Well guys. I've had my computer for about an hour or more. My keyboard doesn't seem to be messed up. The AltGr, Windows, and Ctrl keys are brighter than others. The mid-right section of mine works fine, it just seems not as bright. But I think I realized that that's because the keys are big letters, they're punctuation, thus there's not as much of the light getting through. That's my theory, at least. I haven't really done much typing on it yet. I'm not sure why, but Ibadan to reinstall the audio driver for music to work. It took me a bit to figure out how to get to TrueStudio Pro and the keyboard utility, but I got that all worked out. I need to go through and uninstall some more bloatware. Got my settings changed, and anti-virus installed. Those who were wondering about the subwoofer, if you have it up high, you can feel the bass. I like it. I've sat it down in order to pack it up and go to my dad's, where I'll be installing my games and whatnot.

But I got Lara Croft! I wanted Mafia II and especially Just Cause 2. D: Anyone wanna trade? :D

Ordered on 15th stock, shipped via ground UPS on 16th, arrived on 23rd.
I am absolutely impressed with this laptop so far. I have Asus G72GX and G50VX and was going to get asus G74SX when I stumbled on this forum. After reading Ken's replies and fellow forumers, I decided to order from GentechPC and spoke to Ken on the phone.

    On to the GT780R
The screen at first wasn't impressive to me, but the more I use the laptop it is clear to me that it puts much less strain on my eyes after long uses. I used it in broad daylight and in a dark room with bright lights and the only part that reflects light is the black plastic rim around the screen. My gf thought I was justifying myself in buying another man toy until she saw the screen at work and she's wowed. The colors are very clear, but you don't get the artificial glossy shine.

The keyboard is solidely built and I love the promt response time and firm presses. My asus keyboard misses a few key strokes in between due to driver issues that I never got around fixing. This keyboard is solid. Period. The lights are all properly lit up. Yes, OP90-[;' keys are slightly dimmer than the rest of the keyboard, but if you look from the bottom, they are equally lighted. The position of "Delete" key is a bit awkward, however, coming from asus keyboard where "Delete" key is above the Backspace key. I absolutely love how the "window crap key" is located on the right side. I had it disabled on my asus through regedit.

    Continued on next post

The sound is equally impressive and I can unhook the JBL speaker from the laptop now. I am not a heavy bass fan because I am conscious of hearing loss associated with long term exposure to loud base. No, I will not test out the bass for you. I do wish the speaker grill was all black instead of silver though. Would have made the laptop look more luxerious.

The webcam, I am still testing out. I installed the free multi cam, but have no idea how to set resolutions much less make it full screen. I will update it more as the program grows on me.

The screen wobbles slightly if I start typing furiously. Doesn't move at all when I am gaming though. I was a bit surprised at this because the hinge felt very solid when I opened the laptop up. It does not wobble any more than my Asus G72GX though.

I passed my MSI GT780R through multiple pass under 3dmark vantage and got around 9760 GPU 42378 CPU at 1600 X 1024 resolution. GPU max temperature was at 76 C and CPU max at 56C. THRM max 83.0C I don't know that THRM is though. This is with stock thermal paste. I plan on applying diamond IC7 in the near future after I've confirmed that nothing is amiss.

The trackpad was highly responsive and I like the two separate buttoms for right and left clicks. The location of trackpad on/off makes much more sense on this laptop. There is no scroll bars, however, since this is not symentic trackpad. There is only scroll up, down, left, right area. Doesn't botter me one bit. :)

The included bloatwares were simple enough to uninstall. The S-Bar places this black star on top middle of your screen. I have mixed feelings about this black star, and cannot comment for or against it. The laptop comes with a heaven benchmark program, lara croft game, and starcraft trial. Heaven benchmark program had some slow downs, so I ran it again in DX10 instead of DX11. This improved the speed tremendously. I guess even GTX 560M isn't up to handle DX11. I ran benchmarks again after installing Nvidia 275.50 beta. The Phyx and 3dvision did not install, but all else installed without a problem. The new benchmarks were pretty much identical to the ones before the driver updates.

Games tested: Dragon Age II on 1920 X 1080, all settings as high as they go except Anti aliasing at 4X. Did not look at frame rates, but the game played beautifully. No hiccups.

Duke Nukem forever on 1920 X 1080, all setting as high as they go. No hiccups, no slow downs, controls were highly responsive.

To be tested: Rift - as soon as I finish downloading the 9.2 gig patch on my 120k dsl craption, I will update here.

