    hello all,

I found this forum and just joined today. Yes I am a newbie here and please be cool. :)

I am new from Canada, and I am not expert like many of you guys.

I am looking to purchase Y510p with particular model 59405672 with dual SLI graphics card. Specs at the bottom. I've read some reviews that the battery does not last longer than 3 hours, but on Lenovo website the claim that it will last up to 5 hours. Which one is true based on your experience?
Also, what is the boot time with all standard? I've watched videos on youtube and it shows almost 1 minute boot time. Another reviews showed 10 seconds. Which one is true?
I am planning to swap the HDD 1 TB with Samsung Evo 840 SSD 1TB. Will it be worth it? Also, any suggestion where I can find step by step in detail on the steps to swap the HDD with the Samsung?

The battery life greatly depends on whether you've got the second graphic card in the ultrabay or not. Since you're going for the SLI model, you'll be hard pressed squeezing more than three hours out of the laptop. Since the laptop won't let you use the integrated GPU (which consumes far less power) unless the ultrabay has no GPU in it, some people remove the ultrabay GPU when they need extended battery, since this lets nvidia's optimus kick in, which would let the iGPU power your graphical needs rather than the GT755m on that model.

In terms of start times, I've got the SSHD 1 TB hd plus 8 gbb SSD and my boot times are right around 10 to 15 seconds. The laptop comes with a lot of bloatware, so removing it from your start up, along with your computer altogether really helps. Adding the 1 TB Samsung SSD EVO SSD would make a HUGE difference, but I can't bring myself to spend $550 on a hard drive, but that's just me.

You should look for 59405667. It has identical spec but with Intel 7260 instead of Intel Centrino 2230. 7260 appears to be more stable than 2230.

The 1TB 840 Evo is nearly half the price of the notebook. It will be snappier than 24GB cache. If you really must get the seconds down to minimum and can not find better use of money then sure, go for it.

    Just noticed this today: Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p 59388313 15.6" Notebook 59388313 B&H

This seems like a pretty solid deal, right? $950 for i7, 1920x1080, SLI, and the hybrid SSD. I've been watching this model for a while and I think this is the first time I've seen it under $1,000 with SLI and the other features.

This model comes with 1TB +8GB cache hybrid drive. You will not be able to utilize or upgrade M.2 NGFF drive option. As I mention above, make sure it comes with 7260 and not 2230 Wifi card.

Do you guys know how to swap the HDD to SSD step by step? I am an amateur here. :)

Can I swap the 1TB HDD with Samsung 840 evo 1TB?

I replaced the OEM 1TB drive with a 512GB Samsung Pro SSD, was my first time and I used the included Samsung Magician software. Quite easy, just install and follow the instructions. Some tips: Do the cloning as soon as possible, the less data you have, the faster the cloning will be. Also remove unwanted programs or bloatware before you clone the drive.
If you want to use Intel GPU by removing the ultra bay GPU, you have to install the Intel GPU driver, usually found on the driver partition of your 1TB hard drive. Without the driver, which is not installed by default on the SLI versions, Optimus will not work.

    Hi Bonfire,
I am new to this whole thing. Care to share how to remove the bloatwares? I also intend to do this the first day I get the laptop so there won't be extra data other than comes from the factory.

I don't intend to use Intel GPU. I plan to use both Nvidia 755m. I just want to swap the drivers.
What's the pros and cons using Intel GPU over Nvidia anyway? I am guessing less power but lesser quality picture?

To remove bloatware, The PC Decrapifier Wipes Unwanted Junk | The PC Decrapifier is extremely helpful. Be careful not to remove anything important though, but the Y510P has a ton of bloatware out of the box. I found this video super helpful:
New Laptop: What to Do When You Get a New Notebook/Laptop/PC - YouTube

The Intel GPU will give far less power to your graphical needs, but it will also use less of your battery power. For example, when casually surfing the internet you don't need dual SLI 755m video cards, so the iGPU would be better used there. On the other hand, when you're gaming, video editing, etc the 755m cards would be what you'd want to use. As of yet, no one has figured out how to switch between the two with the second GPU still in the ultrabay.

I see. Can I switch back and forth easily between IGPU and 755m anytime if I take out the second GPU out of the ultrabay? Or, will I need to re-install drivers everytime I want to switch?

I have been told that the easiest way is to have the OS on a disc (called Recovery disk? yes?) and then swap the HDD with SSD and pop in the disc? Is this correct? When I called Lenovo, they said they will charge $$ for me to have the disc. However, they said that I can make the recovery disk myself since when I turn on the computer the first time it will ask me if I want to image a recovery disk. Is this also correct?

