Tried new driver from Intel site but it did not change anything. Next changed setting to Auto, still connecting at 144. The router is more than capable, Netgear Nighthawk R7000 set in the up to 600Mbps mode for 2.4Ghz connection. Router in home location is TPLink N300

Rolled back driver to 15.10.3.2 version, no luck either. Guess I am just stuck at 144

Run a memory test with just a single RAM module installed in slot-1. Then try it again with only the second module installed in slot-1. If one passes and the other fails, you have a bad module.

If both pass, then test again using only memory slot-2 to see if it's a bad memory socket.

If it all passes but still continues to fail with both modules, then you have incompatible memory and need to get something else.

Depends on budget. Check out the Sager/Clevo laptops. They are highly configurable (CPU, GPU, HDD, SDD, mSATA, WiFi, etc.). The Sager NP8265-S is pretty sweet, but it will run you considerably more than a Y510p.

The last video driver update made it so Adobe After Effects and Premiere crash on startup. Not too happy as I need to use these programs.

Why do they decide to use two GTs instead of one GTX?

Update to previous comments on 2230 wireless. Upgrading to thecurrent Intel driver (16.7.0)did allow me to get a 300Mbps connection at home on the TPLink N300 router and has been stable tonight. No idea why its not connecting faster on the Netgear Nighthawk at the office. Guess I need to look into firmware update for that unit.

    1. 755M SLI is cheaper to manufacture
    2. Adds "unique" value
    3. Single better GPU requires a larger single heatsink. This would increase the thickness of the laptop. Look at the Gigabyte P25W, it has HUGE fans on the rear.

I somehow managed to turn off the lights for the speakers, but cannot figure out how to turn them back on, the keyboard is easy, because it's Fn + Space, but I'm not sure how I ended up turning of the lights for the speakers, and want to turn them back on.

By the way, why does it [Task Manager - Performance tab] say there are four slots for RAM, yes I am using two of them obviously, but where the hell are the other two, even CPU-Z reports there are four slots with slot 2 & 4 being empty, and I did have it open on Thursday, and there appear to be only two, so what the heck is going on.

Hello everybody. I am looking for a gaming laptop and am strongly considering this as my choice. I have done much research on the Y510 and I just have a couple of questions :)

    1. First off, would this laptop be the best bang for my buck? I got about $1200 to spend and all my research had pointed me to this laptop.

    2. What model/version of this laptop would you recommend? I was thinking about buying this one, Amazon.com: Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p 15.6-Inch Laptop (59406636) Dusk Black: Computers & Accessories though I have heard that the 24G cache one and one with a 1080p matte screen is the best choice though I can't seem to find those specifications with 8GB Ram and GeForce 755m SLI (I guess the 750m would work too). I also don't know how to check if it has the glossy or matte screen on the one in the link. I would like it if someone could check.

    3. Does the 24GB Cache make a big difference compared to the normal 8GB one? I've seen many people recommend it over the 8G one. I believe it is because the 24GB one is upgradable and the 8G isn't but I would like confirmation on that.

    4. What solutions do you guys have about the second SLI GPU's temperature being so hot? Here are some solutions I have heard of so far that I would like information on:
    -Repasteing (Which paste works best?)
-Lowering Voltage to CPU and/or GPU (Looking for information on how to do this)
-Increasing Fan Speed (Again, looking for tutorial on this. Heard it's blocked in BIOS)
-Something about Heat Sinks (Would buying a better one work? Any recommendations?)
-Cutting a hole at the bottom or modifying laptop.
    -Buying a cooling pad

    5. What are the serious problems with the GPU running at 95°C or higher? I've heard it limits the processor to 2.4Ghz but wouldn't it cause eventual melting of components or other problems limiting the life of the computer?

    6. What are the first things I should do after the laptop arrives as far as configuration goes? I don't know weather to keep windows 8, upgrade to 8.1, or downgrade to 7, since apparently these different OS's work better or worse with SLI. I also heard the GPU needs to be configured and would like to know how to set that up.

