I never said that reading isn't easy on a 1080p screen. What I've said is that very many applications loose a lot of their usability, if the resolution is 1080p and when using a 17inch sreen. You can scale text, but you rarely can scale anything else in Windows without messing something up. Almost no program does this well, and that is why 1080p is in my opinion nonsense. Of course it depends on what you use your computer for, but I would say that the 1080p brings more disadvantages than advantages. That may change if Microsoft acts on their scaling techniques, but only time will tell...

Arrogance = when you call things "nonsense" as you offer an opinion.
Particularly when by far THE most popular and demanded resolution for gaming laptops is Full HD (1920x1080).
I think you might do better in another forum. You obviously have no place here if indeed that is your opinion. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but if that is indeed yours, you are flying in the face of reality for gaming laptops. I think you might be better served looking for a good multimedia laptop. -
They also wanted glossy displays, and look where we are now. Almost everything has a glossy display. Nice... And now a lot of people want them back, since they've realised that glossy isn't that good after all, and that it even causes health problems.
1080p is "hot" at the moment. Same thing that glossy was starting to be years ago. 1080p is forcing people to squint their eyes a lot, because a lot of programs aren't meant to be used in such a high resolution on a 17inch (or, go forbid, a 15inch) screen. People tend to go what is popular, not what might be the best opinion in the long run.
There is a 1600x900 version of this latop coming out. Why isn't it going to be on the European market, but not on the USA market? It's probably because MSI thinks it won't sell in the USA. And why is that? Could it be because it's not "hot" at the moment? Or that it would hurt their image as a "serious gamers machine"?
Think about it... -

Too funny.
I now have a new definition of arrogance.
Arrogance = JanneM
The consumer is not always right...but you can bet that JanneM is
JanneM, can you please also help us out with what foods we should eat, what movies to watch, and when to go to the bathroom?
I think that is about enough flaming...Please, just move on. -
But seriously. So many are rejoicing about the matte screen on this machine. I don't think this would've been the case 5 years earlier. Why is this?
It's because money talks.
No serious gaming notebook 5 years ago had a matte screen. It wouldn't have sold so many units. Even though it would had been better. -
Fraps only records 30 seconds...
Anyone have suggestions for a screen recorder that's free?
I still don't understand why i can't play wow at 60+ fps.
I wish I still had subscriptions to Rift, that would look nice on this machine. -

PLEASE!
Good luck with that 1600X900 screen, and your notebook subwoofer!
-
personally, i have full hd now and was using 1600x900 before. i'd say i will never go back. i really like the real estate of this resolution. anyway, is there a way to make it go to logon screen after you press the screen shutoff on S-bar?
-
I have to have a 1080p screen as my HD video editing and animation software require it. It's not just gamers who are buying these high end laptops. These machines are a must for my 3d modeling / animation, 1080p raw video editing and effects, and HD motion graphics.
Has anyone tested this laptop with Adobe After Effects and Premiere as well as 3DS Max 2012? I'm still waiting for mine. -
OK, I took the GT780R apart and applied thermal paste on for "peace of mind."
Before I repasted, the notebook was running cool GPU temp of max 76 C after two rounds of 3dmark vantage and 77C after overlocking GPU and running 3dmark vantage.
After I applied IC diamond 7 to both GPU and CPU, the temp dropped 1 degree C on CPU and GPU. Same when over locked. In conclusion, I do not recommend repasting yourself to IC diamond 7. The stock thermal paste when I opened the unit up, was properly applied and still liquidy.
On the other hand, it was quite easy to access the GPU and CPU. I believe it would be a simple matter to upgrade them in the future if notebook GPUs becomes more available. -

(I wouldn't recommend everyone do this, LOL!)
Thanks for the info!
-
I was pleasently surprised with how easy it was to get to the GPU and the CPU on GT780R. I don't recommend repasting though since the stock paste was obviously adequate enough. -
Thanks to the folks that have started to post reviews and comments about their new systems!

are the apps for stress-testing this beast free?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Sure...Furmark, Prime95 and Memtest86 are all free. Just Google for them.

