XM chip on the W530? How much are you paying for that? The XM chips cost 1000$ alone lol. And 32GB RAM is like another 300$ down the pooper.

I fixed my issue by installing windows 8. But something I don't understand. Why are the video boards changing between them if you play a game or not, if the switch does not occur anyway on battery? Wasn't this supposed to be a feature to save energy? What energy am I saving if the GT755 card works only when plugged in? Hope you understand my question...

I still don't get it. "Optimus saves battery life by automatically switching the power of the discrete graphics processing unit (GPU) off when it is not needed and switching it on when needed again.". So why is it plug-in/plug-off dependent? As I understood, this technology is specifically made for when a portable device runs on battery, so it can save battery when the dedicated GPU is not needed. But if I can't use the GPU on battery, no matter the situation, where is the power saving feature? Maybe I'm missing something, but as I see it, it's plug-in/plug off dependent, no any other way.

I have the Y510p also and I would like to share overclocking results. Here is my 3DMark 11 ( NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-4700MQ,LENOVO 20217). I had to crank up the voltage for a bit to maintain system stability and the maximum temperature according to GPUz was 61C and 67C which is pretty good. The reason is because I mounted it on a twin fan laptop cooling pad and took the bottom cover off which allows direct airflow to the entire underside of the laptop. I found out that if simply place the laptop on a laptop cooler it will not cool well, you HAVE TO increase the gap between the fans and the cooling pad further and this allow a conventional air flow instead of trapping the hot air underneath the laptop. I only knew this recently because after studying my MSI 660Ti for some time I realized the open air design is better vs the reference 660Ti which has a very packed case. I hope the information was useful to some extent and if you just reply I would be happy that someone actually read what I wrote.

Please see my other screenshots for numbers. ( imgur: the simple image sharer)

Hey guys, I just got my new y510p (750m sli) and it's now showing the Intell 4600 onboard video in the device manager.

I tried installing the driver from Lenovo's site but it won't let me.

Anyone know how to activate this?

Ok, so I was able to get the Intel Integrated card recognized by taking out the 750m ultrabay card.

Is there any way to have both the SLI and the Intel Integrated graphics both installed?

Nope, as stated many times, Optimus (the technology that switches to Intel graphics on demand) and SLI are not compatible. So if you want better battery life, you will have to take out the SLI ultrabay. You can buy a DVD burner ultrabay as a fill-in for 70$ on Lenovo.com, free shipping.

You can get most of your drivers there, however i suggest you get your WiFi and Video Card drivers off the official sites, for more up-to-date drivers that deliver better performance.

Yes, I have had that happen 3-4 times after a few hours of gaming. I suspect the nvidia card/driver crashed. Thing is in windows 8.1 it seems to be intelligent enough to actually restart the driver without crashing the game/software using the video cards which is nice.

The system uses the 24GB ssd as a caching drive, after using for awhile ( down reboot 10-15 times) it flies and will drop down to 10 seconds or so. However my 840 pro 512GB drive lets me boot from windows logo to desktop in under 4 seconds.

I suggest that you do not attempt to clone the drive over as it will give you nothing but headaches, you will never get the lenovo onekey wokring no matter how hard you try. Just start up the machine, register and then shutdown and exit. Swap out hdd with ssd, reboot and clean install 8.1. the lenovo apps will actually be tied to your windows 8.1 username (hence why I said register) and I only needed to find 2 drivers after install (I cannot remember which ones, one was a management one and the other who knows) and it runs beautifully. 4 second bootup on my 840 pro 512GB

I have the SLI model but remove the ultrabay card while I am at school and I get 5 hrs from it running in optimus mode. Thing is are you running normal balanced/high performance or are you remembering to switch it to powersaver mode while out? the swap to power saver mode makes a huge impact.

My unit runs great and have had negligible issues. As long as you do swap out the ultrabay graphics card and put the laptop into power saver mode I get 5 hours out of it which is more than enough for my classes.

It prompts you to use a 16gb+ recovery usb key, it won't allow cd/dvd media. Anyhow you can goto microsofts site and download the windows 8.1 image without any problems and just make a usb key from that. Easy Peasy.

I am a long time gamer and heavy computer user, I typically spend several hundred on higher grade monitors as I don't like the entry level units and I must say, the screen I received with my y510p is easily one of the best screens I have ever used, clear, concise, vibrant, In a word, BEAUTIFUL.