Compare to migrating the OS from the HDD to SSD.

Sorry if my question sounds dumb, but I am a newbie and try to learn this my self.

switching between iGPU and single 755M is automatically handled by nvidia optimus technology which is disabled with seconnd gpu in ultrabay..if you remove the second gpu from ultrabay optimus will decide which task needs descrete GPU and which not..or you can configure it in drivers by yourself and choose different options for different applications..also you dont have to reboot when changing options..or reinstall drivers each time you remove ultrabay GPU..reboot is necesarry since you can't swap ultrabays with your system powered on

EDIT: you dont have to reinstall anything when putting in or out second GPU..and someone already wrote in the previous page that you can't use iGPU with the second 755M (or any other ultrabay GPU) in ultrabay..which I also wrote it in the first sentence of this post. ;)

If I don't remove the second 755m from the ultrabay, how can I manually switch between iGPU and the 755ms?

If I remove the 2nd 755m and want to put it back in later one, do I need to reinstall the 755m again?

That's the problem everyone is facing, with the second GPU in the ultrabay, you can't switch between the iGPU and the 755ms. The iGPU can't be used unless you actually physically remove the ultrabay GPU.

If you remove the second 755m and put it back in later on, you won't have to reinstall anything at all, that's the beauty of the ultrabay, just pop it in and you're good to go. I've removed my second 750m tons of times with no issues.

Are you cloning the OS or doing a fresh install? If you're just cloning you don't necessarily have to have a boot disk.

I don't know what I need. Tell me what I need to do to swap the HDD and SSD. Which one is easier to do? Fresh install or cloning? I assumed "fresh install" means using a boot or recovery disk? And "cloning" means data migration? I need a SATA to USB cable if I go with "cloning" way, don't I?
If I go with "fresh install", I don't need the cable, right? Also, the bloat ware won't be included? Am I right on this?

I've been doing a lot of reading between here and on the Lenovo forums regarding the Y510p. I was very interested until I started reading about the pile of problems on the Lenovo forums. I do some gaming (StarCraft 2, BF4, Splinter Cell Blacklist, etc), but wanted a machine I could use at work if need be so it wasn't awash with LED's. My plan was to buy the SLI version as well as the separate optical drive which seems available on the US site and then I could switch those depending on what I was doing. I've been going back and forth between this and the MSI GE60, but I've heard it struggles to provide much more than 2-2.5 hours on battery even with light usage. The laptop I have now is around 6 lbs, so I didn't want to get too much heavier than that. My question to all the Y510p owners here is...should I run away fast from the Lenovo or are the problems I've read about exaggerated?

Correct, with a fresh install you can just put in the ssd and install the OS fresh and not have any of the bloatware. With the cloning, you will make an exact copy of your current HDD on to the SSD. If your laptop is brand new and you don't have much to migrate over, it is usually recommended to just do a fresh install of the OS.

The OS Windows 8 comes preinstalled on the laptop, and it does not come with an OS disc. The Lenovo software support said that I need to pay $$ if I want a recovery disk. The alternative is to make my own recovery disk and the computer will prompt this when I first start the computer. Will this recovery disk be sufficient for what I need and not missing anything?

Then you won't have much problems. I'm running single here and have been pretty trouble free, and have gotten some nice numbers for battery life. This being said, if you are willing to compromise heavily on the quality of the display, the Y410p is a better choice, due to increased portability and lower cost, not to mention the 900p display is a bit easier on the battery.

My 2 cents, but hey, look in this thread, almost all the complaints revolve around SLI.

    This link should be helpful:
How to install Windows 8 with no Windows CD or DVD drive [Solved] - DVD Drives - Windows 8

The laptop has a recovery partition on it, which will restore it to the way it was out of the box (the little back arrow beside your power jack is linked to his). This probably means that all the bloatware will be installed as well though, although I'm not 100% sure if Lenovo does this or not. Although, take everything I say with a grain of salt since I've never actually done any of this myself, I could very well be wrong. Also, make sure you back up the LENOVO D:/ (24.9 gb partition) drive somewhere safe too since this has all your drivers in it and could come in super handy.