One quarky issue that I do have is with Steelseries Xai mouse and booting lag. It has internal memory for mouse settings and this I believe is messing with the bios. The boot up hangs at MSI booting screen for about 90 sec, then boots up fine. When I remove the mouse, it boots normally.

Fan noise is a quite hum in the background under light use and can definitely be heard when under heavy load. During gaming, the game sounds cover up the fan noise completely, however, even with game volume set low.

    Additional findings:
Zero dead pixels on the screen upon arrival.
I have watched blueray movies by using gom player and the quality is simply wow. I'm very glad that I upgraded to 1920 X 1080.
The key board and palm area stays quite cool with 30 mins of continous typing on them.

P.S. all typos are due to my poor typing and English :D

Started having a few issues with the touchpad like someone else mentioned in this thread earlier. The pointer started jumping around the screen and would change directions when scrolling sometimes. Tried reinstalling the driver to no avail. For whatever reason, reseating the battery fixed it for now.... Which is good, cause I didn't want to have to open it and check out ribbons because of that stupid warranty sticker

Now that I've gotten everything up and running time to write a little review.

First off I'll start with the keyboard since that seems to be the biggest concern right now. Personally I am in love with it, typing on it just feels great, no keys are missed while I type but I am not the fastest at typing. Another thing I like about it is it's pretty quiet while typing, unlike other keyboards I've typed on that make a lot of nice while typing. The back light on it works great too, the O,P,L area is a little dimmer but it is barely noticeable, I only saw it because I was looking for it. My only real complaint is the amount of flex in the keyboard down by the arrow keys, which is a lot compared to the rest of the area.

The screen is amazing as well I love the matte finish, I've been on it all day in a well lit room and haven't had to worry about glare at all unlike my last laptop that had a glossy finish. The color looks great too I haven't really noticed a big drop in color.

I'm not a huge trackpad user my mouse had been plugged in since I got it up and running but it seems solid overall

The laptop was a lot lighter then I expected it would be but a lot bulkier, not bad though. The lid opens well easily to open with once hand and feels solid the stickers were a pain to get off too. :D The disc drive opens well but wobbles a bit, not sure if that is normal, it was upgraded to a BD drive.

Speakers have been great too, they sound really nice, but my favorite part is how loud they get, I haven't used the much either though so not a lot to report.

I'm still downloading games so haven't tested anything yet Witcher 2 should be done soon though.

The only really concerns I had were when I unboxed it. The keyboard and the BD drive cover were not on all the way, the first time I hit the eject button it popped open with the cover barely hanging on, both of these just required me to push them back on. Since the Blu ray drive, was upgraded and the I believe the keyboard must be removed to upgrade my wireless card and GenTechPC was the last to touch these I think their tools are faulty, I've circled the tool I believe needs to be replaced.

But seriously thanks Ken for getting it to me so quick you are the best!

how's the palm area when gaming for long hours? on my hp dv5, it gets hot to the point that i will remove my hand for a bit to cool it off. And also, i am planning to upgrade to SSD but afraid to break the warranty. anyone of you has done it already? Looking at my local retailer right now and constantly refreshing their site to see their stock level. right now they are down to 2. damn, i dont have a credit card so i can't order online like the others. i hope tomorrow when i get to the store there is still one left for me. lol

I gave Duke Nukem Forever a run for several hours, and heat didn't even come to mind. Also, you may find Ken's stress testing assuring. After hours of both Prime & Furmark, the temps were very good. You can find these results in post #1.

    Good luck in your purchase!

The palm rest stays surprisingly cool. I have been playing Dungeon Siege III for a few hours and the only heat on the rest is from my wrist. There's really no heat coming from the laptop itself aside from the vent.

Well well well.... It's time to chime in on my thoughts so far. Kinda sad no one wants to trade my Lara Croft. xDD I got enough of Tomb Raider when I was six. I apologize if there a load of typos. It takes me a while to get used to new keyboards and such. And I type kinda fast, but not too fast.

So first off, the keyboard. Man, I love this thing a ton! Mine had no faults. All the keys seem to be working fine, as I'm typing this on it. :D As with what every one else is saying, the right middle of the keyboard where the ';p type keys are is dm, and the AltGr, Windows, ad Ctrl keys are bright, but I believe this was on purpose. So, I take it back, my R key is a bit hard to press, but I think it's my fingers, not the keyboard. Haha.

Let's see.... Speakers and sound? Right. Well, when I first got the laptop, my music wasn't working, but the system sounds and stuff were. So I reinstalled the driver, restarted the computer, and it worked like a charm. A very loud charm. The sound is as clear as it is in most external speakers, and very loud. The subwoofer is deep and loud as well. Everything sounds pretty much flawless. Or as flawless as it can be on a laptop.

