Does anyone know how much an ultrabay GT 755M realistically costs? Contemplating buying a SLI version and parting out the second card since I don't need it. Can't seem to find reasonably priced single GPU version in Germany and Lenovo's site is out of stock. -.-
-
It will be most likely around 230$ USD for the Ultrabay, thats the price of the 750M.
-
Which model number did you get? And did you buy it directly from lenovo or from a reseller?
-
You would think but I wouldn't put it past Lenovo to have custom 7260s or require you to be on the latest official Bios to use it.
Cheers, -
That's great news, any word on the pricing ?! Also, mind providing me a link where I can order it, and do they ship worldwide ? :O I'm in Croatia, which sadly sometimes gets avoided by companies that deal with IT deliveries.
Thanks, you've made my day
-
Does lenovo give you a windows 8 serial key on the bottom of the laptop and do they give you a windows disk? I plan on upgrading my m.2 to 128gb and that'll require a reformat.
-
+1. I'd like to know this as well as I'd like reinstall windows as well to get rid of all the bloatware.
-
No CD key on the bottom, it is built into your bios I believe. And no CD either, there is a built in restore function in a hidden partition.
-
Windows 8 product key is built into the BIOS. I just cloned the original drive to my SSD and tossed the original in a drawer. I have no idea how a fresh install works on these systems. I know you can order restore disks from Lenovo as well.
Cheers, -
Does anyone know if/how you can roll back your bios to an older version?
-
You can't.
-
Do you know if there's a bios mod for 3.05 then?
I really want to replace my wireless card. -
anyone been able to successfully cram Windows onto the 24 gig SSD? I just bought a y510p and I'm sort of curious, not a deal breaker in any way.
-
The smallest Windows 7 Install i have ever done is 19 gigs, with the swap file disabled, system restore disabled, hibernate disabled. That leaves you maybe 3 gigs of formatted space for files and applications, on which you would want to install a browser and an office suite at minimum.
-
Okay so basically doing the standard SSD windows prep will get the size down enough, good to know
-
The smallest amount you need to *comfortably* run Windows is 32GB, and that's assuming all your files will be on another drive or in the cloud.
-
The problem is that Windows setup won't let you install on a partition that small in the first place, and your Windows installation will still balloon by a few GB's after you've installed 8.1 and Windows Updates.
Basically, you're asking something that can't be done. -
Pricing of GT755M Ultrabay ? :O And any link where I can (pre)order it ?
-
Doesn't look to be out yet. Could email them to ask when it'll be out. I think the GT750m ultrabay just came out couple weeks ago, so maybe in a couple more weeks?
Or I could've missed it... -
I have a win 8 pro iso from an installation on another machine. Is it possible to extract the key from the y510p, and then install windows on an SSD using this disc? Then just upgrade to 8.1 via the windows store?
Anyone purchase a y510p recently, can you check your status. Mine just jumped from 2013 to shipping on Dec 31st of 2014 and delivery in 2015. I assume and really hope that's an error. -
I know you don't want to dig through this huge thread but someone here said the BIOS key will automatically apply if the OS disk is the same version as the version the system came with. Never tried it so I have no idea if that works.
With all the hassle that comes with doing this why would you just clone the current disk? As long as you clone the recovery partition I assume you could run that and get a clean load. Just uninstall all the bloat. Took 15 minutes to clean off all the programs I didn't want.
Cheers, -
Hi to everyone,
i have my y510p on order and am interested in swapping the 24gig SSD against something more reasonable, have found something from Intel: ARK | Intel® SSD Pro 1500 Series (120GB, M.2 42mm SATA 6Gb/s, 20nm, MLC) Haven't found any retailers in Europe tho

I'm getting my laptop soon, and I was planning on taking out the battery and leaving it plugged in most of the time except for when I take it to go out somewhere. However, I've recently read about a feature it had where you can leave the charger in and it will stop around 60%. After 60% would this be equivalent to the latter because I don't want to leave it plugged in all the time with the battery still in there affecting the life of it.
-
Keep your battery in the laptop at all times. The battery will protect you from power outages and accidental yanking. Use the 60% change feature in Lenovo power management (called Optimized battery health). Also, even though the cooling in this laptop is not the best, it does do a good job of driving the heat away from the battery.
-
Does the Optimized battery health save the battery as much as leaving it out?
-
Yes. A user reported a total capacity loss of only 8% over 2 years by keeping it at 60% at all times. Also, Optimized battery health is a feature built into the battery/bios, so even if the laptop is off it will not charge past 60% unless you return the setting to "maximum battery life".
-
Oh wow, that's really good. Also, is there anything I should uninstall right off the bat? And what should I install?
-
I know everyone is different, but this is how I get a system ready after purchase:
- Remove bloatware: Office trials, Antivirus, proprietary media software, extra toolbars, windows skins, etc
- Leave the important stuff like drivers, and system software (Energy Management, Audio settings, etc)
- Install Microsoft Security Essentials (not needed for Windows 8, as it's built in; it just needs to be enabled after removing the other antivirus software)
- Run Windows Update several times to get all the updates
- Change system settings to run smoother, such as visual settings, defrag, etc
- Install system software as needed (updated video drivers, MSI Afterburner, etc)
- Install secondary software. My list includes the following, which are all free. These are my base applications used on all systems:
Windows Live Mail
Firefox
Irfanview (for image viewing)
Media Player Classic/Home Cinema (for videos)
MediaMonkey (for audio organization)
Steam (games)
OpenOffice -
I downloaded the Power Management and chose the optimize battery health. Just incase I need to change it to something later on, how do I go back to that menu? Once I exited it, there was no desktop icon, and I couldn't find on on my computer.
-
So, as I wait on my y510p to ship, I've decided due to the heavy gaming I'll be doing I should get a cooling pad, although I have the fear that a cooling pad will not make much of a difference. Does anyone in here have experience with a cooling pad, and can I excpect a huge difference from one? If you have had success with a cooling pad, please let me know which one.
On a side note, I ordered my laptop with a 2 year warranty. I have heard repasting offered as a way to reduce temperatures. I have plenty of experience with thermal paste (built my own desktop) but have also heard that this will void my warranty. Is this true? Could I at least repaste the ultrabay 755m without voiding my warranty? If I can't repaste at all, any other options to improving the cooling?
Thanks for answering my constant barrage of questions! -
I'm also curious about cooling pad options. I wonder how much of a difference it would make, and if there's a good option that is also quiet. My ultrabay GPU doesn't get above 85C now, but it's still a good 10C higher that my main GPU.
Yes, you can repaste the ultrabay GPU without voiding the warranty. There's a link floating around somewhere with some teardown photos. I have no experience in pasting, and I was able to repaste my ultrabay GPU pretty easily.
Because the laptop brings air in from the bottom, having it raised a bit also helps. I currently have it sitting on 4 furniture pads, which raises it about 1/4" just to help the airflow. -
Can anyone confirm wether or not the y510p will work with the korean type monitors such as the catleap and yamasaki? I want to buy an extra monitor and I am looking at these monitors and connecting it by HDMI. But it's really hard finding someone who has done this sucessfully.
will this combination work:

