My son is middle-aged, and does quite well for himself. He may get a small bargain, but I'm NOT giving it away, LOL! Currently he has a somewhat dated Acer 8940, and we recently discussed the GT780R. He expressed an interest, so he may want to take it with him.

As to Optimus, we are hoping the kinks have been worked out. It seems to be up in the air for the moment.

    :)

The only reason I don't like Optimus is that it'll just be another thing that can break. Murphy's Law is a scary thing...

And if anyone's interested, on the linux front, I was able to install Ubuntu 11.04 Nasty Narwhal successfully. You just have to make sure you're not installing the Grub in the wrong hard drive. Be sure to choose the sector with the long name and not the default sda or you'll end up corrupting raid and or the entire boot sector (or so i believe.)

Now, I'm off to test more games...

    But wait there's more!
Things i found out that might be vaguely interesting
    1) if you're into disabling windows services like me, know that if you disable Micro Star SCM (MSIService.exe) your keyboards (colored led lights) won't work properly.
    2) Once the webcam is enabled through S-Bar, it'll stay enabled even if s-bar is turned off and after reboot.
    3) USB3.0 is definitely faster than USB2.0.
    4) Still working on getting rid of S-Bar while keeping everything functional

USB 3.0 is faster and has taken over the world. It has not only replaced ExpressCard but also IEEE 1394 (Firewire).

It seems to work for everyone except audio production people.

Sure I'll let you know more if I hear anything from the HQ Taiwan.

For the specs you got he better be happy with it, how come my father never give anything like that? :D

Optimus sometimes can be annoying, people having issues running 3Dmark since it always trying to run the Intel HD Graphics, so I guess manufactures choose not to use Optimus to avoid issues.

Yeah one major issue about Optimus is with Linux.

Hmm, are the Seagate Momentus Hybrid Drives any good? If they are, I might just get one of those instead of getting a true SSD.

Hey Ken, the only warranty available for the 780R is the extended warranty MSI offers, correct?

The GT780R warranty coverage is 2 Year Limited Warranty (includes 1 Year Global Warranty), and First Year Accidental Damage Warranty. Plus, if you register your notebook with MSI within the first 30 days, you get an additional 1 year extention to your 2 Year Limited Warranty, making it actually 3 years.

This and other helpful information can be found HERE!

    @ Ken,

My son won't get it for FREE, LOL!

The UPS tracking is behind again! Last report was "Los Angeles, CA, United States 06/28/2011 2:24 A.M. Departure Scan". Do ya reckon they decided to fly it around the world a couple times, before they deliver it? You wanna bet this thing gets delivered today, before they change the tracking info?

Question for all GT780 owners. Can you, please check is you GPU stays at 2D clocks at desktop. My GTX560M(it has the same vbios as GT780) maxes up to full speed when I am opening and maximising windows, when I am opening the browser and then goes down to 2D clocks. So, I am wondering is that drivers issue or MSI made bad vbios.

It has low clocks 51MHz/135MHz @ 0.82v while on destop and then ramps up to full clocks when loading programs. 776MHz/[email protected] but just for a second. This is with it plugged in, I haven't tried with the battery only.

I don't see what the problem is though?

Yeah they're out there but I don't really recommend it after having done them. It took me a while to somehow attach the sata connection. Sadly, they just don't slide right in. However, if you're gung ho about it, you have the option of getting one for like ~50 USD bucks or ~20 USD, both includes shipping. I opted for the cheap one obviously and i had to stretch the opening apart to fit it in, opening both the top and the bottom just to avoid disassembling the whole case. pm me if you need details.

The overclock button (P1) uses Msi's TDE to make the CPU process data faster, I don't think Afterburner messes with it since it only overclocks/handles the GPU

their web site has great tutorials to boot. They posted several step by step videos on youtube as well. I definitely agree with you there. You get what you paid for.
just don't panic if and when the caddy gets stuck midway and you can't pull it nor put it in XD same can apply to the cd tray for that matter.

Strange, I thought the P1 was strictly gpu, GPU-Z would show me two different sets of clock numbers when i had P1 on or off, that is, higher clock speeds/shader/etc. I never checked to see if it boosted cpu though.

Well, I'm assuming you didn't uninstall the preinstalled oc software thing so i'm just going to go ahead and install afterburner and see what happens. hehe

Hello everybody, I've been following this forum about a week now since I've become very interested in the gt780r and you all have been very helpful.

