sammieking - Switch to the Windows High Performance profile and CPU-Z should show your CPU at a faster speed.

I agree. The sharp edge on the Y510P is terrible. Lenovo might have done this so their business customers would avoid buying the Y510P which has great performance at a much better price point compared to their business laptops. You might need to get an external mouse and keyboard to fix up some of the Y510P's short comings.

For the track pad issues, my laptop has an ELAN track pad so I switched to some much better drivers. This track pad worked horrible before doing this but now it works great.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ide...ing-updated-elan-track-pad-drivers-y510p.html

Anyone waiting for an updated 256 MB drive from MyDigitalSSD might want to have a look at a similar drive from AData.

    http://www.ncix.com/detail/adata-sp900-m-2-2242-256gb-aa-98599.htm

NCIX only has a few in stock. I think the picture is of a longer 80 mm SSD drive but the part number confirms that it is the correct 42 mm size which is what the Y510P uses. Before ordering, remove the bottom case on your laptop and make sure that Lenovo remembered to install the appropriate socket in your laptop. This forum shows you what you need to look for.

    Hi guys,

I'm sorry, I guess my questions have been answered already, but reading the last 10-15 pages didn't help with my confusion at all :(
The important part: I want a SSD.

I have the y510p with one gt755m, a DVD drive, i7 and 8GB Ram and the HDD seems to be this one: ST1000LM014-1EJ164

I thought that this is a combination of a standard HDD with some kind of SSD where the most used files are stored. Now I read here that people want to use a m.2 SSD. Do they want to replace that little sshd SSD with a bigger one or is there a free m.2 slot in the notebook? This whole thing confuses me, because I thought the only way of getting a real SSD is to use the ultrabay or replace the SSHD with a pure SSD..

Sorry guys, hard to put my confusion in words.

Quick answer is that you want to buy a M.2 SSD in at least 240gb capacity.

Your notebook has two hardware interfaces that can be used to connect storage devices.
    1) M.2 card slot - useful only for SSDs
    2) 2.5" SATA drive bay - useful for SSDs or traditional mechanical HDDs.

When you get your M.2 SSD in 240GB+ capacity, you will want to install it into your laptop, put windows on it, and install all of your games and applications onto it so they can benefit from the speed of an SSD. Your existing mechanical HDD (in the 2.5" SATA slot) should be used for bulk media storage of music, photos videos, movies etc.

You are correct that some models of Lenovo Y500 / Y510 came with a small capacity (32gb) SSD in the M.2 slot. This small drive was used as a cache for the larger mechanical HDD. The reason that your laptop came pre-configured this way is because a high capacity M.2 SSD was prohibitively expensive at the time, and using a smaller SSD as a cache gave you SOME of the benefits of SSD speed without costing too much.

However pricing and availability of M.2 SSDs have changed since then. And since you can afford it, you will get the absolute best performance by using a high-capacity SSD dedicated for OS / games / apps. It will be gar superior performance than trying to use a small-capzcity SSD as a cache.

How can i check if I have a m.2 port? I think the HDD I got with the notebook is the hybrid drive SSHD.

Ah, my mistake. You actually truly do have a Solid State Hybrid Drive.

I had made the (mistaken) assumption that you had a caching M.2 SSD + mechanical HDD, and just referred to it as an SSHD as an error on your part. In fact, it was an error on my part.

In any case... some Lenovo Y510's came with an M.2 slot, some did not. The easiest way to check is to just unscrew the bottom of your laptop panel, and see if there is a physical M.2 slot there. It's going to be a lot faster to just do that, than trying to find your exact laptop model number, original factory spec, etc.

If your laptop DOES have an M.2 slot in it, then just put an M.2 SSD in there.
If your laptop does not have an M.2 slot in it, then you're stuck with a single 2.5" SATA drive interface as the only way to get internal storage on your laptop. But the good news is that SSD prices are the lowest they have ever been, and even a 1TB SSD can be bought for <$400 these days.

You can also get an adapter that can fit a 2.5inch drive into the ultrabay on ebay. That way, you can have a 256ssd for the OS, a 1TB for regular data, and 2TB as an ultrabay drive for backup/seldomly used data. That's the power of the y510p.

Yes, I would have used the Ultrabay, but with the m.2 port I can keep my DVD drive. I mean I use it twice per year or something, so it's really important to me  But it's always an option ;)

Edit: Are those m.2 42mm SSDs that are currently aviable, mainly the 128GB MyDigitalSSD, notably slower than those normal SSDs in the Ultrabay Slot?

While slower the little mSata and m.2 drives are so much faster than HDD it hardly matters.

I think i found out why my fps in bf4 is dropping all of the sudden. When these big fps drops happen my cpu temps are dropping aswell which is leading me to believe that my cpu is thermal throttling. I guess the y510p isn't able to play bf4 well enough.

    Hey All,

I have an Acer 3820TG (i5-480M 2.6 GHz, AMD 6550M 1GB, Core: 600 MHz, Memory: 800 MHz, DDR3,13.3", 1366x768)... The thing was a beast in its day because of its dual cooling. Anyways, I was very active in the 3820TG thread and learned a LOT from everyone here in the NotebookReview.com community.