    7. I am mainly buying a new laptop for Elder Scrolls Online. If you have tested the beta for that game with this laptop please inform me of how it performs. :)

    8. After 10+ hours of gameplay on an mmo, how hot does the GPU normally get?

Thank you very much for any information you can give me! :D

According to intel extreme tuning utility my cpu temp is getting up to 87C and as high as 96C. I'v never seen it at 96c but when I hover over temp it says that 96c is the highest it has reached.

These temps are being reached while playing BF4.

    Are these temps ok?

edit: I just stopped playing some bf4 tdm and after about 3 mins of logging out my temps are 60c while typing this.

No 96C is overheating. The laptop will shut down when CPU reaches 100C.

    Thanks octiceps

IT has never shut down on me. I would say from monitoring the temps myself while playing it usually hovers from 84-87c.

After searching this thread those temps look familiar with other y510p's running BF4

Yeah BF4 heats up the CPU like almost no game I've ever seen. That said if you aren't using ThrottleStop and still getting close to 100C then that's just scary.

LOL I think he's referring to the up/down volume buttons!

(Even though the Y510p ain't got them) :D

I saw a post from him at the Lenovo forum, and there he said "I've got the IdeaPad Y550 4186" NOT A Y510p.

    1. If you look up "Best budget gaming laptop" articles, the Lenovo Y series are always at the top of the list. They really are the best bang for the buck.

    2. As far as the screen goes, matte is not necessarily "better" than glossy. It's a matter of personal taste.

3.The 8GB "SSD" is not a separate drive. It is built-in to a hybrid HDD. The 24GB caching SSD is a separate M.2 form factor solid state drive. It's possible to replace the 24GB with a larger 128GB M.2 SSD. The function of the small cache SSD is to store your most frequently used files on the SSD for quick access. It usually does make a pretty noticable difference in performance, but swapping the 24GB for a larger SSD and running your entire OS off of it would be even faster.

Then again, you could just swap the regular HDD for an SSD as well. Then you wouldn't need the caching SSD (or you could use it for something else, like Linix).

Hi! I have a Y510P on its way to me, should get here tomorrow. I started by looking for a worthy replacement to my Y460P. It still worked fine, I just really wanted a 1080P screen for Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. I also do light gaming. I was looking for something around $1000, and had trouble finding the right combination...such as a great configuration except a U processor, etc. I ended up going for a Y510P, with SLI 755M, 16 gb RAM, 1TB HDD + 24GB SSD. This decision was made thanks heavily to this thread.

I used a swivel Logitech lift with my Y460P which helped with heat. After reading about the heat issues with the Y510P, I decided to try another fan cooler. However, I needed something that would work comfortably in my lap.

I bought two cooling pads and will end up returning the one I don't like. I went with a Cooler Master LapAir and a Targus Chill Mat AWE80US. I would have tried the Targus AWE55US, but liked the 80's front lip and adjustable stand, which in turn would provide air to come in through the back versus the close-ended 55.

My thoughts so far between the two:

    Targus AWE55US
    Pros:
    * It's small (good--it fits my 15.6 DV6 fine)
    * Easy to pick up with both the coolpad and laptop secured in your hands due to the open sides
    * Adjustable stand in back raises or lowers the laptop in the rear
    * Two fans instead of one
    * Very Quiet
    * Solid feeling USB connector
    * Comfortable in lap, more portable than the CM

    Cons:
    * May not be designed as well as the Cooler Master in regards to cooling
    * No USB passthrough
    * May pick up exhaust heat from the Y510P
    * The front lip may not hold as well as you expect. A rounded front edge slips right over.