However, I seem to be in the same position as Storm Shark, and leaving for school on August 19th puts me in the danger zone if deciding to order a machine with the 570m and (hopefully) optimus, which would be amazing for school. Will it be possible to send in the laptop to upgrade to the 570m from the 560m in a few months or so and get the added benefits of that gpu, including optimus?

Also, I've seen a couple posts regarding battery life, can anyone confirm a +/- 5 hour battery when fully cahrged and in battery saver mode?

    Thanks :)

    greetings everyone!

About to pull the trigger on buying my GT780R!!! Ordering from PowerNotebooks as they have the best price for my configuration needs.

Getting the stock screen, CPU and RAM. Upping the second HDD to a 1TB 5200 RPM drive. It is my data drive and the faster 500GB will be for OS and programs.

This is my first non-Dell laptop. I'm on my 3.5 year old Inspiron 1720 as I type this and it's been just fine. I'm a software developer, so I've barely ever called Tech Support. But when I read about the markup with the name brands and how Asus/MSI/Sager and others were the real brains behind the machines, I had to go closer to the source.

As for the Wireless card, the GT780R is not compatible with the intel 6300 I heard because it needs 3 antennae and the laptop only has two. So I like the 6230 not for the Bluetooth (have a dongle if so required), but for the interaction with my HD TV. Has anyone used that? Any comparison between the 6230 and the Bigfoot 1102 for range, etc?

This will be my development machine primarily -- some gaming, but I couldn't resist the memory, processor, etc. for Visual Studio. I also do photo and video editing, so the GPU will be a plus.

To that end, the first thing I'm doing out of the box is repaving it. I have Windows 7 Ultimate (wish I could get the machine without the OS fees) that I will put on it. The drivers disk should have everything I to reinstall for the control panel, keyboard lights, etc, correct?

Has anyone here repaved this bad boy yet?

I'm sure I'll think of more questions. Would love to hear your comments and suggestions.

    Thanks!

GT780R is compatible with intel 6300, because when you buy it from a retailer like powernotebooks or gentech... They will take it apart and install that third antena for you. BTW the 6300 works with 2 antenas only aswell.

    "Hi Ken,

After check with our RD, the current GT/GX series doesn’t support Optimus. The discrete graphic will be on all the time.

Should you have any further question, please feel free to let me know.

yeah I was quite disappointed after they confirmed with Taiwan it won't support Optimus.

About UPS Ground shipping, it's transit by train and if it missed scan in California then you won't see any update till it reaches destination, because they won't try to stop the train just scan the packages, I see this all the time so I wasn't even worry about your package. :D

P.S. you paid for Ground shipping not early AM delivery.

Yes and no. I didn't see the keyboard lights drivers on the drivers disk so I decided to install all the drivers by downloading them from MSI's site instead of using the disk. The only thing that the disk has that the web site doesn't is a couple of benchmark software (stone giant bench and an older version of heaven unigine bench) and a webcam utility software ('Simple Camera') and the Sentellic's touchpad drivers (not necessary for it to function), and of course Norton XD. In other words, download all the drivers from the web site. The drivers disk is more or less useless you're planning on doing this on an Internet-less deserted island.

Maybe. If you look at the GT680R vs G73SW(the same CPU and GPU), the msi was better. It is possible that this will happen again. The 3GB of GDDR5 should not have a large impact on performance, because it is an overkill.

Looking at Crysis's benchmark, it achieved 62.2 FPS on high
MSI GT780R barely reached 30 FPS with the same preset. Since both systems have the same specifications, It's either my system is under performing or they got that score wrong. Anyone cares to explain?

I don't know why they're testing it on 1024X768, Shouldn't they test on the screen's native resolution, 1080p?

I guess they did it at 1024x768 to compare to low-spec laptops in their database. But that resolution is useless in this kind of notebooks.

No not possible. They have to rewire to make Optimus work. It have to go through the IGP and then to the discrete GPU to be able to shut down the GPU and use the IGP (optimus). With the GTX 560M version this routing does not excist.

Thanks for the reply but I find this email a bit weird.
All GTX for the 500 series support Optimus, 570M included. It is all over the Nvidia homepage.
See here: GeForce.com - Get the Most Out of Your GPU

Either the person you spoke to doesn`t know what he was talking about, or they do not know how to make it work on the GT780R and didn`t explain himself correct.

Could you ask again and thanks for the help. A big plus in the book for you ken :)

The GTX 560M in GT780R is factory overclocked by MSI, which means it will perform better than the G74SX ;)
If you want to know the exact clock difference check out some earlier post I made in this thread
