$20 for +8GB RAM (16GB total) sounds totally good even if you think you wont ever need that much RAM, IMO.

Since the seller on that price was Amazon (stock out from them at the moment) I think they might re-stock soon for the same price, maybe for Cyber Monday.

    3 questions.

So far as I have read the I7 4700 turbo boost was gimped, so that now it is only 1 core that can exceed 2.4Ghz at any given time. Provided this is true, how will it perform with something like PCSX2/Dolphin?

Has anyone actually successfully tried mixed 755/750 SLI yet? I am worried I might never get to see the 755 ultrabay reach the market, and I just bought the 755 version that dropped $500 on Lenovo's site.

Lastly, does it support Linux very well(or the other way around)? My last laptop had driver problems, because of laptop unique hardware configuration.

I play dolphin on mine all the time (on windows). Runs nice and smooth, just be sure to have the Nvidia GPU enabled when playing Dolphin.

Linux support is OK i would say, the two biggest issues being the screen brightness error (which is easily fixed with a few startup scripts) and the second one being a loud speaker pop on shutdown, which i haven't tackled yet :(

As you can see Lenovo website have GT 755M SLI model, wich means there is already a 755M Ultra Bay GPU (its just an overclocked 750M anyways).

so i thought i should cycle my battery so i unplugged the ac adapter.

I launched bf4 with the thought of playing a round but my fps was down to 15 fps!

I checked power settings and it was still set to high performance.

So anybody know what thats all about? I run off battery and bf4 runs awful.

Because gaming notebooks aren't designed to run at full speed when on battery. SLI also gets disabled. Plug in if you want to game and to have SLI.

    guess i was wrong lol

oh i didn't know sli gets disabled on battery power

Well i understand that. There was a 750m ultrabay for a long time too, before it came into market by itself. With the 755m version being less common, I am worried they might not ever care to release the stand alone version.

I'm waiting and waiting for them to release it. Getting quite bored while I'm at it, too - when was GT755M added to Malaysia website anyway ?

Also, for those who ordered GT750M ultrabays - were any of you from other parts of the world, and not US ? I'm personally from Europe and I'm wondering whether when GT755M ultrabay finally becomes available, if I'll be able to even order it and get it shipped here..

SLI gets disabled on battery power but as long as the ultrabay is plugged in, the Nvidia 750/755 is still driving the display, which hamperes battery life versus having the IGP handle the display when the ultrabay is pulled out.

Yes, im currently on windows 8. However, i am deciding whether i should upgrade to 8.1 or not. Hopefully, can anybody here who already upgraded to 8.1 helpme decide in this one. Does the SLI issue really solved by the vbios update. Are there any other issue other than the sli? Which is faster/more stable windows 8 or 8.1? Appreciate all your inputs here. TIA!

Yes, the vbios fixes the SLI in 8.1
I like the features in 8.1, like booting straight to desktop. Can't really say if it's faster or more stable. My laptop is set on "fast startup" by default (2 second boot), but I think 8.0 had that as well. If I were you, I'd read up on the difference between 8.0 and 8.1, and decide for yourself if you want to upgrade. Suffice it to say, I haven't seen any ill effects.

Thanks for your feedback. I really want to upgrade to 8.1 since i already used it in my desktop. Im just concern on its performance in y510p. Im will wait for more feedback and if it is all positive, i will be upgrading to 8.1.

    Hey there, welcome to NBR.

I run Windows 8.1 on mine, smooth as butter, no lag whatsoever from Windows 8, and everything worked out of the box since i don't have SLI.

If you are looking for the vBIOS files for SLI under 8.1, here they are:

So guys...what are some tips to increase longevity of a laptop. Specifically, this one of course, but I assume this applies to most laptops. I've already taken someone elses advice and put the battery capped at 60% under the battery optimization option. What else can I do? I'm guessing turn it off every night? Just leaving it on sleep is probably not good for it?

The only difference between shutdown and sleep is the fact that sleep keeps the RAM powered. Everything else turns off. The only bad thing about sleep is that if your battery dies or something happens, you might lose your data.

So the 8gb i7 sli is on sale on amazon for 950 again.

i already ordered it at 980, but they price matched it for me, so hopefully it doesn't drop anymore so i don't have to try my luck a second time.