So here I am, returning. I had to make a quick decision on a new machine today and had a budget to work in, so after about 5 mins looking on exoticPC, I remembered the Y510P. I'm not a fan of the new model with the single AMD GPU and was lucky to find a Y510P on NCIX.

    I5-4200M 15.6in Notebook FHD 16:9 6GB DDR3 RAM 1TB HHD+8GB SSHD SLI 2XGT755M 2G Win8.1

So, I came here and went through this thread and searched for the term "update". Now I have some questions:
    1) Are there still issues with SLI on Win 8.1?
    2) Do people here downgrade to Win 7? If so, are there any custom drivers/BIOS required? Or will a fresh Win7 and manually downloading device drivers work fine?
    3) Anyone here upgrade the panel?
4)I'm planning on upgrading the CPU to the I7, but I'm having trouble finding an online seller in Canada. Anyone have any suggestions?
5)So I'm reading I need a new wireless card lol. Thoughts?
6)Last question, I've been reading that the model with the 1TB HDD/8GB SSHD hybrid doesn't have the M.2 slot but...
Wyall just said his Y510P with the Hybrid drive does have the M.2. Can anyone confirm if these last Y510P's being sold off have the M.2 slot? Cause that would be awesome and make this laptop a million times cooler to me.

Anyways folks, thanks for reading and I look forward to posting here as I mess around more with my Y510P when it comes in.

    Thanks!!!!

yeah after updating intel extreme tuning utility my cpu is definitely getting throttled in bf4.

Is there anyway to correct this using the intel utility?

Throttling occurs because your temps are too high. You could try throttlestop, though I personally don't use it as 90% of the time it's the gpu that's limiting the frame rate, and not the cpu.

With the intel xtu, you can try undervolting.

but if its my gpu getting hot that wouldn't be displayed in XTU, right?

bf4 runs fine with an average of about 65 fps then according to xtu as my cpu temp gets to around 97C it will thermal throttle cpu's to .80ghz and my frames will drop to around 45-50 fps.

what things do i want to change in xtu in order to undervolt my processors?

    thanks for the help

That happened to me too. So I uninstalled and it improved the slowdowns a bit but problem persists although I play planetside 2.
Also when I use Throttlestop my fps are going up and down so I don't use it too.

strange how this started happening all the sudden

i did notice power management was set to balanced so i changed it back to high performance but i bet that isnt whats causing the throttling

    1) I haven't had any issues with the SLI in Windows 8.1 (but I have the 750M SLI and not 755M SLI - though they are not that different since 755M is just an overclocked version).

    2) Win 8 works fine for me. I find Win 8 actually more stable that Win 7. All you need to do is install a third party start button application (like Start Menu 8) and you never see the Metro interface.

    3) Haven't upgraded the Panel (I was lucky to get a matte display).

    4) It seems to be hard to find the i7 right now. Just need to google around and see if anyone still carries stock.

    5) I haven't had any issues with my wireless card after driver updates, etc.

    6) It's unclear as to which ones have the M.2 slot or not. The common understanding was that those with the 24gb SSD (like the one I have) has the M.2 slot and the 1TB+8gbssd hybrid hard drive version doesn't. You really won't know until you actually get the laptop (I don't think you can find one with 24gb SSD anymore).

Just to add this: I bought mine in March 2014 in Germany.

Shouldn't there be newer models like the y50-70 that give more for the same price or something like that?

1)/2) Ok. I've been avoiding Win 8. This will give me a chance to use it and I'll be getting this Start Menu 8 you mention, thanks for the tip.

    3) I know this isn't a common upgrade to laptops but I know there a folks out there who manage to figure out what displays will actually connect and work even if it's not listed in a manufacturer technician repair manual. Like I don't mind the 1080p at ALL but I've seen reviews where they mention the contrast and colour reproduction are really bad.

    4) I've been looking. Cant find anything less that the 4800mq and I'd have to ship from US to CAN. Can't find a 4702 or 4700 unless it's an QS/ES from China on fleabay. I'm not sure I can justify the price but I know I'd like the quad core i7 4800mq over the dual core i5 in mine. Hummmmmmm...

    5) Thanks.

    6) I'll open it up before I even turn the thing on lol.

Thanks for taking the time to help out greatwiseone :)

Thanks everyone for the info. Much appreciated. The thing is in the mail and I haven't felt this excited for a package since I was a kid at xmas time.

So people who buy this tend to:
    - Upgrade the CPU if they get an i5
    - Add a larger m.2 drive (I'm leaning towards a 120ish GB drive) and also, I've never used a hybrid drive; can it still be used as a hybrid storage device if it's not the primary drive with the OS?
    - Re-paste the GPUs with non-conductive paste as I've read the ultra-bay GPU has a very weak paste

Anyone here tried fifa 15 demo? I get 60fps with High settings and 1080p. But msaa off. when I turn it to 4x, I only get around 40 plus occasional lags. That is with a single 755, with SLI its unplayable. I guess that's micro-stuttering?

well i solved my cpu's getting thermal throttled in bf4 due to too much heat. I undervolted the dynamic cpu voltage offset in XTU by -90.82 mV. Any more than -90mV and my system shuts down.

max cpu heat now is 83C, it usually hovers around 79-81c

The dynamic cpu voltage offset is the only thing I have adjusted so yes all cores are turbo enabled from 2.4ghz to 3.2ghz.

