I don't think the wireless card is that bad. I agree with the touchpad though. The touchpad is far inferior compared to the 2011 macbook Air that I used to have. That's why my next laptop will have either a really good touchpad or the pointing stick and buttons.

Yes. This BIOS is addressed to all y510p/y410p.

    It includes minor fixes:

    Updated Information:
Latest Version BIOS fixed correct repetitive entry in SETUP "Boot" after OS recovery.

Well, have to say I'm disappointed with the M.2 SSD. It just crapped out on me, rendering Windows useless. I cant even reinstall due to an i/o error. And I thought the m.2 would be as reliable as an ssd, but i was wrong. Now i have to return the thing for a refund. I no longer trust the m.2 thing to just have it replaced, unless someone can convince me. I'll have to see what kind of warranty/refund MyDigitalSSD has with it.

    Anyone else have similar issues?

SSDs (MLC=Multi Level Cell) are vulnerable to:
    -temperatures above 70 °C
-power outages may cause data corruption
-frequent writes/reads like defragmentation, p2p usage.

The bigger SSD the longer it should last.

    MyDigitalSSD has 3 years warranty.

MyDigitallSSD (in theory) offers some above average data protection features:
I 've read plenty of comments on newegg about ADATA ngff m.2 2242 ssd failing, nothing unusal.

MyDigitallSSD failed in your case? Which model was that? What capacity?

I am going for 256 GB capacity. This week should be available from ADATA (ASP900NS38-256GM-C) and MyDigitaSSD. (MDM242-SB-256)

It was their 128GB Super Cache 2. I've switched back to using just the HDD, and no issues so far, so it's definitely the SSD.
Warranty is all fine and good, but this is the first SSD that I've ever had issues with, which leaves me to believe that M.2 still has some teething problems.

I am quoting my own question because I recently switched from Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 7 and now getting full speed from my USB 3.0 ports. The only drivers I used are the ones from the Lenovo website. The same USB flash drive I got 40MB/s speeds on Windows 8 gets 81MB/s speeds on Windows 7. The Windows 8 slow usb speeds are certainly a driver issue which is a bit sad since the system came preinstalled with Windows 8.

Rumor has it that Y510P supports only 1600Mhz (and bacwards compatible 1333)

I had only 8GB (2x4GB) in my unit so I went for 16GB upgrade.

I thought that I'll get 2133 memory so it will be downclocked to 1600 with CAS latency 9 or even 8.

    Ordered HyperX Impact SO-DIMM DDR3L(1.35V) 2133MHz 2x8GB

To my deepest surprise CAS latency is not so low. It looks a bit different.

    1065MHz in Dual = 2133MHz @CAS11

SYSTEM WAS PERMANENTLY UNSTABLE, HAD TO SEND RAM BACK TO VENDOR
CONCLUSION 2133MHz DDR3L RAM is a BAD Idea

Could you share which premium RAM kit is working in your case?

Hi everyone! Im looking for a 170w ac adapter for my Y510P SLI but unfortunately local lenovo stores here in my place doesnt seem to know there exists such thing. They always insist that there's only 120w for y510p and it will make SLI work. They even say the ones they sell comes with 120w (SLI). So I had no choice to just look online. Can you verify that this 170w ac is geniune? Thanks!

My SLI model came with 170W 20V, brick size adapter. And AFAIK 170W one is for 755SLI.

Maybe someone have power meter and can determine power consumption of Y510p755MSLI at maximum peak.

However 170W adapter is a safer route.

May I ask a photo of a 170w ac adapter from those who have it shipped together with their SLI? I am ordering online and want to make sure I get the right one. Thanks!

    Hi everyone!
    I think about getting a Y510P (I7 4700MQ, 16GB RAM, Full HD, GT 755M SLI, 1TB HDD + SSD, Win 8.1) for about 915€.
I haven´t read all 300 pages of this thread, sorry for this, but I have a couple of questions/concerns about this laptop.
    1) Does the SLI Version suffer from micro stuttering? What is your experience? I´d like to use this laptop as a gaming machine, but its not necessary to play every game at ultra settings!
This is the most important point for me! Is micro stuttering an issue? Did the situation already improve (because of better/newer nvidia drivers) ? (especially in racing games micro stuttering used to be very bad, from what i have seen so far)
    2) Temperatures - What are the temperatures while Gaming? Is there throttling? How warm does the laptop get (and how loud)?
    3) What about the battery life on the Y510P? Does it improve if you eject the 2nd GPU? How much battery life do you squeeze out of your machines?
    4) Your experience with the Y510P (current games like BF4, Watch Dogs, Titanfall, Wolfenstein, Guild Wars 2)
    5) Tweaking programs (can you overclock, undervolt the CPU/ GPU by using certain tools)?
    6) Can i install Windows 7 on the machine (if I installed Win7, would I get drivers for the laptop?) ?