    Cooler Master Lap Air
    Pros:
    * The single blower fan feels like it moves air a little better, you can also feel the air rising up from the sides which may help dissipate the heat from the GPU vents on the Y510P
    * Easy to clean fan
    * Vents specifically in the back, no chance of picking up exhaust heat from the Y510P
    * Despite the size, still decently comfortable in your lap

    Cons:
    * Fan is noticeable. It's like hearing a leaf blower 5 houses down from your house with the window closed.
    * Not as portable at the Targus. I can't see this fitting in my bag.
    * Not height-adjustable.
    * Design is not as appealing. It looks like a TV tray.
    * I don't feel as "confident" when moving the laptop with the coolpad. Harder to hold both, just need to be more careful.

I did a little test with my Y460P: I have Photoshop and Illustrator open and have Sim City playing (high settings at 1366x768). I'm not doing anything in the game, it just sits in the same spot in the city. Used speedtest for temperatures. I realize it's not the best setup for a test, and will go with something more consistent, such as a stress test, with the Y510P.

I started with letting the PC run with no pad.
    GPU: 94*
    CPU C1: 92*
    CPU C2: 93*
    CPU C3: 95*
    CPU C4: 92*

Let the PC run on my old swivel/lift pad for 10 minutes.
    GPU: 78*
    CPU C1: 88*
    CPU C2: 90*
    CPU C3: 86*
    CPU C4: 83*

Then I let it run on the CM for 10 minutes:
    GPU: 74*
    CPU C1: 78*
    CPU C2: 80*
    CPU C3: 78*
    CPU C4: 83*

Then I let it run on the Targus for 10 minutes:
    GPU: 75*
    CPU C1: 79*
    CPU C2: 84*
    CPU C3: 84*
    CPU C4: 83*

Depending on how these perform with the Y510P is how I'll make my final decision. If the Targus isn't too far away from the CM I may stick with the Targus. The smaller size and adjustability is worth it IMO.

I wouldn't think thats worth 50 dollars. Apparently the 755 is just a slightly overclocked 750. I doubt the average gamer could even tell the difference anyway. But then again, I'm pretty new to this stuff...

    As for SLI...good luck -.-

Don't mean to hate on the laptop, cause I do love my y510p single GPU, but I've heard mostly bad things with SLI. The heat issues are crazy, MOSTLY on the ultrabay gpu however...

As for what the problems are having anything run above 95 degrees...anything about 80 would worry me...but anything above 85-90 will probably start to damage the laptop in the long run, or possibly the short run as well.

If you're not worried about that, sweaty palms are annoying on a laptop as well. Stains too.

Any y500 ultrabay units will fit into the y510p. Likewise any y400 units will fit into the y410p.

    Hi,

I am new to this forum and I just registered because I am in the process of buying a Lenovo Y510P. Originally, I had ordered a Y410P with a single GT755M and 1600x900 HD+ gloss screen, but then I changed my mind and decided to get a Y510P. I wanted the one with a single GT750M but the 7260 wireless card and 24Gb cache SSD for 1039,99$ on the Canadian Lenovo website, but I read about the shipping times and issues and I am not quite sure about what to do now.

I currently live in France for the semester (student exchange) and I am buying a new laptop because my old Asus N53SV's motherboard fried a couple weeks ago. My issue is that I need the new Lenovo laptop shipped before March 27th at my parents' address because they come see me in France after that but I doubt it would ship on time.

So I looked on the web and I found a deal for a previous generation Y510P with dual GT750M SLI and 1Tb + 8Gb SSD cache for 1057$ and it would ship in 3-5 business days. That would be perfect for me but it has the N-2230 wifi card known for having various issues and the GT750 and not the newer 755...

I am quite lost right now and would need advice from you guys! So what do you think?

    a) Current order of Y410P single GT755M, no SSD, N-2230, 1600x900HD+ gloss display = 899,99$
    b) New order of Y510P single GT750M, 24Gb SSD, N-7260, 1080p FHD matte display (but probably wouldn't ship on time...) = 1039,99$
    c) 3rd party internet deal of Y510P dual GT750M SLI, 8Gb SSD, N-2230, 1080p FHD matte display (3-5 business days shipping) = 1057$

    Help me please!