Touchpad wise, I don't really use it a lot now that I have the machine in a stable place. When I was using it earlier, it worked good. Wasn't jumpy, the scroll surprised me, and the click buttons were nice and responsive. The only thing I didn't like a lot was the texture of the pad. But that's okay. Oh, and when I first started using my USB mouse, at one point, the cursor started jumping everywhere! Then I soon realized that my phone had slid over on the touchpad. Hehe. So I turned it off with the nifty little button.

I have not got to use it with any games yet, as I'm trying to transfer them to use them, but I ran the benchmark, and the graphics blew me away. I had everything as high as it'd go just for kick, and it didn't even skip that much. I turned down one or two things, and boom. Beautiful, and no skips!

I upgraded to an SSD, and to everyone who can affod it, I highly recommend it. It's unbelievable. I'd never used one before, and it'll be hard to go back.

Screen-wise? I've never used a matte screen on a laptop before, but my external monitor are all matte, so I was rather used to that, but the 1080p, and the screen it's self is stunning. I had to turn the brightness down. Haha. I really like it.

Bloatware wasn't all too bad, but I thik Ken might've already went through that part when he did my upgrades. aha. But what was on it I uninstalled without much of a hitch.

The build quality eems very solid and well put together, which I'm happy about. Some of my quick access keys are reversed. Haha. Like the fan and the cinematic mode. Kinda think Ken did it to mess with me! Haha. But it's no big deal. Everything works awesome!

Now about those game downloads... xDDD

Received my MSI GT780R today ;) Actually arrived earlier but it's posted to my local post office yesterday so today I picked it up!

The build quality for me is awesome especially the keyboard, doesn't have any problem. It's actually nice typing on it. No comment about the sound quality though, as we all know, it's by DynAudio. :)

Overall, it's a good laptop that I would recommend to anyone who's doing light gaming but still wants to maintain the "gaming" look.

Thanks Ken for the service. Received the laptop in good condition. No dead pixel etc. Everything's working fine! Now, next week will be the NP8170 :D

seriously your "neighbor" do have options to get full refund from NewEgg and shop for different brand.

clearly MSI is not for your "neighbor"[/U, on my tests I haven't seen any unit with brightness not working, it's LED screen and it doesn't use inverter board so it must be some software issue cause it.

you can also try adjust the brightness from Windows power plan settings to see if screen brightness actually work.

Also you didn't mention the brightness doesn't work out of the box or it stopped working after some personalize settings to the laptop.

I am pretty sure the unit you returned to NewEgg is now at MSI since they are just about 500 ft away, I'll ask MSI to let me borrow the unit you returned to NewEgg so I can test it to see if there is any serious issues on the particular unit you returned to NewEgg.

Yeah, 'Simple Camera' is just too darn simple, LOL! No drivers needed, as the webcam uses native WIN 7 drivers. All you need do is use a third party webcam app, that supports HD webcams...... like YouCam 4, Arcsoft Webcam Companion 4, the latest version of Skype, etc.

EDIT: AND what Ken says below too! :D

Just discovered that I can't change the brightness settings...

It was working a couple of days back..

    :::Update:::
Updated the graphics driver to 278.50 and brightness control is back.
Looks like 278.33 removed that functionality even with the mod file.

NewEgg's policy on this laptop is for the replacement only. No refunds. We had to escalate the issue to mgmt to receive an advance replacement.

Ken, do you provide advance replacement or refund for your customers on this laptop?

I didn't check the brightness when I was initially setting up the laptop. Only combing through and double checking everything last night I found this. It turns out its an Nvidia driver issue, so it's resolved. So far the issues are, the keyboard typing on certain models, Keyboard LED uneven, or downright turned off on parts of the keyboard, and his i-Charger doesn't work (enabled in Bios).

Also, what do you mean this laptop isn't for my "neighbor"? And also why are you quoting the word "neighbor" Are you being sarcastic? Because he has an issue with a keyboard that's half lit, and few buttons that so bright for him to a level where he is distracted by it? Or are you implying because of his reluctance of going through the RMA process twice in a row on a brand new laptop?

If that's the case, then you're right. I am absolutely glad I didn't buy this. I realize these negative feedbacks are raining on everyone's parade here, and from a vendor's perspective that it may dampen sales, but consumers have the right to know, and that's what forums are for. Just because you haven't seen it, or a lot of people on this thread isn't seeing the issue, doesn't mean the issue doesn't exist, nor anyone should downplay the issue. Clearly there is an issue, and many have confirmed it (I've seen it twice in row).