It's using the 2230 wifi card. Has the issue with that gone away completely with the new driver? It also has the 8GB cache as oppose to the 24GB. For me both this one and the 899(+tax) version on Lenovo' site, cost the same. This one would arrive 8 days sooner, but the wifi card, and cache, put me on the fence. I don't want to deal with any connection problems at all. That being said I do prefer the 750 sli as oppose to optic drive/755.

    What would you guise recommend?

SLI should be the only deciding factor if you are planning to game. I am too waiting for a deal to buy this laptop. However I discovered that reseller(newegg, amazon, ebay etc) y510p's do not have a slot to add/upgrade SSD. Only the ones on lenovo official site able to do this but they are costly.

No, it is not the only thing to consider when gaming. If you are playing online you don't want wifi to drop every 10 minutes. There is also this.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M SLI - NotebookCheck.net Tech
NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M SLI - NotebookCheck.net Tech

No, this will not just be just a gaming laptop for me. It will be a multimedia laptop, which means movies and anime, which means torrenting. Especially overnight torrenting, For me having an unreliable wifi card is simply not an option. With that said, I value size more than speed when it comes to harddrive, so the stock SHDD is fine.

Tips for Lenovo on making the Y510's successor more successful:

    1. Include AC Wireless by default.
    2. Optional 3K display on 15 inch models, same as W540.
    3. Multi Color Backlit Keyboard
    4. Make the laptop more custom when ordered, like when you order a T440p
    5. Improve pasting jobs on the laptop. Improve cooling as long as the laptop remains quiet.
    6. Dual 860M's in SLI would be really welcome
    7. Keep the aggressive pricing
    8. 4702MQ as default CPU for less throttling

    1. higher price
    2. higher price & lower fps on native res
    3. higher price
    4. higher price
    5. ok, that is welcome, with improved ultrabay heatsink, and proper mounting mechanism
    6. fire hazard :) ( at least with current cooling design), higher price, bigger psu hence more price
    7. see all the above
    8. Throttling can be eliminated (except AVX linpack, current limit :( ) with some cooling mods, so with wish no. 5 it is not needed, but a 4800mq is, with proper xtu support ( oc, current, tdp override) but this one will make price higher also

Keep dreaming, but this is not alienware, just a cheap lenovo hitting the sweet spot of price/performance. :)

Ok, stopped trolling, here is some useful information for those, with lower volume from left speaker:

Workaround is simple: raise the volume when you reach to that point, where left speaker becomes equally loud. Then lower the volume, and L/R will be in balance. Works for me every time it happens( lenovo driver/R271 as well).

Couldn't pinpoint the source of this, but since it is not related to driver, it could be EC bug... ( running bios 1.07)

Considering Maxwell is rumored to lower TDP (and temps), dual 860 might be possible, and under the same PSU. Broadwell also rumored to improve load temps and power consumption instead of focusing on idling ones like Haswell.

As for AC wireless, Intel is already including the 7260 on current models, though for some reason in Windows it is locked to N mode, but if you boot linux it works in AC mode. Just a small firmware fix could solve this.

As for the 3k, i said optional. As a 200$ upgrade i would see it viable, especially considering MSI GT60 3k edition currently costs 2000$.

You want a new haswell modell, or a broadwell one? :) Forget about, with every die shrink, even with lower tdp, surface of the chip is becoming smaller, so is the surface for transferring heat from the chip. edit: forgot about leakage, with shrinked die, leak current is higher, so is the unusefull heat production.

Stil doesnt using the limits of N, but yeah, ac is welcome.

Ok, but making more modells on the market will make the price higher, for the standard modell too.
And that screen is imho closer to 500, at least the price you are paying for it.

If they want to cover that area of the market, be sure it will come in a different modell, priced higher( closer to competition) :)

For what is advertise as a multimedia laptop, 3k does not make sense. HD Movies/Television are 1080, which does not scale directly with 3k. The multicolor keyboard, would be more expensive. But the cooling does need to improve. The fact that they throttle the 4700 is almost bordering on false advertisement when they call the chip 4700mq, because for a lot these chips what differentiate one from the other is the clock rate.