Another thing I have started doing while playing bf4 is locking my frames at 61fps which I think is helping my gpu run cooler.

How big is the speed difference in daily use and gaming comparing using a m.2 128GB SSD as cache drive vs. using the ssd to put Windows and the games I currently play on it? And is there a big difference in life time of the ssd when I only use it as cache drive?

    Hello everyone.
I got question. Something went wrong and my CPU or mobo is damaged. Today i found out that i need to register my warranty first, but Lenovo knows nothing about my y510p (i gave them my serial numer, they said they know only country of origin = Holand and that this is a strange case) and i need to contact the shop where i bought this laptop (it is some import seller) and take from them import invoice or something like that.
Do they (seller) have to give me this invoice? Does every y510p has a Lenovo warranty (2 years one)? And if i opened my y510p, is lenovo going to make any trouble about this? I did not harm any components and i did not have any warranty seals (is that possible?). Lenovo computer service would be the one in Deutschland (but im from Poland).
    Excuse me my grammar :)
    Hope someone can help, cheers.

Register your laptop for warranty with lenovo online then contact them about getting it repaired under warranty.

Well if you use the SSD as a cache drive it wont be able to support TRIM iirc, but that doesn't matter too much since most modern SSD's have garbage collection...

Personally i recommend having the OS on a 128GB M.2, then having all your games on the 1TB drive, then leaving the ODD for the SLI card.

While the M.2 SSD is slower than any commercial SATA III 2.5" SSD, you wont notice the difference unless all you do is copy files to it.

As for the CPU, i've had amazing results both thermally and performance-wise by disabling one core, doing a safe (80mV) undervolt and OC'ing the first core to 3.6Ghz. In this way you'll have better performance in single-or-dual threaded applications while saving battery life AND having no CPU throttling. The main issue with overheating on the Y510p should be due to the ultrabay GPU anyways.

Do this at your own risk and you will need the modded BIOS.

Hey guys, I just have a quick question.

Whenever I am on SLI, I find the colors too yellowish. So I adjusted color settings inside the nvidia CP. I saved the settings and no problem. But after a shutdown, my color settings are reverting to default colors. Although I can see that it is set to my custom colors, it still displays the default ones.

So what I have to do is select the default, and select the custom one again. But I dont want to do this everytime I shutdown and log in. Did anyone of you experienced this? Any solution?

I have 755m sli and with the latest drivers. Thanks!

Anyone has 100% disk usage problem? When playing planetside 2 and after some time laptop starts to have fps drops every 5 seconds making the game unplayable when I check always the disk usage is 100% an this directly affects the gameplay, this not only happens on games but it's very random because it happened while browsing with Firefox.
I tried to disable some windows services like superfecth, windows update and search, but nothing changed most of the time, System process is making use of all the disk.
Any fix? Or the 1tb sshd is too slow?

Sounds like a faulty HDD. or some malware.
I'm not sure enough about HDDs to suggest some programs to test the life of a HDD besides seagate "seatools". It tests almost all HDDs, they don't have to be seagate HDDs. Make sure the trim isn't tripped in the results.
Also, try running 1) disk cleanup, then 2) defrag, then 3) run a few antivirus programs. MSE, malwarebytes, Kapersky etc etc.

    Hope this helps.

I think that I fixed my problem, what I did is to disable paging file(changing max and min size didn't fixed anything). Though I just tested like an hour, but I'll test today a bit more.

Windows 10 announced. Anyone care to explain if drivers would still work if I tried the technical preview tomorrow on this laptop?

No one know until they install and try it.
Well, I worry about whether SLI support will be crippled again when installing windows 10 like when windows 8.1 just release.

So far Windows 10 seems like another UI redo (or undo ;D).
Everything seems to be working fine, although I might have to reinstall a tocuhpad driver. Haven't tried gaming with SLI yet cuz midterms but I'll update you guys on Friday probably.

As long at it's DDR3L-1.35V (frequency doesn't matter) it should work, however make sure your store has a good return policy if it doesn't work. Also make sure your laptop came in a 1x8 GB config instead of a 2x4 GB. Mine came 2x4, so that puts RAM upgrades out of the question for me, however due to the small 14 inch screen and with my SSD loading apps quickly, i don't multitask too heavily on it.

Thanks Jobine. Mine came with 2x4GB installed and I'm looking to get it up to 16GB so I'll purchase a pair of these RAMs. I also want to replace the 1TB HDD with a SSD and move the HDD to the DVD slot, can you recommend a HDD caddy that's compatible with Y510p?

Can anyone verify if this highlighted driver should even be installed in the first place? I also noticed that there are two Nvidia Graphics Drivers?