I first came here in October 2008 to look around for new laptop. After reviewing my issues on various laptops, I was able to pick a great laptop that worked for me.

I am sure there are many people in a similar situation using this forum to understand the positives and negatives on each models. This isn't a design issue, it is an issue of defective parts (batch of bad keyboards). I can understand some fan boys here who will defend their brand they chose till death, but I would ask you Ken to consider that as a 'reputable' vendor, that you do not downplay these issues, rather to help your customers to resolve the issue. I am absolutely surprised by your remarks.

Don't get me wrong, I think this is one of the best laptops I've seen so far. I haven't used it too much since I was only helping to set it up. But the keyboard on affected models are let me quote "absolute crap"

When I installed the 275.50 beta, it installed everything except the phyx and 3dvision drivers. All working fine including brightness adjustment. No noticeable FPS improvement over the manufacurer's included driver though

I torrent'd YouCam and it definitely seems like 30 FPS but I don't know how to tell for sure. Anyway, the laptop is absolutely great! I've watched the entire 'LIFE' series on blu-ray and loved the picture quality. There's no real worry about overheating either because they did a great job with the design. When I have my laptop in my 'station', I leave the external cooler on medium and the system stays super cool. When I take it off to use it on my bed or something, I just hit the turbo fan and the temps stay SUPER low. I've been watching the blu-rays in bed and I probably don't even need to hit the turbo fan but I've done it just for peace of mind - damn, that thing has power!

I'm going to school in Italy for the next 2 years (coming home for Christmas & summer) so I was planning on buying cheap speakers to attach to this but I've changed my mind. The stock system is great! I even watched 'LIFE' without headphones. My lower 'Alt Gr' and 'Ctrl' keys are illuminated more than others but I'm not a nitpicker. My favorite color scheme is the Italian flag - green, white, red! hahaha. Flag schemes are sure to be fun with this system. The keyboard feels great to type on the system actually lasts pretty long on the battery when you use the proper settings (about 4 hours of basic office + web browsing). All in all, I'm a very happy owner!

WOW! There you go AGAIN ' asong'! Obviously you are entirely clueless to the problem here....... and apparently you delight in mixing words.

EVERYONE knows some units are have issues, and no one is denying this! Yet you seem overly determined to exaggerate the conditions, all from a platform of advocating for your "neighbor'.

Also, no one really objects to negative feedback. As a matter of fact, it an be very helpful when presented properly...... but everyone objects to rain-makers, who beat their drum, intent on spoiling the parade for everyone. I can not speak for Ken, but as to 'vendor perspective' and 'dampening sales', I would not blame him (or any other reseller for that matter) for being a little more than upset with you right now.

Also you will not win any friends or awards, demeaning folks with labels such as 'fanboy'. There are no 'fanboys' here, for many this is their first MSI experience (myself included), and many have owned a variety of brands, with loyalty to none.

Perhaps for a moment, step back and review your situation. Take into account and consider your experience with the GT780R. You have experienced issues with TWO of your neighbor's notebooks, which has caused you embarassment due to your recommendation. Some of the issues have been due to defect (keyboard), and some were not (screen). Also, you have read a limited number of reports of other users experiencing similar keyboard issue.

Now I ask you..... Is it helpful to you, or your neighbor's situation, to campaign a vendetta of words against MSI or Steelseries? Is it helpful to complain of RMA inconvenience, or seller policies? Why not just get on with it, and seek a satisfactory unit? Can you consider, that the issues have been minimal, as compared to units shipped and global sales? Is a negatively guided thinking, helpful to you, the community, or seeking resolution? Are you getting a GT780R, another notebook perhaps, or do you just want to continue bantering the negative aspects of this notebook? AND FINALLY, when you challenge Ken's reputation with your inference of; "as a 'reputable' vendor, that you do not downplay these issues, rather to help your customers to resolve the issue", I have to ask, JUST WHO IN THE HECK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?

FEW HERE HAVE DONE MORE THAN KEN OR OTHER RESELLERS, AIDING CUSTOMERS IN RESOLVING THEIR ISSUES !!!

Anyhow asong, I really don't expect any answers to the questions, nor is any needed...... just food for thought. I am done with this! Hopefully we can move on!

    :)

    Dude,

Trust me, I am not here to win friends, nor "rep power", just trying to save people some trouble and warn them properly when warrented.

BTW: I am moving on. See you in say 3 years when I am back in the market for next replacement (I have my eyes set on this laptop once another revision is released). I am sure you'll still be here when I get back with your rep power and pompoms. Hilarious!

