles down to 800MHz and they imediately start blaming the power supply for GT780R, but carefully explains that ASUS G74SX -3DE isn't affected during gaming and says fumark GPU stress test is unrealistic to everyday experience. Even though the two laptops did exact same thing under FUMARK, they word it so GT780R seem like it failed under stress and ASUS G74SX throttled down for safety.

All in all, the notebookcheck review of two units sound extremely biased to me. Maybe the testing team was soured with pre-production unit and did not give the new unit a good look or maybe it was something even more deeper that I do not see. I was set on buying ASUS G74SX -A1 when it came out, but I am glad I bought MSI GT780R instead and saved a couple of hundred bucks in my pocket. Notebookcheck shame on you.

Yeah, it was fast, but I probably should have mentioned, it just got a clean WIN 7 install...... and with the exception of the OS, updates, and drivers, no other software was installed, including antivirus. IMO, an SSD generally makes a big difference in everything, dramatically increasing responsiveness, load, seek, and read times.

A reseller is listing a new model, GT780R-B3. It only has one hard drive and 8gb ram, needless to say the price is lower as well. I am not putting up a link or naming the reseller out of respect for the ones that have been helping us out in this forum. I just wanted to know from the resellers that do come on here when and if they will have this model? I like the idea of getting this version and down the road adding an SSD in the other bay.

$80 cheaper to replace the 2630QM with 2720QM compared to Gentech and Xotic.

We need to be careful here, because the resellers are VERY competitive with pricing. Either there has been a reduction in processor pricing overall, or Pro-Star has errored here. If this is a pricing error, BETTER BUY NOW before it gets corrected, LOL!

REMEMBER, most all the resellers PRICE MATCH!

Or that Pro-star doesn`t charge that horrible price premium the resellers take to change the CPU. The CPU itself isn`t near the price they take because CPU upgrade is $100 cheaper in Sager laptops compared to CPU upgrade with Asus and MSI laptops

You hear that Gentech and Xotic? Lower your prices! :D

It is not a pricing error. I checked and all Asus and MSI laptop CPU upgrades (2630QM to 2720QM) have the same price at Pro-Star

But I don`t know if Pro-Star are any reliable or trustworthy. I have never heard about them before.

Does anyone have any experience with pro-star or know how reliable they are? The option to have less ram is really nice with this new model because pretty much nothing other than autodesk type programs can even begin to use more than 8gb of ram. Add in the $30 promo code and you can build the exact same pc as the 012 model (sub 8gb ram) and save about $100.

If you can find the same laptop for less ProStar will beat it! Visit Best Gaming Computer | Best Gaming Laptop | Cheap Gaming Laptop Computers | Gaming Notebook | Pro-Star.com #gaming" .Are they trying to hint us that their price is cheaper compares to other reseller??

Alright i just configure both MSI gt780r-012us and MSI gt780r-b3 to the same spec by changing 16gb ram of 012us to 8gb and added a second hdd(same hdd model as 012us) to b3 and find out the price of b3 is cheaper in this way

Just ordered my GT780R-B3 from Prostar with an extra 500gb hard drive in raid 0, IC Diamond Thermal Compound, 6x bluray drive and the Intel Ultimate-N 6300 for $1729. The B3 is easily the best deal around right now (who needs that much ram?) Cant wait! :D

    Welcome to the club mate.
Btw I would have skipped the ic7 since it only lowered my gnu and CPU temp by 1c under load or idle. I made a post on this in this thread. The stock thermal compound does an excellempnt job. They didn't skimp out on thermal.

If you are dead set on repasting I would save the $35 and just buy 2.5gram of ic7 for $9 free shipping at amazon. (or was it 1.5 I don't remember). You can apply about 10 times or more depending on how heavily you apply them. Both the gpu and the CPU are in easy location for access. You do have to remove the warranty sticker to do this though.

In cap, don't bother with ic7 because MSI used good thermal paste (x2 I believe) but if you really want to, do it your self and save some $