Thank you very much in advance for answering my questions.
I have already read this review ( Review Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews ) but your opinion would really help me alot!
Greeting from Germany and enjoy your sundays :)

@1 YES,for some its unbareable, for some its barely noticable, also depends on game title.
@2 High Temp. quiet. Cooling a bit insufficient. Its getting hot. People use: Laptop coolers, lower case mods, undervolting.
@3 Yes better battery life is bette due to Optimus tech.
    @4 BF4 Ultra, WD MED, GW2 ULTRA
@5 UV yes, OC NO(there is potential, just no cooling for it)
@6 Yes, Windows 7 is officially supported. just back up windows 8 serial with ProduKey
Get Y50 with GTX850M 4GB.- same gaming performance, better cooling, no stuttering, Optimus. subwoofer, a bit worse screen, no m.2 for ssd.

    @Thanks for your fast answer.
They designed REP system for it so anyone can press star and increase others person reputation.
@So you would not recommend the y510p, would you?
    Quite contrary.
Just you have to know y510p have some issues.
CPU should usually be with disabled turbo if i7 because of sky high temperatures. Aslo you need to undervolt it by 75mV or more.(Intel XTU or Throttle Stop)
There is always stuttering in games. From barely noticable to annoying.
GPUs while playing demanding games aere also very hot. undervolitng with nvidiainspector.
Depending on which version you buy you may have SSHD or HDD+m.2 SSD.
SSD m.2 slot is definately nice thing!
also if you are bored with gaming you may buy ultrabay SSD/HDD caddy. And put one graphics card on the shelf.
Screen is bright and offers great quality.
Screens frame is glossy and there is a joke that Front Bezel may even scratch by looking at it.
Connectivity without bios mod is limited to 2.4GHz 802.11n.
    This laptop is not portable.
If you will be unlucky you would have to repaste ultrabay gpu.

Buy it with decent laptop cooler like Notepal U3+.

I knew all of it (read whole thread) and I bought y510p

    Hey guys,

Been a while for me to drop by here since my home forum is another site, but I come by here every so often since I primarily use a laptop as well...

I have ordered a couple replacement heatsinks and will be performing a modification to both heatsinks shortly. I will be posting pictures on another forum but I can share them too if you guys are interested...

Essentially ill just be adding more heatpipes to the cooling solution, the only trick for me to figure out is how to properly mold the heatpipe to the fins that dissipate the heat. My warranty is already void so I dont really have any qualms of digging into the laptop. I will also be modifying the heatsink of the ultrabay GPU. BEcause it short, that one tiny pipe is just pathetic lol. With the recent update to the BIOS mod for 3.05 I have been able to push the GPU's pretty hard but run into the thermal limit and breaks the overclock after I hit 97C. 1.2 volts is just too much for the built in cooling solution.

I have modded laptops before in the past and not really uncomfortable with it, however trying to do something a little more elegant as opposed to just stacking some copper

And what do you mean when you say greater capabilities? And can you point me to a guide to mod my firmware (is it gpu?) thanks!

@TheReciever Keep us posted. I'm about to re-paste my Y410P SLI because the temperatures I see are a bit too high. Undervolting + multiplier limiting are the only things keeping it under 90C.

That would be neat if you found a way to increase heat dissipation by modifying the heat sink.

    Hi everyone,

I've been searching for a solution to my issue with absolutely no success. My y510p battery drains approximately 20% each night when not connected to AC power. I don't use the laptop very much, so by the time I turn it on at the end of the week, the battery is pretty much dead. I've tried pretty much everything in threads posted at the Lenovo forums with no success. Disabled USB charge, WoWLAN on the WiFi (N-2230), turned off fast boot, etc. I've clean installed Windows 8, tried Windows 7 and even Ubuntu 14.04 and it simply didn't matter what I had installed, the drain was still there.

I pulled the battery one night and left it. It only lost about 2% outside of the laptop overnight.

Does anyone else have any suggestions? I've read that some people have sent it in for repair to replace the motherboard and battery with no success, but I feel like I'm running out of options here. Thanks in advance.