If I had any advice for them is focus on cooling, more than anything. A lot of other qualities will flow from that.

That rumor seems unlikely, considering we have yet to see gaming notebooks with 2.5K resolution, which is the next logical progression after 1080p. The MSI GT60 3K Edition was a one-off.

hey been searching i wanna upgrade y510p sli 16gb model to 8.1.

    1) should i do a clean install or upgrade?

    2) Is there a guide that will show me a step by step guide on how to do it, including what i should know about the vbios thing to make sli work on 8.1? for example i have everything stock do i put the os in the 1 tb or the ssd? i font know what the factory default is. also i want to make sure everything runs as fast as it does now it factory settings is there anything i should do after the update to ensure of that. can a os even go on the 24 GB ssd. if not what do i use it for i cant even tell if my other smaller hard drive is the ssd. if anyone knows a step by step guide it would really help. i truly am a newb at this.

    3) last but not least when i upgrade or clean install do i have re download the drivers? if so it the same as the 8 drivers someone linked earliar?

I just got my y510p dual SLI laptop and did a clean install of Windows 8.1. You will need to download new 8.1 specific drivers from the lenovo website. You also will most likely need to do the vbios update on your GT750 GPU to get SLI working as it has changed in Windows 8.1. Be careful on the vbios update make sure you get the right file. There is one for a 755 and a 750, I don't know which one you have obviously.

5 days is a long shipping time for something coming from within Canada, but way too short to come from Asia. That's why i'm wondering if anyone knows where it's coming from.

Also, I purchased the model that comes with the Network Card: Intel® Wireless-N 7260 (802.11bgn). Did I read correctly and people say this card is an AC card but Lenovo has shut off AC functionality?

    Lenovo didn't. Intel did:

    Intel® Wireless-N 7260 Plus Bluetooth*

It's still a better card than the 2230 though, and under Linux it works as AC (which leads to believe that Intel's drivers for Windows absolutely suck).

This link shows the N version of the card and underneath (in related materials section) there is a link to the AC version. Is it the same card though? Why would Intel shut things off that make the card better? Or is it just b/c they haven't created a Windows driver yet and maybe one is coming?

So i should be receiving my y510p within the next few days, got a costco version: Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P Laptop | Intel Core i7 | 2GB Graphics | 1080p | Backlit Keyboard

Im fairly new to gaming laptops, so i have a few questions
    1. I read there is a lot of heat problems with this laptop, to the point were the keyboard and sides are too hot to use. My current laptop is really old, and has the same problem, to the point where it shuts down by itself on occasion. I dont want to deal with this anymore so can someone shed some light on how well its cooling system works/if elevating is enough or i need to get a coolermaster
    2. Did lenovo stop making 4700MQ processors/switched them all to 4702? because the descriptions says this one is a 4700.
    3. How does the 8 gig ssd work? what should i do with it/what do i need to do with it.
    4. what are some common problems people have had with their y510p's so i know what to look out for
    5. What drivers do i need to update if any?
    6. Any tips on what to do after i receive my laptop?
So far i know that i should uninstall all the useless junk that comes with it/go into the trackpad settings, and turn off all of the "tricks" that they put in (multi-touch, gestures, edge-scrolling, etc) it becomes more responsive
    7. Since im new to gaming computers, what are things i can do to increase fps other than just lowering graphics

    1) The keyboard is fine. It doesn't get too hot. The side vents will get hot, but that's understandable. I don't think you'll have issues with it shutting down, unless you get a bad CPU/GPU.
    2) I really don't know who gets 4702 and who gets 4700. I got a 4700, and that is what was in the description when I bought it
    3) You don't have to do anything. The 8GB is built in the HDD and will automatically cache the most frequently used data
    4) Bad pasting job on the GPU in the ultrabay and the Wifi are the two main issues people have
    5) If you upgrade to Windows 8.1, you'll need to flash the vbios (really easy). I don't know about Wifi drivers, because mine is mainly connected via ethernet
    6) If you read a page or two back, I gave my recommendations on setup. You may want a different setup, but it's not a bad place to start

Oh...what's wrong with the drivers? I upgraded to 8.1 and didn't update many drivers if any. Did I miss something?