Word of advice, get job with MSI, at least you'll get paid for what you're doing. And another advice, move out of your mother's basement.

I haven't attacked Ken, nor anyone here. You chose to downplay the concerns and attack me, and tried to implied that I may have been lying about my neighbor because I didn't have enough rep power? Accuse me of being banned? Dude, you started this not me. And Ken, somehow joined in. All I have to do is walk away with nothing to lose, nor friends to lose. It's obvious you do though because this is where you live. Remember, I don't sell laptops for living, nor do stay and live here every day being a cheerleader like 'YOU'.

I've done great service of exposing the issues. Knowing I've saved many people from agony of dealing with the QA issues, I am satisfied.

You're too easy... I just left you a rope, and you go and hang yourself. Re-Read the words you're saying. You're a Fanboy / Cheerleader. Wow, you really want everyone to buy this laptop don't you? Or somehow feel so passionate about what you bought that you must defend it til death! LMFAO!!

Take care, and enjoy your laptop, you're one of the few that received a what you've actually paid for. You're awesome dude! I am sure MSI loves you. You deserve it.

    Cheers!

    :)

Edit: Wow, I just noticed with this post, my rep power shot up to 7. Is that good? :) See you in 3 years fanboy. Somehow I know you'll be here when I get back. LOL!

Keyboard is great no problem with stuck keys, a little dimness on the O9-+{}:"L, but it is not big problem. I love the keyboard anyway.

    The display is awesome...

Brightness I change to 75% but it always reset back to a 100%, when I restart the computer.

The screen froze a couple time, I had to force a shut down...

Some times when I am watching videos online the display flashes and I get a message saying that the display stopped working but recovered...This is annoying...I already uninstalled the the gtx 560m twice and reinstalled...

Overall I am in love with my MSI GT780R-012US...

I wish this owner site had less rant and more seriousness about problems and solution...

PS I never met a nvidia card that did not have a few bugs...lmao

Yay, He's gone and we can get back to enjoying our laptops, oh wait... I never stopped enjoying it. :D

Been playing Witcher 2 on high 1920x1080 all day and it's been running great, not noticing any heat or fan noise over the games sound, which sound amazing btw. Really fun game recommend it to anyone into those types of games.

Sorry I didn't post update on the 275.50 beta "verde," to be precise. I finally resolved all the issues. Since we all have nvidia issues now and then as mentioned, I will share my secret. After repeatedly installing and uninstalling and cleaning, sweeping, etc the nvidia driver along with any related drivers i just reinstalled windows... and installed ALL drivers back one at a time... Unfortunately i could only come up with the caveman method as I only had few stuff to recover.

But, now i don't get freezes and 275.50 verde beta works perfectly with the ability to change brightness.

My guess is that this particular issue rose form having installed an older version of DirectX then windows update piling mud on top of it. Not to mention many layers of different nvidia driver versions.

    Secondly, about WoW and GT780R:
Anyone else tried this? I set everything to MAX, i mean everything. I'm getting less than 30 fps flying around Uldum in both directx9 and 11.
Please share your experiences. Much thanks in advance.

    Other games so far:
GTA IV - (at MAX settings getting ~20fps, not really playable but looks nice)

    {{I will only post fps at the maximum possible settings (including AA and AF maxed) of games.}}

Hi gatta, I do not have this specific laptop, however,
normally this could be set in the power management settings of laptop, for the various modes (battery saving, balanced, high performance etc.), i.e. you can set the default brightness for battery saving mode, or balanced mode etc... so wehn you restart, the brightness will remain at that setting...

this sounds exactly like a driver issue and should hopefully be resolved in a later Nvidia driver update... It might also be worth to try the driver sweeper software from guru3d while reinstalling the driver...

btw cool avatar! :D, which one is it? :)

Laptop is set on high performance, rarely use the battery on the laptop...

Use driver sweep to clean up nvidia drivers before installing...

Already downloaded the new nvidia beta verde, I will install next week...

    Thanks anyway...

I'm overly impressed with windows 7. I'm hoping it's cause I was finally able to leave the deathly grasp of Vista.

I did a fresh install. I actually don't recommend bothering with it because the amount of bloatware is quite minimal and they rub off nicely, mostly. Like i mentioned in my previous post, Norton was the hardest to get rid of.

Are you planning on doing it fresh too?

By the way I just downloaded and installed nVidia Verde 275.50 Driver, took a couple times of uninstalling and reinstalling and sweeping for drivers, but it is finally in...

Seems fine, I will keep testing, and if there are any problems, I will keep the site posted...

I am keeping my fingers crossed, hope there are no problems...lol