Un-freakin'-believable. I updated the BIOS to 3.05 then proceeded to throw in my new SSD (reseated device in drive bay) and decided to reseat the RAM after dusting it out a bit.

99% after being left off overnight. Not totally sure what it was, inclined to believe it to be the BIOS since the version I had was 1.10. Kinda disappointing that it only just made it to the website last month.

I've been using HWInfo to keep track of temperatures and I believe my computer is getting hotter and hotter over time. Is there any way of telling whether the several degrees in difference is just from winter/spring temperatures vs. a hot humid summer? Also, is there another program I should be using other than HWInfo for keeping track of temperatures.

Temperatures about a month ago were good (it hasn't gotten hot here until recently) but now they are getting rather high. I was rendering a video a couple of hours ago and cpu temps were in the 90s and ultrabay was edging close to 100 degrees.

    Any help is appreciated.

What is it with lenovo over the Y500/Y510P ultra-bays if they dont want to sell them whats the point of designing and selling something that cant be fully used as it was designed to do, any of the guys been able to source 3rd party optical drives as the only thing that seems to be available is HDD Caddies?

This is close to miss-selling of the products.

Yeah, Lenovo totally messed up the ultrabay's on the Y500/Y510p's. I was lucky that I bought the dual SLI version, but if you didn't get the SLI, it might be hard to find that module now. (EDIT: It looks like you can get the 750m module right now from Lenovo US: Y500 Removable Graphics GT750M5 | 0C65964 | Lenovo | US).

I got the ultrabay DVD drive from Lenovo Canada when they were still available (you can still get it from Lenovo US right now: Y500 Removable DVD Burner DB36 | 0C22231 | Lenovo | US).

I got the harddrive caddy that has the plastic piece to make it look more integrated ( 2nd HDD SSD Hard Drive Caddy for Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 Y500N Y510P | eBay).

I am still trying to configure out whether to get a 9.5inch bluray drive to swap out the dvd in the dvd ultrabay that I got...

    Thanks for that information m8!

NEXT QUESTION TO ALL Y510P OWNERS?

Our Y510P is crazy sharp on the upper cases front leading edge so much so even this 52 yearold's hands are screaming out in pain even after a few minutes of work and called Lenovo who stated its was a KNOWN design Fault and issued us with a RMA to return to vendor for replacement or refund!

Question; Do all Y510P variants have very sharp edges around the front of their palm rests or is it just a case of pot luck?

We hate the trackpad (how hard is it to get something so basic right in the design stage) the edges can be filed down gently but in a 1300 bucks laptop thats really making a fool of their loyay customers in their cheap models this is not an issue at all including useable trackpads!

We love the silent fans and low heat even when pushed on 3 yearold games with SLI just tested the Y50 yesterday which is utter crap next to this model other than sharp edges are gone but 1080p screen is terrible next to this 510p version.

CPU-Z states the i7 4700 has never ever went over 800mhz core speed which is shocking to us in such a gaming rig and reviewers has repoted it going to 3.4 single core well if thats so all have came directly from the factory with a diferent bios settings?

Our old chronos 7 was a joy for daily use but not a serious gaming rig wish we kept it now although it had the same sharp edge problem except just not as bad as this model as its sticking up 1.3mm above flush besides and below the trackpad area its flush on the ride side and a litle bit sharp on the left but not uniform all the way round like on the G580 for example?

Any owners found a fix for this as I may change for a ASUS G56 instead which is a last resort move.

I personally haven't had any problems with the edges, though they are sharp compared to other laptops. They are made out of plastic, so you could sand them down.
Trackpad can be mostly fixed by uninstalling the lenovo one and installing a newer generic one.
The CPU will lower the clock speed when you're not using it to lower heat and power.

Take a look here. The mydigitalssd part is not quite shipping just yet.

[quote name="MyDigitalSSD" post=9759491]200pcs are built and shipping soon. We are doing some testing on the new 128GB A19nm Toshiba chips (the 1st of these chips) to make sure everything is good to go. We should have them up for sale very very soon.

Thank you for the update! Do you know what price will you be selling it for?

I keep having this issue in some games, while playing everything is fine until all keys on the keyboard turn into shortcuts. I think maybe it has something to do with a alt + CTRL + shift combo or something. Only way I can solve this issue is by rebooting while in game which is a pain.

Anybody know what to press or how to disable this from happening?