Do not fret and definitely go with the SLI edition, it runs well contrary to alot of the complaints people have said in here. the vast majority of those have all been heat related which will of course be a problem with dual video cards and an i7 however with a decent cooling pad or stands it will not be an issue.Make sure you get a current not previous gen system that has the dual 755m's instead of the 750m's as they seem to run cooler and faster. Everything I run runs well and runs great. There is a huge difference between a Single card and Dual-SLI though as in some of my titles I have had more than double the frame rates (I presume because it is running PhysX on the same card at the same time while running the video while with sli it has an entire card worth to bolster it.)

you can download windows 8.1 directly from Microsoft and install from that. If you need to do a clean install of 8.1 and you have a windows 8 lenovo you need to use one of the generic install keys and then enter the proper key once windows is installed. These are the 2 generic keys authorized by microsoft for installation only
    •334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT for Core/Home
    •XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB for Professional
once you are in windows you can activate with your units actual key.

There are 3rd party sites the deal in refurbished units that are without os as part of the wiping process ont eh refurb removes the windows key from the unit firmware. In these cases they would be OS'less and also cost ~600 with a 60-90 day warranty.

I would highly suggest installing nvidia straight from tnvidia's site and running the geforce experience software and the auto-update feature from that. Otherwise what driver do you think you would even remotely need to update to improve performance/stability on? (Ok, maybe the touchpad if they ever introdouce an update that allows a deadzone on the bottom to prevent mousemovement while clicking)

Ok, it does depend which powersaver mode you are in and you can override it to force the nvidia card while on battery or the iGPU while on AC. The thing is the iGPU requires next to no power while the nvidia cards require a steady but much larger amount. Siwtching off the nvidia GPU and running on the iGPU when on battery gives you the benefit of a much lower power consumption which in turn allows you to run on your battery much longer. Like I said though you can configure it to ignore the power setting and run in high performance mode when playing a specific game if you want (just expect your battery to not last very long in this case)

I swapped out my 1tb + 8gb SSHD for a 500gb Samsung EVO SSD and am really pleased with the results. I didn't do a fresh install, I cloned my old drive over to the SSD using Samsung's data migration, which took right around an hour and thirty minutes via USB 3.0 (had right around 125 gb used up). In terms of speeds compared to the SSHD, boot times aren't too different, the SSHD was right around 13 to 15 seconds where as the SSD is a solid 10 seconds. If anything, the boot times are a lot more consistent as the SSHD would sometimes take closer to 25 or 30 seconds. Mind you, I had "fast boot" activated within the Windows 8.1 options when I got these times on the SSHD. Once the desktop is reached, you notice everything is ready to go within seconds with the SSD.

The main improvement is in the opening of applications (example, Microsoft Word takes less that 3 seconds), game load times etc. Its ridiculous! This can be attributed, I'm guessing, to the 5400 rpm HDD within the SSHD, which I'm still not too sure as to why Lenovo went that route. I haven't done any benchmarks as of yet, but I'll definitely get some going. All in all, if you find a good deal then I'd definitely recommend a good SSD, I only got mine because it was $140 off and don't plan on going past the 500 gb (I've got an external drive for bulk data either way).

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Y510P with dual-graphics. however I really want the optical drive too. I called Lenovo sales and they said they have zero accessories of any type whatsoever for the ultrabay, and will not be making any more of them. bummer.

So I'm wondering - should I buy the version with the optical drive included instead, and try to find the secondary ultrabay graphics card elsewhere? Or should I get the dual-graphics version and try to find an ultrabay optical drive somewhere else? (and does anyone know if those are sold anywhere?)

    Any help greatly appreciated!!

Optical drive ultrabay is available. Check Lenovo online store and look for DB36. It is under Y500 accessories. Works perfectly with Y510P.

Just found out, DB36 is not available. Confirmed thru website and call to sales. GRRR. I also asked if the ultrabay graphics card was available, they said no. I guess Lenovo is ceasing all production / parts / support for the Y510? this sucks.

    Hey Y510p owners.

Can you guys send 5.1 sound from the Y510p to a Home Theater and get surround sound? Because I can't... My Home Theater doesn't have an HDMI input so I use this device:

Amazon.com: ViewHD Premium HDMI to HDMI + Audio (sPDIF + RAC L/R) Audio Extractor | Converter: Electronics

That way I send HDMI from my laptop to it and then HDMI to my Optoma Projector (video) and optical cable to my Home Theater (audio). It worked like that with my old Y500 and also works with my Xbox 360, I get surround sound that way, but its not working with my Y510 for some reason... I only get surround 2.1 sound and rear speakers makes no sound at all.

When I go Sound > Playback Devices I get this:

Optoma is my Projector, Speakers the laptop ones and Realtek Digital Output dunno, when I click test on those I don't hear any sound

On Max Number of Channels it says 2 :S but I have a proper 5.1 sound system wich works with any device except my Y510p.

On Speakers Setup, Audio Channels it only list Stereo

And Surround Speakers option its greyed out. So I suppose its something about drivers or some settings with wrong configuration or something?

My touch pad is not working anymore, not finding it in the "Mouse" section in the Control Panel, any idea about which connected is for the trackpad so that I can check it out?