    Thanks,

    D4N

@ D4N, I would go for option c if I were you, since there isn't a bit difference between 750m and 755m, and since time matters as well.

Anyone knows if this would fit in a Y510p?

Alright, so I'm considering this as an option because the Y50 seems like it's adding a lot of portabiltiy and "premium" features I don't need. I basically just want a decent screen in a 14-15" laptop that's capable of playing some games. I'm considering the model with the following specs:

    NVIDIA GeForce GT755M GDDR5 2GB
15.6" FHD LED Glare Wedge (1920x1080)
    1TB 5400 RPM + 24GB SSD
    DVD Recordable (Dual Layer)

My major concern is the display. I've heard great things about the matte display, but it seems to only be available on the $1000+ models (Bluray or SLI, which I don't really need). Is the glossy display that's available on the device still a good option? I can't say as I expect to use this laptop outdoors so I am not too concerned about that.

I would avoid N2230 models, which means a and c. It is known to have problems. There is no way to fix it. Unless you do not plan to rely on wifi.

It's easy to "fix" if you don't mind a modified BIOS and buying a better card. Some people are having issues with this upgrade though, so it's best to just buy one with the 7260 already installed.

Well my major concern for not choosing option B right away is the shipping time. Since I had already ordered the Y410P, I asked Lenovo Sales Support for an order cancellation and I am therefore waiting for their confirmation before paying for something else. That's why I think I would go with option C, but that N-2230 scares me a little bit!

Nope, SLI is not compatible with optimus. You need to remove the ultrabay card for optimus to function. You can switch the card in and out as needed.

Well, I would like to avoid the SLI model due to the potential heat issues. And I'd rather have the faster processor than the second GPU for the price.

The main problem you typically run into when cloning an HDD to an SSD is that the HDD is usually larger, and most cloning programs will not allow you to copy a larger drive to a smaller drive. This problem is easily solved though, by first shrinking the HDD partition size(s) down until they would fit. In other words, if you have a 1TB HDD and a 240GB SDD, then you need to shrink the partition(s) on the 1TB drive until they are the same size, or smaller than the available partition space on the SDD (<240GB in this example).

There are a number of programs that can do this. A free one I like is Gparted. It is a stand alone, Linux based utility. It is also included in Parted Magic, a Slackware Linux based partition management, troubleshooting and diagnostic OS. While Gparted has the ability to shrink partitions without losing data, you should ALWAYS backup important data before doing anything like this!

Obviously the used space on the larger HDD cannot be more than the available space on the SDD (in our example, if the 1TB HDD had 300GB used, you could not shrink the partitions down to fit on a 240GB SDD).

What are the best ways to resolve the 2nd GPU's heat issues?

How do you guys recommend cleaning the y510p or any of the y series. I feel like a lot of materials would scratch it. I'm probably just being overly cautious, but any recommendations? Just cloth and water? Anything to avoid?

I mean just the outer case and where my palms rest.

I still have the plastic screen cover over the screen, how should I clean that?

    1) Is there a way to know if caps lock is on or not? like a notification or something
2)I got the laptop with 24gb ssd what exactly are you guys installing on it?
    3) is there a hardrive light that blinks like normal laptops do?

    1. The second light from the right on the row of indicator lights is the CAPS LOCK indicator. Looks like a upward pointing arrow with a capital A in the middle.
    2. Most people are using it as a cache for the HDD, some have installed a lean OS on it, e.g. a Linux distro or Windows 7 with a bunch of crap disabled.
    3. Nope (sucks I know).

So I was browsing the web about the Lenovo Y510P model 59388313 and I am a bit confused about 2 things:

    - Some places mention 2 3.0 USB ports, others only 1 -> which is correct?
    - some places say it comes with the N-2230 wireless card, some the N-7260 -> again, which is correct?

    Thanks!