Guys with cooling pad questions, there's another thread in "accessories" that has ridiculously detailed info/recommendations.
However, no point being "that guy" so...
I was recommended a cooler master u3 (good to get a 15-17inch one for a 15 inch laptop) and it works well. I haven't been able to measure any difference though, but I'm not sure if I'm able to. For example XTU and HWmonitor report 40 degrees on a table for 5 minutes at idle, I leave it by a -10 degree window open fully for 5 minutes, still 40 degrees.
But I really like it and it probably is making it cooler lol. -
Under "hidden icons" in the bottom right of your screen. Unless you deleted it permanently from there. For me it's under an icon that looks like a car labelled "energy management"
Downloaded it? I thought it comes with all Lenovos, especially ours. But if you ever need to find something, just hit windows key, then start typing. That's the search function now. -
Hello every, just got my y510p today. i've been reading this forum since last week and i have learned a lot from this forum. I just have a question, does anybody already tried the latest r331 driver from nvidia? How does the sli work with the new driver? Thank you.

Yep, it works fine as long as you don't have SLI.
-
Who are you replying to? The guy with the monitor question, the cooling pad, or the nvidia driver?

Are the hybrid hard drives that are 1 TB plus 8 GB ssd that come in the laptop when bought from resellers (newegg, amazon) a 2.5" SATA hard drive? In other words, will it work in my Playstation 3 when I decide to swap it out of the laptop for an actual SSD? Or do those hybrid hard drives not work in Playstation 3s?

Guy with the nvidia driver question. Not sure about SLI, since i don't have one. -
I'm gonna be ordering my y510p. Should I do it later today (Black Friday) or wait until Cyber Monday?
-
i personally am waiting until monday, unless someone talks me out of it. i figure there's a chance amazon will bring the i7+sli back down to 950, or that lenovo might have a better sale on it (though slim). i really wanted to buy from lenovo to get the 24gb ssd so i could replace it but looks like after they redid all the options they aren't offering anything competitive with amazon and the ssd isn't worth hundreds to me.
of course if the current 980 price goes away i'm gonna be mad, but i figure i'll take a shot waiting until monday. -
Buy it now from Lenovo. If you find the deal on Monday, buy it again and cancel the first order. That's what I did yesterday. Had one from last week, better option presented itself yesterday so I bought a second. Also want to buy a third from futureshop and then pick the best for me of the lot and return the other 2. No hassle returns from either merchant.

Seems like the r331 driver does not work with sli. As i tried gaming, only the one integrated to the y510p is working as per checking on gpu-z stats. My problem now is when i tried playing NFS Rivals on the old driver, it keeps on asking to upgrade to latest driver or at least 220 or higher driver. Does anybody here knows a driver that is more later than 220 where the sli card of our laptop work? TIA!

Not every game is optimised for SLI. I am on R331 and my SLI works. Also are you sure your SLI is enabled?
-
You on windoes 8.1? If sli does not work on 8.1 but worked on 8 then let me know.

Wowowowow!
Amazon.com: Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p 59385820 15.6-Inch Laptop (Dusk Black): Computers & Accessories
$998 for SLI, 16GB RAM, 1080p. 8GB SDHD cache, DAMMIT! I bough that exact model for $1,099 just 2 weeks ago >=/
If anyone plans to buy a y510p on this days that is a sick deal and no 7% taxes as on Lenovo site. This one is sold by Amazon directly, not a 3rd party seller. I suppose this is for Black Friday so I dont think that price will last long (maybe just today, maybe until Cyber Monday?). The only missing part to make it perfect would be the 24GB cache disk (and M.2 slot probabbly). -
I'm using 327.02 on Windows 8.1
My SLI works fine (for the games that support SLI) -
I heard there are major improvements if you upgrade to 330.x
-
fyi this is now gone.
i saw this earlier - but honestly i couldn't even decide if the extra ram was worth 20 bucks to me. if you want it for some reason then that was a great price. now the decision is made up for me. the other regular model is still 980 - i just keep hesitating on pulling the trigger because i'm thinking amazon might drop it more by monday, and getting stuck for return shipping i'm sure won't be worth it. hmm. -
This laptop is constantly on and off sale, just patience. Cyber monday might bring in some nice savings.
Today i participated in Black Friday by buying nothing and eating leftovers from the fridge. Take that economy!