Did you achieve these temperatures with the turbo fan? -

Alright, so I've been playing with this beast of a laptop for a good two days now. I am in LOVE with the speakers in this thing! I mean, yeah, they're not gonna add up to my external speakers, but the only time I use my externals is when I'm in bed. I listen to music with iTunes as I sleep, and for some reason, the screen wouldn't stay off. Haha. So I had to shut it and plug in my external speakers. The THX TrueStudio Pro software makes it sound even better that way. My only complaint with the software is that it has no equalizer. And my only complaint with the sound in general is that there's no way to adjust the volume without going into the taskbar. I was used to being able to do it on the quick access buttons on my HP dv6700 or whatever it was. This is coming from someone who demands the absolute best sound quality he can get in the music he gets. I'm somewhat of a musician and very much so a music enthousiast. I have over 5000 songs in my music collection, and that's after deleting a few thousand over the years. xDD I'm very impressed.
I've installed GTA IV, Crysis 2, Dirt 3, Just Cause 2, and Mafia 2 on the machine, but the only one I've actually played is GTA IV. I don't know much about graphics settings or anything, but I know almost all the levels were set at the highest possible, but one wasn't at high instead of very high. And the view distance was about half way up. It ran pretty smooth. The games I'm installing soon are Sims 3, Fallout 3 GotY Edition, Fallout New Vegas, Metro 2033, and Need for Speed Shift 2 Unleashed. So I'm very glad to hear that Fallout 3 will run at 60FPS on high! But I'll also be nodding the ever living hell out of it as I always do, so we'll see just how far I can pus that.I would gladly post the FPS I get with games, if I had any idea whatsoever what I was doing in the aspect. xDD
Little update on the screen. I just watched the last half of season five of Doctor Who on it. I'm pleasantly surprised. I was sure that as soon as I got it that I was going to steal the HDMI cord from my 360 and plug all my gear up to it, but honestly the only thing I've used is an external mouse. I now see no real need for my bigger screen. Until I get a 1080p screen, anyways. Playing GTA and watching Doctor Who on it was very pleasant and felt right. I now realize why people say desktop replacement. Very pleased in that regard.
I like the crisp picture of 1080p and the extra real estate it gives, but I have pretty bad eyesight, so it does get a little tedious and time consuming trying to find the right settings and sizes, but how I have it set now is pretty reasonable, and I'm not really complaining about it. It would be nice to have a bit more control over the sizes of things, though. But overall, it's still nice. Watching Blu-Ray will be AWESOME! xDD
But anyways... it's after 5 am, and my arms and eyes hurt now. Haha.
Oh, yes, someone asked about the keyboard. Typing on mine is overall very pleasant. I haven't really experienced any flex, even by the arrow keys. The movements are very fluid and the keys feel awesome to press. Some people complain about the produced noise, but I actually enjoy being able to hear my strokes and the sound of typing. It's not loud and annoying, but it's audible and oddly relaxing to me. But they feel awesome! Haha.
If anyone has requests or questions that don't involve me taking the thing apart, just ask! Just be warned that I'm not very experienced when it comes to high-end PC gaming, so it might take some time and/or coaching. -
@kevin thanks for the review , could you please provide some benchmarks with 3dmakr or any other software? , and what about crysis 2 fps , try running it on max grafix and please share your results with us, Thanks!

For those interested, MSI has released an EC (embedded controller) firmware update. The download, info, and flash instructions can be found HERE!
I have also added this to the lead post, and it can be found in the 'Official MSI GT780 Downloads' section, as the 'Firmware' link.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
That has a May 3rd release date, and there is only one there. Are you sure it is an update?
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
What I can tell you, is this download was NOT previously available, and only recently posted.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
It also says: Description First release.
The fact that it wasn't there before just means they hadn't posted it previously. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Since this update just posted, I assume folks doing fresh WIN 7 installs will need to be aware of this, right?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
No, there is no need to load either the BIOS or EC when doing a fresh OS install. They are already loaded. You would only need to update them with a bootable flash drive should they ever be updated.

For 3DMark, I will try to figure out how to work this contraption. xDD I'm taking a bit of a break from my computer for right now, so I can let it run. As for the Crysis 2 FPS thing... 1) I have no idea how to measure FPS in a game. B) Someone else already tested this and said that the FPS is so low that's it's unplayable.

I will try it soon then! I'm working on getting 3DMark Vantage now!
-
I ended up "upgrading" both the BIOS and the firmware purely out of idiocy. But, at least know that it won't kill you or your computer.
Man, I'm so glad other people are testing games too finally. Please share all your experiences.
[Question from me]
1) How do I enable CinemaPro without it launching windows media player?
[Trivia from me]
1) With the S-Bar DISABLED, following buttons will still WORK from the touch bar above the keyboard. (Relative location in order from left in parentheses)- (3rd) Turbo Fan button
- (4th) Backlit keyboard button
- (5th) Wifi button
- (6th) Bluetooth button
- (1st) MSI Graphics OC button ((aka the P1 button))
- (8th) Disk drive eject button (only tested on an external disk drive, plz confirm if same is the case with the stock internal disk drive)
- (2nd) CinemaPro button
- (7th) EmergencyPornDisable button
Hope that helps. Please let me know if the case is different on your GT780R. -
I could not understand MSI tying the eject bottom to the S-bar...Now when I want to eject a CD or DVD I have to go drive E...Sucks...
Still researching a way to shoot the star and still get the juice...lol -

Possible solutions to disk drive button annoyance thus far:
1) Keep S-Bar enabled at all times
2) Replace face plate with the generic flat one as all oem disk drives such as this one come with the button, in GT780R the faceplate just covers it up (this will not look as pretty since the stock faceplate is rather thick and the generic ones are flat) <<see pic>> however this requires you to pull out the disk drive
3) (this is what i did in anticipation) replace disk drive with hard drive
4) (a radical option) bore a hole or cut a U shape into the stock faceplate <<not recommended>> <<may require Ken's tools of trade>>
5) wait to see if msi will sell a buttoned faceplate as an option -

Also, on the Swift model backpack, I was concern more room may be needed...... that it might not be a good fit for the GT780R. Please let us know if it's a snug fit, if you get zipper contact, and if there is enough room for plenty of extra goodies.
Thanks!