Thank you Cyro. I see a Lenovo technician on Lenovo forum suggested Paragon for the cloning process. However, I also watched how to video on youtube where the cloning was performed by using the Samsung data migration. I am confused which one to use since I cannot find the pros and cons of the two. :(

Also, on the link that you provided shows to create a recovery on a USB media. In this case, can I use the SSD as the USB media and then just installed it on the laptop to boot? Did I understand it correctly?

What is happening fellow Y510P pwners?

I am a fellow pwner of a y510p gt755m SLI and I must say that this thing is a beast.

This is definitely not for the modest user, and I'm pretty sure Windows 8 is the worst version of Windows since ME. One of the first things I did was install Start8.

I can tell you this about games with the SLI card... Make sure you parametrize GPU memory in your games. Most will rely on pure speed to load textures, but if you increase your texture cache it's a total WIN. I noticed Crysis 3 ran like garbage before I told it to dedicate a Gig of graphics memory. Just food for thought. I'm getting dat boi 40fps on 1080p max settings now that I've done that.

Question I had for all of you tech savvy users who have dealt with this warlock for more than a few months... Where can I obtain a blu ray ultrabay?
Like, I know I can't, but I'm going to ask anyways. Lenovo "doesn't make them anymore" or some garbage like that. I can find blu ray drives everywhere for thinkpads and some for ideapads, but the mounting bracket is never present.

So what do I do? Just deal with the fact that part of this laptop is vaporware?

And i would consider doing a clean install of Windows 7 if i were you, that's what i did anyways, it's running great. 8 second startup on my 24GB SSD :)

Not too sure about using the SSD as a media device directly, I'm pretty sure you've got to actually use a USB and then install everything, although I'm not 100% sure. Also, if you are clean installing, you won't need the migration software, but either way, I've read good things about the Samsung software. Thinking of getting and 840 EVO myself and will probably clone using that.

Also, I notice you're in Canada, might interest you to know that the 500gb Samsung 840 EVO is gonna be on sale on newegg.ca starting today at 6:00 pm E.S.T. No price yet, but its a "shell shocker" and those tend to be pretty good and only last a while. It'll show up on this link:

    Hello everybody,

I just bought this laptop today, after I spent some good hours last night reading on this forum. Some issues I have with it, though...

    - the nvidia graphic board does not start when I want to play a game, I can check this with techpower-up cpu-z and only the intel board is reacting in games(also very low fps). I have set in the nvidia control panel everything to automatic selection of the board, OR only the nvidia gt755m board, but didn't help. the intel hd graphic driver is the 10.18.10.3345 version, released on the 10/31/2013. The nvidia one is the latest on the website.

    - also, after installing windows 7, on the 1920x1080, everything is sooo little, hope I won't damage my eyes. How do you cope with this?

    - I see that the hdd has a 1gb partition. can I delete that?
    Thanks in advance

Either you pay money for it, or you do it on your own.

No ideea? I need to know if it's something broken to it so I can return it and get another one. In device manager I see both video cards, the 4600 and 755 ones.

You can tell its working by playing a few minutes of Tomb Raider on ultra settings, if you right hand starts to cook from the heat, the your SLI is working. :D
Seriously though, you can check your SLI status on the Nvidia Control panel.

Did the issues with the graphic cards start after you installed Win 7?

I didn't have any other pre installed Windows, and windows 7 is the only one I installed.

Are you saying your laptop came without an operating system and you installed Win 7?
For the graphics issue, uninstall all graphics drivers [intel and nvidia] and install the recommended win 7 drivers from the Lenovo site.
If they work, then you can upgrade to the latest versions from the intel and nvidia site.

Where did you buy the laptop from? Lenovo? How come you didn't have windows 8 preinstalled in it? They only sell that model with windows 8 preinstalled, and not 7

It's hard to see if your question came with sarcasm or not and I knew that you can install windows 7 yourself, but they guy stated that it didn't come with any other preinstalled windows. I thought it always comes with at least a preinstalled windows 8. Can we request Lenovo not to install any windows at all?

No they can't. They, like all laptop manufactures such as Dell and HP and etc., have to sell their laptops as working units. If the unit has no OS, it's not a fully working unit. I know its a pain to deal with, but its how it is. Unless you go to, I think Xotic PC has the Y510p, and have it custom built. Although custom isn't really anything outside of display, ram, storage, and wireless card, and any other peripherals, you can order it with or without an OS, but that also comes at a price.

The "operating system" is free-dos. That's how they sell a lot of laptops here in my country, not only Lenovo does that.

Just checked now, and none of the y510p model is sold with OS. Also, the 24Gb SSD is not available in my country ( Romania).
